Narcissa kept her back pressed against the wall of the castle, looking over the corner to see two stray wizards talking amongst themselves. The wizards were guarding the entrance of the castle, on guard for any Death Eaters who might run inside. Not aware a Death Eater’s wife was standing a few feet from them. She held her breath, fear that her fast intake of air would alert them. It was a fast run from the Great Hall to the dungeons and she had to avoid being caught. It would not do anyone good if a student or even a ghost caught sight of her. Grudgingly, she admit to herself that being a wife of a Death Eater for years had its benefits far more than gaining power.
Narcissa clench a white satchel to her chest, holding on for dear life. Seeing as she was running out of time, she had no choice but to pull out a wand from the satchel. During the battle, she found a lone wand underneath a fallen suit of armor and hid it before anyone could see. Her willowy fingers wrapped around the oak wood, pointing the tip at the wizards.
A quick flash of light and the wizards fell. Not taking a chance for any more people showing up, Narcissa darted out through the doors. Her long blond hair flew in the wind as she raced through the destroyed Hogwarts grounds, running like being chased by the devil himself. She crossed several large craters in the earth and moved over some of her comrades that no one saw fit to take into the castle. Narcissa ran down the steep hill toward Hogsmeade and climbed over crops of rocks to her destination, the Shrieking Shack.
Narcissa blasted the door off, sending the door flying to the opposite wall. The wand buzzed, not liking this new owner. She paid no heed; the wand would serve it’s purpose for now. Her hand shot up and covered her nose as soon as she caught the whiff of the age of the place. Narcissa suppressed a shudder as she took in the more than a decade year old dust and animal droppings. The windows were boarded up as she used the wand to light her way. She stepped over fallen furniture and side step from a ripe pile of animal bones. The light of the wand caught the ruby colored reflection she hurried over to the prime source.
Narcissa casted a spell as a large ball of light floated above her. She felt her heart stopped at the sight that greeted her in this new light. A puddle of blood formed a crude ring around the fallen form. The black clothing almost faded in the dark red blood as the pale skin was the only thing that made this form even visible.
“Oh my dear Severus,” she whispered. “Left to rot like an animal.”
She banished the blood away and knelt down beside him. Narcissa was unafraid as she gently turned his face toward her to see the large gaping hole in his neck. She swallowed hard, brushing away the blood matted black locks of his from his face. Even in this state, Severus had a scowl on his face. The tiny rasp of air was the only sign that the wizard was still alive; not even death could pull this stubborn wizard to his knees.
Without delay, Narcissa took out her satchel and grabbed several phials. The first one was solid gold, enough to pay for a nice unicorn drawn carriage. Affixed on the top was a ruby phoenix, it’s wings spread out in mid flight. She took of the cork, saving the ruby topper in her pocket, tipping it over the large wound. A single drop fell and hit the outer edges of the bloody wound. Narcissa was silent as she watched the phoenix tear mending the flesh until it left nothing but a tiny scar the size of a bottle cap.
The pureblood poured vials upon vials of potions down his throat. She watched his parlor returned and she could see some pink in his face. Narcissa pried Severus’ thin lips part wider and nearly shoved a bezoar through his mouth. It never hurt to be extra safe when dealing with snake poison. Narcissa held her breath watching it until the body of the Potion’s Master squirmed and thrashed. The body jumped and twisted on the side until the body expelled the stone out of the throat. Narcissa sighed in relief as she listened to Severus cough and breath.
He turned his body over to her, “Narcissa? What in Morgana’s name are you doing here?”
“Once I heard about what happened to you, I had to go down and help you…”
Severus coughed and pushed himself off the floor, his body shaking from the trauma it experienced. “I have already fulfilled my wizard oath to you; there is no need to save me.”
Narcissa steady his body up and eased him off the ground. Severus leaned against her despite his words. “You are still a friend.”
“I do not need your pity, Narcissa.” Severus’ onyx eyes glared at her like she was some sort of insect.
“Yes, possibly, but you defiantly deserve better than this fate.” Narcissa levitated a fallen sofa off the ground and lowered Severus down. There was no way that she could carry him very far.
His body fell into the moth eaten mustard yellow colored cushions, his blood soaked robes already staining. In her opinion, it made the ill color furniture far better. The legs of the sofa looked like a wild dog chewed on them out of sheer boredom. The wand reluctantly let Narcissa clean up the blood from both of them; the wand didn’t see the pureblood witch as its new owner.
“Who won?” Severus grunted out the question. Yet, he probably already knew that.
“Harry Potter,” Narcissa closed her eyes, the words seem foreign. Some many years spent waiting up for Lucius to return home from those awful revels only to see that it was meaningless. The pang in her chest had a hard time explaining itself. It was a rush of emotions that left her disorientated.
