Okay, kids. I wanted to post this a couple hours ago and wish everyone who it was applicable to a Happy Mother's Day! But, I added a little more to it and so figure you'd forgive me for the delay. Now, this is a little side-story chapter, but I think you'll like it. It will be a bit more important later, but for now it's a little break for action, because the next chapter I have HUGE plans for, so I wanted a slight downfall in action.

Severus sat in his study, several sheets of parchment before him already filled with writing and another beneath his quill as he transcribed recipes from an ancient, crumbling text. He had salvaged the book from an estate sale from one of his old ‘colleagues,’ and had paid a fraction of what it was worth because the man’s daughter knew nothing of Potions.
He gave a smirk as he saw the title of the next potion. It was a scar-vanishing potion whose preparation was thought lost to the ages. He planned on using it to rid himself of the remnants of the Dark Lord that haunted him every time he looked in a mirror.
He started slightly at the knock on his door, and then his hand immediately went to his wand, drawing the slender piece of ebony from his sleeve. No one ever came to Spinner’s End. No one that could be trusted knew his address, and no one that he would invite knocked on his door. They always floo’d first, and then were invited in.
He approached the door cautiously, and tapped the wand against the peep hole. It expanded like a porthole, visible only to him, and allowed him to see who was outside.
A young woman stood on his porch, looking over her shoulder ever so often and gently rocking a bundle in her arms. She looked scared, and her eyes were smudged with dark circles that appeared to be caused by stress and lack of sleep. She looked up at the door and Severus was taken aback by the jewel blue color of her eyes.
“Severus Snape. I know you are in this house. I know you are at the door.” She said. Her voice was like a melody, lightly lilted by an accent he didn’t recognize. “Please answer. I don’t have much time.”
Severus tightened his grip on his wand, and then yanked open the door, leveling the magical instrument to aim straight between her eyes. She didn’t move, and merely looked up at him with those large, sapphire colored eyes.
“What is it you want?” he asked softly.
“I come with a request, Severus Snape.” She said. “Just over a year ago, I met a man trying to forget his troubles in the bottom of a bottle. He had seen horrors that would have broken others. He needed a release. And I, having just broken myself away from what could have been a terrible experience, was more than willing to oblige him. That man was you, Severus Snape. I didn’t, however, expect to be saddled with an extra burden.” She pulled back the cloth from the bundle in her arms, revealing a small infant.
The babe couldn’t be more than four months old, and had a cloud of black, wispy hair.
“What has this to do with me?” Severus asked, his mouth going dry. Here the woman’s large eyes filled with tears, and she pressed her cheek gently against the baby’s head.
“I can’t care for him anymore. They will locate me before the sun rises, and I will be dead. He isn’t their target, but they will end his life if he is caught with me.” She said.
“Who will end his life? What exactly is going on?” Severus asked, unable to take his eyes off of the sleeping baby in her arms.
“I am a Halfling in a clan of the Awakened.” She said. Severus’ gaze darted up and his wand, which had been slowly relaxing, came back up with a snap. She was a half vampire! The vampires did not like the term Undead, and so they preferred to see themselves as Awakened.
The young woman continued as if he hadn’t re-aimed his wand at her. “I was contracted by the Clan Master to wed another Halfling in another clan. It would bring prosperity to both our clans, and unite them as one. But the Halfling I was to marry is a violent man. My existence would have been horrible at best, and I didn’t want that. So I ran. This is a death sentence within the confines of a clan of the Awakened. The same day I ran I saw you in that bar. You were looking for release and so was I. I wanted a night of unattached passion. You were very good.” She commented. Severus felt his face heat ever so slightly from the forward compliment.
“I found out I was pregnant a few months later. I shouldn’t have been able to conceive, as most of the Awakened can’t. I was able to hide during most of the pregnancy, but when I finally gave birth I had to go to a hospital. They found me there, and I had to run only a day after bringing my son into this world. I’ve tried to escape them, but they always find me. I’m tired of running, and I cannot give him a life like this. So I brought him to you.” She finished. Severus was silent for several minutes, just staring between the woman and the baby.
“What makes you think I want a child?” he asked, becoming angry at the audacity this woman had.
“I didn’t want one either!” she snapped. The little boy murmured sleepily in her arms, dragging a chubby fist from under the cloak he was wrapped in and pressing it to his cheek. “I’m sorry! I am! Please take him, and if you truly don’t want him you can leave him at an orphanage. I just thought you might like the chance to have a son. He’s your heir. Please, Severus….if I bring him with me he will be killed. With you he could at least live.” She pleaded.
