CH 12 It’s a no win situation
He moved through the back of the shop and Lou turned to look at Severus again.
“Big party, lots of friends. Pah.” She whispered. “As if?”
Lou had never had a birthday party of her own, she was never at one place long enough. She’d been to a couple though, at least she’d attended the parties of other kids that lived in the same foster house as her. They were usually the real kids of the foster parents. Once, while she was in a foster home, there was a Christmas party for the neighbours kids and all their friends, they all got a present. Lou got a colouring book, crayons and a doll. She loved that doll, but the head fell of a week later and she never found it. She kept the headless doll for a further two weeks, but eventually that disappeared too. Lou had no idea her foster mum had thrown it in the bin, she was five and thought her dolly had run away and left her. She was heartbroken for all of two days.
When she was eight, and spending Christmas with another foster family, a neighbour passed on a used dolls pram and a couple of old dolls to go with it. Lou used the pram as a cart to ride down the street in, it wasn’t long before the pram was wrecked. She had sore knees when she was made to prey for ages because she was ungrateful.
Lou was brought out of her musings when Mr Ollivander returned with several long boxes.
“Now, let’s see what you can do with these.” he told her. Opening a box, he removed a wand and passed it to her.
Lou took the wand and jiggled it, not sure what she should do with it.
The man told her to point at something and she pointed it at a vase on the end of the counter. “Nothings happening.” She told him.
“It might help is you were to try a spell.” he said.
“I don’t know any.”
“What, none at all? How old are you?”
“Fifteen.”
“How can you not know any spells at fifteen? It is …”
Severus interrupted him. “She has been somewhat overlooked by our kind Mr Ollivander. This will be her first wand.”
“I see.” Said the man who was starting to give Lou the creeps. He had the weirdest eyes she’d ever seen. They were silver and she’d never heard of anyone having silver eyes before.
After trying about fifteen different wands and getting no results, Severus could have kicked himself.
“Please accept my apologies Mr Ollivander, the girl is harnessed and I did not adjust the collar.”
Lou turned crimson when he said that, he’d actually told someone why she wore a collar and she felt humiliated.
Mr Ollivander tutted, but otherwise made no remark, just watched Lou intently with those piercing silver eyes as the Professor placed his wand to the collar and said words Lou didn’t understand.
She did however feel the powerful magic that was suddenly released. Her hair stood on end as she crackled and sparked. The two men were both pushed back with the force of energy that radiated from her.
“Professor Snape, make it stop.” She cried.
“Concentrate Louhi, as you did before. Close your mind to everything but controlling your magic. Take control.” He roared at her.
Lou closed her eyes tight and held her breath as she tried to make it all stop. She breathed deep and told herself she was in control, that she wanted it to stop. A few minutes later they all breathed a sigh of relief.
“I was not expecting you to release all of her power at once, Professor.” Mr Ollivander admonished.
“I did not, that is merely a trace element of her potential Mr Ollivander.”
“Curious, very curious.” The man stated.
Lou was wide eyed, expecting to be told off at any moment. Amazingly, she wasn’t.
“Let’s start again shall we.” The silver eye’s man suggested.
Lou went through all the wands again and nothing much happened.
When Mr Ollivander brought several more, Severus watched closely as Lou tried three different wands, two of them gave off sparks, like the one she’d taken from the bad man when she saved Severus’ life, one seemed to send out a wish wash of drab colours that swirled around a bit and fizzled out. The fifth also gave off sparks and the sixth and seventh did the wishy washy colours.
“Holly, pinewood handle and a most unusual core Miss Black. The only one I have ever had in my possession, and I know of no other.”
“Prey tell Mr Ollivander, I am most curious.” Severus stood to look at the wand.
“Tail hair of the black unicorn Professor.”
“But I though the black unicorn was a myth, a child’s storybook tale.”
“Indeed Professor, then perhaps you could explain to me why it’s hair now resides inside this wand? However, it may not suit, take it young lady, let us discover whether or not the wand chooses you.”
Lou thought the old man was definitely barmy. Bobby said there were unicorns, but he said they were white, not black.
