AN: Here it is, at last,
an update! I finally know exactly where this is going and the end is
in sight folks. But don't despair, I've started work on my next fic,
three chapters written already, though they need a little polishing.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter, the next one should be along a
little quicker as I already know what's going to happen in it ;-p

Chapter
12: Obsession and Encounters
The rest of the weekend
slipped by quietly. Hermione got down to some work, only leaving
Gryffindor tower for meals. She tried hard not to look Malfoy's way
in the great hall, on the odd occasion that her discipline failed, he
seemed oblivious to her existence. She felt the desire to talk to
him, to find out what was going on in his head. It was clear that he
found it as hard to stop their activities as she did, but she
desperately wanted to know what he was thinking and feeling about
her. She looked back on their encounters with something close to
revulsion, but there was a definite sense of passion too. When she
looked at him she didn't feel the tinglings of a crush inside, she
just felt raw energy and heat, a desire to pull him aside and... hex
him? Or drive her tongue into his mouth? She actually wasn't sure and
she hated that uncertainty. The only thing she hated more was the
girly side of her that wanted to get inside his head. Memories of
Lavender and Parvati discussing boys late into the night came to her,
they seemed obsessed with knowing why so and so did this and what
such and such was going to do next. There was a good deal of second
guessing and using divination techniques to predict what their
respective crushes and boyfriends - using the term loosely - would
do. They were also partial to referring to self-help books and as
they got older began using some very colourful language when they got
hurt. Hermione had never been part of all that, she'd only ever had a
couple of crushes and one boyfriend, Viktor, and she had kept all of
her feelings to herself on all three occasions. This thing with
Malfoy was so different and she couldn't understand her own feelings
at all and knew she really couldn'ttalk to anyone about it.
Ron hadn't told anyone
her secret and was trying his best to act normal around her, but
there was a definite tension in the air and Hermione worried that he
might start yelling and pointing his wand again at any time. Harry
and Ginny had noticed the change and asked both Hermione and Ron on
more than one occasion what had happened but they both evaded the
questions and changed the subject quickly. Harry and Ginny weren't
satisfied, but by the end of Sunday they had stopped pushing for
answers and maintained a discrete distance.
Monday came and classes
resumed. People were talking about the party still and some students
seemed keen to organise another one. Hermione tuned it out and went
on with business as usual, although her mind turned to the leaving
party she and Justin were planning. They had kept it quiet and no one
seemed to be discussing the idea themselves. the last thing Hermione
wanted was to spend ages planning a magnificent ball for the seventh
year only to have some fifth years put on another event the same
night. She wasn't too worried, knowing that they would be announcing
the ball just before Easter, giving everyone plenty of notice.
Hermione didn't have to try too hard to avoid Malfoy, the only
subject they were both taking and in the same class for was Potions,
during which he seemed oblivious to her presence. Just as the class
was packing up at the end of the lesson, a quiet ripple of discussion
about the party flowed across the room. Hermione and Malfoy both
stiffened and Snape's attention snapped towards the students, in one
instant he took in the muttered conversations and the two students on
opposite sides of the room standing stock still, stealing sideways
looks at one another. A sneer spread across the Professor's face,
"Very original,"
the class fell quiet, looking up at the source of the amused and
sarcastic voice, "You're hardly the first group of students to
use the Room of Requirement for such a purpose." He looked
directly at Malfoy, reading his expression, Malfoy dropped his eyes
and finished putting his things in his bag. The class was stunned,
Harry leaned in to Hermione and whispered,
"What happened to
that age spell?"
"It must have worn
off over the weekend. Now Snape knows it won't be safe to have
another party there." The whole class seemed to be thinking the
same thing, they were crestfallen.
"I just hope,"
Snape's voice called out over the rising chatter, "no one did
anything they regret." His eyes darted between Malfoy and
Hermione, who looked shocked at his guesswork and still refused to
look directly at one another. As they left the classroom Hermione was
acutely aware of Harry trying to fit the pieces together.
"What was that
about?" He challenged her, "Snape was looking at you? What
happened?" Hermione laughed it off and muttered something about
Snape trying to wind everyone up. She wasn't sure he'd fallen for it,
but he let it drop.
It was Wednesday before
the frustration got too much for Hermione. After breakfast she left
the great hall after Malfoy, even though he was with Crabbe, Goyle
and all of Parkinson's gang, she summoned all of her courage and ran
after him, towards the dungeons.
"Malfoy!" She
called, he turned and looked her up and down with disgust, the group
around him turned to look at her too, after a moment's hesitation she
spoke up, "Can I speak to you, please?"
"You are, aren't
you?" He smirked, Pansy giggled with her friends. Hermione gave
him a stern look, trying to give him a look that told him he didn't
want to mess with her, but he continued to look at her with pure hate
in his eyes, neither of them was going to back down.
"Alone." She
huffed back at him. He cocked an eyebrow.
"What on earth could
you have to say to me that my friends here shouldn't hear?" He
was challenging her, she wasn't going to fall for it.
"Malfoy, you know
exactly what they shouldn't hear, so unless you actually want to
continue this discussion in front of them, by all means. I don't care
either way." His face blanched slightly, but in an instant it
was gone.
"Fuck off, Granger."
He spat, his friends watching with rapt attention, looking from one
to the other as if it were a tennis match. "Stop polluting the
air with your rotten breath." He turned and stalked away, the
other Slytherins filed away behind him, muttering about the bizarre
conversation. Hermione stamped her foot and let out a low growl. She
turned to leave and almost walked right into Professor Snape.
"Sorry sir."
She was horribly embarrassed. How long had he been there? She
wondered.
"Watch where you are
going, Miss Granger. And try to restrict those tender moments with
Malfoy to private locations from now on." He sneered and swept
off in a billow of black robes.
Hermione was reeling
about the stupid scene with Malfoy until the end of the week. She now
knew he hated her and wanted nothing more to do with her. He had had
his way with her and ended his morbid fascination. How could she let
herself be used so horribly? She was shocked at herself and vowed not
to let it happen again. She left Arithmancy with Justin, her last
lesson of the week and they parted ways at the end of the corridor,
she set off on her own, heading towards Gryffindor tower, the bustle
of the corridors thinning as she went. She had just passed a door
that was ajar when she was grabbed from behind and dragged inside.
The door slammed shut and she saw that her assailant was none other
than Malfoy and he looked ready to cast an Unforgivable Curse on her.
"What did you think
you were doing? Approaching me in the hall like that?" She
spluttered, not sure how to respond, he was one to talk. "God,
Granger. I don't want people knowing about us." She frowned,
'us'? she didn't know there was an 'us'.
"Snape knows."
She said, not sure how he would react.
"Yes. And that's bad
enough, he's the head of my house. But I'm more bothered about my
friends finding out. I'd never live it down." She huffed,
thoroughly insulted, but knew he had a point.
"I don't think my
friends would be particularly chuffed either." She said, knowing
full well that one of them was furious as hell about it already.
Malfoy was pacing in front of the door, Hermione leaned back against
a shelf. "I'm sorry." He stopped pacing and looked at her.
"I just wanted to talk to you, to find out how you felt about
the other night. I really shouldn't have bothered. Your feelings are
perfectly clear." He laughed, she wasn't sure what was funny
though.
"No, they're not."
He replied, Hermione eyed him cautiously, waiting for him to
continue. He said nothing, instead he grabbed her hand and pulled her
into a passionate kiss, his hands in her hair. It would have been one
of those Hollywood kisses, the camera spinning around the couple with
climactic music blaring; but they were in a broom cupboard.
