Chapter 12 Tears Roll
Voldemort was incensed. ‘That girl, there was something about her that he needed to remember, but could not quite bring to the fore.
And that stone round her neck, it was familiar too. But why? And how had a chit of a girl bested him and some of his best Deatheaters? It should not have been possible.’ He would have that traitor Snape back here soon and have some answers.
Severus stirred and opened his eyes, closed them, and opened them again. He was in his own bed back at Hogwarts. The trouble was that he could not remember coming back here. The last thing he remembered was the Dark Lord Crucio’ ing him over and over.
Word got back to the Dark Lord that something strange was happening at Hogwarts. Snape had been making miraculous recoveries after being summoned when he should have been laid up for days. He also knew that Snape was still hiding something from him and he was growing impatient with the Potions Master. That was the reason for calling him tonight. The reason Voldemort lost his temper and repeatedly cursed him.
‘But when did he come back here?’ Desperate for the bathroom he got out of bed and went to use the toilet, completely unaware that someone was slumped on the floor at the other side of his bed. Once he’d relieved himself he stripped off his clothes and stepped into the shower.
Sky stirred slightly. She could hear something. One of her eyes was swollen shut and she couldn’t open her mouth because her jaw was broken. Trying to get up, she put her weight on her hands and screamed. Her wand hand was broken too. How she had held onto it didn’t occur to her, all she knew right now was the pain.
From the shower, Severus heard a noise. It was muffled because of the water raining down on his head, but he definitely heard something.
Not even bothering to turn off the spray, he stepped out of the cubicle and took his wand from the shelf before making his way silently to the door.
He left the door connecting his bedroom and bathroom open and cautiously peered round. His eyes scanned every corner of the room. He knew every shadow in this room and nothing seemed out of place.
Inching his way in, he moved with cat-like stealth until he reached the bottom of the bed. From the corner of his eye, he saw something move on the floor beside his bed and trained his wand in the direction of the movement.
“Stand up slowly and you just may live. Make any sudden moves and I shall not hesitate to kill you.” His voice was low and deadly.
The toe of a boot and a flash of red Death Eater robe moved into his line of vision and he heard a small whimper. With lightning quick reflexes, he leaped forward, grabbed the intruder and flung them hard against the wall with a sickening crack. The red robe fell to the floor and stilled.
Still cautious Severus flicked his wand and the robe lifted to reveal a half naked and seriously injured Sky. For a moment, he just stared at her, unable to believe what he was seeing. Then he saw the side of her face, the state of her hand all smashed and bloody, and the slow pool of blood that was forming beside her head where it hit the wall when he had thrown her and he was spurred into action.
Accio’ing a towel from the bathroom, he tenderly lifted her head to place the towel underneath, then lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed, laying her down carefully.
“O Gods, Sky, what have I done?”
Rolling her onto her side gently, Severus parted her hair so he could see exactly from where the blood was coming. As soon as he found the large gash, he sealed it with his wand. Propping pillows in front and behind her to keep her on her side, he dashed into the bathroom. Pulling open the bathroom cupboard, his hands fell immediately on the bottles he required and he dashed back into the bedroom. Sky was deathly white and the stone around her neck gave off a weak, pale white/blue light. Something wasn’t right. He healed her head and stopped the bleeding. He knew her jaw and hand were broken but they did not account for the pallor of her skin or the fact that her normally rose coloured lips were now as white as her skin. Running his fingers carefully over her head where he had sealed the wound, he found the area abnormally swollen.
“Shit.” He muttered.
She was haemorrhaging internally. Picking up his wand once more, he reopened the gash and was rewarded with a spray of blood to his face and chest. Once more, he ran to the bathroom and retrieved another bottle. It was not ideal for what he needed to do, but if he did not act quickly, she would die. Taking an eye dropper, he drew up a small amount of the clear fluid and replaced the stopper. Moving up the bed, he placed her head between his knees to hold her steady and squeezed one drop of the liquid into the wound.
Sky began to convulse as the drop of liquid sizzled on the blood vessels that hadn’t yet healed. His knees gripped her head tightly. He couldn’t allow her to move her head one fraction for fear the solution would drip into an uninjured part of her skull and cause further damage. The flow of blood ceased and he placed the dropper on the bedside cupboard before once more sealing the wound. He relaxed a little as her lips started to take on a bit of colour and moved himself from his cramped position.