Mr Ollivander held out the wand and Lou, who was fed up by now and not expecting anything to happen, took hold of the wand. As when Severus unharnessed some of her powers, she started giving of magical energy, the wand however seemed to feed on that energy and a huge bolt of lightening shot from it’s tip and totally demolished the back of the shop in a burst of flames.
“OH SHIT.” Lou screamed, throwing the wand to the floor and backing out of the shop. She got as far as the door and lurched forward into Severus, grabbing his robes to stop herself from falling. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do it, it just happened.” She told him desperately. “What do I do now? That mans gonna be sooo mad with me.”
“Not at all Miss Black. The damage can be repaired, and the wand appears to have found it’s mate. However, it is not advisable to throw it on the ground as you did. I shall give you a book on wand care, a well maintained wand should last a lifetime.”
“I …I’m really sorry about your shop Mr Ollivander.”
Severus stood beside the old man, and between them they repaired the wall, the shelves, and replaced most of the wands. Quite a few were beyond repair but Mr Ollivander said he did not hold her responsible for them.
Lou was relieved, she didn’t know how much a wand cost, but she doubted the thirty quid plus change she had in her pocket would cover all those wands.
Severus placed his wand against her collar and rearrested her magic while Lou stood and let him, relieved to have it gone.
“Am I in trouble when we get back?” She asked Severus.
“No, not on this occasion. I shall also overlook the curse, seeing as how you received something of a fright.”
“Curse?”
“You swore, rather loudly when you demolished the shop. I assume it was involuntary?”
“Yeah. I didn’t know I did.”
“Very well then, take your wand, and happy birthday.” He gave her the briefest of smiles as he passed her the box that contained her wand.
Lou stared at him. ‘Did he just wish her happy birthday?’ “Thank you, for the wand, and the happy birthday.” She told him with a big smile.
She waited while he paid Mr Ollivander and they left the shop. “I meant it you know.”
“Meant what?” He asked her.
“When I said thank you. I never got a birthday present before, I was always in between homes or out on my own, so I used to miss out. This means a lot to me.”
Severus looked down at her, wondering if she was being facetious, but she had a sparkle in her eyes, and a look of such warmth that he was taken aback. “You are welcome Louhi. Do take care of it wont you, as Mr Ollivander has stated, it contains a very unusual core.”
“I will, I promise. I …I’m just not sure if I’ll be safe to use it, not after what happened in there. I might kill someone.”
“That is unlikely. I think however it might be advisable to take you back to Hogwarts, there is more room for errors then where we are currently residing. I do not know about you, but I would like a drink.”
“Yeah, me too, are we going back to that pub?”
“If you are referring to the Leaky Cauldron, no. I was thinking more in the line of Fortesque’s ice cream parlour. Call it a birthday treat.”
“Really? Yeah that’d be great. You know your alright you, I mean I know you don’t like me, but your still being nice even though you don’t have to be.”
Severus wondered whether that was a complement or an insult. Unable to make up his mind, he decided on complement, he did not receive too many of those. He did not correct her when she said he didn’t like her though, even though he did, a little bit.
He ordered himself a coffee and for Lou, the biggest ice cream she’d ever seen. It even had a sparkler sticking out the top, and the man who brought it told her happy birthday.
Severus requested the sparkler especially, he could not imagine a child never having been told happy birthday, never mind not receiving a present. He felt rather magnanimous when her face lit up once again as the ice cream appeared in front of her.
“Hey thanks, I’ve never seen so much ice cream in one go, do you want to share, there’s loads?”
“No, thank you, coffee is sufficient for my needs.”
“She told him what each of the flavours were as she came to them, there were a few she didn’t recognise and one that she didn’t like at all, it was sour and made her scrunch her face up and shudder when she put it in her mouth.
Severus snorted back a chuckle when she did this, the look on her face was priceless.
Oh that was sour, you wanna try a bit?”
“Most definitely not, I saw what it did to you and that was bad enough.”
Lou only got halfway through the ice cream and started to feel sick. “Can I leave it? I think I might be sick if I eat any more.”
“By all means, I would prefer you held onto the contents of your stomach, at least while you are in my presence.”
