MEASURE OF A MAN
Why do you ask him move to heaven and earth
To prove his love has worth?
Would he walk on water?
Would he run through fire?
Would he stand before you,
When it is down to the wire?
Would he gave his life up
To be all he can?
Is that, is that, is that how you measure a man?
Chapter 10: New Friends, New Enemies
All talk in the Great Hall stopped when McGonagall came in, carrying the Sorting Hat. Hermione followed her, wearing Hogwarts robes without a house crest.
Hermione followed the Deputy Headmistress to the front of the main table, and turned to face her fellow students.
Everyone waited while McGonagall lowered the Sorting Hat onto her head, holding their breath. Hermione’s re-sorting had caused a flurry of wagers, for stakes including candy, homework assistance, and money.
After several agonizing moments, during which the hat twisted and turned on Hermione’s head, it finally straightened up and made its pronouncement:
“Slytherin!”
There were several minutes of stunned silence while the Sorting Hat was removed from Hermione’s head and she made her way to her new house. The Slytherins were the most astonished by the Hat’s pronouncement. They looked at Hermione in shock, and then in hostility.
Draco broke the ice by moving over at his seat across from Harry.
“Don’t just stand there, Granger,” he said. “Sit down and fill your plate. If you wait too long, Crabbe and Goyle will have eaten everything.”
“Thanks, Malfoy,” she said, sliding onto the seat next to him. “You’re not going to start being nice or anything, are you?”
“Of course not, Granger,” Draco said. “Not even after you marry my father.”
“Good,” she said, smiling at him. “I would like something to stay the same, after everything that’s changed.”
Harry picked up the dish of mashed potatoes and passed it to Hermione. He glared at Crabbe until the other student picked up the pitcher of pumpkin juice and offer it to her, as well.
~*~*~*~*~
After dinner, Harry and Draco made a point of walking with Hermione down to the dungeons. They were followed by several Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs, muttering words like ‘traitor’ and ‘turncoat’, but none of them dared to do anything about it.
They didn’t bother to go to the Slytherin common room, but went straight to the quarters that they now shared. Snape and Lucius had preceded them, and they were waiting in the sitting room.
“I have your revised class schedule, Miss Granger,” Snape said. “If any of your classmates give you any trouble, make certain that you either come to me, or do not get caught retaliating. If any Slytherins give you any trouble, do what you will, so long as it does not involve a trip to the Hospital Wing.”
“At least we won’t have to worry about the House Cup this year,” Draco said, smirking. “Or the Quidditch Cup, for that matter.”
“That is one way of securing both for Slytherin,” Lucius said. He smiled as Hermione sat down next to him and leaned into his side. He raised his arm and wrapped it around her, allowing her to lean in closer to him.
“I thought you should take a trip to Diagon Alley, Severus,” Lucius said. “I want Hermione to go shopping, so that she has something decent to wear in Wizarding society, and I’m certain that she’d like to go book shopping without having to worry about what the books cost.”
“I couldn’t do that, Lucius,” Hermione protested. “I always worry about what things cost.”
“Hm,” he said, a pensive look on his face. “How about this: I’ll give you an allowance each month for books, and another one for clothes and other things. I want you to take into account that you will be my wife after you graduate, and as such, you have a certain social standing to maintain. You will be expected to have appropriate clothing for formal occasions, semi-formal occasions, and even your casual clothing should be of a certain quality.
“You needn’t worry about jewelry,” Lucius continued. “Unless you see a piece that you want, or unless you decide to have something custom made. I never gave Narcissa any of the family jewels. The women’s jewelry that was set aside for Draco’s wife will no longer need to be held, so there is a large collection to choose from. We can make arrangements to go both to Gringott’s and to the Manor, so you can choose both from the vaults and from the library.”
“Where is she going to keep these books?” Snape asked.
“Our room has a private library, Severus,” Lucius said. “Apparently, when the castle rearranged everything, it took Hermione’s habits into account.”
“Very well,” Snape said. “I agree that a trip to Diagon Alley could be useful. It is not too early for all of us to think about Christmas.”
“Absolutely,” Lucius said. “I’ll contact Gringotts, and let them know that Hermione and Draco need to do some shopping.”
“I know where to take her, Father,” Draco said. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I’m not worried, Draco,” Lucius said. “Severus, I will give you my proxy, and a list of items that I wish you to purchase. I also would like you to pick up a few items from my vault.”
“Very well,” Snape said. “I will tell the Headmaster that I am going to take Harry, Draco, and Miss Granger to Diagon Alley on Saturday.”
“Better than a trip to Hogsmeade, any day,” Draco said.

Harry and Draco stood at the entrance to Flourish and Blotts and watched Herimone shop for books. She had already put five loads on the counter, and she was only one third of the way through the shop.
“Your father must have given her some allowance,” Harry commented.
“My father is generous with family,” Draco said. “He always has been. He likes to make money, and he has often said that he uses it to make the people around him happy.”
“Well, at least you don’t have to worry about who’s going to be Lord Malfoy after you,” Harry said. “Hermione’s said lots of times that she wants a big family.”
“Father always wanted more children, too,” Draco said wistfully. “Mother wouldn’t think of it, though. She didn’t want to go through childbirth more than once, even with the pain potions and other things. I hope Granger is a little tougher than my mother.”
“She is,” Harry said. “She’s been right behind me every time I’ve gotten in trouble. Your father’s going to have his hands full.”
“Life won’t be dull,” Draco said. “You do realize that, once the war is over, we’re probably all going to be living in the Manor?”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing, Draco,” Harry said, smiling. “Here comes Severus. It’s my turn to shop first.”
“Suit yourself, Harry,” Draco said, turning his attention back to Hermione’s book collecting. “I get to take her to get clothing, next.”
“Not without me, Draco,” Snape said as he came to a stop behind them both. “You and Miss Granger will go no farther than Fortescue’s until Harry and I return.”
“Whose orders were those?” Draco asked.
“You father’s, the Headmaster’s, and Madam Bones,” Snape replied. “No one is interested in seeing you or Miss Granger captured or injured.”
“We better stop her, then,” Draco said. “We won’t be able to carry everything, otherwise.”
“You’re not thinking like a wizard, Draco,” Harry said. “We’ll shrink the books, and they’ll all fit in one bag.”
“Neither one of you is thinking,” Hermione’s voice made them all look at her. “I’m having them delivered. Honestly, Harry, you really never do think.”
“That put you in your place,” Draco said, smirking.
“No more than you,” Harry retorted.
“Enough,” Snape said. “Let’s get to the clothier before this degenerates any further.”
“I couldn’t agree more, Professor,” Hermione said. “Lead the way, Malfoy.”
“You’re going to be impossible as my stepmother,” Draco said, leading them to a section of Diagon Alley that Harry had never seen before.
