Chapter 12
“We have many things to cover tonight,” Albus said firmly, glancing around the kitchen table at the Burrow. “Before we start, I need to ask if the wards are up so no one outside this room can hear. Though I understand that the others in the house are of legal age now, I want some of what I'm going to cover to go no further. And to allow them to keep their childhood just a little longer. Some of what we will discuss aren't areas we need to expose them to yet.”
“It's warded the best we can get it,” Arthur confirmed with a nod. “While the kids know there's a meeting tonight, something I'm sure they'll try to eavesdrop on, they were also told as firmly as we could that it's a small one and needs kept private.”
“Good,” Albus sighed with a pleased nod. Shuffling the parchments in front of him, he pressed on, “We have several items to cover, all of which need to stay within the confines of this room. They are dangerous to not only ourselves if leaked out, but to others as well.” Seeing grave nods, he moved to the first item to cover, “To start—I've begun the process of buying Grimmauld Place. The three that live there have found a home they are in the middle of purchasing. From what Arthur was told, by the time they are ready to venture out, it'll be ready and they'll move. We'll then move in there. As Remus spent the last year renovating, we can also use it as a safehouse if we need to. That's perfect for us, in many ways. It's just going to take time for the paperwork to go through and the three to be able to handle the stress of moving. It's my hope that within a month we should be able to relocate there. While the they may not be ready to venture into public, they should be able to handle moving. Once they are relocated, Remus will shift the Fidelius over to me and we can take up occupancy.”
“Good,” Moody gruffed with a pleased nod. “Are they going to need help moving or do they have something in place? We can lend a hand, of course. It won't take us long to tend to that matter.”
“They have two house elves that will handle that,” Arthur assured him. “We won't need to do a thing. Once the initial paperwork is complete, they're having the goblins contract someone to go in to do the upgrades and renovations they want. So, by the time they're ready, everything will be in place.” Lowering his voice, though he knew that no one outside the room could hear him, he told everyone, “They are as anxious to be out of that house as we are to get in. Not only is there the issue with Sirius and the memories of the place, something I'm sure isn't helping at the moment, but the fact that Narcissa Malfoy knows just where it is. They have everything in place they can get to help keep watch, but they know how dangerous it might end up.”
“Arthur will know their new address, but most of us won't,” Albus explained, looking around. “That is easily understandable. If one of us has to go there, Remus will pick them up and sidealong them so the whereabouts is kept secret. They are even paying extra to ensure that the physical address is kept secret and are going so far as to hire goblin wardmasters to lay on every bit of protection they can. We are going to stay away unless necessary to give them every bit of help we can to keep it a secret.” Seeing knowing nods, he shuffled the parchments he was holding and continued on to the next matter.
“Tonight after the meeting, Arthur is taking me over to Grimmauld Place. I'm going to perform the spell to seal the bond further. It's all our hopes that this will not only help with the multitude of issues they are having readjusting, but cut down on the amount of time they need to stay locked away. If it works, it can be a big help.” Albus explained.
“How long before anyone knows if it worked?” Molly asked, looking at Albus. She was, like all her children and Hermione, anxious to see Harry again. Oh, she knew he was safe, but it wasn't the same as seeing him, beyond the pictures that had been in the paper.
“I don't know,” Albus sighed, shaking his head sadly. “What I'm hoping is it'll cut almost a month off the time. We can't judge. We do know it'll stabilize what's there. Even if it does that minimally, it'll be a huge help in cutting down on what they are dealing with. All we can do is wait and judge from there.” Looking around, he added, tone gentle, “What I can tell you is not to expect this to improve the issues on Harry's end. We are looking more at it working for Sirius and, to a lesser extent, Remus. Harry's issues, from all we know, are going to manifest when he had to start dealing with people again. Even those he knows well. Arthur can attest to the fact that he is having those already around him. It'll be more exaggerated when he has to go back to dealing with others. It will take time and work for him to get to a place where he can do that again. I want all of us to be aware of that. Also for everyone to keep in mind that even though this is being done to stabilize things on Sirius' end, setting Harry off in some way will do so for Sirius and probably Remus as well. Some of that, no matter what we do, will not go away. Keep that in mind.” Finishing, his gaze lit on the dour looking Severus, hoping the man got the point he was trying to make, though he doubted it would fully sink in until something happened to drive it home in another way.
Moving to the next topic, he explained, “Harry is now an Animagus. I've managed to use some influence and go through Rufus to make sure that the description of his form is kept a secret. I also did the same for Sirius. Though Padfoot is well known enough that it might not help with that end, Harry's needs kept quiet at all costs. This is to protect him. I'm sure we all understand that. So, in the future, if you do see his Animagus, say nothing and keep in mind it staying a secret is one of the best things we can do to help him stay safe.”