“Are there any cheap second hand clothes shops round here? I’ve got some money and I’d like to get something a bit less scruffy to wear. If that’s alright.”
“Providing you do not spend hours searching through shop after shop, but I refuse to go into a hand-me-down store. Madam Malkin’s is the best for robes.”
“Is it expensive, it sounds expensive. I’ve only got thirty quid.”
“I believe she has a bargain rail, you should be able to find something there to suit. I thought you preferred the clothing you already have?”
“I just want to look a bit …you know …so you wont be so ashamed to be seen with me.”
Lou stayed close as they made their way further into Diagon Alley. When they entered Madam Malkin’s Lou wasn’t too happy. There weren’t any normal clothes. At least none she would call normal.
Severus spied the reduced rail and led her over to look.
“They’re a bit odd, not the sort of thing I’m looking for.” She whispered so the shopkeeper wouldn’t hear. “Is there a shop with normal clothes?”
“These are witches robes, you are a witch are you not?”
“I suppose so but …“
“Then they are normal, and certainly more appropriate than your current attire.”
“Oh.” Lou looked glumly through the garments hanging on the rack, they were horrible as far as she was concerned. Long shapeless dresses that were not to her taste at all.
When Lou saw the shopkeeper heading in her direction she was dismayed, especially when Severus told the woman that Lou need a complete new wardrobe.
“No I don’t, I just need some new trousers and t shirts.” She said, panicked.
Despite her protests, she was hauled through the back of the shop, closely followed by Severus, and made to stand on a small stool as the woman took her measurements.
“Honest, I don’t need much,.” She leaned closer to the woman. “I haven’t got much money.” She said quietly. “I can’t afford much, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry dear, we are very accommodating here at Madam Malkin’s. Now step into the changing room, I’ll bring you a few things to try on.”
Next thing she knew, she was bustled into a cubicle and several robes were thrust into her arms.
Lou tried them on, mainly to keep the woman happy, but she kept her clothes on and put the robes over the top, regardless of Madam’s insistence that the robes did not hand correctly over her muggle attire.
After being forced to try on robe after robe, Lou lost her temper. “Look, I’ve told you, I can’t afford these and I don’t want robes. I like trousers, not dresses, trousers. If you haven’t got any then thanks but no thanks, I’m leaving.”
Severus, who out of necessity of the proximity band was just outside of the cubicle, heard her tirade and pulled the curtain open. “That is enough. Apologise at once.”
Lou stared gobsmacked at him. She’d forgotten about the band and didn’t know he was standing outside the changing room.
“Okay, I’m very sorry, but I still can’t afford the blasted robes and she won’t listen to me. Will you please tell her, she’ll listen to you.”
Severus took her by the arm and led her back into the main area of the shop, plonking her on a chair by the counter. He turned his back on her and spoke in quiet tones to the shopkeeper.
Lou sat quietly, hoping the woman would listen to him. She must have done because a few minutes later he told Lou they were leaving and she followed him out of the shop.
“Phew, I’m glad you told her, she wasn’t taking any notice of me.”
“That is because she was following explicit instructions from me, whereas you were rude and obnoxious to the witch.”
“I was what? I wasn’t, I tried to tell her, I really did, but she wouldn’t listen. Are you falling out with me again? It’s not fair, I didn’t mean to be rude.”
“No, I am not …falling out as you put it, but I am extremely annoyed.”
Lou didn’t understand what he had to be annoyed about. She’d told the woman what she did and didn’t want and she didn’t listen. Yet when Lou said she’d had enough, he got angry with her.
“I can’t win can I? It doesn’t matter what I do or say, I end up in the wrong. I wish we’d never gone in that blasted shop. I only wanted something nice to wear so you wouldn‘t be so ashamed to be seen with me.”
He glared at her and Lou looked away. “And blasted isn’t a swearword, just so you know.”
He took her back to the Leaky Cauldron, but instead of staying for the promised supper, he Apparated them back to the green and led her back to the house.