Severus treated her facial wounds, her broken jaw and, he discovered, a broken cheekbone. He followed with the damaged hand and then proceeded to feed her an array of potions.
By the time he was finished, Sky had colour back in her cheeks, not a lot but enough to convince him that she would be okay. Severus added a sleeping potion when he was feeding her the others and now she was sleeping soundly.
Letting out a large sigh of relief, he tucked her into his bed, cleared everything up and went back into the shower. Once he washed away Sky’s blood, he dried and went back to the bedroom. He slipped into a pair of clean boxers and checked on the woman asleep in his bed.
He was not surprised to find the elf’s had already been and replaced the bedding.
He decided she was a woman now, not a girl any more. She told him she was eighteen. As far as he was concerned that made her a woman. It also meant she was sixteen and a half when he first found her as a bundle of rags.
Laying beside her and studying her, he also decided that she was quite beautiful. Her hair was thick and long and felt like silk when he held it in his fingers. Her lips were full round a not too wide mouth. Lifting the sheet, he saw she had filled out nicely. He breasts were large and firm, the nipples a rosy pink. She had a tiny waist, a slight curve to her stomach and her hips flared just the way he liked. His boxers were seriously tented by now.
‘Bloody hell what am I doing?’ He lowered the sheet and strode through the door to his office, grabbed the bottle of firewiskey and settled into his chair. A wave of his wand and the fire was once more blazing.
As he sipped at his drink, questions once more came into his mind. ‘What exactly happened tonight?’ Knowing there was only one way to find out, he moved back into the bedroom. Sitting on the bed next to Sky, he pointed his wand at her and whispered a spell that would open her eyes but not wake her. As soon as they opened, he whispered; “Legilimens.”
It was the first time he had seen where she lived and he was surprised at the sheer size of the room where she slept. It was twice the size of his own rooms. He caught a brief glimpse of the living room and a startled portrait as she ran to a door and stepped through to the Dark Lord’s domain.
‘Bugger.’ He thought. ‘How had she done that?’
Seeing himself on the ground like that was a blow to his pride, especially as he needed to be rescued by Sky. But he would have died this night, for certain, had she not. When he saw what they did to her, he was furious. ‘How dare they?’ Then he remembered that he had done much the same to her himself, and hated the vague feeling of guilt that went along with those memories.
He saw the agony on her face when she brought him back here and healed him, making sure he was alright, putting his needs before her own. Then a blurred image of her crawling up the bed and tumbling sideways to fall on the floor before she blacked out. She had been right; not a day passed during the summer when he did not tell her in some way how loathsome and abhorrent she was to him. He could never stress enough what a burden she was. And he abused her physically and sexually too.
Now, Severus regretted what he had done to her. Shame flooded his face at the thought of how she must have felt. Delving deeper into her mind, he went back to that summer when he found her.
The terror and confusion, the desperate desire to please him and make him not want to hurt or hate her almost tore him in two. Coming to the memory of him blowing bubbles for her when he was drunk; he felt her brief pleasure that he was being nice to her. Then the feeling of warmth she’d had just before he threw her to the floor, and she not understanding what she had done wrong, but blaming herself anyway.
Severus saw and felt her hope and happiness as she sat on the stool waiting to be sorted. Her terror again as she watched his fists in the anteroom after the hat refused to sort her. When he dragged her to the gates and ruthlessly threw her out, she pleaded with him. Begged him to beat the badness from her so she could come back in and have a family, someone to care about her. He walked away. When he discovered that she’d stood there all night and through the next day, he pulled out, unable to continue.
Severus Snape had not cried since he was a small child, but as he lay on the bed beside her, the tears rolled silently down his cheeks. They continued to do so as he fell asleep. When he woke next morning she was gone.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sky opened her eyes and closed them again quickly. The pain in her head intensifying as a narrow shaft of sunlight hit her square in the eyes.
She let out a small groan and felt movement at the side of her. The mattress dipped and she forced herself to open her eyes again
Turning her head slowly to the left, she could see a lump under the covers, her covers, no, not her covers, not her bed, not her room.
She turned her head more and saw the shock of black hair peeping out the top of the duvet.
