Animal Instinct
Part 12-Broomsticks and Bitches

Disclaimer: Not mine don’t sue.
Author’s Note: Hmmm. Could Hermione be expecting a
little….(insert evil grin) you’ll have to continue reading. Anyone know of the
Gretchen Wilson song, Redneck Woman? I love it and when it comes on I sing
along. Somehow beneath Hermiones’ prim façade I think that she would make a
great redneck woman, don’t you? Anyways I’m writing this keeping in mind that
most people haven’t read the 11th part so the number of reviews
concerns me. If you want me to keep posting the parts you’ll continue to
review. Anyways does anyone have any good suggestions for the past and future
chapter titles? Part etc is getting pretty boring. Enough ranting READ!
Albus
watched as his potions professor left the hall in a snit. He turned his gaze to
Remus who looked away guiltily. “Well Remus what have you been doing now?”
Albus asked him quietly as Albus walked by the DADA teacher.
Remus
closed his eyes and sighed. He opened his eyes to see the headmaster still
there. “I simply commented on something.”
“Something….that
involves the situation we discussed earlier this week?” As Remus nodded his
head Albus sighed himself. “Remus we both know that this is neither the time or
the place for such a discussion. Needless to say leave it alone. No
interfering.”
Remus
looked down at his plate. He had made such a promise through Sirius but hadn’t
kept it. But damn it! He didn’t want Hermione hurt and if he knew Severus that
might just happen. “I’ve made such a promise already Albus, I was simply
pointing out the fact that is Severus really prepared for…well you know.”
“Ah sadly
Remus I do know. But that is for them figure out, not us. Now I sincerely hope
that this is where the matter stops.” Albus looked sternly at Remus, who nodded
his head.
Hermione
had always hated flying lessons, that was until her feline DNA started to make
its presence known. Now she was fearless and Madam Hooch couldn’t be happier,
although she hid it from the rest of her students. Hermione walked with
confidence carrying her new broom a Cirrico Firebolt,(an: Cirrico means wind) a
broom that she had made from an old Firebolt. She hadn’t had a lesson in
carpentry but she hadn’t filled all her spare time reading while waiting for
Hogwart’s to start. She lovingly stroked the handle which emblazoned upon it
was a racing horse with clouds streaming from its mane, tail and the feathers
(hair on the bottom of a horses hooves), the handle itself was pure black, the
bristles a mix of gold, orange, yellow, black and red. She saw the Slytherins
laugh and the Gryffindors’ roll their eyes but she didn’t care. She had studied
many books and she knew that by giving her broom a personality, a heart that it
would never be beaten by anything else the wizarding world could mass produce.
Nope her broom was one of a kind.
Madam Hooch
herself raised a brow as she studied Grangers’ broom. “May I?”
Hermione
nodded at her professors’ question and handed over her broom. “I didn’t think that
there would be a problem with me bringing my own broom.” Hermione quietly said.
Madam Hooch
raised her odd coloured eyes and smiled. “Miss Granger I’m not surprised that
your broom is a one of a kind thing. Sort of like you isn’t it? All the fire’s hidden
and only those foolish enough to cross you find it.”
Hermione
blushed and took her broom back. She had no interest in playing Quidditch she
only loved flying, fast and as far as she could. Harry and Ron raised brows at
her. She shrugged. She still hadn’t explained her absence from the first three
classes or why she wasn’t at lunch.
“Nice broom
there mudblood, did your mommy and daddy give it to you or did you beg it off
another witch?”
Hermione
turned around as Madam Hooch walked off. “Well, well, well if it isn’t Malfoy.
Come to get taught?” Hermione purred out, menace filling her every word.
Draco
Malfoy stepped back. He wasn’t afraid of Granger, but something about the way
she held herself; the way she talked made him instantly wary. He couldn’t put a
finger on it, but he could have sworn she would have growled at him if she
could. He sneered. “Taught? By you? A filthy little mudblood? Hah now that’s
funny!” He started to laugh and Crabbe and Goyle joined in.
Hermione
repressed the snarl. SO this little blond bastard thought that he was better
than her? Hah! She was like royalty compared to this…this prima donna. (Sorry
he is sometimes). Hermione sneered herself. “Is that a challenge Malfoy? Yes I
do believe that it is, and since I do believe we get a free period in which to
test our past theories I think that a race is in order. Are you up to being
beaten? By moi? Are you game Malfoy or are you just a chicken?”