The second they were in the door, he snapped the cuff on her leg and removed the proximity chain, before stalking through to the kitchen. Fed up, she went as far as the stairs and sat down on the third step. It was a place she always felt comfortable, the third step. Wherever she was living, the third step just felt right when she was upset or she was hurting inside.
Severus made some lunch and when he looked in the drawing room twenty minutes later to collect her, she wasn’t there. He was about to invoke the location band when he turned he saw her asleep on the stairs. Why she was on the stairs when she could be sitting comfortably in the drawing room, he had no idea, but he picked her up and carried her through to the sofa.
Lou woke as he set her down. “Oo. What’s up?”
“You were asleep on the stairs, why I do not know. Lunch is ready, I shall bring it through.”
“No it’s alright, I’ll come in the kitchen. I didn’t mean to fall asleep.” She stood and limped after him. “My leg aches.”
“Here.” He placed a phial on the table in front of her and she drank it. “Thanks, it feels a bit better now. Are you still mad at me?”
“A little, you have to learn to control your temper Louhi, as well as learn some manners.”
“I do know my manners, that woman just got me mad.”
“Nevertheless, you were rude to her. It is not acceptable.”
“No, well I wont do it again, and I wont be going back there again either.”
“Actualy you will.”
“I wont.”
“You will, your Hogwarts robes will be purchased there.”
“My what?”
“Hogwarts robes. You will need them ready for the new term.”
“What, that castle school? You said you wouldn’t leave me there, you said I was only going to get tested, you said I …”
He slammed his hand down on the table and Lou pushed her chair back and stood up, ready to flee.
“Don’t you …don’t you dare.” She told him, edging her way to the door.
Severus stood, his eyes hard as he looked at her. “Sit down, I am not going to touch you, but you will listen and you shall be going to school whether you like it or not.”
“I’m not, I don’t need to. I hate school, especially that one, it’s too big and I’m not going. You can’t make me.”
“Oh but I can. Now sit and eat your lunch before I lose my temper.”
“I’m not hungry anymore, I want to go to bed, I’m tired.”
“Louhi, you are trying my patience, either you do as you are told or, I shall issue the punishment you are still owed, and then some. Believe me, I shall do it.”
Lou moved back to her chair reluctantly, she’d pushed him too far again. They’d been doing okay until Madam Malkin’s, now everything was spoiled.
They sat and ate lunch in silence, Severus feeling extremely annoyed, Lou feeling sorry for herself, and sorry for getting him angry.
“I need to take a look at your leg. Have Moon help you take a bath and I shall come and see to it when you are done.”
Without another word, he scooped her up, carried her up the stairs and left her on the landing.
Moon got her into the bath and started washing her hair for her. She knew the young miss was upset, though not why. “You is sad. Why?”
“Because I’m an idiot Moon, that’s why. The Professor got me my first ever birthday present today, and a great big ice cream with a sparkler. He even told me happy birthday, no one ever did that before. It was almost like we were …friends or something.”
“So why is it making you sad?”
“Because I spoilt it all, I got annoyed with the woman in the clothes shop and was rude to her. I didn’t get any clothes and we had a row. Now he’s mad as hell at me and he’s sending me away to school where I don’t know anyone. I’m a witch and I don’t want to be, I’ve got magic that I can’t control and I have to wear a collar to stop me from blowing everyone up. I’m useless. Plus he says he owes me a spanking because I kept swearing, and I’ve tried really hard not to do it Moon. I’ve been good for ages and he never even noticed. I still have to wear these things on my ankles too, he doesn’t trust me and that’s the worst thing, that and the fact that he doesn’t like me at all. That’s why I’m sad. I want to get out now, he’s gonna look at my leg. I wonder if those bad blokes have given up chasing him yet. If they have and my legs almost healed, I can leave here and he wont have to bother about me any more. Maybe Mr Key will give me my job back. There’s got to be another house I can hole up in, somewhere away from Spinners End.”
Severus stood at her bedroom door listening, he’d been on his way up with the outfits delivered from Madam Malkin’s when he heard the elf ask why she was sad.
He snuck quietly into the room, deposited her new robes in the wardrobe and removed all of her shabby muggle clothes before sneaking out again.
