Chapter 11
Walking out of Ollivanders after selling the unicorn hairs to the man, Harry said, snickering, “I'm still not sure if I like him or not. He's a strange one.”
“He always has been,” Severus smirked, hand on Harry's shoulder. “He was that way when I got my wand. I don't think anyone really knows what to make of him most of the time.” Looking down at his son, he asked, “So, what are you going to do with the money? You can spend it how you wish.” They had actually gotten a very tidy sum for the hairs, so he was curious what Harry wanted to do with it.“I wanted to get something nice for everyone,” Harry told him softly, tucking the bag of money in his pocket. “After that, if there's anything left, I'll see what I want to do with it.” This had actually been his plan from the night before for whatever he got from the hairs. In fact, Sirius, who was tending to something at Gringotts, was going to grab Severus' gift when he was done, something they already planned.“You don't have to do that,” Severus told him softly, giving his shoulder a squeeze.“I know, but I want to,” Harry said firmly, looking at him. Grinning, he added, “Sirius is grabbing yours when he's done with whatever it is he's doing. I'm just going to need a little help with a couple of them as I'm not sure what to get them. Plus, I want to get Bugs some new toys and some treats for Hedwig. I would for Tribble, also, but I have no idea what to do there.”“I think, maybe, there are treats for puffskeins. I'm not sure on that, however,” Severus told him. Looking at his son, he said, “We don't need anything, Harry, however, if you want to, that's up to you.” This was another of those confirmations they got once in a while that some of the Mind Healers they dealt with right after Harry's rescue were wrong about him. He wasn't a sociopath that only would think of himself or was destined to be a criminal. Harry honestly cared about those that he would let close. “Who is it you're having issues coming up with something for? I may be able to help there.”“Remus. Well, I want to get him something besides chocolate, as I always do that. Lucius and Miss Cissy,” Harry said with a sigh. Then, grinning a little, he said, “You were easy. I knew what I wanted to get there. The same with Sirius, though his present is a bit selfish.”“Should I panic over whatever you've picked out for me?” Severus asked, eyebrow arched, though amused.“Nope,” Harry told him, looking smug. “You'll like it and it's nothing strange, I promise.”Giving a snort and smirking again, Severus nodded, “Understood. What do you have in mind for Black that you think is selfish?”“I was going to get him that leather duster we saw in the shop where we got my dragon-hide coat. And some nice jeans,” Harry told him grinning slightly sheepishly.Nodding, Severus thought about it then said, slightly confused, “He would like those, but I don't see how they are selfish in any way. What makes you say they are?”“Well, yeah, he'd like them, but I kinda' want to see him in them 'cause he'd look good,” Harry muttered, flushing slightly. Now understanding, Severus nodded then told him, “I don't see that as selfish, Harry. I see that as showing him that you appreciate how he looks.” Smirking, he added, “And I may buy a pair of jeans for Remus for just that reason.”“He wants to see you in some too,” Harry chuckled, grinning again.“I think I can arrange that, too,” Severus replied, smug tone weaving through his voice.“He adores you, but said you two didn't always get along,” Harry observed, looking around to keep an eye on all the people. The alley wasn't busy at this time of day, but there were still plenty around so he was wary.“No, we didn't, especially in school,” Severus admitted. “Even the first few years he taught we didn't. I think, maybe, we both realized that when we were younger we made mistakes, like everyone does when they are teenagers. Once we reconciled that, things began moving in a better direction, one that ended up with us married.” Smirking again, he added, “And most of the students thought I had him under an Imperious when it came out. He was a very popular teacher and they just didn't understand how we ended up together.”“That's because they don't see you together,” Harry told him, looking up at his father as he guided them along. “Because he adores you. And you him.”“They weren't privy to private moments. What they did see, they just misinterpreted as me picking on him,” Severus admitted.“Like how you joke with him? And how you do things to get a laugh?” Harry asked, chuckling.“Exactly like those,” Severus told him, still smirking. “You know what they are as you see them all the time, the students didn't, so they were aghast, thinking I was abusive.”“He knows what it is and if he didn't like it, he would say something,” Harry nodded.“He would and I don't think they realized that. Remus may be mild-mannered about so much, something the students responded to with him, but he's not a doormat. If he doesn't like something, he would tell me,” Severus assured him, steering them towards Flourish and Blotts.“I feel a bit guilty sometimes that you two had to quit teaching because I came along,” Harry admitted softly, glancing around again. “I mean—well, you know. Remus really loved it from what he said. I know you didn't, but it's more of a steady income than what you do now.”