Chapter 12 – Some Truths
Are Scarier Than Fiction
Dinner that night was rather pleasant. Hermione and Draco
sat together at the table, talking to Severus about a new potion that had just
been discovered. Harry and Ginny sat at the other end, chatting happily with
Ron and Neville.
The Potters and the (soon-to-be) Malfoys couldn’t help but
give amused looks to each other when Ron or Neville or Severus would try to
surreptitiously watch each other.
After dinner they went back into Draco’s study to discuss
what would be happening the next day.
“I believe through that link is the way to go,” Severus
stated after they had all settled down. “Ron and I will be in the center, so I
can meld with him. The rest of you will form an outer circle around us and will
use your bonds to help.”
“So… you’re going to be in the center with me?” Ron gave
Severus a sidelong glace. Something in that glance gave Severus butterflies in
his stomach, although he’d never admit it. Then he felt it… or heard it, he was
never sure which. He felt that bond forming… he felt the bond reaching… Then he
felt the bond fall into place with an almost physical snap. The Potions Master didn’t respond for a few seconds, trying
to identify with whom he’d just bonded to…
“Yes,” Severus answered. “I’m, of us all, the most
experienced with the type of compulsions that Lucius would use. More
importantly, I know how to break them.” Severus turned to look back at Ron,
when he realized… Oh, Gods, it had to be
HIM, didn’t it? Not only the best friend of the
Boy-Who-Lived-To-Be-The-Bane-Of-My-Existence, but a Weasley, for Merlin’s sake! He shook his head
slightly and held Ron’s gaze for a moment.” I won’t let anyone get hurt. Ron
will not come to harm, Hermione and her baby, Ginerva and her babies – will not
come to harm.” He looked everyone in the eyes, and as he completed the circuit
of the room his eyes came back to Ron’s. “I promise.”
Ron reached out and laid his hand on Severus’ cheek. “I
trust you, Severus,” was all he said. Severus’ eyes went round. No one had ever
said that to him, while looking at him like that. It was unnerving, and
wonderful, and… Oh, Gods! He held Ron’s
eyes for a moment, eyes slightly narrowed. Could he trust this very young man? Should he trust him? He dropped his scrutiny of the man he’d
somehow bonded to, put his head in his hands, and groaned softly.
“Severus? What’s wrong?” Hermione asked with concern.
Oh, I don’t think you really want to know
right now…”Slight headache.” Severus said, lifting his head out of his hand
and grimaced. “I’ve had it most of the day. I think I’m going to retire for the
night.” He stood up and looked at Ron again, briefly. “Goodnight
everyone, pleasant dreams.” Then he strode from the room.
And Ron Weasley wondered why it felt like his heart had just
broken.
*************
“Did you see the looks that passed between him and Ron?”
Ginny asked, completely flabbergasted.
“I know…” Draco agreed. “In all the years I’ve known
Severus, I’ve never once seen him react to anyone
like that.”
“You don’t suppose…?” started Hermione. “No – no; that be
couldn’t be it – could it?” She turned to Harry.
“I think you’re right.” He nodded.
“Will one of you please fill in the blanks!
I hate it when you two do this!” Ginny protested.
“You mean they’ve done that before? Talk in half sentences
like that?” Draco asked Ginny.
“All the time!” She threw her hands
up. “All the bloody time! They’ll sit there and talk
like that until you tell them to stop.” She sighed. “Now, will one of you
please tell me what you’re on about?”
“They were saying how they think Severus and Ron might be
falling for each other.” Draco supplied.
“Exactly!” Harry and Hermione said
in unison.
Ginny fixed Draco with a cold stare and he returned it with
and impudent grin. “Et tú, Bruté?” was all she said.
“Oh, c’mon honey, it’s not that bad,” Harry laughed at his wife. “Just ‘cause
Draco got the jist the first time doesn’t mean you can’t.”
“Back to Ron.” Ginny said with
great dignity. “So you think that just because he promised to keep Ron safe,
Severus is falling for Ron?”
“It was the whole thing, Ginny,” explained Hermione. “The
look, what he said, ‘I promise.’ And Ron’s reaction.”
Ginny shook her head at her friends. “That doesn’t make any
sense.”
Draco rolled his eyes. “Severus didn’t just say “I promise
to protect you from Lucius.” He looked directly into Ron’s eyes, held his gaze.
