“Expecto Patronum!”
Harry thought of good times with his best mates and he was rewarded with a bang and a silvery stag erupted from his wand. The world brightened immediately from that otherworldly silvery brilliance.
He shivered as the stag trotted to him, tension eased off him, slipping through his half sleeping mind as a dream met daylight.
It seemed that the darkness clung to him more than it should. Harry took great care not to disturb argus as he tucked the sheets of that handsome naked man.
Harry knew darkness very well. He’d been fighting it his entire life in fact. Harry was making great strides in concentration as he dressed himself.
He wasn’t going to talk about Argus or his feelings or anything else. They were there and he didn’t have Hermione’s brains to properly to express them.
They were real.
Severus Snape had been right, For better or for worse in this dying world. They were fighting that which was unfixed, mutating and indestructible.
He basked in the silvery glow and he always felt it strange how such a pale light could be so warm.
Dumbledore had been right as well. Remember to turn on the light.
Harry didn’t know if he could be better than the great giants upon whose shoulders he stood. No one would ever likely best Dumbledore.
Harry was not the smartest, nor the most powerful but he knew his heart was in the right place. He could never equal Tom Riddle and his perverse splintering of souls.
Yet… Still he stood. He rubbed the itchy dark mark through his jacket sleeve. He remembered back all the way back to his first year.
When it was revealed that Tom Riddle had been nothing but a parasite living off his followers and that accursed half-life of unicorn blood.
Why had he decided to fight against this wretched dark thing at all. The answer was dully and dreadfully boring.
Because, he was something that had to be fought against. He was a monster and his mother’s sacrifice had destroyed his professor’s body just by touching it. His mother gave her life to protect him.
She had loved him so much, beyond words to describe. Tom could touch him now, Harry’s blood had brought about his return by a dark potion. It was part of Tom Riddle.
He didn’t believe in prophecy himself. As the walls and walls of prophecy orbs in the ministry had attested. Perhaps one of the seers really did see this coming. The world ending, all of it but no one would ever know because not a single one of them could speak plainly.
But, he had to admit to himself. Tom Riddle did believe prophecy, that crazy git believed in the words of Trelawney so much he had murdered his parents.
Harry smiled. As Professor Lupin had taught him the patronus charm. Harry’s green eyes twinkled with light.
Yes, he had gotten so far on the shoulders of titans but that didn’t mean he was not prepared to leave giant footprints of his own.
That was perhaps the grandest secret of the charm itself. It could only conjure what was already present.
The darkness would never be able to best them. It could not if they stood together. Even if they were the last wizards on this world.
Harry didn’t have to be a start from scratch, the most he would ever have to do.
Was merely, show his allies the wizards and witches how to harness their own light. The realization made his heart lighter than it had been. It was something he could easily attain. If he could get Dumbledore’s Army to do it.
This time around would be much easier.
The silvery stag snorted and booped him with its snout. “We’re going to be fine aren’t we?” He asked a question that Hermione would tell him was a rhetorical question.
Deep down, he knew the answer was yes. “Arry?” Harry beamed. “Get dressed, its time to do the rounds.”
Argus whined and groaned. “If you do, we’ll do it.” Harry wheedled goodnaturedly. Argus immediately sat up and started dressing.
Harry rolled his eyes smiling as he immediately opened the door.
“Hermione!” He cried out as the sliver stag galloped towards her. She sighed in relief and then she cast the charm herself.
There! Harry could see it. Like unwanted cobwebs, the strands of darkness almost intangible on the periphery undid themselves and vanished at the silvered light’s wholesome glow.
“Thank you Harry!” She beamed and then she hugged him. Her arms enveloped him and he returned it. Before she backed away.
“We really need to do laundry.” She frowned as she took her shirt and smelled it with great distaste.
Harry chuckled. “Okay.” He agreed, but It might taken sometime, We don’t exactly have a washing machine.”
She smiled and punched his arm affectionately.
“I’ll have you know I prepared for this exact circumstance and just for that you’re going to help me.” Harry grinned.
“I wouldn’t miss it.” And somehow they both were laughing. As their patronuses swam and glided around them. The world was brighter and for now the sky was clear and the sun began its daily trek.