“Don't,” Severus told him firmly, looking down at his son. “I hated teaching, Harry. I really did. I like what I do now far better and am happier because of it. With that, I can assure you that I make far more money than I ever did teaching and it's just as stable. Some of the contracts I have are for years and are with big institutions, like St. Mungos, that will be renewed when they end. Those alone pay me far better than teaching ever did. Remus did adore teaching, none of us will deny that, but he's still teaching and very happy with what he does, probably more than he was at Hogwarts.” Seeing his son shoot him a quizzical look, he said, quietly, “He teaches you. And it's something he loves. He also feels it's more rewarding than anything he did at Hogwarts. You respond to him in a way that his students never did. And you want to learn what he teaches. Some of it may be boring and frustrating, but you want to learn.”“He's very good at it,” Harry nodded.“That he is,” Severus agreed. “We both thought it best he take that on because his manner is easier than mine. He excels at teaching someone who has the challenges you do. It's worked out well too.”“I like working with him,” Harry admitted. “I know I have problems with reading, but he makes it easy.” Smiling just a little, he said, lowering his voice, “I like how we do that. We sit on the sofa, with me between his legs, leaning back against him, and read together. Fun stuff, too. It's not like those boring text books. He makes it very easy.”“He enjoys it just as much as you do,” Severus told him softly, the tiniest of smiles on his face. “As do I when we work together. Teaching you is something we both enjoy far more than we ever did teaching at Hogwarts. Black feels the same way.”Leaning against his dad as they walked, Harry smiled. “I like it too.” Quietly, he said, “Remus said you and Sirius really didn't get along, even after he was released. What changed?”Sighing, Severus wasn't sure how to explain that because he wasn't sure himself at times. “I admit that. There are issues even now, we'll both own up to that as well. I think that it was you that managed it. Before Lucius found you, that is. Everyone was still looking for you at that time. Remus was very concerned, obviously, and was helping Black all he could in the search. There were clues, all kinds of them, but they were all false leads. During the summers, Remus spent plenty of time with Black desperately trying to find you. Honestly? I thought you were dead, though, like most, I hoped that what happened was someone desperate for a child had taken you and had given you a loving home. I think, finally, I understood why he was so desperate to find you and began helping. That started it. No, it didn't fix all the issues between us, but it was start. Then, when you were found, it moved it further in the direction you see now because you needed so much help.”“Black wasn't going to be able to do this on his own. Remus was insistent on helping as well, that I understood, so it behooved the both of us to get along because we needed to so we could deal with all the issues there. Thankfully there was an easing in period to help that. Remus and I couldn't just quit at the tail end of the semester, so we taught during the day and came to Malfoy Manor at night, while Grimmauld Place was renovated for all of us, as you know. With as big as the manor is, it helped, a great deal. Honestly? I think the fact you needed so much help overrode rivalries from the past. There are moments still, as I'm sure you know, but we're doing better.”Taking that in, Harry nodded, understanding. Grinning again, he said, “You both have to admit you have a good time poking each other. And it's a laugh riot for the rest of us.”“We get our amusements where and when we can,” Severus admitted, smirking again. “It helps, honestly, because there’s not the viciousness that was there in the past. And we all see it for just what it is.”Thinking that over, Harry understood then nodded. Changing topics, he asked, “So, what do you think I can get the three I mentioned?”“I have an idea for all of them,” Severus assured him, ushering his son into the book store. Glancing around to see who was about, an old habit, he said, pleased he didn't see anyone he recognized or that would cause trouble, “There is a new series of books out that I read a review about in the paper. I think those would be perfect for Remus and would be something he will adore.”“Yeah, he loves to read,” Harry admitted with a nod, allowing his dad to steer him in the direction they needed to go. “I want to get him more than that, though. I mean, yours and Sirius' presents are big.”“I also believe that I know something to go along with it he'll adore. We'll get to that when we get out of here. Narcissa will love the same thing, so we can just get two of them. And Lucius is easy, though I'll have to buy it for you.”“Let me guess; some kind of booze?” Harry grinned as they stopped before a display of books.“Of course,” Severus smirked, grabbing the series of books and showing them to his son. “It's a good vintage of brandy he'll enjoy immensely. You know how he likes that.”“He does!” Harry grinned, looking at the books Severus showed him. Taking one and reading the back, he nodded, “These sound good, the same kind of thing he likes. And the kind we read together. We'll get them.”“He'll enjoy them immensely,” Severus assured him, hand on his shoulder. “I have a couple of books to pick up. Come on, we'll get those then move on to get the jeans and coat before going to the other store I'm thinking about.”Nodding, allowing himself to be guided along, Harry asked, “What kind of thing do you have in mind for Miss Cissy and Remus?”“I believe it'll be easier to show you than explain,” Severus told him, guiding him towards the back where the books he wanted were. “He'll adore it, though, I assure you. So will she. I doubt either of them have anything like it.”“Good! I want to get them something special,” Harry grinned. Changing topics, he began to ask what his dad though he could get Bugs.