He said it to Ron. Not anyone
else. He said it to Ron. “I promise.” He made sure Ron understood. I think Ron’s
reaction really through him for a loop. It was almost like he knew what he was
saying, meant every word, and wasn’t quite sure why it was coming out of his
mouth like that. I’m sure he never thought that Ron would be amenable.” Draco
chuckled.
“I think there’s more.” Hermione gave Ginny a speculative
look, and Ginny’s eyes widened. “You don’t suppose…”
“That quickly, though?” Ginny asked her. “I mean, is that how it’s supposed to…”
“Yes,” Harry said. “I knew that quickly that it was you I
wanted to be with for the rest of my life. I knew before out first date was
over.”
“And I knew that quickly about Hermione.” Draco added. “It
was like a piece of the puzzle finding its niche.”
“I felt the same way.” Hermione smiled at him.
“Well…” Ginny started. “I always knew I’d be with Harry. I
had dreams about our wedding from about 5 years old and up.” She smiled at the
shocked look of her husbands face. “And it happened exactly like my dream said
it would.”
“So. Severus and Ron – bonded.”
Draco summarized. “Will that join wit the bond Ron’s already got with Neville,
or will it be separate?”
“Well, the fact that he really only included Neville in the
look when he included everyone else, also, is a good indication,” sighed
Hermione. “Poor Neville.”
Everyone looked at her and sighed. “Poor
Neville.” They agreed.
*************
Ron and Neville had gone back to their room right after
Severus left. And Neville was not
happy.
“What the hell was all that
about?” Neville shouted when he walked into the suite.
“What?” asked a dazed Ron.
“What the hell was
with those looks – and the way he kept talking
to you.”
“How the hell am I
supposed to know?” Ron snapped.
“You’re in love with him, aren’t you?” Neville accused.
“Neville…” Ron groaned. It was going to be one of those nights…
“Just admit it, Ron,” sneered
Neville. “You’ve always wanted him, and now he’s decided he wants you, and you
can’t stop thinking about him.”
Ron had had enough. Neville was always going off on Ron
because he thought Ron wanted everyone else but him. And it has always been the
farthest thing from the truth.
Until
Severus.
Because Ron did want the Potions Master. Wanted him with such intensity
it almost hurt.
And he didn’t feel the same way about Neville.
It must have shown on his face, because Neville paled, then
turned away from him.
“Neville…”
“Don’t Ron.” Neville turned sad, puppy dog eyes on him. “I
love you. I hope he makes you very happy.” Then he turned again and Apparated
away.
*************
Severus had been in a pensive mood after dinner. Something
about the whole episode with Ronald Weasley disturbed him. He had gotten a
headache after the plans were made. After the episode with
Ron. After he felt…
He couldn’t – wouldn’t – think about it. That’s why his head
ached.
So he decided to go for a walk on the grounds before going
to bed. Now he was on his way back to the suite, feverishly hoping that the two
young men were already in their room or not back yet. He just wanted to sneak
in and barricade in his room so he could figure out what to do.
He got only half his wish. Ron was there, but Neville
wasn’t. All of the lights had been extinguished, but the fire and Ron was
sitting in front of it.
The Potions Master said hell to Ron on his way passed, but
Ron didn’t respond, didn’t even move. Just sat staring into
the fire.
Severus stopped at his door and turned to look back to make
sure he was okay. When he looked at Ron, he realized he was crying. He cried
silently, letting the tears roll down his cheeks.
“Mister Weasley, is there something wrong?” Severus asked
him, taking a few steps towards the fire.
“He’s gone.” Ron’s voice was toneless. This was not good.
“He’s gone?” Severus repeated dumbly.
“Neville left me. Told me he loved me and that he hoped
you’d make me very happy.” Ron explained as two more tears rolled down,
unchecked.
“He hoped I’d make
you happy?” Severus sat next to Ron, completely stunned.
“And what’ worse it, he was right.” Ron turned his face away
from Severus.
“What was he right about, Ronald?” Severus asked quietly.
Ron turned his eyes back to the fire, carefully avoiding the
Potions Masters gaze. “He was always getting jealous – always thinking that I
wanted to be with other people – that I wasn’t in love
with him.” He wiped the tears off his face. “But that was never true. I never
wanted anyone else – ever. It had always been him. Oh, I’d had fantasies of
another person – but that’s all they were – fantasies. I had no intention of
ever following through. He knew about it, of course, I never kept anything from
him. And as long as it was a fantasy, and only
a fantasy, he was fine with it, he even said he’d like to share in it. Now, though,” he sighed heavily. “Now it’s more than
just a fantasy – it’s an obsession. I tried to rid my mind of it – Neville even
suggested that I we were able to act it out it would go away. Merlin knows that
I wanted it to,” Ron looked at Severus briefly, then turned his gaze back to
the fire.
