Day one: Russia, Fur of the Anarok
I hold out my hand to her. She looks at it as if it might bite. I've never seen it do that, but it might surprise us both. No wait, it won’t.
"Take my hand, woman." She looks at me, and raises her hand a little. She hesitates. Oh Merlin. Honestly?
"Where's that Gryffindor courage when you need it?" I say, and reach out to grab her hand. I pull her close to me, because I can't do a side-along apparition with her several feet away. Really.
Wrapping my other arm around her waist, I bring my lips level with her ear. "I won't bite." And I apparate.
The forest materializes around us and the moment I feel the rough floor under my feet, I release her. I glance around us and take a deep breath. The scents of the wilderness assault my senses. I close my eyes for a moment. I love the smell of the forest. When I open my eyes, she hasn't moved. She is still standing very close, her eyes closed and her breathing shallow. I take a small step back and poke her in the arm. "You're not a fan of apparating are you?"
She's actually turning a little green as she shakes her head very carefully. I'm glad I stuffed those vials in my robes before we left. I pull one out and place it in her hand.
"Drink this and hurry. We don't have all day." And with that, I whirl around and stalk passed the trees. I don't wait to see if she follows. If she doesn't, it's her loss.
I walk for about ten minutes, and by the sound of it, she's struggling to keep up with me.
"Aargh!" Oh, what now? Well, at least I know she's following me. I glance over my shoulder and stop walking. I turn around slowly, as though she might disappear if I move any faster. I can't stop the corners of my lips twitching into a smirk. But I won't laugh. I won't. It might be dangerous.
Granger is sitting on her butt in the mud, surrounded by dried leaves, with twigs sticking out of her hair and a small trail of blood running from a cut on her cheek. She's just staring at her feet, as though she is trying to figure out how they got to be so close.
Though the sight of her on her arse is highly amusing, I can't forget why we are here. Behind her, I can see the shrubbery moving in a disturbing pattern. Granger's shoulders shake for a moment, and I think it might've been a silent sob. Ah hell. The leaves behind her start to part, and a few long strides place me in arms reach of her. I grab her arm and drag her to her feet. She faces me, unshed tears in her eyes, but whatever it is, it's going to have to wait. She opens her mouth to say something, but I shake my head to silence her.
Over her shoulder I watch the huge wolf emerge. The girl tries to turn but I won't let her. She's upset enough, and if she makes any kind of noise the wolf might attack. It's a bit surprising she doesn't protest at all, but I'm thankful for it.
I watch the big grey wolf close in on us at an agonizingly slow pace. It's grey eyes are trained on my face but I can see its nostrils flare. What's it looking for? What is it trying to find? Fear?
Without taking my eyes off the beast, I pull Granger closer, trying to find a tremble, a shiver, to give away any hint of fear. Nothing. She merely stands there, her palms flat against my chest where I have pulled her against me. She gives me nothing, but the wolf has picked something up nonetheless. I check myself. Am I afraid of it? No. I'm not. Then what is it? I narrow my eyes at the beast, trying to figure it out. It's still moving, its muscles moving under its thick coat of fur, rippling in a hypnotizing way. I watch him crouch slightly, now within reach, poising himself to jump.
I have to move now, if I'm ever going to.
In one fluent motion I shove the witch to the side and pull my wand out of my pocket. The creature does exactly what I expected it to do. Only a moment later I find myself on the forest-floor, a drooling muzzle only inches from my face, teeth bared and growling softly. And still, I don't feel fear. I'm moments from death, my wand-hand trapped under the heavy body of the Anarok, and still I am not afraid. Why not?
I know I should not move my eyes from the beast, I know it would probably be the last thing I do, but there is a force inside of me which is stronger than I am. My eyes move from the snarling wolf of their own accord, without my permission, and they slide over to where I pushed the young woman only moments before. My gaze is met by an empty forest floor. Hell. I can only hope she gets herself to safety after the beast has ripped my throat out.
My eyes flick back to the graying muzzle leaking saliva over my formerly pristine robes. It's raising itself back, arching its spine to let out a howl. The sound wrecks through me, its chest vibrating against mine, and it goes silent.
The giant beast topples over, away from me, freeing my body. I sit up and prod it with my wand. Stiff as a board. Pertificus Totalis. Of course. She is famous for it.
I look up, and I see her standing over the wolf, her wand trained at its chest, and shaking. In her other hand, she holds a tuft of white fur.
I get up from the ground and grab her wand-arm.
"We have to leave. Now."
Her eyes flick over to me for only a second before moving back to the beast. A slight nod of her head is all I need, and we apparate.
A/N: Well, only a few more days until Christmas and our couple is off on their trip. Let me know what you guys think. Thank you for reading.
