Another Sirius Problem
They walked back to the Great Hall together before going their separate ways.
=I'll meet you in your rooms in about half an hour, Sev, = Bella said after a quick look around to check that she couldn't be overheard. =Remy, do you think you can make it without being seen?=
"I spent seven years sneaking around this place as a student. I think I can outwit a few children, but I will be eternally grateful when Filch gets the Floo system up and running again," he answered.
"Tell me about it," Severus added. "Sometimes I think that man's entire mission in life is to make everyone else's as difficult as possible. He's always sneaking around the dungeons at night and getting in my way." He glanced around the room again, a movement in the shadows catching his eye. "Damn, I think your day just got worse, Bella. We've got company." He indicated a black shape curled up in the shadows near the fireplace. Remus groaned slightly and Severus put a hand on his arm in sympathy.
=Oh Merlin, not tonight. I can't handle another scene right now,= Bella sighed.
"Go on, get out of here," Remus said. "We can deal with this."
She nodded gratefully, quietly slipping back the way they had come.
"Is he going to be able to tell that we're together?" Severus asked, keeping one eye on the large black dog. He was privately hoping that Padfoot was asleep and that they too could slip away without being noticed.
"He is if you keep doing that," Remus grinned, indicating Severus' hand, which was still on his sleeve. Severus glared at Remus before removing it. He started to move towards Sirius but Remus stopped him.
"We can't have this conversation here, if only because he can't risk being seen. See if you can get to my room without being spotted and we'll join you there in a few minutes."
Severus nodded sharply and left, his robes billowing around him as he went. Remus chuckled slightly at his lover's insistence on making a dramatic exit even when there was almost no one to see it. He walked over to where Padfoot was sleeping and bent down to gently wake him. When he was sure he had the dog's attention he gestured towards the door, "Come on, we'll go to my rooms."
As they walked through the castle's corridors towards his room, Remus pulled his robes around him more tightly. Looking down at them he smiled to himself, actually they were Severus' robes, borrowed this morning and magically shrunk to fit him so that he wouldn't have to sneak out of Sev's room still wearing last night's dress robes. Personally he doubted that anyone would have noticed but Severus had insisted and Remus hadn't thought it worth arguing over, besides there was something comfortingly intimate about wandering around the school in his lover's robes.
He glanced down at Sirius again; this was not going to be easy.
"Padfoot, you should know, I arranged to meet Professor Snape in my rooms, so try not to kill him on sight, would you?"
Sirius stopped and when Remus turned around to see what the matter was he cocked his head to one side and looked at Remus inquisitively.
"I'll explain when we get there, I just thought I should warn you. Come on now." With that Remus turned and walked off leaving Sirius to trot after him.
Remus muttered a couple of counter-spells, tapped the door with his wand and then spoke the password. When the door had closed behind them, Sirius transformed.
"Why on earth do you have so much security on your door?" he asked Remus, pointedly ignoring the Potions Master who was sitting in one of the comfortable chairs in front of the fire.
Remus smiled ruefully, "Two words. Draco Malfoy."
"Malfoy tried to break into your rooms?" Severus queried sharply, scowling at Sirius. "When did this happen?" *And why the hell didn't you tell me? *
"Once a week since I got here," Remus said. "When he stops trying to get in I'll start to worry, because then I'll know he's found whatever it is he's looking for."
Severus stared at Remus for a moment and then the slightest hint of a smile flashed across his face, "You are absolutely unbelievable, Lupin!"
Remus grinned, "Coming from you, I'll take that as a compliment."
Sirius looked from one to the other. "What is going on here, Remus? You're treating him like a friend."
Remus glanced across at Severus. He swore he could actually see the walls going up around the Potions Master.
"Sirius, you'd better sit down."
"What?"
"Sit down. I need to tell you something and you're not going to like it." *I've still got that gift for understatement, then! *
"Just tell me, Moony. And then you can tell me what that slimy git is doing here!"
Remus was trying desperately not to meet Severus' eyes at this point. He already knew that his lover was wearing the same expression he wore when dealing with the Neville Longbottom's of the world but he was afraid that if he actually saw it, he'd start laughing and that was not the way to make this conversation go better.
"Sirius, I -" He paused, trying to find a way to say it without upsetting his friend or his lover. *Oh hell, there really is no good way to do this. * "Sirius - Severus, Bella, and I are involved - with one another." He paused, waiting for Sirius to say something. Sirius looked at him blankly for a moment. Remus could tell the moment his words sunk in; Sirius' face lost all of its colour and his eyes flashed angrily.
"Oh no. You have got to be kidding me. For Merlin's sake, what are they putting in the water around here? First Bella and then you," Sirius ranted.
"Sirius," Remus warned, almost growling but not quite.
"How can either of you possibly trust him? It's not safe for you to be around him. Do you even remember what he was like at school?"
"I remember that I nearly killed him and that it was your fault," Remus spat angrily. "So, perhaps you should be giving this lecture to him, not me."
"Remus-" Severus began but Sirius interrupted him.
"Shut up, Death Eater," Sirius snapped. "Stay out of this. I don't know what kind of act you pulled to get them both to sleep with you, but now I'm back I'm not going to let you get away with it. Remus always did have a tendency to pick up strays and losers; especially those who want to take advantage of him. This insanity stops and it stops now. Stay away from them or you'll answer to me!"
Severus raised one eyebrow sardonically before replying. "I'd love to see you try and make me. If you even think of drawing your wand around me, I'll crush you like a bug. You can insult me all you like, I really don't value your opinion enough to bother with it, but stop taking cheap shots at Remus. You say you're his friend, so start acting like it. This isn't your decision to make, Black, it's his."
Before Sirius could answer Remus put himself between the two of them. "Don't do this Sirius. You're my friend and I care for you a great deal. You, James, and Peter were everything to me. You used to say that I had pack instincts; well, you're my pack now, you're all that's left, but Severus and Bella are my mates and I will choose them over you in a heartbeat. It would tear me apart but I'd do it. If you're really my friend you won't force me to make that choice."
Sirius had grown visibly paler during the tirade and his eyes no longer flashed with anger, instead they were shadowed with the fear of losing his last true friend. He looked at Remus who stood in front of Severus as if to shield him from Sirius' wrath. "Remus," he said softly.
"Stay here for tonight, Sirius. We'll talk in the morning I promise. Severus and I are going to meet Bella now, but we'll spend tomorrow together if you want. You can catch up with the school news and tell me what you've been up to these last few months. OK?"
Sirius recognised the olive branch that his friend was offering for what it was.
"Tomorrow. All right. I'll be here."
Remus nodded once before he and Severus left, leaving Sirius alone with his thoughts.