When Sky groaned, Severus stirred enough to roll onto his side and snuggle further under the covers, but he stayed asleep. Realizing where she was and with whom, she carefully edged her way off the edge of the bed, letting herself sink down to her knees on the floor. Every movement she made cause pain to shoot through her head. But she couldn’t stay here. ‘Why was she here? In his bed? Oh Gods. Have to get away.’
Looking down she realised she was naked and flashes of remembrance from last night started coming back to her. As she crawled past the bottom of the bed, Sky saw the robe and boots she’d been wearing when she brought Sir back. She looked up at the bed; he was still asleep so she grabbed the robe, pulled it over her shoulders and grabbed her boots. Taking one more look at his face, she stood and unsteadily made her way to the door, opening and closing it quietly.
“About time too, young Lady.”
“Where on earth have you been?”
“We have been waiting up all night to find out what was going on.”
“And where are your clothes?”
All the founders were waiting, firing questions at her like there was no tomorrow when all she wanted to do was go to her own bed, lie down and close her eyes.
“Please. Not now. Head hurts. Later.”
She walked unsteadily in the direction of the bedroom.
“Oh no you don’t. You will stay here and explain to all of us exactly where you have been. And what you have been doing.”
Sal spoke with an authority Sky never heard him use before and she instinctively turned to him.
“Sal I’m sorry. I … I didn’t meant to worry you. Any of you. It’s just that my head hurts so much.”
“That’s as may be, but we still demand an explanation. So sit down and start explaining.”
Knowing they would not let up until she did, Sky sat down and told them everything she could remember up until crawling onto the Potion Master’s bed.
“Then I woke up and I was in his bed.” She told them, ashamed now because it sounded so bad. “He … he was asleep. I snuck out.”
Rowena called her to stand close to her portrait and spoke quietly to her.
“Did he touch you dear?”
Sky face burned at the question. “Err, I don’t think so.”
“But you don’t know for sure do you?”
She shook her head and wished she hadn’t. It hurt. ‘How could she know? How was she supposed to tell if he did anything or not?’
“I suggest you go take a bath. You will have to examine yourself.”
While Sky’s face burned an even deeper red, Rowena explained how to examine herself to see if the Potion Master had taken advantage of her.
Sky never touched down there before except to clean herself. Even alone in the bath, she felt embarrassed. But she discovered it felt kind of nice too. Tingly, like when Sir touched her sometimes. But she discovered she was still intact and breathed a sigh of relief.
Sky had a good supply of healing potions thank to Sal’s expert tutelage and took a combined headache/ healing potion that made her feel much better. When she returned to the living room, Rowena was there alone.
“Well? Did he … you know?”
Sky shook her head, much to the relief of Rowena. “Well that is good news. You know you can find out for sure what did happen last night.”
“How?”
“The mirror of course. Bring his image forth as you have before.”
Sky stood at the mirror and the image of Sir appeared in the glass.
He was in the classroom marking parchments as the students sat scribbling furiously. Every so often his eyes would scan the room, checking they were all working hard.
“Now aim your wand at his head, concentrate on the moment you climbed on the bed with him and say ‘Legilimens’.” Rowena told her.
Sky did and was amazed when in her head she saw herself on the bed beside him. But it was weird too because it was like her own memory was combining with his. It was only toward the end she realised that he’d done this same thing to her last night.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Severus had not been surprised to find her gone. But he had been disappointed. He wanted to talk to her. Persuade her to stay if he could. Try to discover why she helped him after the way he treated her.
He also wondered how the hell he was going to explain this to Albus. When the Headmaster found out that Sky had been here, in Severus’ rooms and unconscious and left again, he would go spare.
Having decided to leave the telling until after dinner this evening, he sat taking his morning class of second year dunderheads. He needed time to think about what he would say to the Headmaster so had given them an essay to write so he would not have the hassle of watching them botch up potions and melt cauldrons.
As soon as he felt someone entering his mind, his first instinct was to block them. But even a superb Occlumens such as he was unable to prevent the intrusion. Knowing it would be impossible for one of his students to be the culprit, he scanned his eyes over them anyway. But every one of them had their noses buried in their work. So who was prying into his mind? There was no one else here. The intrusion didn’t last long, but he was put out that someone had slipped in and out so easily and he had not been able to do a thing about it, and whoever it was, certainly was not even in the room with him. It should have been impossible.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sky felt him try to resist her. Try to block her, push her out of his mind. But it was too easy for her. Sky never dreamt she could do something like this. Had it not been for the fact she discovered he did the same to her last night without her knowing she would have felt guilty. But he had, so she didn’t.
