Chapter Eleven: Thank You
.
(A Week Later.)
"You know, I was walking down the hall, and I passed Snape, and he-"
"What did he do?" James interrupted.
Sirius snickered. "He almost smiled at me."
"He what?" James asked, looking surprised. "You're kidding!"
Sirius shook his head. "I'm not kidding at all. You know, it was like he felt more content with himself or something. Or, at least, he seemed more at ease."
"Really?" James looked thoughtful. "I wonder why."
"As much as he and I don't get along, I feel sorry for him," Sirius commented quietly. "If he actually is happier now, he deserves it."
"I agree with you. I just wonder what exactly happened," James said.
"I'll tell you," Remus murmured as he walked into James' room.
"Don't bother to knock or anything."
"Don't worry, I won't, James," Remus said with a grin. "Besides, the door was cracked open."
Sirius laughed and curled up onto one of the large, plush chairs near the window. "So you heard what we were saying then?"
"Yeah," Remus replied. He sat down on James' bed and looked at his friends. "I talked to Severus last week."
"You did?" Sirius asked, leaning forward. "What happened? Did you tell him you know?"
Remus nodded. "I couldn't help it, Sirius. See, I've sort of liked him for a while now, and I just well, I thought this was my chance." Remus' forehead wrinkled slightly. "That sounded selfish. Like I'm taking advantage of what happened to him."
"You're far from selfish," James replied. He walked across the room and sat down next to Remus. "How come you never told us you liked him?"
"Tell me you're joking," Remus replied. "You two don't like Severus, and you never have. How would you honestly have reacted if I had told you I liked Severus?"
Sirius raised an eyebrow at his boyfriend.
"You have a point there," James said.
"What happened whan you talked to him?" Sirius asked quietly. He looked positively beautiful with his long hair falling all over his black turtleneck. His tight jeans were old and fit him perfectly.
"He was upset at first, but then he broke down completely. And I just held him for several hours until he fell asleep."
Sirius titled his head to the side, causing several strands of hair to fall in front of his face. "I'm sure he needed that."
James looked at his boyfriend sympathetically and tried to resist the urge to take Sirius in his arms right then and there.
"He did," Remus said with a small smile. "Sirius, you and Severus have a lot in common."
"I know."
"I'm not going to tell you everything that happened, but I will tell you that you're right-he is more content now. He's still upset, and he still needs time to heal. But I know he feels better than he did before. And I think that's why he sort of smiled at you-because he was feeling a bit better, and he has had time to think about what both of you have in common."
"I'm sure you're right," James said. "Did he tell Dumbledore?"
Remus shook his head. "I told him he needed to, but he just isn't ready."
"I can understand that," Sirius murmured. "I really wish McGonagall and Dumbledore didn't know about me."
"But, Siri, they're trying to get your father in trouble," James pointed out. "And besides, they're protecting you. Your parents can't get to you ever again!"
Sirius shivered slightly, thinking about the letter he had received from his mom a while back. "The bastard is rich and powerfand and he has connections that you don't even want to think about. There's no way in hell that they'll nail him for what he did."
"Siri, maybe there is a chance that-"
"James, please just let it go," Sirius interrupted.
Sighing, James turned his attention back to Remus. "Why was Severus in my room in the first place?"
"He was here with another Slytherin," Remus replied. "Severus was looking for a book that used to belong to his father. He hates his father, but he wants the book."
James looked confused for a moment.
"We took it after he caused our potion to blow up a few weeks ago," Sirius said softly. "You have it, James."
A look of realization appeared on James' face and he quickly crossed the room to search through his trunk. He grabbed a black book and handed it to Remus.
"Here. Tell him well, I guess yeah, tell him I'm sorry."
Remus took the book from James. "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Tell him I'm sorry, too," Sirius said from his seat near the window. "Maybe he and I should talk sometime."
"I think you should," Remus remarked. He stood up. "I'm heading to the library to get some work done. I'll see you two later."
..
(That Evening.)
Sirius snuggled up next to his best friend. "I thi this," he whispered.
"So do I," James replied warmly.
"I'm glad we're together, James. I know we got off to a dreadful start, but I think things are looking up now," Sirius said as he yawned.
"I agree with you, love."
Sirius closed his eyes and continued to hold onto his boyfriend. "Thank you for everything you've done for me. Don't know what I'd do without you."
"I haven't done everything the right way, Siri," James said, remembering the inncident just last week when he had gone into Sirius' pensieve without permission. Luckily for James, Sirius had forgiven him rather quickly.
"We all make mistakes," Sirius replied. "I know that all too well. I beat you up when you tried to tell me you loved me, James!"
To Sirius' surprise, James just laughed and tenderly kissed the top of his boyfriend's head.
"Thank you, though, James," Sirius murmured sleepily. "I'd be lost without you."
"I feel the same way about you," James replied.
Sirius whimpered peacefully. "G'night."
"Good night, Siri. I love you."
"Mmm, and I love you, James."
The End
A/N: Yeah, I know that was a sappy ending. Sorry!