“Then tonight, after dinner, on our way back into the study
Harry says “Good news, you two – Severus switched rooms with us so we can have
some privacy.” I thought Neville’s head was going to pop,” he looked back at
Severus. “Then you made me that promise, and I couldn’t help myself. I felt
like a moth drawn to flame. I couldn’t look away from you.” He sighed again. “I
felt it snap, the bond between Neville and I.
I know he must have felt it, too. Then I felt another one begin to form. I
tried to fight it. I tried to stop it, but I couldn’t.” Ron looked at Severus
in the eyes as tears started rolling down his cheeks again. “How could it
happen, Sev? How could I fall in love with you? How could the bond take root
that quickly?”
Severus Snape, Potions Master, spy against Voldemort, sat
there, stunned. Ron sat there and poured his heart out to him, told him
everything, and all he could think was: In
love? He’s in love with me?
Ron searched Severus’ face for an answer, but when all he
got was a blank stare, he sighed. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I told you all
of that.” He looked at Severus again, and two fat tears rolled down his cheeks.
“I’m going to bed.” And he gathered himself and stood up to leave.
When Ron apologized to him, Severus mentally shook himself.
The younger man was plainly sincere, and Severus was forced to admit the one
thing he never wanted to experience.
He was in love. And with Ronald Weasley,
of all people. He could feel Ron’s heart starting to break, and it was
so closely tied to his own heart, that it felt as if his heart were breaking.
He’s going to walk out
and you’ll never see him again! Severus thought. Get a hold yourself, man! Tell him how you feel!
As Ron stood to leave, Severus stood also, putting a
restraining hand on Ron’s arm. Ron looked at Severus with surprise plain in his
eyes.
“Wait,” he croaked. “Ron, I…” he looked
down at the floor and then looked back at Ron with a pained expression. “I
have been a man that was never going to fall in love. It wasn’t right. I spied
on the Dark Lord for most of my adult life and it wasn’t right to open myself
to a relationship when I was trying daily to get myself killed.” He grimaced.
“And afterwards, after Voldemort was defeated, I just didn’t have the desire,
the energy, to devote to another
person.”
“I understand, Severus – it’s alright…” Ron started, when
Severus shook his head violently.
“No. You don’t.” Severus took a deep breath. “Because tonight, in the study, I felt it, too. I felt the
bond grow.” He looked into Ron’s surprised eyes and smiled the only smile Ron
had ever seen on his lips. “Tonight, in the study, I realized that I had fallen
in love with you, Mr. Weasley. I’m sorry about Neville. This wasn’t part of the
plan, but there’s no escaping it. I love you, Ron.”
Ron searched Severus’ eyes, and smiled the most
heart-warming smile he had ever seen. “I love you, too, Severus,” he laughed. “That just sounds… weird. I never thought I’d hear myself
saying that to you, of all people.”
Severus laughed as he pulled Ron into his arms. “I
understand. Let’s not dwell on that, however. Let me show you just how much I
love you.” And he let Ron into his room and proved to him, over and over that
night, that he did, indeed, love him.
*************
The next morning at breakfast, Hermione was surprised to see
only the Potters and Draco sitting at the table.
“Good morning,” greeted Hermione. “Have Severus and the boys
already been down?”
“Nope,” supplied Ginny. “We haven’t seen hide nor hair of them.”
“I hope they didn’t get too… rambunctious.” Draco laughed.
“Maybe he shagged them to death.” Harry grinned.
“Or maybe I
shagged him to death.” Chimed in Ron as he strolled into the kitchen, grinning, with
Severus.
He was also holding tightly to Severus’ hand.
“No need to ask what the two of you’ve been up to.” Giggled Ginny as the two men sat down. “Where’s
Neville? You two didn’t leave him tied up, did you?”
Severus looked at Ron, who looked hard at the top of the
table.
“What happened?” Hermione asked, putting an arm around Ron.
I’m not sure if he’s read to discuss that with anyone right
now, Mya.” Severus said. Hermione looked up, startled, at Severus. As far as
she could remember that was only the 2nd time he’d ever used her
nickname.