Severus was beginning to cave….with reluctance. “I know nothing of babies and child-rearing.” He argued weakly. “Besides…how can I even be sure the babe is mine? I don’t fancy being saddled with someone else’s progeny.” He frowned.
“I don’t have time to wait for you to do a Filial Potion. You can do it on your own time, and if you find he is not yours, you may drop him at the nearest orphanage. I wouldn’t waste your time if I didn’t know he was yours. Please…I don’t have much time left here. I need to get back to my flat. I’m going to wait for them there. I’m going to just let them have me. Death as a free woman means so much more than life as an abused whore.” She said, holding out the bundled infant.
At that moment the little boy opened his eyes, looking around with an intelligence that surpassed his few months. Severus saw the inky blackness of the boy’s eyes and knew he wouldn’t have to brew a potion. The poor lad looked just like his old baby photos his mother used to show him.
After several tense moments Severus reached forward and received the child, holding him as if he were made of glass.
“Here.” The woman said, and removed a bag from her shoulder. “I was much too stressed to be able to feed him naturally, so he can either take regular milk or formula. Formula is much easier on his tummy. There are packages of nappies and a change of clothes. I have a few books I picked up on raising a child. I didn’t know anything either…” she said, placing the bag on the ground.
“What’s his name?” Severus asked.
“I called him Nikolai. He has no surname yet. He should have been given my clan name, but if you wish you may give him yours.” She said softly. “He…he just ate an hour ago, so he doesn’t need to eat again for three hours. Keep him on a four hour schedule and he’s usually quite agreeable. He has only cried if he’s dirty, hungry, or has a tummy ache.” She said. She was stalling now and Severus knew it.
Tears spilled from her eyes and she laid her hand on the cloak wrapping little Nikolai. “Be good for your father, Nikolai.” She choked. She then turned on her heel and began to walk away. When she reached the end of his walkway, she turned to him once more. “There are a few of my effects in that bag in case he ever wants to know who his mother was. Good luck.” And she disappeared with a small pop.
Severus looked down at the little boy’s face. His eyes were open and he was looking up at Severus, those unfathomable eyes, very much like his own, unreadable and dark against his little pale face. He had Severus’ slightly arched eyebrows and thin facial structure, but he was lacking the prominent proboscis that had made Severus a laughing stock as a child.
The little boy wiggled his fist at his father and then yawned widely, showing off a set of pearly white fangs.
“Oh that’s just fucking fantastic…”

Lucius sat across from Severus, holding his reading glasses in one hand and a broken quill in the other. He couldn’t believe the story he’d just been told. Severus, with a son! It was an amazing, unbelievable, and hilarious revelation.
And so, he did what any good friend would do in this situation. He started to laugh. Severus looked so helpless sitting on his couch with the lad in his arms, wrapped in a woman’s cloak and fussing slightly.
“What’s so funny you arse-faced baboon?” Severus snapped. Lucius couldn’t draw the breath to speak for several moments.
“Weren’t….didn’t you think it was the funniest thing you’d heard when you found out I had a daughter? Well the tables are turned, you great flapping bat!” Lucius snickered.
Severus’ pale face turned red with humiliation.
“I came to you for help. I have no idea what to do about this. Your daughter is nearly at her majority. She can feed herself and take herself to the loo. She needs no help getting dressed. She can walk and talk and tell you if she needs something. I don’t know what to do with a baby! She made it seem like she’d be dead tomorrow and I felt a little bad for her, but now I’m not so sure I wasn’t just duped into taking an unwilling mother’s child. But if you don’t want to help me, Lucius, then say so.
I would think you would be a little more willing to help me considering I kept your son from being ruthlessly murdered for his inability to kill a dying old man.”
All the laughter vanished from Lucius’ face and he looked up at Severus, who had stood from the sofa.
“That old man was still Dumbledore, and probably cleverer than and just as slippery as the Dark Lord. The advantage he had was a whole soul and, though it could be debated, sanity. Draco paid for my mistakes, almost with his life. I’m sorry I appeared unfeeling to your plight, Severus.
I don’t know what to tell you. I didn’t spend much time around Draco until he was almost three. I don’t know any more about babies than you do. If you’d like, I can give you an elf for the job. I believe Mint has a daughter that is just about ready to begin serving, and would make an excellent nanny elf for him later as well.” Lucius said, looking sorry that he had hurt his friend’s feelings to the point Severus would bring up a time in his life where he’d walked the line of life and death so often he’d forgotten how to live.
