Sunday afternoon came sooner than either Lucius or James would’ve liked. They said their goodbyes, and James left for the Weasleys’. Since this was the first that anyone had seen him in person, he had a lot of explaining to do.
Most of the Weasley boys were too young to remember James, but Bill and Charlie remembered him well. They sat and listened to him as he explained everything, and they both started to see their ‘uncle’ a little differently than they did when they were kids.
Ron however, just found it exciting to be face to face with his best mate’s father. He had spent a little time with Mr. Potter on the train home, but the thrill hadn’t worn off just yet. “Are you really going to the World Cup with us?” he asked excitedly.
James nodded. “Yep, but I’m going to disguise myself a little.”
“He’s going to pretend to be with me,” Bill spoke up looking proud.
Ron found it a little odd, but didn’t say anything else on the subject. It was about that time that Molly was ushering him and Ginny to bed anyway. Ron didn’t think it was fair that he was being sent to bed during the summer like that, but he didn’t argue too much. He was too happy about Harry coming to stay with them.
James didn’t stay up too much longer after that. He hadn’t gotten much sleep during his stay at Malfoy Manor, and he was exhausted. He was put up with Bill and Charlie in their room and slept way past breakfast.
Time seemed to move slowly until it was time to go collect Harry. Originally, it was only supposed to be James and Arthur who went, but Fred, George, and Ron all decided that they wanted to go too.
Knowing his sons, Arthur asked James to check the twins over while he went to make sure the Dursleys were connected to the Floo network for the afternoon. James found a load of toffees in Fred’s pocket, but just rolled his eyes with a smile and said nothing.
“I like him,” Fred whispered to George as they moved to stand in front of the fireplace.
James went first, landing in a very cold and dark fireplace. Arthur was right behind, and crashed into him with a soft grunt. “What’s going on?” Arthur wondered aloud.
Before they could figure out what to do Fred appeared crashed into his father, closely followed by George. When Ron came through they were all squished tightly together. Then they heard Harry’s voice telling them that were in the right place, and that Vernon had walled up the fireplace. While Arthur tried to figure out what to do, James blasted through the wall. “Boom!” he cried out and giggled like a giddy child as debris flew everywhere.
“Well,” Arthur sighed as he stepped out into the living room, “that’s one way to do it.”
“My living room!” Petunia shrieked.
Arthur smiled and held out his hand. “Hello, you must be Harry’s aunt and uncle. I’m Arthur Weasley, and I’m sure you know James.”
The couple just stood and stared. “I wouldn’t expect much in the way of manners from these people,” James mumbled.
Harry, who was standing back in the corner, looked thrilled to see them. “Harry, where’s your trunk?” James asked.
“Upstairs in my room,” Harry answered.
The twins left to get it, leaving the rest of them in an uncomfortable silence. “So, how have they been treating you?” James asked his son.
Harry shrugged. “Same as usual I suppose.
James sighed, but made no move to turn the Dursleys into anything since Harry was alive and in one piece. He looked a little thin, but he didn’t have any marks on him or anything.
Arthur was trying to make conversation, but it wasn’t going well. James wasn’t surprised. He knew well how Vernon and Petunia felt about wizards, but he also knew that because of their past dealings with him they were too afraid to say or do anything. He had also heard something about an incident with Hagrid that had ended with their precious son acquiring a tail. That was probably why the very large brat now had his hands firmly on his own bottom.
Everyone seemed relieved when the boys came back with Harry’s trunk. Arthur ignited a fire in the fireplace, which he promised to put out before he cleaned up and left. Then he pulled a small sack from his robes and had everyone take a handful of floo powder from it. Ron went first, followed by George. Fred dragged Harry’s trunk, and the toffees he had in his pocket fell to the floor. James watched as he picked them all up but one, and also noticed that Dudley saw it.
Harry said a quick goodbye, but before he had left, Dudley had eaten the candy, and his tongue had swelled so much that it was hanging out of his mouth and was nearly down to the floor. Petunia started to panic, and Vernon was screaming and throwing knickknacks. Arthur did his best to calm them down and assured them that he could fix it. He looked to James for help, but James was rolling on the floor laughing his ass off.
Arthur ushered Harry through the fireplace and frowned at James while dodging objects still being thrown by Vernon. James took a few deep breaths and managed to calm himself, that is until he looked at Dudley again and started laughing harder.
“James,” Arthur chided him. “You’re an adult, please start acting like one.”
Eventually James was able to stop laughing, and he herded his ex in-laws to the kitchen while Arthur reversed the engorgement charm his sons had put on the toffee. He also cleaned up the living room while James stood in the kitchen and babysat the muggles so they wouldn’t interfere.
Once everything was back in order they went back to the Burrow. They popped into the kitchen where Harry was saying hello to everyone. “That wasn’t funny!” Arthur scolded his sons.
“Nope, it was hilarious!” James snickered.
Just then Molly came downstairs. The entire room instantly went quiet as Arthur started to tell her what had happened. Even though Harry desperately wanted to spend some time with his father, he was quickly ushered upstairs by Ron.
James went outside with Bill and Charlie to set up for dinner. They tried to ignore the yelling coming from inside the house as they set up two picnic tables in the garden. “So… what’s going on?” James asked as he spread out a table cloth.
“Fred and George want to start up a joke shop,” Bill answered. “Mum thinks they’re wasting their futures. This has been going on since Mum found some order forms for stuff they want to sell when they start school.”
“Ah,” James nodded. He had met Molly Weasley when Dumbledore had first formed the Order of the Phoenix. He knew her well, and wasn’t surprised by her response.
The yelling eventually stopped. Since it would probably be a few minutes before dinner would be ready, Charley challenged James to a sword fight. He summoned two wooden swords and handed one to his ‘uncle’.
“Been practicing?” James grinned evilly as he took the sword and bowed.
It turned out Charlie had, and was gave James quite a challenge. Fred and George came out to watch as the two swung and dodged. The other kids came out shortly as well. Harry watched in awe as his father did a back flip in the air to show off. “There’s so much I don’t know,” he mumbled, mostly to himself.
The duel lasted a good fifteen minutes, and ended with Charley on his knees. “I win!” James cried out and did a little victory dance. Then he helped Charley up and bowed. “You’ve gotten pretty good though.”
“Thanks,” Charlie blushed.
It seemed they had finished just in time because Molly called out for the men to come help her carry everything out. Harry arranged it so that he had his dad on one side of him, and Ron on the other.
He didn’t really get the chance to talk to his dad though. Everyone pretty much made small talk, mostly about quiddich since they were leaving early in the morning to go to the World Cup. Once they finished dessert the kids were ushered to bed. Harry was pleasantly surprised though when James patted him on the shoulder and bade him goodnight. He felt like he had won the lottery or something.

A/N: If all this sounded familiar, you’re not going crazy. I’m pretty much going through the events of the book, but rewriting them with James present. Right now I haven’t changed all that much, but I’m planning on bigger and better changes later. You’ll just have to keep reading to find out what they are.