Standing at the counter, a man with dark hair was paying for his books. However, he was paying more attention to the two he had just seen than he was to what he was doing. Gathering up the texts and a couple of others Lily wanted, James, in a heavy glamour that would disguise who he was, didn't know what to do. This was the first time he'd seen Harry since that bit right before they were arrested. In fact, he got more of a look at his son than he had then. Swallowing thickly, he didn't know what to do. The books were the last of the things he had to pick up and didn't have anything else to do, so his impulse was to stick around to see his son. That and he wanted to see the interaction with Snape. He hadn't seen much, of course, but what he did didn't seem to mesh with what he had seen of the man so far or what he was like in school. In fact, Snape seemed to treat Harry very nicely. There wasn't any snark or sarcasm in sight. Now, well, he wanted to see more. He just had to be careful about it was all. Not to mention keep in mind the limits of that restraining order because that would yank him back to the allotted distance if he got too close. If it did that, people would notice.
Grabbing his purchases, he went outside then found somewhere to stand where he was far enough away but where he could still see what was going on. Then he waited, trying not to be impatient. It wasn't long before Snape and Harry emerged, carrying a couple of packages themselves. Trailing along as they went somewhere else, he kept an eye on them, trying to ensure that it didn't look like he was following. After all, he didn't want them to notice. While doing that, he observed what was going on between the two closely. That confused him.Snape had his hand on Harry's shoulder all the time, or so it seemed, but it wasn't in a harsh or possessive manner. Instead, it appeared to be something gentle. In fact, the man would give a squeeze or reach up to give Harry's head a rub here and there. Harry didn't appear miserable either. Instead, he was smiling or laughing, occasionally leaning over against Snape as he did. And they were just talking, about all kinds of things. Whatever questions Harry had, Snape would answer without the sarcasm he knew from the man. He even took time to explain parts when Harry didn't understand something. That—he didn't expect that. Remus, yeah, he would. After all, his old friend was good with everyone and had a soothing manner, despite what he was. Snape didn't do this shite.Leaning against the side of a building, staying in the shadows, while the two went into a clothing store, he looked down at the ground, arms folded over his chest as he thought about it. Shaking his head, he didn't know what to make of this, honestly. Harry, from what he saw, was completely relaxed around him too, not seeming at all apprehensive or on edge. In fact, what he saw told him that he was at ease with Snape, going so far as to call him Severus, something Snape didn't say a word about.Sighing, he looked up and waited, not sure what to do. No, he shouldn't be following them, that he knew, but he wanted to see his son and understand so much of what they were told in that meeting. When Snape and Harry came out of the store, he trailed along again, more curious than ever about what was going on.
Leading Harry into a small curio shop, Severus guided him to where some picture frames were. Picking the one off the shelf he was thinking about, he held it out to his son then explained, “Not only is it one that you can enlarge to any size you want, but you can put all the pictures in it you feel like then it'll cycle through them randomly. I thought Remus might like that to put all the pictures of you in. The same with Narcissa. You know how she adores such items.”
Looking it over, Harry gave a vigorous nod, “I like it! Good idea! Thanks! We'll do this.”Smirking, pleased, Severus said, “Let's find the colors that will fit the décor and we'll get them. I'm sure it's something both will greatly appreciate.”After finding what he thought were the perfect colors, Harry looked up as the bell over the door rang. He grinned when he saw Sirius. Waving to him, he passed the two frames over to his dad carefully, making sure he didn't break them. “I think those will go well, don't you?”Looking them over, Severus gave a slow nod, “I believe so, yes. We'll go with these. They should be perfect.”Coming over to the two, Sirius slipped an arm around Harry then looked at what Snape was holding. “Who are those for?”“One is for Miss Cissy and one is for Remus,” Harry said, leaning back against Sirius. Looking up at him, he grinned then asked, “Were you able to get the present?”“I was,” Sirius grinned back, chuckling.“Good! Let me know what it cost when we get home and I'll give it to you.”Though arching an eyebrow at the two and wondering what they were talking about, Severus shook his head then led the two towards the cashier. “I'm worried,” he stated in a flat tone, though he was smirking as he did.“You'll love it, I promise,” Harry grinned.“You will,” Sirius nodded. “I take it you got a good bit from the hairs?” He asked Harry.“I did,” Harry told him with a pleased grin. “Even with all we've gotten, I've got plenty left.”“Good! Where do we still have to go?” He asked as Harry paid for the two frames.“Just to the pet store and then to get Lucius some booze,” Harry chuckled, taking the package from the clerk.“And if he heard you call it that, he would give you a lecture on alcoholic beverages again,” Severus told him, completely amused, as he put a hand on his shoulder once more, guiding his son outside.Laughing, Harry nodded, “I know! To me, booze is booze. It just comes in different flavors.”Grinning at that, slipping an arm back around Harry and holding him close, Sirius shook his head. “You're still a riot, Harry.”“It's the truth!” Harry grinned, leaning against his dad as he felt him give his shoulder a squeeze. “I don't get the need for fancy names for it. That's just me though.”“And this from the person that used to drink the cheapest and skunkiest beer made,” Severus smirked, looking down at his son. “At least that's improved.”“Yeah, okay, you're right about the taste, I admit that,” Harry grinned while nodding. “The stuff you lot buy tastes much better. And, as I've said before, I wasn't worried about the taste. Besides, I like butterbeer more!”“Which is good,” Severus admitted, leading them along.