“I don’t want my son raised by an elf.” Severus said quietly, sitting back down and looking at the boy’s face. He was looking around, by now having gone rather quiet. His dark eyes rested on his father’s face, and after a few moments of staring, he gave a little fanged grin. He stuck his fist in his mouth and began to gnaw happily on his fingers. “But I wouldn’t mind a bit of help.” He added.
“Mint!” Lucius called. The elf appeared with a pop, wringing her hands nervously and keeping her eyes low.
“Yes, Master?”
“Is your daughter ready to serve?” he inquired sharply.
“Mint’s little elfling is ready, Master. Would Master like Mint to bring her?” she asked, looking eager to show off her daughter. With a sharp nod from her Master she disappeared, and a few moments later she reappeared with another elf. The elfling was small with large blue eyes. Her ears were still too big for her head, and flopped rather comically when her head moved.
“Mint is presenting her daughter, to be named by Master at his pleasure.” The older elf said, pushing her daughter forward. Elves were named by their Masters, and if they changed hands they were often renamed, and had to get used to being called many things.
“Is this elf acceptable to you, Severus?” Lucius asked. The little elf turned to Severus, her ears perked up and her eyes sparkling.
“Can she take care of a child? She seems awfully small…” Severus said doubtfully.
“Oh, sir, I can takes care of little baby for sir! I can changes the nappies and burps the baby! I is small, but I is strong!” the elf squeaked excitedly.
“You’re sure you don’t mind parting with the elf?” Severus asked Lucius.
“Merely a token of my thanks for all you’ve done for my family. Since she’s a young, unnamed elf, you may claim her as your own and name her in one breath.” Lucius said. Severus stood from his seat and looked down at the elf.
“I, Severus Snape, claim you, elf, as my property and my servant. You are hereby to be called Julep, and will answer to my beck and call for as long as it pleases me.” He said. A swirl of magic began around his feet and the blue-eyed elf stepped forward.
“I, Julep, answer to my Master’s call for as long as it pleases him and will nots betray him or his family on the threat of death or freedom.” The elf answered, and a brief flash of magic bound the little elf to Severus.
“Julep?” Lucius asked curiously. Severus smirked.
“Mint and Julep.” He answered, causing Lucius to groan at his friend’s sense of humor.
About that time, there was an exclamation from the door.
“When did you get a baby! He’s so cute!”
There was a flash of blonde beside Lucius, and Grace was cooing over Nikolai, making all sorts of annoying baby sounds.
“Can I hold him?” she asked, looking up at Severus.
“You aren’t going to ask the asinine question where I got him?” Severus asked with a smirk. Grace raised a flaxen eyebrow.
“Uh…you either fathered him, found him, or plucked him from somewhere, and that doesn’t change the fact that he’s adorable.” She gushed, holding her arms out hopefully. Severus transferred the lad into her arms, and she expertly balanced him in the crook of one arm and ran a finger across his thin cheek. “Who’s a cutie-butt? You are! That’s right!” she cooed. Nikolai gave a grin, flashing his sharp teeth. “Oh, and a little neck-biter to boot!” she added, though she didn’t seem at all turned off by it.
“Only a quarter.” Severus replied immediately. Grace made another baby sound, and lowered her face to nudge her nose against Nikolai’s. He laughed.
“What do you know of babies, Grace?” Lucius asked.
“I used to baby sit for our neighbors. They had a little girl, and liked to go out on the town without her. They let me watch her until Neil set me up as a lying psychopath.” She said, smiling down at the little boy. He waved a fist at her and squealed. “That’s right, kiddo! You tell ‘em, I’m so mad I can’t!” she laughed. “So what’s his name?” she asked, looking up at Severus, who was watching her curiously.
“His mother named him Nikolai. I’ve got to have his name registered with my surname so I can make him my legal heir.” Grace smiled at Severus.
“If you need a baby sitter, feel free to ask. I do poopy diapers and everything.” She said with a grin. Then she suddenly frowned, and looked at Severus.
“Wait…weren’t you just laughing at my dad a couple months ago for this exact situation?” she asked. Lucius gave a scoff.
“That’s what I said!”

*Insert Snape/vampire joke here* *Laugh maniacally*
It shouldn't be this much fun to mess with Severus and Lucius, but it is, oh it is! Severus threatened to use a cauldron stirrer to welt my ass good if I gave him a kid in this story, but i just told him to stop making promises and he got all flustered and stomped off. So here we are!
Don't forget Chester the plot bunny. He needs sustenance. He needs LOVE. So oblige him....love him.....squeeze him and call him 'George.'