“A stag is rather tell-tale, Albus,” Severus snorted, shaking his head. It was common knowledge that your Animagus form was the same as your Patronus. The minute there was a stag cantering around, people were going to know it was Potter.
“It's not a stag,” Arthur said quietly, shaking his head. “In fact, it's not a form anyone would think of when it comes to Harry. There is very little there that would lean you to thinking that's who it is. It wasn't until he changed back that I realized what the one hint was. And it's perfect for him to hide in.”
“Arthur is correct,” Albus nodded. Quietly, he added, “I very much doubt Harry now has a stag for a Patronus anymore. The bond probably changed that form like it does so many others when they marry, bond or whatever. Which is good and won't be telling, something else that can only help.”
“Right,” Albus said, jumping to the next matter, “something for communication as we discussed. This actually comes from Remus and Sirius. They've offered up something that is perfect, for all of us. Arthur picked it up from them yesterday and I took it to Filius. He does know what we're going to use it for and is working on not only duplicating it, but seeing if he can't improve what it does. From what he told me, he'll have something for us in a couple of weeks that's workable. Then he'll see what else he can manage with modifications. When he's done, I'll get it from him and ensure all Order members, save a couple that I don't feel can be trusted with it, have one and we're all keyed in. Unlike the Patronus, this is an instantaneous form of communication. I do want to impress on everyone, as with the Patronus, that it's for emergencies only or for communications that can't be done safely any other way. We're going to make certain Sirius, Remus and Harry have them as well. All of us are to keep them on our person at all times, save Severus, for obvious reasons.”
“What is it?” Kingsley asked, intrigued. They had tried to come up with something besides the Patronus for some time now, but no one had managed.
“Mirrors,” Albus said with a smile, smoothing down his beard. “It's my understanding that they are something James and Sirius came up with in school to talk while they were in separate detentions. They are perfect for what we need. All you do is call the name of the person you want to talk to and when they appear, you talk. This is just what we need.”
“Utterly ingenious,” Tonks said, hair going bright pink as she nodded. “Far safer than the Patronus.”
“Exactly,” Arthur said, nodding. “They showed me just how they worked and it's what we need. As long as we can modify it to where it won't look odd for us to carry them around, it'll be a huge help in so many areas.”
“That's one of the things Filius plans to do,” Albus assured him. Chortling, he added, “And he was most intrigued and excited by them, much the same way he was about the Portable Swamp. He said he'll manage, just give him some time.”
“Remus and Sirius, both, told me yesterday when I was over there, they have some other 'toys', as they called them, that might help us. They are seeing what they can manage with them to convert them slightly. Once they do, they'll let us know.” Chuckling, he added, “They said just so no one sells the template.”
“With all those two helped to accomplish in school, I'm sure they have plenty up their sleeves,” Minerva said with a fond smile.
“As am I,” Albus agreed with an amused sound. Pressing on, he broached the next issue. “On to the part with the Dursleys—Tonight I'm going to talk to them about it and see what we can manage there. While what we're doing is working, it won't last forever. We need a more permanent solution. I have a basic plan in place for this. Remus told Arthur yesterday that Harry also has something that can help. Once I hear what it is, we’ll see what kind of plan we can formulate to deal with this then implement it. It probably won't be for a couple of weeks before we can do anything, of course, but we can lay the foundation for it.”
“We need this soonest, Albus,” Severus told him gruffly, looking at the man. “The Dark Lord is already talking about them.”
“I know,” Albus admitted with a sigh, shaking his head. “They are in no shape to brave the outside, Severus. That would set off a chain of events none of us want to deal with. Keep in mind, it's less than a week since the visit with them that set Remus off. They all may be progressing, but I doubt it's enough to tackle an issue that's bound to cause problems anyway. Until they are, we'll do what we can.” Seeing nods, he looked at the final two items on his list then gave a heavy sigh.
Glancing at Severus, he asked, “Is there any way you can see to get young Mr. Malfoy to back off his bragging and vows? That was what caused the problems. If it set Remus off, it's bound to have set Sirius off as well. We don't need a complicated situation made even worse by a young man that doesn't have any idea what hell he will rain down on himself.”
Scrubbing a hand over his face, Severus groaned then told him dourly, “No. There's nothing. It's my understanding, from some tidbits that have been said around me, that even Narcissa is trying to get him to shut his mouth on the topic. I'm not sure what that's about, but she's mentioned to me trying to talk to him about it again. There is something there—something she knows, but isn't saying, that seems to frighten her. And I don't think it's the Dark Lord. Oh, I'm sure that factors in as he would have no problem sacrificing Draco to this nightmare, something she has to know. No, it's something else. I just don't have an inkling what it might be.”
Brow furrowed as he thought it over, Albus said, “See what you can find out. And try to talk to him. With the state Sirius is in, not to mention the bond, if he tries something foolish, neither of those two will hold back against him. No one would expect them to either. I don't want to give up just what is going on there, though I'm sure it'll come out, but you may have to explain some of the issues. At least the barest bones of it.”
