Chapter 12
Watching what Harry was doing, fascinated, Narcissa sputtered quietly, “This is so simple! Is this really all there is to it?”
“All there is to it,” Harry chuckled, grinning, as he demonstrated how to use the manual juicer. Remus had picked up a metal one earlier from a small store nearby and he was now showing her how to use it. The juice had been a big hit and they were going through it quickly, so Remus thought picking one up and having the elves do it for them every day would be better. Tossing aside the orange, he handed her the small glass of juice he had made from it.
Taking it then sipping, Narcissa nodded vigorously, “This is delicious! Oh yes, the elves can manage this quite easily.”
“Just make sure they get a lot of oranges. It takes quite a few to make the juice. Also, that they get the biggest and juiciest ones they can find. Though you can work with the ones that have seeds, the seedless are better for it.”
“I will,” she told him with a firm nod. “Oh, this is good! Yes, they will be taking this task on!”
“Completely fascinating,” Lucius said with a shake of his head, looking at the simple device. “Can it do the same with other fruits?”
“Some yes, some no,” Harry shrugged, shoving the juicer back. “I think like any of the citrus family it can work with. The other kinds take something else I'm not sure about. You just have to experiment a little to see what works.”
Having sat there and watched the demonstration, Sirius shook his head. “I think, maybe, between all of us, we can put a charm on it to where it does it automatically. It's good though! If I had known how simple it was, we would have been doing this all along.”
Not having thought about that, Lucius nodded firmly, “Yes, I'm certain we can find a charm for it. With it being metal, it should take quite nicely.”
Taking a seat, Narcissa shook her head, “Muggles, I have to admit, have some ingenious devices! And good ideas.”
Grinning, shaking his head, Harry took a sip of his Coke. Head coming up as he began to hear the thoughts of someone new, he relaxed when he realized who it was. A minute later, Charlie stepped into the kitchen. “Hey, Charlie,” Harry said, waving to him.
“Hey, Harry!” Charlie grinned. Looking around, he lowered his voice then said, “Can one of the elves keep Draco out of the kitchen for a few?”
Curious about that, Narcissa's brow furrowed then she looked at her husband, who seemed to be equally puzzled. Assuming it was nothing to worry about, she sent an elf off to keep an eye on her son for a few minutes. Looking back at Charlie, she nodded, “They'll make sure he stays out until I say otherwise. Why though?”
“Mum sent over his birthday cake,” Charlie explained, pulling out the box. “I assumed you did the traditional thing with the birthday dinner and probably wouldn't want him to see it until then.” Putting the box on the table, he unshrunk it then took off the protections. Pulling the lid open, he turned the cake to where everyone could see it.
Eyes widening, Narcissa gasped, “Oh, that is wonderful! He will love it.” The cake was shaped like a dragon lying down. Its tail twitched slightly, smoke curled from its nostrils and its eyes opened. It was covered with a shimmering green and silver icing. “Tell Molly we pass along our thanks. This is magnificent!”
“Your mum does the best cakes in the world,” Harry grinned, looking at it. “Really, she would make a fortune if she did it professionally.”
“She's a might busy for that most times,” Charlie laughed, shaking his head, but giving a nod to Narcissa. “It's a good suggestion though! With the twins gone now, she has more time. I'll say something to dad. He can bring it up to her.” Pulling some other packages out of his pocket, he unshrunk them and pushed them towards Narcissa. “It's not much, but it's from us. Like some sweets from Honeydukes, some cookies mum made and the like. There is one other thing and you should probably give it to him now since its living.” Pulling out a small covered cage, he said, grinning, snickering, “It's from Fred and George.”
“Oh, hell, how bad is this going to get? And do we need armor?” Sirius joked, grinning and shaking his head.
“It's not. He's harmless, I promise,” Charlie grinned back. Taking the small covering off, he said, “It's a pygmy puff. They are breeding them to sell. From what they told us, they can't breed them fast enough, actually. Right now, they're trying to get them in the house colors. They said so far all they've managed is Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw are giving them fits. So, since these aren't on the market yet, they thought Draco would like one.”
Looking over at the miniature puffskein in its cage, Narcissa actually smiled at the cute little creature. “That is adorable! Not dangerous?”