“At least it wasn’t for nothing,” without looking at him, she could hear the sneer painted on his face. “But do you expect me to live happily in this new world? If Voldemort sought me as disposable, I will only be treated as scum by the whole populace as the killer of Albus Dumbledore. You should have left me to die.”
Narcissa rounded on him, her ears burning as it heard those words. “I would not have left you to rot like some poor weasel,” her foot stomped on the pile of animal bones beneath her, proving a point. It wasn’t intentional but it certainly got a reaction from the Potion’s Master. “You are a friend of the family. And what I have learned in the past year is that friends, true friends, are hard to come by.”
A slow smirk appeared on his pale face, his voice rasp from the trauma of his throat being ripped apart. “Why, Narcissa, it sounds like you love me.”
Narcissa shook her head looking at the ever dour man sitting in the now brown stained sofa. “I pity the woman who finds herself in love with you,” Narcissa looked out of the paper thin curtain, her eyes scanning the whole area. “Besides, I love Lucius with all my being. Not even your….charms can change that.”
Severus craned his head back but he groaned as the strain was no doubt painful. “What are you looking for, Mrs. Malfoy?”
“My house-elf is suppose to have arrived by now…”
“You mean this house-elf?”
Both turned their heads faster than one could say Accio. The light of the ball above them couldn’t hide the heavy five o’clock beard on his long twisted face as his wild black hair twisted up from lack of care.
“Antonin…” Narcissa felt the corner of her lip twisted into a sneer.
Antonin Dolohov threw down a leathery object to the ground and it was only by the light did Narcissa recognize it as Whimsy her house-elf with her stained yellow pillowcase. The creature was still alive, by the wheezy intake of air coming out of the long nose. Narcissa hid her wand hand behind her back before the dark wizard could see her wand. A Slytherin always kept a card up her sleeve.
“Madam Malfoy, I never knew you to be soft in the heart. With that cold exterior, I thought you as an ice goddess.” Narcissa suppressed a shudder as she watched his eyes look her figure up and down like a piece of meat.
“Antonin, what are you doing here?” she asked, even a few feet from him and she could smell the overpowering scent of filth on his body.
“I came here to pay my last respect to my fallen comrade,” his dark eyes moved over to Severus on the sofa. “But, I see that he is very well indeed.”
Narcissa felt the air grow heavy every moment this man stood in the faint outline of Severus body had left. “There was no need to attack my house-elf, Dolohov.”
With the movement of Dolohov’s eyes on her again, she regretted ever saying anything. No doubt if Severus throat was still recovering, he might be of some use to this situation. He was better than words like anyone else.
“But there is, Madam Malfoy. I heard the Dark Lord wanted Severus gone…he had finished his purpose and there was no further need. Now to see him alive, it feels like his life is mocking our Lord’s memory.”
At last, through a grunt, Severus spoke to the wild wizard. “What do you intend on doing about that, Antonin?”
Antonin drawn a wand out from behind his back and aimed it at Severus. “Why, finish the job of course!” Narcissa rushed forward, at least she attempted to. When her foot moved a few inches forward, his words stung the air. “The fact that you brought him back is not lost to me. I will deal with you later, Narcissa.”
“Avada-”
“Stupfey!”
If it wasn’t for the quick shield charm, Antonin might have been taken down. Now, Narcissa had to deal with an angry and insane dark wizard. While his beady little eyes were glaring at her, Narcissa casted a shielding spell, abet more powerful than Dolohov’s quick one, over Severus on the couch.
It was a far fetch plan but when he lowered his wand, it looked like it worked. “You are right, Narcissa. As a woman, your body will be needed to carry on the pureblood race. But, we don’t really need your soul…Venaspectus!”
A slash of purple flame expelled from the tip and aimed right towards her. The purple flame wrapped around her chest and clung to it. It exploded, sending out sparks of green lights and Narcissa let out a silent scream as she felt her body fall by the force of the curse.
The dusty floor cradled her fall but as soon as her back met it, Narcissa felt fire coursing through her veins. Heated daggers stab themselves over and over her body as she felt like an icy cold spoon dug in her eyes. Her heart was thundering loudly, almost to the point it could burst. She felt the sharp teeth of a saw cutting through her heart and splitting the organ into two.
Through her tear clouded vision, she saw Severus grab the fallen wand and sent a fury of curses at Dolohov. Her body thrashed on the floor, trying to break free of the pain, but it no use. Narcissa cried out over the crack of Apparition that sounded through the house. Severus ran over to her and she felt his large hands cradling her face.
Over the pain and fire exploding in her body, Severus began to sing. As he let out a chorus of incantations through his thin lips, Narcissa felt the coldness of the darkness overtaking her. For the darkness and the end of this torturing, she gladly surrender to the sleep as it pulled her mind into the welcoming embrace.