Sky finally finished her time with Rowena and once more it was time for her to step out of the door. Still wearing the same clothes she first arrived in, only this time she used her wand to make them fit, Sky said a sad goodbye to Rowena and left.
It was February and the ground was frozen and slippery. Still, she wasn’t surprised to find Sir and the Headmaster waiting for her the moment she closed the door and emerged from the overhang of wall.
But Sky had confidence now. She knew how to use her magic. She still held a certain amount of fear for the Potions Master, but not as much as she had. He proved that he no longer intended to harm her. In fact ,Sky thought he didn’t hate her as much as he once did.
“Sir, Headmaster, I take it you’re here to see me, though why I don’t know. “
Severus was surprised by her new found confidence and raised an eyebrow. She had not even stuttered over her words. Albus spoke first.
“Indeed we are Sky. We are hoping to persuade you to return to Hogwarts.”
“I’m sure you are. I don’t know why though. I think your parting words were something along the lines of; ‘Decidedly evil. The sorting hat is never wrong. Never return.’ That’s what you told me. Do you know what that did to me? Do you? How much it hurt? How frightened and confused I was?”
“I can only imagine.” Albus told her sadly.
“Can you? I don’t think so. For weeks I was told I wasn’t wanted. How loathsome I was. Then I was told I could stay, be sorted, have a family. Then, because of a tatty hat you rejected me. Threw me out without a second thought. I didn’t understand why you did that. I still don’t. No, I don’t think you can imagine it at all.”
Severus was taken aback when she told the Headmaster how he made her feel during the summer. He’d never told Albus and now he did not know what to do.
“Sky.” I should never have said those things to you. It was wrong of me.”
It was difficult for Severus to admit when he was wrong, and doing so now made him very uncomfortable. But he had to say it. He needed to let her know he was sorry. He just did not know how. Sorry was not a word in his vocabulary.
“At least come to the castle and talk. No one will make you stay. In fact I doubt anyone could. You are rather adept at disappearing when you choose to do so.”
“Why? Why do you want to talk to me? So you can both tell me what a foul, loathsome, stupid little girl I am? You think I don’t know it already? It was drilled into my brain for long enough.”
Albus watched her over his half moon glasses. There was no twinkle in his eyes; only regret for the part he played in making this poor girl think that everyone disliked her so much.
“Sky, you are none of those things. I … we should never have treat you so shoddily; cast you out so carelessly. It was so very wrong how we treated you. I am deeply sorry. Please, at least consider coming back. We have your room prepared. At least do like Severus asks, come back and talk.”
“No. I have my time to do with Godric.”
“We can teach you. Anything you want to learn we can help you with.”
“No. I want to stay here. They’ve looked after me. Shown me what it’s like to have someone care about me. They’ve taught me things. Lots of things. They don’t shout at me. Don’t hurt me. Show Sky kindness. Good to Sky. Sky wanted.”
Severus knew she was upset now. She was beginning to stutter her words.
“I think Headmaster that she is not ready. Maybe at a later date.”
“No Severus. We need her now. She must come back with us.”
“Sky not go. Sky stay here. Safe.”
The moment sky finished speaking she turned and re-entered the wall, leaving two astounded men staring at a blank wall.
“That went well, Albus.”
The Headmaster glared at Severus and headed back to Hogwarts without a word. Sky entered the living room furious.
“Not right. Stay here.” She fumed as she waved her wand in a wide arc and cleaned the room. All the way through she chuntered about the Headmaster and Sir as she cleaned.
Godric sat on the chair in his portrait, a huge grin on his face as he discovered for himself what a fiery creature she’d turned out to be. The fact that her words were broken amused him. He liked it. When Sky stormed in from the kitchen she threw herself onto the deep red couch with a huff.
“Quite finished. Or would you like to hex something?”
She scowled at him and pouted. “Not fair. No right ask Sky. They not know how Sky feel. Not care. Not go back. Ever.”
“Well I might agree with you if I knew what you were talking about. Want to share?”
“No.” She folded her arms and huffed. “Sir and Headmaster. They wait for Sky. Ask me go back Hogwarts. Sky say no. Want talk they tell me. Huh!”
“Perhaps you should have listened to what they had to say.”