“No more than a full sized puffskein,” Charlie assured her.
“Draco will love him,” Narcissa said with a firm nod, pulling the cage closer.
Looking at the creature, Lucius shook his head. “If they are coming up with products like this, they will be a huge success.”
“They are doing very well actually,” Charlie told him with a firm nod. “Some of what they have dreamed up will have Zonko's scrambling to catch up. The fireworks alone are very popular. We're still wondering just where they got the start up money though. Mum is having kittens wondering if they did something illegal to get it.”
Snickering, looking down, Harry said, “It's nothing to worry about. They got it legally.”
Grinning from ear to ear, Sirius laughed, catching on, “You didn't!”
“I'm saying nothing! You can't prove anything!” Harry told him, looking warily at Charlie.
Grinning from ear to ear himself, Charlie shook his head. “I won't say a word, Harry! How much did you give them?”
Grinning sheepishly, Harry admitted, “My Tri-Wizard winnings. I didn't want them after what happened. So, since I figured we could all probably use a laugh with this mess going on, I gave it to them with the promise they would get Ron new dress robes with some of it.” Shrugging, he said, “I'm their investor as they call it, so I'll get some back.”
Nodding, looking pleased, Charlie said, “I'll say something to dad so he can work with mum. He'll understand. He's actually quite proud of them and their success.” Starting to grin again, he shook his head then told the younger man, “Bill and I wondered if you didn't have something to do with this. After all, you were the only one we could think of that would have the money to do it and were close enough to them to be comfortable giving it over.”
“They're going to make a ruddy fortune,” Harry grinned. “You forget, I was in the dorms with them and saw what they could do! The snackboxes alone are going to make them rich!”
“True!” Charlie laughed. Fishing in his pocket, he pulled out another letter for Harry and passed it over. “Your cousin wrote again.”
Taking it, pleased, Harry tore off the stamp then passed it to Charlie for Mr. Weasley before opening it and beginning to read.
Pocketing the stamp, he said, “Well, I have to get back home. Mum just wanted to make sure the cake got here in time. Tell Draco we all said Happy Birthday.”
“We will,” Narcissa said, pleased, smiling softly. “And pass along our thanks to Molly. The cake is wonderful and is most appreciated!”
“I will!” After saying goodbye to everyone else, Charlie took his leave.
Sending the cake and presents off with the elves, Narcissa covered the pygmy puff up and sat him aside then sent one of the elves to fetch her son. “That was very nice of them! Most unexpected.”
“They're great,” Harry told her distractedly as he read.
When a puzzled Draco came into the kitchen, Narcissa motioned him over then told him, smiling, pushing the covered cage over to him, “Fred and George Weasley sent this for your birthday.”
Looking at the cage warily, Draco's brow furrowed as he looked at his parents. “Is it dangerous?” That was his first thought. After all, those two—one never knew what they would come up with!
“It's perfectly safe,” Lucius assured him with an amused snort.
Taking his father's word for it, Draco nodded then pulled the covering off. Looking at the small creature, he grinned. The fur was green with silver tips and it was looking at him, humming softly.
“It's a pygmy puff,” Narcissa told him, smiling. She then went to explain what Charlie told them.
Nodding, liking not only the small creature, but the fact he got one before anyone else, he pulled it out of its cage and sat it on his shoulder. “This is a good present! I like him!”
Sitting there, having taken it all in, Remus smiled, shaking his head, “I agree; those two are going to make a mint!”
Reading through the letter from Dudley, Harry's brow was furrowed. Nudging Sirius, he said, tone distracted, “Dudley went to the doctor. He said they are talking about getting him some kind of surgery to help him lose weight.”
Looking at the letter his godson was holding, Sirius asked, slightly concerned, “Isn't that dangerous?”
“It is,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “All surgeries have plenty of risks. They've tried everything else, though, and it's not working. He's been on a strict diet for the past two years and still keeps gaining. He's also been exercising and all that as well. Nothing is helping. The school sent a note home to have him checked by a doctor to see if it wasn’t a medical problem. It's not. From what he says, he's having problems with his joints and all kinds of other things now, so he wants something done.”
