Chapter 12: You did what?
Severus looked over one stack of parchments as the King rambled out loud. “Hermione’s husband should be someone…”
“You can trust,” Severus offered.
“Yes. He should be titled too,” the King said, ruffling through papers.
“Not necessarily. It’s more important that it be someone she can talk to and will give her good advice without trying to take the throne.” Severus watched the old man think this over. “He should also be smart or Hermione is going to talk circles around him and leave him feeling confused.”
“You have a point, my dear boy,” the King said with a chuckle. “He should have courtly manners.”
“Maybe someone already in a position of trust,” Severus hinted.
“Yes, and he should be handsome too!” the king exclaimed, going through even more parchment, scattering half of them to the floor.
Severus scowled, “I do not think Princess Hermione is worried about superficial appearances.”
“Quite right, my boy. Now let’s see. That narrows it down to two people: you and the Majordomo,” the King said with a wince as he looked at the two pieces of parchment in front of him.
“We would find the Majordomo locked in a tower babbling insanely in a week’s time.” Severus smirked, actually enjoying that image.
“Well you and she seem to get along fine. What do you say, my boy, will you marry Hermione?” The King looked at him, waiting for Severus’s response.
Severus pretended to ponder this for a while as if coming to a grave decision. “My King, I would be honored to marry Hermione,” Severus said with a bow.
“Good! That settles it. We’ll tell her later that we still need to find someone for Megan,” the King said, keeping Severus from going to look for Hermione. He scowled at the King and picked up another stack of parchments to search through.

Hermione glared as another servant offered her tea. Both the Queen and Megan had dragged her out to the gardens to await her fate. The servant set the tray down and retreated to the other side of the alcove they were in. Another servant had been about to offer her some biscuits but thought better of it as she scowled at him.
“Hermione, stop scaring the servants,” the Queen admonished. “I’m sure your father will choose the right man for you. After all, he has Severus helping him.”
“That is what I’m afraid of.” Hermione hissed as she watched Megan work on her embroidery.
“Relax, Hermione; Father will make the right choice for both of us,” Megan informed, not looking up from her work.
“The fact that they are making a choice which should be mine to make is what is upsetting me,” Hermione snapped at them.
“My dear, you are starting to act like Severus,” the Queen informed her, ignoring the glare Hermione sent her way. “You have been hanging out with him too much. This finding a husband will be good for you - if nothing else, it will get you away from him.”
Hermione’s eyes widened in disbelief. She hadn’t even considered the fact that the King might choose someone besides Severus, though she highly doubted Severus would allow that. She was just ticked that Severus didn’t have the balls to ask her properly.
“Speaking of Satan,” she said, causing both the Queen and Megan to look toward the castle.
“May I join you ladies?” Severus asked, and when the Queen nodded, he sat down next to Hermione and started pouring himself tea. He ignored the questioning looks he was getting from the two young ladies at the table. “Your husband, my dear Queen, takes too much time with details.”
“Oh, Severus, stop trying to keep us in suspense. It does not suit you,” Hermione scolded him.
“I’m sorry, Severus; she has been in a foul mood all day,” the Queen apologized for Hermione.
“Yes. Well, Megan, your father has chosen Lord McCloud of Scotland. The marriage will strengthen the ties.” Severus informed her. He was waiting for the explosion which never came. Instead Megan’s eyes seemed to light up.
“I remember him. When I was about six he and his father came to visit. He was about sixteen at the time. When father tried to introduce him, I had conned the weapons master out of a lesson. He said something about praying for our country because they would have an unladylike queen. I think I challenged him to a duel for that comment and proceeded to beat him with my wooden sword.” She laughed at her own story and then saw the look of horror on the Queen’s face. “You must remember that my mother had died shortly after birth and I was being raised by a castle full of men. I didn’t know how a proper lady was suppose to act until I went to finishing school,” she reassured her stepmother.
“And what of my dear Hermione?” the Queen questioned Severus.
“Oh yes, do tell.” Hermione rolled her eyes and proceeded to glare at Severus.
“Do you really need to ask, Hermione?” Severus asked with a raised eyebrow.
“No I don’t, you conceited pig!” Hermione snapped at him then stood up and stormed away.
“Pardon me,” Severus said to the Queen and Megan before going after the angry Hermione. The Queen looked at Megan questioningly and Megan just shrugged.
Severus’s long strides made it easy to catch Hermione. He grabbed her arm and turned her to face him. He almost took a step back due to the anger in her eyes. “Would you have rather I let him marry you off to a total stranger?” He could feel his temper rising to match hers.
“No! I would have rather you had the balls to ask me yourself instead of forcing my hand!” she shouted at him.
“Would you have said yes?” he growled at her.
“I guess we’ll never know now will we?” She yanked her arm out of his hold and stormed down the hall, giving a very good impression of the man she left standing there.

Hermione slammed the door to her room with as much force as she could muster. She flopped down in the chair in front of the fire and glared at it as if it were the reason for all her problems. She heard the door slowly open and then close quietly.
“My Lady, is something wrong?” Melody asked.
“I’ve been ordered to marry Severus.” Hermione’s voice lacked any emotion.
“But that is good, my Lady. You love the Lord Severus. We all see it.” Melody sat down next to her.
“Does he love me, though? If he does, why didn’t he just ask me instead of convincing the King that it was his idea to arrange a marriage between us?” Hermione mused.
“He loves you. Why, you should have seen the look in his eyes when he carried you in here, shouting for the healer the entire time. He was almost insane he kept mumbling something about Hogwarts and potions. Then when the healer said you’d live, it was like relief flooded through him,” Melody told her. “As for convincing the King to arrange a marriage between you two... well, that is just Severus for you. He is unsure of his feelings toward you and your feelings toward him. If he had asked you there was the possibility, in his mind at least, that you would have said no.”
“So he was just being his conniving self.” Hermione sighed. “I don’t know, Melody; you’re right on everything. I just don’t like the fact that I have no say in the matter.”
“Would you have rather he let you marry a total stranger?” Melody asked.
“Funny. That is exactly what he said.” Hermione groaned. “The way I acted, and the way he acted... I don’t think there is any way to repair this. He probably thinks I don’t have any feelings for him.”
“In times like these, it is good to be friends with the servants.” Melody smiled. “Maybe he just needs some of that manipulation turned back on him.”
“How?” Hermione asked, leaning forward conspiratorially.
“Well you see the King has this habit of sneaking down to the kitchen for a late night snack.” Melody grinned evilly. “This is what we’ll do…”

The next day:
“Severus!” the King shouted merrily. Severus was not in the mood as he had been trying to find Hermione all morning and was not having any luck.
“Yes, my King?” Severus said as politely as possible as he turned to meet the King, who was actually jogging up to him in his excitement.
“I have some good news for you my boy. It seems you wont have to marry Hermione after all.” The King didn’t see the look that crossed Severus’s face or he might have rethought his decision.
