Note: Don't hate me for this chapter! Severus has a realization about how to get close enough to Voldemort. He can only come to one conclusion. Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt him! XD
Hermione was still sleeping peacefully when Severus woke the next morning. She hadn't seemed to have moved at all. Mental exhaustion wasn't something unknown to him, so he reconciled with himself that she would be just fine.
He quietly left the hospital wing, only after letting her know he would be back. Deciding he needed a walk, he exited the school. He walked aimlessly down the path before he realized that Hagrid was outside of his hut, lovingly tending to a liter of kittens. Severus watched him for a moment before making his way over.
Hagrid startled as he turned around, "My, Severus, you really ought ter wear some colors. You gave me a frigh'." he said with a hearty laugh as he coddled a tiny, stark black kitten in his huge hands. "What brings ye out here this early?"
"I was wondering, actually, if I may have one of those? My er... girlfriend is going through a rough time, and I was thinking it would cheer her up a bit." Severus explained, of course, leaving out as many details as possible. "We have a toad, but I'm afraid he's not as inviting to hold as one of these would be for her."
Hagrid nodded and beckoned for Severus to follow him. "O' course ye can. I don' see why not. There's more of 'em 'ere." he pointed to a small cage just inside the door of his hut that held six little balls of fur. As Severus looked over them, he noticed that these weren't just any ordinary kittens. To be fair, nothing was ever ordinary in the wizarding world. There was one kitten who was a striking yellow color with lime green eyes, a purple kitten with pinkish eyes, a white one with cerulean blue spots and eyes to match, and the rest were black with gray, orange, and pink eyes.
Hagrid watched as Severus knelt by the cage, watching curiously as the kittens attacked one another, eager to play rough. The young wizard pointed to the purple one. For some reason, it just screamed Hermione's name. A girly kitten for a girl just as bright spirited as the curious purple color. It seemed fitting. "May I take her?"
Hagrid smiled brightly as he opened the cage, and gently withdrew the kitten that looked so much smaller in his large hands. Severus took the little furball and inspected it closely. "I see he is not a her at all." he said, feeling a bit amused by the idea of such a girly looking kitten being male. "I'll take him." he grinned up at Hagrid, "Thank you. I really appreciate it. I hope she likes him."
"Not a problem at all, Severus. Any time. I'd like ter meet yer friend some time. There's not a student at Hogwarts that I don' know, aside from 'er. I hope she gets through whatever she's goin' through." the giant of a man offered his condolences. Severus thanked him once more, and left the small hut, eager to see Hermione's face when he presented her with his surprise.
"What should we call you?" Severus spoke to the kitten, now curled up in his hand. He could feel the vibration of it's content purr as he gently stroked him with his free hand. He had never had a pet before. He was never allowed one, so the idea of sharing not one but two pets with Hermione was entirely too inviting.
Quietly, he reentered the hospital wing, and was delighted to find Hermione sitting up in her bed. Moving closer, his delight dwindled as he took in her appearance. She was paler than usual, and there were large dark circles around her eyes, giving her the look of someone on their death bed.
"Hey you." her voice was comparable to a rasp, but she smiled as she held her hand out to him, beckoning him closer. Severus took a seat on the bed beside her outstretched legs. "What have you got there?" Hermione curiously peered around his side to his hands that were clasped over something.
"It's a surprise." he replied, turning to face her. He placed his hands over her lap and deposited the purple kitten there. Hermione's eyes widened and she gasped with delight. "Believe it or not, this flamboyant kitten is a male." he smirked, lightly stroking the furball with one gentle finger. "What should we call him?"
Hermione stared down, smiling at the kitten in her lap. "I'm not sure. I named Edukas, so I think you ought to name him."
Severus stared at the kitten for a moment. He was colorful, like a flower. While purple was his dominant color, he also had undertones of blue speckled throughout his fur. "How about Lotus? Like the Japanese flower."
Hermione smiled thoughtfully and giggled. "Lazy Lotus." she commented, as the kitten had not woke up since Severus had brought him in. "I like it."
Severus and Hermione remained in silence for a bit longer, admiring Lotus as he slept. Hermione had almost forgotten why she was in the hospital wing to begin with. She had awaken just as she heard the infirmary door close, signaling Severus' departure, and she laid still, lost in her thoughts. What had happened to her to make her end up here? It dawned on her as she had sat up in the bed. The last thing she remembered was squeezing Severus' hand as they sailed across the eerie water.
"Did we get it?" she suddenly asked, having no recollection of whether or not they were successful in their endeavor. Severus nodded. "We did. You're in a bit of a weakened state because you had more than what was in the basin to begin with. See... When I gave you the antidote after the painful symptoms began, the basin refilled.."
"Refilled?" Hermione quirked a brow "How is that possible?"
Severus shrugged. "He's a man of vast precaution, I suppose. So I held onto you to keep you from falling into the water while Dumbledore gave you the Potion."
Hermione noted the sad look on his face as he turned away, trying to hide his distress. "What's wrong, Severus? Did something else happen?"
Severus was in half a mind to tell her about the things she had shouted and pleaded for, but he decided against it. It would do no good to make her worry any more than she already was. He took a deep breath and sighed. This thought had been on his mind since the beginning. It was a topic he didn't particularly wish to address at that moment, but he may as well have. "Hermione... After we destroy the last two, how are we going to get close enough to Him to be able to execute this plan?"