Listening in while petting the pygmy puff he decided to call Salazar, Draco asked, “How big is your cousin? If they are talking something so drastic, he's got to be big.”
“If we put you, Crabbe and Goyle together, you still don't make Dudley,” Harry told him, looking up.
Eyes widening, Narcissa looked at Harry and Sirius, “You're joking!”
“He's not,” Sirius told her with a shake of his head. “Dudley is huge.”
Sputtering softly, she asked, “How old is he?”
“Same age as Draco and me,” Harry told her, looking in her direction.
Jaw working, she stared at the young man, “How did he get so big?”
“My aunt and uncle let him have whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted it,” Harry told her with a shake of his head. “The diet should have worked though. It was strictly enforced, especially at school. And boxing is good exercise. That should have helped take the weight off. He just keeps gaining, from what he said.” Brow furrowed, Harry looked at Sirius then said, “You know, I've not seen him much since last year, but what I did see was he was sticking to the diet. It should have helped some! And the school would have ensured that he stuck to it. I don't get it.”
Not sure what to say, Sirius shook his head, brow furrowed. “The surgery—will it work?”
“It should,” Harry nodded. “There are several kinds of it now, but they do tend to work. There are medicines that are supposed to help. Those, though, don't tend to do the best. They can have awful side effects and some are very addictive.” Sighing, flipping to the last page, he snagged the two pictures there and held them while he finished. Chuckling, he looked at the pictures then asked, “Is there any way to get a couple normal, like Muggle ones, of me to send to him? He's asking for them.” Holding up the one picture for Sirius, he said, “That's him in his uniform.”
Taking the picture, but looking at Remus, who was shaking his head, Sirius sighed, “No, I don't think so, Harry. I think we can get a couple of our kind for him though. Since he's someone you lived with, it won't be a problem.” Glancing at the picture, Sirius couldn't help but snort, amused, “That is a hideous uniform!”
“It is!” Harry laughed, shaking his head.
Passing it to Remus, who also gave a soft snort and shook his head, Sirius told him, “We'll get a couple for him, don't worry.”
Curious what Dudley looked like and if he was as big as Potter said, Draco leaned over, looking at the picture Lupin was holding. Eyes widening, he gasped, “He's the size of a mountain! And that uniform is—there are no words!”
“He's always been big,” Harry said, setting the letter down and taking a drink of his Coke. Grinning, he said, “That uniform is nasty! The school is the one Uncle Vernon went to, so he wanted Dudley to go as well.”
“I will never, ever, complain about Hogwarts robes again!” Draco cringed, shaking his head.
Leaning over and looking at the picture when Narcissa was passed it, Lucius' brow furrowed. “Harry, your cousin has shown no kind of magical ability, has he?” He asked, distractedly.
“No, never,” Harry told him with a firm shake of his head. “Why?” he inquired.
Rubbing a finger on his upper lip, Lucius said, “Children who have had their magic bound at a very young age tend to have serious weight problems. I don't mean being slightly overweight either. They tend to run towards morbidly obese, and at the extreme end of that. Nor is it something that a normal diet and exercise work with. They also have behavior problems. The magic rebels against the binding and causes issues. This—as big as he is, I wondered if he ever did.”
Looking at Sirius, who appeared puzzled as well, Harry shook his head. “No, he's never shown any sign at all, ever. It's something I would have heard about too. I mean, with how Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon are about it--” trailing off, he said no more.
“Trust me, if he had, those two would have said something, somewhere. As much as they hate magic, there would have been issues,” Sirius told Lucius quietly.
Nodding, watching as Narcissa passed the picture back to Harry, Lucius made a mental note to say something to Severus. That poor boy—something wasn't right there!
Shaking her head at the image of the child that was the same age as the two sitting at the table being that big, Narcissa sighed. Poor lad! Looking at her son, she smiled at him, “What do you want for dinner, Draco? It's tradition for you to be served your favorite!”
Nodding, Draco thought it over and tried to decide.
Finishing off the last bite of his cake, Harry leaned against Sirius, groaning. He was overly full and slightly uncomfortable from it. The food had been so good, though, that he had eaten too much. “Urk,” he said, shaking his head.
Snorting, grinning himself, Sirius nodded, “I agree! It was delicious, but I think I ate too much.”