Harry
looked at Ron. Ron looked at Harry. “She’s bloody nuts!” Ron whispered loudly.
Hermione heard and threw them a glare.
“Actually
Ron I think that she’s pissed off with Malfoy and she’s going to make him put
up or shut up. I heartily approve, after all Malfoy’s always picked on Hermione
and now she’s going to stand up. I hope she wins, even on that weird broom of
hers. Maybe I should ask her if she wants to borrow my Phoenix Flyer. What do
you think?”
Hermione
smiled and shouted to a surprised Harry and Ron, “No thanks Harry my baby here
is fast enough to take on Malfoy.” Her hearing was now so good that she could
hear what the other gryffindors were up to in the common room while she was
still upstairs in her tower. Of course she tuned it out mostly but sometimes it
came in handy. “Madam Hooch will you please referee the race between Mr. Malfoy
and myself?”
Madam Hooch
smiled. It was about time that a female showed these ignorant males that a
woman could kick just as much ass as a man could. In fact most women were
better at ass kicking since most were lighter than their male counterparts.
Hooch covered her laugh as she thought of Hermiones’ broom. She could sense
that Hermione had done something to it, after all brooms were her lively hood
and she had yet to hear of a Cirrico Firebolt. Damn but she wished her other female
students would challenge some of the males to races more often. “Of course Miss
Granger. Mount your brooms.”
Hermione
sat down on Cirrico, a small smile working its way across her face. “What is
the finish line Madam Hooch?”
“The front
entrance of Hogwart’s is the touch point. Fly there and around and then back
around the school fully twice then come back here. I shall leave all the other
students here and follow you to make sure that it is a fair race.”
Draco
swallowed. He had to win otherwise he would lose face, not to just his own
house and Gryffindor but to all the other males as well. He puffed out his
chest and mounted his broom. His father always made sure he had the best and
this years broom was no exception. Grangers’ broom was very pretty but Malfoy
had never seen one like it so it must be an ancient relic. He chuckled as he
heard the race boundaries. “Child’s play. Don’t cry too loudly Granger when you
lose.”
Hermione
gave a low growl, one that only she and Malfoy could hear. “Then you’d best
learn to play with the adults Malfoy. Kiss my ass and eat my dust.” Hermione
couldn’t resist saying and shot forward as Madam Hooch dropped her hand to
signal the start of the race.
Severus
wand out outside, the period after lunch being a free one for him today. He
glanced above him as he saw to figures on brooms racing, a third following at a
more sedate pace. “Must be Madam Hooch.” Severus said to himself and pause to
watch the two racers. He heard a familiar laugh and his blood froze. ‘Hermione
had always been afraid of heights so why is she racing on a broomstick. Is it
her?’ Severus shook his head and smirked, it couldn’t be Hermione. He turned
his gaze back to the now growing smaller figures and laughed. He too had
enjoyed racing when he was young, but now being a potions professor, a member
of the order and a spy for Voldemort he didn’t have much time left to race, let
alone fly.
Hermione
laughed as she shot ahead Malfoy. The wind tugged her hair and blew it
everywhere. Hermione didn’t care. This was freedom and she wasn’t going to give
it up. She gave into the urge and patted her broom. It gave a little jerk as if
to acknowledge the pat. When Hermiond nad named it after the wind she had meant
it. The broom had been specifically designed to match her in spirit and will
and anyone who knew Hermione Granger knew that she had plenty of both.
Draco
stared helplessly after the cloud trail that Granger was leaving behind in her
wake. He had no hope of winning, he knew that now but who says he couldn’t make
her lose by means other than fair? He pulled his wand out and carefully made
sure Madam Hooch couldn’t see him cast his hex.
Hermione
was enjoying herself and had just passed the halfway point when she felt her
broom jerk under her and then drop. Hermione barely managed to smother her
scream as she fell to the earth. “Damn you Malfoy.” Hermione cried out. The
wind whipped around her as she fell.
Madam Hooch
knew that she couldn’t reach Hermione in enough time to save her and helplessly
watched as her student plummeted.
Hermione
felt the feline in her take over and a peaceful feeling overcame her as she
fell. She couldn’t use magic to stop her from falling but she c use use it to
slow her fall, thus allowing her feline instincts to make sure she landed on
her feet.
Severus
started running as he saw a student fall. There was no telling if it was
Hermione or not but he wasn’t going to stay there and find out the hard way.
End.
Weelllll? Never though Hermione would fly a broom, let alone
race now did we? Review if you want a new chapter posted.