“It won't work,” Severus snorted, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. “Draco is—he's not going to listen, Albus. He's now in full temper tantrum mode because he's suffering a punitive punishment over what he did in school. Like always, he thought himself above such matters and that Lucius' influence would get him out of the mess. This time it's even worse than normal as there is nothing Lucius can do to mitigate the steps we took. That has him enraged. And he blames Potter for it, as infantile as that sounds. So, that's where he's going to focus.”
“Someone needs to make him see sense,” Minerva said firmly, hands clasped on the table in front of her. Shaking her head, she added, “Sirius alone is not someone Draco will come out on top of a fight with. Even Lucius would have his work cut out for him. Then that would end up in a draw, with both plenty injured. Remus is no slouch either. Draco may not see it that way because he couldn't get over how he dressed, but he is just as good. Not to mention he's the one that's more likely to keep his head in a fight. And, despite what Draco might think, Harry is more than a match for him. Put all three of them together then add in that bond and Draco won't come out of it alive.”
“And there is nothing in my repertoire I can use to get that across to him,” Severus snarled, scrubbing a hand over his face. “He is just acting like the spoiled little boy all of us know he is. All he sees is a chance to elevate his own status up to where his father's is. You can't make him see sense! I'll try, but I hold out no hope that this will work. Until someone, somewhere, slaps him with reality, Draco Malfoy is a lost cause and nothing can be done. And, if it keeps going this way, and he truly plans to try to take on Potter to either kill him or turn him over, he's a walking dead brat. Black and Lupin will take him apart. I don't see either of them considering his age if he tries this stunt, not with that bond. He doesn’t get that either. I think, maybe, somewhere in him he thinks his age is going to give him a free pass to get away with whatever he wants. In this case, it's not, especially since he's less than a month away from his majority. Either the Dark Lord will focus there and assign him to do it or he's going to take one very foolish misstep then will be taken apart by two people that won't put up with him or his stunts. I truly fear which one is going to come first.”
Sighing, looking old, Albus shook his head. “I just don't know anything that can help, Severus. We've done all I can come up with on topic. Nothing's worked. If someone else has a suggestion that might at least give us a hand, we'll be more than willing to listen to it.”
“You said Aunt Cissy is worried about something? Or it seems that way?” Tonks asked, looking at Severus, brow creased.
“Yes,” Severus reaffirmed with a nod. Confused, he asked, “Why?”
Looking down at the table, a pensive look on her face, Tonks said, “Let me talk to mum to see what she says. From what I know of Aunt Cissy, You-Know-Who doesn't bother her much because of Aunt Bella and Uncle Lucius. He's a problem, obviously, but not a big one. There has to be something else there that's bothering her.”
Listening in, Albus asked, intrigued, “Any idea what it might be?”
“Only how it might relate,” Tonks sighed and shrugged, looking at him.
“Related in what way?” Minerva asked, not understanding where this might be coming from.
“Sirius,” Tonks said, looking around. “You need to realize that Sirius is the head of the House of Black. There is plenty he can do if he wants to. If Aunt Cissy is worried, I'm betting it relates to that. She might be married to Lucius, but if Sirius gets mad enough, he can pull out plenty to make her life miserable. Just what I don't know, which is why I want to talk to mum.” Shaking her head, she explained, “Before he couldn't do anything. He was a wanted criminal. I doubt he would have chanced trying anything. He's not anymore, which means there are probably plenty of things he can manage to make her life a living hell if he wants to. Let's face it, he was raised the same way mum was. Even if he thinks all that Pureblood nonsense is twaddle doesn't mean he can't use it, or won't. He has to know just what he's doing because he's a man. All men, no matter what, had that junk drilled into their head from the time they were young. Even Sirius. Just because he doesn't pay any attention to it and doesn't seem to care, doesn't mean he doesn't remember it.”
Seeing several interested and intrigued looks, Albus gave a slow nod. “Talk to Andromeda and see what she knows. I'll gather a few sources and start looking as well. If Narcissa is worried, it might mean we have something we can use, for many things. If we can't, Sirius might be able to at some point. Let's see what's there before we start counting the dragon eggs.” Seeing nods, he pressed on.
Sighing, Albus said, looking around, “We're now to the part I desperately need everyone to keep quiet. Even Order members that aren't present aren't to be filled in on what I'm going to show you or that you'll hear. And I'm warning you now, what you're about to see and hear is disgusting.” Seeing nods with plenty of wary looks thrown in his direction, he levitated a bag onto the table then magically extracted the diary from Harry's second year and the locket Molly found in Kreacher's belongings. Both were destroyed, of course, but you could still feel some of the malevolence oozing off of them. Looking around, he said, “These were both something called a Horcrux before they were destroyed. And they aren't the only ones out there. There was one other, but it's been tended to as well. Which means, if we truly want this fight to end, we need to find the rest and get rid of them.” Slowly, he began to walk everyone through the darkest chunk of magic Tom had ever performed.