Smiling at the two across the table, Narcissa said nothing then went back to watching Draco sort through his presents. Because they were confined to the house, they hadn't been able to get out and do their normal shopping for him, but had managed. Remus and the elves had stepped up, managing to find him all kinds of things so he had his normal big haul when it came to presents. He seemed pleased with what he got, especially the new broom.
Sending one of the elves off for some stomach soother, Sirius looked at Draco then said, “When the two of us feel a bit better, you can come out and give the broom a try in the yard. We'll teach you how to play and you can fly a little.”
“Alright,” Draco nodded, eyeing his new broom covetously. He couldn't wait to get into the air with it!
“Tomorrow we'll sit down and do the thank you cards for the ones that weren't here.” Narcissa told her son, smiling at him.
Nodding, Draco looked at her, “Okay, mother.” Eyeing what was left of the dragon cake, he shook his head, smirking, “I want to thank Mrs. Weasley for that cake! I think it's better than any of them you've ever picked up for me!”
“It was,” Lucius agreed, nodding. Glancing at Harry, he said, “I tend to agree with Harry; she would make a fortune selling them.”
“Told you she does the best,” Harry grinned as he took a vial of the stomach soother Sirius passed him once the elf popped in with it. Downing it, Harry was about to say something else when his head came up. Feeling the familiar throb in his head start, his eyes widened. Quickly, he passed on to Sirius telepathically, “It's Snape! I've got to get out of here. Just—give some excuse, alright?” Standing quickly, rubbing his temples, he made a mad dash out of the kitchen, heading for the stairs, hoping to get to their bedroom before Snape got fully in the door. It wouldn't kill the problem, whatever it was, but would help some. At least it would lessen the degree of what was coming. He just hoped that Snape wouldn't stay long. If he did, he could expect a really bad headache that wasn't going to go away anytime soon!
Telling his godson he would, Sirius rubbed his eyes as his own head began to throb, gritting his teeth as he did.
Looking at Sirius, having picked up what was said, at least part of it, Lucius rubbed his own temples as his head, too, began to hurt. Brow furrowed, he looked at his wife. This was confusing. So far he hadn't seen Severus so he wasn't sure how Harry knew it was him.
A confused look on her face, Narcissa glanced around, “Is something wrong with Harry?”
Seeing Sirius rub his head, Remus could take a good guess as to what was going on. Nodding, he said, “Harry's having problems with headaches. I think that's what's going on.”
Gritting his own teeth as the headache worsened, Sirius stood. He needed to go see what he could do for his godson. Trying to keep a normal tone, he said, “Let me go see what's up. I'll get him something for the pain if it's another one.” Nodding, he left, grinding his teeth in pain as he brushed by Snape as he came in.
Looking at his confused wife then to Severus, Lucius rubbed his own temples, gritting his teeth at the throbbing. Seeing Lupin glance his way, brow furrowed, he wasn't sure what he should say to anyone. However, he nodded to his old friend and greeted him warmly. Now he got what Harry had told him a few nights before. This—if Harry was getting it worse, the poor young man had to be in agony!
Brow furrowed as Black went by him without any kind of smart remark, Severus looked at Lucius who seemed to be giving him some kind of telling look. Figuring that he would have to get with the older Malfoy, Severus bushed it aside then produced the presents he had brought over for Draco. Smirking, he sat them down, saying, “They might not be what your parents will give you, but you'll enjoy them!”
Grinning, Draco said thanks and began to tear into them. Severus always gave him the most interesting things!
Sitting in the small parlor that they had warded heavily, Lucius was walking Snape through just what he had found out since that memory had been sent off. Shaking his head, he rubbed his temples. Though the pain was gone for him, Harry was apparently still hurting. He could feel it. Though it wasn't pain like he had felt, it wasn't real comfortable either.
Digesting what was said, Severus looked down at the floor, shaking his head. “This is—I don't even know where to begin to help.”
“We don't know what to do either,” Lucius admitted quietly. “The pain, Severus—he wasn't joking! He's in agony! And he says it's just you and Dumbledore that causes this kind of reaction, at least that he's encountered so far. Nor is being on the third floor helping much. It's dimmed it slightly, but not killed it.”