“It’s okay, Sev.” Ron looked into
his eyes. Then he looked around at the rest of them. “Neville left last night,
and he’s not coming back.” He took a deep breath ad told them all what he had
told Severus. He told them everything – about Neville’s suspicions, about the
fight, about Neville leaving…and, finally, he told them that he had confessed
to Severus that he was in love with the Potions Master.
“Oh, Ron,” sighed Hermione. “You do seem to have
extraordinary luck with relationships.” She squeezed his shoulders. “You never
mean for them to go bad, but somehow that’s what always seems to happen.”
“There’s something Ron didn’t tell you,” Severus rose an
eyebrow at Ron and he nodded. “Last night, after dinner, the bond between Ron
and Neville snapped.” They all gaped at him. “As far as we’ve been able to tell
that’s the same time that we bonded.”
“Well, we knew that.”
Ginny waved a dismissing hand. “Not about the bond breaking, but about the bond
developing with the two of you.”
“How did you...?” Severus gasped.
“Well, it wasn’t hard to figure out,” chuckled Harry. “We
saw how the two of you were reacting to each other.” He looked around at the
others. “Come to think of it, I think I felt
it start – anyone else experience the same thing?”
“Yes,” supplied Hermione. “I felt it start, but didn’t
figure out what it was until we all started comparing notes.”
“I felt it, too,” agreed Draco, as Ginny nodded.
“Did any of you feel the bond between Ron and Neville snap?”
Severus asked, eyes intent.
“No,” said Hermione, eyes wide with surprise. “No, we didn’t.
We even discussed if we thought the bond between the two of you was connected
to Neville or not. We all decided that, given the reaction the two of you had
to each other, it was probably separate from Ron and Neville’s.”
“Well,” said Ginny with concern. “If we felt your bond form, shouldn’t we have felt
the one between Neville and Ron snap?”
“You should have,” said Severus, deep in thought.
“What does it mean, Sev?” Ron asked quietly.
“I’m not sure, Ronald.” Severus looked into his eyes. “I
have a feeling that we’ll find out, though, once we’ve melded and I start to
break the compulsions that Lucius placed on you.” His eyes grew thoughtful again.
“I wonder…”
“You wonder what, Severus?” asked Draco.
“I don’t want to say just yet, Draco. I want to get into
that meld and check something out before I give explanations or theories.”
“Well, then, we’d better have something more than coffee for
breakfast.” Ginny got up form the table and starting bustling
around the kitchen making breakfast for the whole group.
Breakfast was full of joking and laughter between the three
couples. Ron was surprised at the quick wit and dry humor of Severus. No one
was safe from his razor jabs and at one point the girls had to pound on the
backs of Harry and Draco because they were laughing so hard.
“Alright,” Severus stood from the table, pulling Ron up with
him, arm around his waist. “Now that we’ve eaten and
had some humor, let’s go to the study and get into that meld.”
They all nodded and after piling the dishes in the sink for
the house elves to do, they traipsed the halls of the manor back to Draco’s
private study to get to work.
“I want Hermione and Draco sitting here,” pointed Severus. “And
I want Harry and Ginny here.” He pointed to his opposite side. “I want you to
link with your respective spouses and then link to the others. Once you’ve set
up the outer link, I’ll be able to start the meld with Ron.” He pulled two
chairs into te middle of the
2 couples, sat in one and gestured for Ron to sit in the other.
As Ron sat, he started getting nervous. In just a moment
Severus and he were going to be more intimately joined than they were last night, and Severus would be able to see every part of Ron.
What if what he found there disgusted him and he turned away from Ron? What if
he broke the heartbond and cast Ron out of his life forever? Just as Ron was
getting himself worked into a panic, Severus reached out and took both his
hands.
“Ron, there is nothing you could have in your past that can
possibly be worse than what I have in mine.
If you’re willing to look past that, how could I not do the same for you? I
love you, there’s no way I’d ever let that go, no matter what!” He gazed
directly into Ron’s eyes, and let him see and feel all of his love for him. Ron’s
eyes opened wide in shock, then softened as he allowed
everything he felt for his old professor to flow from him Severus’ steady gaze.
When he was calm, and they were fully connected through
their bond, Severus’ deep rumble announced “Everything is ready, let’s start.” Then
he felt as if he and Severus suddenly melted into one being. There were no
hidden feelings, thoughts, or memories from the other. He could even feel the
others, remotely.
