Living: Chapter 12:
Harry staggered into the room and fell to his knees. Hermione bent down to help him up. She couldn’t see where the blood was coming from.
“Harry, who did this to you?” Harry put his arm around Hermione’s shoulder. He was disoriented and didn’t answer. They sat on the sofa with Severus sitting on the nearby chair.“Harry, where were you attacked?” Hermione was frantic and not helping the situation. Her hands kept moving from Harry’s head, to his arms then back to his face. She looked like a frantic bee trying to slurp the last nectar from a dying summer flower.Severus came and stood by their side, “Hermione give him a chance to breathe. I’m going to try and stop this bleeding.” The quick healing spell stopped the blood flow, which also stopped Hermione’s breakdown. She took a deep breath and dropped her hands to her sides.“I actually was out looking for you Hermione.” Harry turned to her and grabbed onto her hand. “None of us had seen you since dinner and we all were worried. You’ve been upset about something lately and Ginny said she couldn’t say why.”“Harry I was with Draco doing rounds.” Hermione shook her head at him as if she were scolding a wayward child.“That’s supposed to make me feel better knowing you were with Draco?” Snape smirked as he thought about what Harry would think if he’d seen what they’d been doing when he came knocking on his door. In fact it made him gleeful inside.“As I was saying, I was looking for you and…wait a minute. What are you doing down here in Snape’s chambers?” Harry looked from Hermione to Severus and back to Hermione again.Hermione sat with her hands in her lap. Not making eye contact with Severus at the moment was a good idea. Her mind was blank. She wasn’t sure how she was going to answer Harry’s question.“Mr. Potter, not that it is any of your business, but Miss Granger and Mr. Malfoy encountered some problems whilst doing their rounds about the castle.” Severus’s voice was strong and firm showing no indication that he was telling an outright lie.“Mr. Malfoy just left and Miss Granger was on her way out when you came pounding on my door.” Harry still looked at both Hermione and Snape looking for any cracks in the story. You could see that he still held many questions on the tip of his tongue.“More importantly Harry, we need to hear your story and how you were hurt.” Hermione took the moment of silence to quickly change subjects. She was calmed down enough to lead the discussion, and surprised that Severus was sober enough to give a plausible answer to Harry.“I was leaving the library when I rounded the corner and someone hit me over the head.” Harry winced as he reached up to touch his head. “It knocked me off my feet. I didn’t realize I was bleeding until I was heading down here to the dungeons.”“That’s it? Someone randomly decided to hit The Savior of the Wizarding World upside the head as he was leaving the library?” Severus tried to keep his sarcasm under control, but it never worked when Harry was involved. “There have been many times I have been tempted to do the very same thing myself.”“Sir,” Harry said politely as can be, “Need I remind you that you did hit me and Ron upside the head back in our fourth year.” Harry looked at Snape trying to set the record straight.“I hit you because you were talking during a exam, not when you were exiting the library.” Severus deadpanned his answer back to Harry. Hermione was trying hard not to laugh out loud. The general conversation has gotten way off-track, but it was amusing seeing where this was going. Hermione wondered if Severus was always this good at diversion, or if the fire whiskey was helping him out. He was an ex-spy with twenty years of experience.“Mr. Potter, have you been arguing with anyone, say a Slytherin perhaps?” Severus hated saying it, but it was the most likely scenario. Even with the war over, Gryffindors and Slytherins were not friends. More specifically, Draco and Harry still hated each other. There had been previous conflicts, but most had taken place on the Quidditch pitch. But what would have prompted the attack. He would have to try and sort this out in the morning. His own head felt like he’d been thumped crossed-eyed.“Harry please escort Miss Granger back to the Gryffindor common room. We’ll meet with Headmistress McGonagall tomorrow after breakfast.” Severus only wanted to take a potion and head to bed. He made a pleading look to Hermione and gave a slight motion towards the door.“Umm, yes Harry, let’s be going now. “She took Harry’s hand and pulled him up. He still seemed to be observing the interaction between she and Severus. “You look like you are a little off. That bump on the head seems to have made you a bit daft.”Harry glared at her, scrunching up his eyebrows. “I may have been hit on the head but I’m not raving bonkers.” They continued to argue as Hermione led Harry out of Severus’s chamber. As she glanced back, Severus grinned and winked at her. She practically floated all of the way back to Gryffindor Tower.***************
Shadows always hold secrets. Within those shadows, eyes followed Hermione and Harry as they left Severus Snape’s rooms. Evil intentions also lurked within the shadows hidden in the darkness of night. No one could have foreseen what would be heading their way. What seemed innocent now, would turn threatening. What should have remained in the past was now part of the present.