Looking at Lucius, Severus asked, “Do they have any clue why?”
“No, none,” Lucius told him firmly.
Taking that in, Severus nodded. Sighing, he rubbed the bridge of his nose. “He has the three forms of telepathy right now, correct? And Lupin says there are two more coming?”
“That's what he told me,” Lucius confirmed. “He's not just saying that, Severus. I can easily talk to him. It's like this conversation, in fact. I also know what those two are doing and other tidbits without having to concentrate to get them. He gets the other two forms from those around him, like Narcissa, Draco and Lupin. He has his way of relegating it to background noise by now, but its there. And he knew you were coming in before you did. It's not him playing.”
Nodding slowly, Severus sighed, “I'll see what we can find on what kind of bond this may be and where the so-called gifts are coming from, aside from what was in that prophecy. If we find either, we may find a way to assist in blocking them. Occlumency isn't working?”
“Not at all,” Lucius told him firmly with a shake of his head. “Severus, it's like my shields don't even exist. If it's like that with me, it is probably the same with others that can do it as well.”
Not liking that fact, Severus shook his head. Letting out a sigh, he told Lucius, “Get with Potter and Black to see if you can't convince them to have Lupin talk to me about what is going on. I'm certain if you can convince them I'm not here to betray them, whatever I can get from Lupin might give me a direction to look. I won't attempt to get with Potter alone if I'm causing these kinds of issues.”
“I'll see what I can do,” Lucius nodded. “They are talking amongst themselves, so Lupin may know most of what is going on. Especially since he's trying to help them deal with the issues.”
“This bond—the pull—you're working with it?” Severus asked, looking at him.
Sighing and rubbing the bridge of his nose, Lucius nodded, “I've taken to sleeping with the two of them the last couple nights. Nothing more than that, mind you, but it's helping with that 'itch' I talked about. The same with touching. Black has made it clear that the bond won't be completed until Harry agrees. And Harry isn't going to agree until he knows just what's going on, something I can appreciate, no matter how uncomfortable it makes all of us.”
Taking that in, Severus shook his head again. That he could fully understand. It didn't help matters however. Thinking it over, he said, tone distracted, “You're good with runes. I think, if I remember correctly, there is a way to partially activate an uncompleted bond with them. It's not the same and nowhere near as effective, but it may help the matter. Try looking into that and see what you can't get them to agree to. It may assist.”
“I'll see what I can find,” Lucius told him with a firm nod. Sighing, he shook his head, “This is—well, you have no idea how bad this is, Severus. The pull is like nothing I've felt before. And they knew it was coming. What else they know on the matter they won't impart until they get some answers. That is information we need quite frankly.”
“And I don't know how to get it either,” Severus told him sourly. “We can't give any of it up right now. If we did, we would have bigger problems.” Stopping, Severus thought it over then asked, “Potter said psychometry is supposed to come next from what Lupin said?”
“That's what he said,” Lucius confirmed with a nod.
Looking sour, Snape sighed, “That one—from what I've heard, it's the worst of the lot. It's a nightmare to deal with since it involves touching objects.” Stopping, he shook his head, “I don't know what kind of help I can give here. Nor do I even know where to point any of you to try to find something. Give me a few days to see what we can come up with to at least try to find something. The bond might be the key, but I don't think it fully is. And it's not going to happen right now, we all know that.”
Sighing, Lucius looked at him.
Shaking his head once more, Snape said, “Talk to them to see what you can get them to agree to. If I have to, I'll take Lupin elsewhere to discuss it so I don't cause issues. I'll also avoid coming over if at all possible. That is not going to help anything, but I can't get the answers I need either with what is going on. If you do find yourself in a situation where you need help, have Narcissa send an elf. I'll come over. Tell them I'll stay away if I can to make sure I don't cause more issues, once you impart the fact that you explained to me what is going on. However, do try to find out if Potter is picking anything up from me. That we do need to know. You have fully filled Narcissa in from what I gather. I think you need to fill Draco in as well. He needs to know what's going on so he doesn't make a misstep and do something that could endanger everything unknowingly, especially if Potter is picking up thoughts and images from him.”