“Why? So they tell me I bad? They throw Sky out. Say not wanted. Not go back there.”
“Sky listen to me. You’re upset. That much I do understand. Go get a cup of tea or something and let yourself calm down. Then we’ll talk.”
“Don’t want tea. Want nothing.”
“So you prefer to sit there and sulk all day? Go on. Tea. Now.”
She stomped into the kitchen, grumping about Godric now as well as Sir and the Headmaster. Godric sat patiently in his frame, listening as her gripes slowly quieted while she clattered about the kitchen then sat and drank her tea. Fifteen minutes later, she returned shame face and head hung.
“I’m sorry Sir. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”
“I think I’ll survive one little temper tantrum.”
She looked at him aghast. “Tantrum?” I did not …”
“Yes you did young lady. But enough. Now, no one is going to force you to go up to the school so forget about it. I am here to teach you. So teach you I will. Defence against the Dark Arts. Transfiguration. Charms. They will be our main subjects. Are you ready to proceed?”
She nodded her head and Godric told her to bring the books from the shelf. Time seemed to fly with Godric at the helm. Like the others, he was a master at what he taught. But he also had a great sense of humour and would often have Sky laughing when she didn’t even know why she was laughing. But when it neared the end of August, Sky stopped laughing any more. They had taught her all they could and her time with them was coming to an end. Several more times, she healed Sir, though she never had to return to meet Voldemort again. Sky grew to care very much about Sir over the months. She didn’t want to care for him, and did her best to fight it. But each time she walked away from him, it got harder and harder. Sometimes, he would plead with her to stay with him, just until morning. He would not try to force her to stay or talk if she did not wish to do so, just stay and be near to him.
“Why will you not stay with me?” He asked her one night. “I promise I will not try and harm you.”
Sky didn’t answer. She didn’t know how to tell him how she felt. But, she had an idea how to maybe make him understand.
“Why so sad, kitten?” This was Godric’s pet name for her. He always said she tumbled about like a playful kitten when she was avoiding hexes and curses during her training.
“I only have a week and then you’ll go. What do I do then Godric? I have nowhere to go.”
“Ah kitten, you will be fine. There will always be a place for you here. But I strongly recommend that you go and speak with the Headmaster. Also the Potions Master, Professor Snape. He needs your help, Sky. They all do.”
“My help. With what? I heal Sir. What more can I do?”
“There is much that you can and must do, Sky, for the sake of the wizarding world. Things only you can do. You must listen to them. They know what they did to you was wrong. Think about it Sky. Give them a chance, like we gave you.”
That night, Sky put her plan into action. She knew they would be waiting for her tomorrow when she left the wall. She only hoped that this would work. Make Sir understand why she didn’t trust him.
Removing the lid from a small bowl on her dresser, she dipped her wand inside and removed a pink strand. She twirled it round her wand and carried to the mirror. Bringing up the image of Sir, she aimed her wand in his direction and said; mitto.
I send
The pink strand left her wand and entered the mirror. She watched as it floated towards the Potions Master where he sat at his study desk.
Severus raised his eyes to see something pink heading in his direction. He jumped up from his seat, aiming his wand at the thing as he moved round the desk away from it. It followed him and began to twist and writhe in mid air. To Severus, it looked like a memory from a pensive but it was the wrong colour and memories could not follow a person about like this. Wherever he moved, to the pink thing followed him, hovering just in front of his face.
“What the bloody hell is this?” He touched it tentatively with the tip of his wand and it spread out, creating a rectangle, and inside he could see an image of Sky. Not an image that showed her watching him now but one of her stood in front of him as he shouted at her. Then it started to play a tune and lyrics were coming from the image.
(a/n Email; ccino49@yahoo.co.uk for link to this song.)
I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Because my heart holds so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I’ve learned the hard way
To never let it get that far
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
I lose my way
And it’s not long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that’s weakness in your eyes
I’m forced to fake
A smile, a laugh every day of my life
My heart can’t possibly break
When it wasn’t even whole to start with
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should’ve know better then to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your own pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damned thing
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
Because of you
Because of you
(Because of You. Kelly Clarkson)
When the song finished Sky’s image disappeared and the pink stream shot away and back into Sky’s bowl. Severus had no idea where it went. But the song stuck in his head, almost infuriatingly so. All through the night, it played itself out in his head and all he could see was her image.