"Severus... You're not think-"
"I am. How else are we going to do it? It isn't as if he's going to come waltzing by as soon as the last one is dealt with."
"Severus... Please..."
"He's not going to kill me, Hermione. If He hadn't killed me until 1998 in your time, he won't kill me now. It's the only way I can see it being a possibility. Unless by some miracle we can convince Lucius to, but even then, I don't trust him as far as-"
Severus was cut short by the sound of the door opening. He and Hermione turned their attention toward the sudden appearance of Lily, James, Remus and Sirius. The four newcomers stood around the bed, admiring the little purple kitten in Hermione's lap.
"What a pleasant surprise, you four." Hermione giggled as Remus gave her oustretched hand a light squeeze. "How did you know I was here?"
Lily picked up the little kitten and held him lovingly to her chest. "We ran into Professor Dumbledore. He told us." she smiled as she patted Lotus on his sleepy head.
"We were thinking,-" James cut in, "That perhaps it would be useful to you two, to er... Learn your Animagus forms. We can use the Room of Requirement to do so. We figured we would go in shifts. Remus to teach you one day, Sirus, the next, and then me. Just so er... Peter doesn't get too suspicious."
Hermione looked to Severus who still seemed down about the thought he'd just divulged to her. "It could help, Severus..."
Severus sighed. Why the hell not? He was always open to learn new things. Not to menton, as Hermione said, it coud be quite useful in obtaining the final two pieces. "Alright then." he agreed.
"Good!" James exclaimed happily. Hermione smiled, noting that the look on is face was so Harry-like. "We'll begin as soon as you're well enough, Hermione.-" he paused as he waved a muffliato over the area, just in case the medi-witch returned. "How do you lot plan on going by getting the Diary?"
"I don't know just yet... But I was going to talk to Dumbledore and see if he couldn't introduce me to Arthur and Molly Weasley over Christmas break and see if maybe they could help come up with a plan to get into the LeStrange's vault for the cup. Last time, the plan fell a bit to pieces, and Harry, Ron and I ended up having to steal the Dragon in the lower chamber to get us out." Hermione explained, smiling as a mischevous grin came to James' face. "I love my boy already." he laughed. "Alright then, that's a plan as well. We'll get going on your lessons, see what you two turn into, and then we'll devise a plan from there to get the last one. But... How are you going to get close enough to Him to be able to do this?"
Hermione hung her head; a sad expression falling on her face. "Severus has a plan... I don't like it, but... He's got a point."
The four others turned their attention to the dark young wizard, waiting expectantly. "Come on, Snape, our lives depend on it." Sirius snapped, earning a murderous look from Severus.
"I'm afraid I have no choice but to join His ranks after the year is out." he stated, eliciting a sharp intake of breath from Lily. "No! Severus... That's what Hermione came back to prevent."
"It is -" Severus raised his voice a bit, "the only way any of us are going to be able to get close enough to Him for when the time comes. I've already taken the necessary precautions and measures to ensure that He cannot get into my mind."
"What about Hermione?" Remus spoke up "If Pettigrew is destined to become a Death Eater, and he's already seen you around with her, won't that put her and yourself in danger? Considering she's a muggleborn witch?"
Severus rolled his eyes, becoming entirely too annoyed with the whole situation. "Hermione will be safe as long as there is not yet any record of her existence. Aside from the people in this room, and Headmaster Dumbledore, no one else knows of her blood-status. Unless you lot have already told Pettigrew for some god awful reason."
"Of course not!" they all shouted defensively in unison.
"Okay then. There shouldn't be any issue with it then, now will there? Like I told Hermione, if he didn't feel the need to kill me until 1998, he won't kill me now. If I join right on time as I planned to as my older self, after the final piece is destroyed, all I need is to get alone with him one time before Halloween night in 1981.
With your help, Potter, I will be able to escape before any of the others realize who was the culprit." Severus explained; his tone, silky and calculated. "From my experience in my reading of time and space, when one's life is not affected by a time traveler, they will go about their lives as they always would have. Meaning, He is doing the exact same thing right now, as he was in 1977 in Hermione's time. His plans and courses of action, will not change. That being said, it is safe to say, he is none-the-wiser."
The tension in the room seemed to deflate at his words, but Hermione was feeling distressed all over again. Lily handed her Lotus back, and she took him to cuddle him against her chest. He was awake now, and clawing his way up her hospital gown to lay on her shoulder.
"We'd best be going. Some of us are still dumb enough that we can't afford to skip any classes." Lily teased the two of them as she gave Severus' shoulder a light squeeze.
"Yeah... And do let us know when you're feeling up to it, Hermione, and we'll begin right away." James said, giving them a wave as the four of them exited the wing.
Severus watched them go, and then turned to Hermione. "Are you angry with me for this? It's just the only way I can see it going. Can you trust me?"
Hermione nodded without a thought. "I've always trusted you, Severus. But I can still be afraid for you."
He heaved a light sigh as he reached up to cup her cheek. "Please don't be afraid. I promise you, I'll do the right things. No matter what."