Nodding, Lucius sighed as he thought about Draco. They hadn't even considered that end, but they needed to with some of what his son knew.
“As a peace offering, I'll send over some potions that should help with the pain once it starts. I know nothing that can stave it off, obviously. What I have will be more effective than the standard ones most brew up. That should be seen as me trying to assist. Beyond that, I don't know what to do,” Severus admitted. “I'll also see what I can find on psychometry. That, I believe, once it starts I can help with. There are spells out there for dragon-hide gloves that purport to help with the issues caused by it. Those I'll start looking up and see if I can't do something.”
“I'll pass that along,” Lucius said. Sighing, he told Severus, “I'm working with this the best I can, you can pass that along, but I'm at a loss as to what to do. None of this was anything we could have prepared for nor is there a way to deal with it completely that I can see.”
“There isn't,” Severus confirmed. Rubbing his forehead, he sighed, “We need whatever it is they know! It might be the pieces we need to slide together to figure out everything that is coming then how to work with it.” Stopping, he looked down then imparted, softly, “I'll get with the other and see what we can't figure out. That party in this mess might have an idea or know where to look to find answers.” Looking at Lucius, he asked, “Is there anything else? Or is that all of this nightmare?”
“On this part, yes,” Lucius told him with a nod. “However, there is one other thing you might want to look into.” Quickly, he went over what they had heard about Harry's cousin. Shaking his head, Lucius said, softly, “Severus, that is not normal! I know some people can get very big, especially if over-indulged, but that is almost monstrous! Can you look into it?”
“I will,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “Petunia had no magic at all, that I can confirm from knowing her. If she did spoil the boy, it might be the reason. This, though, especially if what is proven to work isn't, needs to be investigated. I'll get with someone and see what they can do.” Standing, he brushed off his robes, making sure they were straight, then said, “I'll take my leave. Just fill everyone in then we'll go from there.”
Standing himself, Lucius nodded. “If we need anything we'll get in contact.”
Nodding, Severus then went to say goodbye to the others.
Sitting in his room, looking at his parents, Draco's mouth was hanging open at what he just heard. “You're joking!” Was all he was able to stammer out when they were finished.
“We're not,” Lucius told him dryly, shaking his head.
Flustered, almost panicked, Draco looked between the two, “He can read thoughts?”
“Yes,” Narcissa sighed with a nod. “Don't worry too much, Draco. We just wanted you to know what's going on. Just make sure not to touch him. We have no idea what he picks up from that and we want to be cautious of not only that end but to not cause him more pain.”
Eyes overly wide, Draco looked between his parents and swallowed thickly. Shaking his head, he asked, “How much does he know already? Do you know? What's he picked up?”
“We don't know,” Lucius sighed, rubbing his forehead. Quickly, he walked his son through what they did know of the issue so far.
Taking that in, Draco looked between his parents again shaking his head. “Oh, this is bad!”
“We know,” Narcissa told him gently. “Just be cautious, that's all we're saying. Severus is going to try to help all he can and we're working with it. Harry and your cousin are giving up some information, so we're trying to figure it out from there. We just need to be careful is all and want you to know. If they aren't screaming to Albus about some of it by now, we're safe. Just make sure you don't touch him.”
Thinking about all he knew when it came to certain topics, not to mention his relationship with Tom, Draco felt himself shake slightly. “Now what do we do?”
“Nothing more than we are,” Lucius schooled gently. “We are safe so far. I’m working with the situation the best I can, as is your mother. There is no need for panic. Just go on like normal, nothing more.”
Nodding, Draco swallowed thickly again. This was a nightmare!
Reaching over and rubbing her son's head, Narcissa smiled at him, “It's nothing to worry about. If, or when, that happens, your father will let you know. For now, just act like normal.”
Snorting, Draco gave a small grin, “Easier said than done, mother!”
“This we know,” Narcissa told him with a smile. Standing up, she gave him a kiss on the temple and said, “Let's go outside for a while. It's nice and you can try your new broom. It's your birthday so you should have some fun.”
Sighing, Draco nodded and stood. Though he wanted to try the new broom, he was now concerned about Potter. Oh, this was bad. Sitting Salazar on his shoulder, he grabbed his broom and headed down the stairs.