Standing in the shadows, James watched the three trek away, not following this time. With Sirius and Snape, both along, it was best not to. As sharp-eyed as the both of them were, one was going to eventually spot him. Though the glamour should hide him well enough, he didn't want to chance it. It was better if he left it here and went home. Besides, he wanted to think about what he saw. Not only was there the bit with Snape, something that was really confusing him, but now Sirius. The ease Harry showed around the two, not to mention the closeness, was something he needed to think about. It was confusing. Oh, he didn't like it, that was for damned sure, especially when it came to Sirius, knowing the relationship was a romantic and sexual one, but there was something there that he needed to think about. Especially after the way Harry was described to him in that meeting. Plus, he wanted to talk this over with Lily. She always helped him see things straight.
Glancing in the direction the three went, he sighed, wanting to keep right on following, but didn't. Instead, he made sure that everything was tucked away then Apparated home.
Looking over the crystal cauldron stirrers, Severus gave a pleased nod. These were wonderful! Not only were they sturdy enough to withstand anything, they had a self-cleaning spell on them that automatically activated. Looking at Harry, he said, “Thank you, Harry, these are most appreciated.”
“I thought you might like those when I saw them,” Harry told him with a pleased grin. “Remus said they would be handy.”“They will be,” Severus told him with a firm nod.“Alright, I was worried about what you picked out, but this coat is the shite,” Sirius grinned, holding up the coat to look at it. “The same with the jeans.” Slipping an arm around Harry, he pulled him close and kissed him on the temple. “Thanks!”“You'll look dead sexy in them,” Harry told him, making sure to keep his voice down and grinning sheepishly.Chuckling at that, Sirius said, “Thanks!”“The books and frame—they are wonderful!” Remus said, smiling at his son as he loaded the frame with all kinds of pictures. “I'm putting the frame up in the family room. It's perfect for that. I appreciate them.”“Glad you like them. Severus helped me pick them out,” Harry admitted. Quietly, he asked, “The books—can we read them together like we do others? They sound good.”“I would like that very much,” Remus told him, smiling bigger. Looking at his husband, he said, quietly, “And thanks for the jeans, Severus. They are very nice.” Chuckling, he added, “I can't wait to see you in yours either.”Looking smug, Severus said, “I'll try them on later. Glad you appreciate them.”“Did you send Lucius and Miss Cissy's off?” Harry asked, looking between the three.“I sent them with Hedwig not long after we got home,” Sirius assured him. “I also made damned sure that they were padded and won't break. They should have them by now.”“Good,” Harry nodded, happy with this. All along, well, before he was rescued, he thought the greatest feeling in the world was to get presents, even if they weren't much and were just from someone that wanted something from him. That was probably more pronounced because he had almost nothing in the world to call his own. Now, though, he realized differently. It felt better to give something to someone, especially because they were special to you and genuinely appreciated whatever it was you gave them. It felt better than anything else in the world. That he liked, the reason he wanted to do this. Plus, well, for all they did for him, he wanted to do something very special for them, something that they could keep and use. He liked this.Looking around, he asked, “So, are we planning anything for tonight or going anywhere?”“We thought,” Remus started as he slid the last of the pictures into the frame, “that we would take tonight to play some games. Severus said he'd go out to grab us some food and we'd just spend the night alone having fun.” Looking at the frame after he activated it with his wand, he smiled. “This is wonderful,” he said again, watching various pictures of all of them cycle through.“I'd like that,” Harry grinned, nodding.“Let's decide what we want to eat then we'll go from there,” Severus said, pushing the stirrers aside. Looking around, he suggested, “Since we had pizza only a few days ago, I think something else might be a good idea. Any ideas on that?” This pleased him. Not only was Harry allowing normal activities to take place without too much extra apprehension, but he was going with the flow. That meant, maybe, they could keep going without a major setback. All he hoped was Albus and Potter didn't pull some foolish stunt to derail this.
