There was an eerie silence in the room as they entered the lounge. Pansy and Blaise exchanged looks, and with one hint of a nod from him, she knew for certain they had stumbled upon more than just a regular morning at the Manor. They just fucked, she thought to herself, glancing at Granger and Draco as they shared more than a few cheeky smiles. It was utterly sickening.
Truthfully, Pansy had moved on since her neither-here-nor-there relationship with the youngest Malfoy, but he was her first love and there would always be a part of her that longed for him, in the dead of night. When their song came on the radio or when she was feeling nostalgic. Yet seeing him head over heels for another brought back a wave of memories and with it, unexpected jealousy. She didn’t want Draco. She just wanted what he had. She wanted to fall in love again. She wanted to be loved again.
Part of her still wondered if he had ever loved her at all.
It was a burden she had never shared, having only come to terms with it after their split. Draco wasn’t the type to talk about feelings and such. The only emotion he ever conveyed was of a purely physical nature, and even then he held back.
He never loved you, idiot.
“Parkinson,” interjected Blaise, looking at her with a touch of concern. “You all right? Looks like you’ve seen a grim.”
“I’m fine,” she lied. “Just tired.”
“Not as tired as these two,” gestured her partner.
Pansy nodded. Apparently she wasn’t the only one to pick up on the newlywed couple’s vibes. “We should probably get the show on the road.”
“Right.” Blaise cleared his throat, gathering everyone’s attention. “So we’re clear on the fact that both of you will meet with the Dark Lord?”
The other two nodded.
“Brilliant. Now we can talk strategy,” he beamed, loving a good scheme. “He’ll want an explanation…regarding the marriage.”
Draco stood up. “I’ve got that covered,” he assured them. “I married her to prove our superiority over the wizarding world, and what better way than to wed Potter’s best friend?”
“That’s good. He might buy that,” nodded Blaise. “But he’ll want you to prove it.”
“What do you mean?”
“You know. He’ll want you to treat her…unkindly.”
Draco screwed his face.
“Voldemort will want you to torture me,” Hermione gathered, earning their attention. “Or something along those lines.”
Blaise seemed to reflect her words. “Exactly. Do you think you’re up for it?”
“Yes. I’ve had worse,” she shrugged.
“I was asking your husband.”
Draco stared at them uncomfortably. “Well, I’d rather it be me than him,” he said, looking ill. “Merlin knows what he would do if he got the chance.”
“He will get the chance,” Pansy chimed in. “He’s Lord Voldemort. He’ll do as he pleases, especially where a Muggle-born is concerned.”
The other three fell into mutual silence.
“Well, it’s true,” she added.
“Are we in over our heads?” asked Blaise.
“No,” answered Granger, disgustingly confident as usual. “We aren’t a group of scared teenagers anymore. We’re grown adults with enough skill and tenacity to take him down. I know it.”
“Is that what you told Harry?” Pansy, Blaise and Granger faced Draco as the words left his lips. His wife looked shocked, nauseous and then angry – very, very angry. Evidently she had yet to recover from the loss.
“I think it’s best we focus on the now,” Blaise interrupted, before things got out of hand. He was good as diffusing tension. That was his role – the human buffer. “Let’s leave the past in the past.”
Draco frowned. “It’s not that simple. We can’t ignore the past. There’s a reason he won last time and it would do us well to not make the same mistakes twice.” He definitely had a point. “I say we meet with the Order tonight and hear what they have to say.”
“Tried,” shrugged Blaise. “It’s impossible to get a hold of them. They’re either in hiding, in Azkaban or in complete denial of our stance on the matter.”
“They don’t trust us,” Draco concluded.
His best friend nodded.
“That’s rubbish,” Pansy huffed. “We have one of their own right now,” she said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. She gestured to Hermione. “Get her to owl them. Sorted.”
The boys glanced at each other, clearly having just realized the solution to their problem.
“I don’t know…” Hermione said quietly. “I…I haven’t spoken to any of them since…since the loss. They might think I’m under the Imperius Curse.”
“It’s our only chance,” said Draco, walking over to her. “We need their help.”
She nodded. “I’ll try, but I won’t guarantee anything.”
“Perhaps you should meet with them alone,” suggested Blaise. “It might be overwhelming for all of us to join.”
The others seemed to agree.
“And when should we arrange this meeting?” asked Draco.
“I can owl them tonight and plan something for tomorrow,” offered Granger, receiving looks of approval. “The only question is who.”
“I nominate Weasley,” said Blaise. “Your Weasley.”
The way Draco’s mouth twitched at the mention of Ron Weasley was enough to confirm any suspicions Pansy had regarding the newlywed couple’s current status. He felt something for the girl, clearly.
~
He was the most logical option. It was a no-brainer, really. But, still, Hermione felt oddly treacherous, writing a letter to her former boyfriend, asking him to trust the enemy. In this case, however, they weren’t the enemy. They were on the same side for the first time in wizarding history. Never had a Weasley and Malfoy joined forces.
Dear Ronald,
It’s me. It’s Hermione. I’m writing to you with hopes for a meeting. I haven’t seen or spoken to you since your arrest so many years ago. I can’t imagine the pain and anguish you must have gone through whilst locked away in Azkaban, but I can assure you, you have my full support. Whatever our status, I will always be there for you.
I’m sure you have heard of my recent marriage. There is nothing I can say that will justify my decision in one letter, but if you would allow it, I would love to explain everything face-to-face. I would love to see you again. I know the world turned upside down when Harry passed away, but I’m here to tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Please consider my offer.
Regardless, I’ll be at the Leaky Cauldron tomorrow evening.
Love always,
Hermione Granger.
It felt like salt on the wound, meeting with him just to explain her union with Malfoy. He was Draco to her, but she knew he would always be Malfoy to Ron. The boys had gone through too much to bury the hatchet. Then again, she had assumed the same for herself once upon a time.
“Finished?” asked Draco, peering over her shoulder. He had been pacing her bedroom back and forth since Blaise and Pansy left. “I’ll fetch an owl.”
“Wait,” she blurted. “I…I really don’t think he’ll be up for it.”
“Why not?”
Hermione glanced at him with an obvious expression.
“Ah,” gathered Draco. “Just tell him it’s fake.”
“It isn’t fake?”
He paused. “Well…not as fake as we thought it would be.”
“Fair enough.”
Her husband strolled over, placing both hands on her shoulders and giving them a rub. It felt so relaxing, as though he had done it a dozen times already. They were so synchronized. It was quite telling. “Are you scared?” he asked in a quiet voice.
She took a deep breath. “Terribly.”
“Me too,” he admitted. “For you. For everything he’ll make me do.”
“Don’t think twice about it,” Hermione said firmly. “Do as he says or I’ll cover will be blown.”
“I know,” nodded the young man. “That’s what bothers me. I have no say in the matter, no control.”
“You have all the control in the world,” she said, turning around and standing. Hermione pulled him in for a hug, realizing it was their first hug a second later. She could feel his heart beating against her own. “He won’t suspect a thing. We’ll make sure of it.”
“I hope so.”
“I know so.”