When he finished, he shook his head, taking in the sick looks. “I didn't want to burden anyone here with the knowledge of just what was done in the name of immortality, but we're now faced with finding the others. One I may have an inkling as to where it is, but it'll be the one we have to tend to last.” Seeing plenty look like they were going to ask, he said, “Nagini. I'm sure that Tom made her into one. The snake is the one we will have to take on last. She'll be the hardest to get to. Which means we have to find the others. I believe there are two. In order for this fight to end and weaken Tom enough to do away with him, we have to destroy them. That is the issue. I'm not sure what they are or where they may be hidden. All I have are clues. Which means I need everyone's help in tracking them down.” Seeing nods, he pressed on, giving up all the clues he had on the whereabouts of the two objects and what they might be.
Planted in a chair in the bedroom they shared, with Harry curled up in his lap, head resting on his shoulder and eyes shut, Sirius held him close. Remus was right beside them, making damned sure that all three of them were touching. Albus had left not ten minutes before after sealing the bond and discussing what they wanted to do about the Dursleys. That had, of course, set off a nightmare for him and Harry. He had kept it under control the best he could, of course, but it had been there and not at all fun to deal with.
Holding up Harry's arm, he looked at the bond mark, pleased with what he saw. The colors were now as vibrant as they could get and the animals in the mark moved on their own in a way that seemed in accordance to what they were feeling. At the moment, the wolf was pressed up against the small puppy, licking his ears, while the giant dog was curled around the two of them protectively. That mirrored what they were all dealing with.
Putting Harry's arm down and holding the stressed out young man close, he sighed after taking a sip of his beer, “We've got it sealed. This should help, at least some. We'll see how much, though. If it works on my end and calms the urges, I can press on working with the other bits.”
“It should,” Remus told him, relaxing the best he could, rubbing Harry's back softly as he did. “We need to start working with the both of you to get this under control. As soon as that house is ready, we need to get out of here to make sure we all stay safe.”
“Let's see what we can manage,” Sirius sighed, clutching the still silent Harry close. Though he hadn't liked having Albus around, as he seemed to set off plenty of problems because of his power, Harry had fared the worst. The whole time Albus was here, Harry stayed quiet and refused to look at anyone, keeping his eyes lowered. That told him there was plenty he had to work with Harry on before they could even think about venturing out again. If Harry couldn't function normally and stand up for himself without looking to him or Remus for what they would allow, he wouldn't be able to defend himself properly. That they didn't need. “I'll start working this week to see what the two of us can come up with to help. We'll find something, it just might take a bit to manage it.”
Nodding to let Sirius know he heard, Remus changed topics, figuring that would help to calm the problems already there. “Explain to me this bit about the lean mo, or whatever it is, and how it relates to the Dursleys.”
“Limo,” Harry corrected softly, not opening his eyes, still clinging to Sirius. “It's a big, expensive car. The kind of thing that celebrities are chauffeured around in. To ride around in that means you have money, a lot of it, as they are expensive to rent one for even a day. Showing up in that is going to get their attention, fast. In fact, they'll want it seen by the whole neighborhood to put on airs and look impressive. If we do that, we have their attention right off the bat. Then we can do what we need. It's going to drive home the point quickly. We can then be in and out without the use of magic.”
Thinking that over, Sirius gave a slow nod. “Right, we'll do that. Albus can make damned sure that everyone is close, but we'll turn up that way. Remus and I'll snarl then we get the hell out of there. We just—we can’t at the moment. We need at least another week or so before I even want to chance this. Let Albus come up with a way to figure out how to do this while we get settled. As long as he can make it damned fast, we'll manage. Just—he needs to make it damned clear and have plenty there so that they don't start on Harry. They do that, we have a fight coming.”
“He knows,” Remus soothed, reaching over and putting a hand on Sirius' knee then giving it a squeeze. “From what he said, he seems to know just how bad this is and what can come of the reaction if someone tries something foolish. Let him handle that end. We do what we need to and get out, nothing more.”
“Nothing ever turns out that easy, Remus,” Sirius said with a dry snort and shake of his head. “Ever. We'll deal accordingly, though. Just not right now. Let's see how fast we can get some bits settled and go from there.” Downing the last of his beer, he vanished the bottle then groaned. “Alright, let's get some sleep. I'm tired. Tomorrow we'll work with more of this mess and see what we can start.” Groaning, he urged Harry to stand so they could all get ready for bed. Because of the stress, they were plenty tired, so they needed sleep before even starting to figure out what to do to work on bits of this nightmare.