*************
Lucius gazed indifferently at his servant. All the careful
planning, all the magic invested – all wasted!
“I’m sorry, Master,” his servant bowed low. “I have
temporarily lost the connection with Ron Weasley. I will go to him one they’ve
got him back in England,
then I will re-establish our connection. H will once
again be within your control.”
Lucius studied his servant through hooded eyes. At first
glance, one would think him soft, easily frightened. Upon closer inspection,
however, it was easy to see that both appearances were completely fabricated –
but only if you knew what to look for. Even part of his fear of Lucius was not
wholly real – but only part. After all his servant knew what Lucius was capable
of – whether he was in Azkaban or not.
“Very good,” Lucius said after his servant finally started
to fidget. “You will get Mr. Weasley back
under my control, or things will become most
unpleasant for you.”
“Yes, Master. My pleasure, Master.”
Smirked Neville Longbottom.
*************
As Severus drifted through the endless sea that was his
heartbonded, marveling at the depth of Ron’s love for him, he finally came to
the place that once held the connection to Neville and followed it – and what
he saw rocked him back from Ron, pulling them apart. With the sudden
re-emergence into cold, mundane reality came the resurfacing of everything he’d
just learned. He felt tears on his face, heard himself sobbing, but didn’t
connect them to his own body for a full minute after breaking the meld.
Quickly he wiped at his eyes to clear the blurring and his
cheeks to dry them. When he was finally able to see Ron’s face again, he could
see that he, too, was sobbing with tears rolling down his cheeks.
That sight alone almost undid him, again. He pulled Ron off
his chair and into his lap, comforting the young man with whispered words and
soft kisses to his neck. Ron burrowed his face into Severus’ neck, breathing in
the scent of sandalwood, patchouli and dragon’s blood – the scent that had
always meant ‘Severus’ to Ron. He kissed Severus’ neck then pulled back to look
into those deep, dark eyes. Eyes locked, blue to black, and they lost
themselves in each other.
“Bloody hell!” Hermione gasped as
everyone felt the wash of Severus and Ron’s emotions for each other come over
them. Severus and Ron broke their gaze to look at Hermione, identical quizzical
expressions on their faces with eyebrows raised.
“Funny, Mya, I thought that was my line,” chuckled Ron.
“Well, you’d be saying that, too, if you just felt what we
just felt.” Breathed Ginny.
Harry and Draco just nodded dumbly, staring at Severus and
Ron.
Severus’ eyebrows were almost lost in his hairline as he
said, “And exactly what did you feel?”
“You – and him – all – all of it.” Stuttered Harry. “We felt all of you emotions – the love – that you two have for each other.
Bloody hell!”
Draco nodded. “And there was an undercurrent of – well –
eroticism. I’ve only felt that when I’m with Mya. Bloody fucking hell!”
Ron blushed from neck to hair, a great crimson flood that
looked like all the blood in his body had suddenly decided to take up residence
in his face. “Uh – so, Sev, what did you find out?”
Severus chuckled at Ron switching subjects, although he was
grateful for the distraction. “Well, I’m not sure how you all felt what you
did, but that will be put on the back burner. We have serious problems. I know
how Ron was subdued into the compulsions set by Lucius, and I know who helped
him.”
“Helped?” Squeaked Ron. “I thought I
was the help, the servant. You mean there’s another one?”
“Actually, you were only a ‘tool’ being used by the servant.
He sought you out specifically by Lucius’ request. I’m sure he figured that he’d
be able to use you to break up the “Golden Trio” and cause pain to you all.”
“But – who would hate us that much? Who would help Lucius
willingly to try and hurt us?”
“Well, I do know
that answer, unfortunately.”
Confused, Harry cocked his head and asked, “’Unfortunately’?
How could it be unfortunate to know who Lucius’ ally is?”
“Because he’s quite close to almost
everyone here, and especially to Ronald.” Severus shook his head,
disgusted that he hadn’t seen it sooner. “Well, now we know why we didn’t all
feel the bond snap – it was an outside bond.” Severus said as he looked at Ron.
The dawn of horrified understanding rose in everyone’s eyes.
Ron’s, however, merely rolled into the back of his head and Harry, with his
Seeker reflexes, had to jump forward to stop Ron from cracking his head as he
fainted.
