Chapter 12
Watching Lucius pace, Remus leaned back in his chair and crossed his legs, waiting to see what the man had to say. Oh, he knew the general topic, of course, but wanted to know where he would hone in. While waiting, his mind played back over the meeting they just had, trying to sort through much of what was there. While they knew plenty from Bill, the others had things to say they didn't. That meant he had to add that to what they knew and meld it all together to get the whole picture. Even then, he was sure they didn't have that. Harry, Bill, Charlie, Fred and George knew many things they didn't still, something he was sure would factor in to the mess, though maybe not this area.
Stopping, staring at the floor, Lucius huffed, “We—I don't know what to make of this, Remus, and it gives me a heavy feeling of foreboding.”“I think it does all of us,” Remus admitted quietly. Shaking his head, he added, “I don't think we know everything either. There is no proof of that, mind you, it's just a feeling. It's my thought that whatever the ones that have been involved in this mess with Harry know factors in heavily.”“What do you mean?” Lucius asked, glancing at him, brow furrowed.“I do believe that they might not see it, though they have the pieces we can slide together if we know what they do,” Remus told him, looking at the floor, brow drawn down as he pieced together what they knew so far.“In what way? I'm not sure I follow,” Lucius told him honestly, hoping he would lay it out so they could work from there.“We know what they do on the issue with their family. What we haven't covered is the issues with Albus and what they know there. From all we've been told, there is plenty there. Even Sirius doesn't know that piece of this. With how Albus is when it comes to Harry, I'm sure it's involved in some way. How? That's the question.” Remus sighed, glancing at Lucius.Troubled, Lucius asked, “Any hints, from what you know of the situation or have put together, as to what it might involve?”“I think, maybe, it's all tied in, Lucius,” Remus told him with a sigh and shake of his head. Seeing Lucius motion for him to go on, obviously wanting an explanation of his line of thinking, he continued, “We all know what Albus is like with Harry. Since I've been aware of the situation, Albus has had what can only be termed a tight leash on what he 'allows' people to do when it comes to Harry, who can step in and whatnot. You weren't around, but Sirius can back that up easily. The only ones he's ever allowed an almost free rein with are the Weasleys. I don't mean what Bill and the rest are talking about, though, as they made it clear that what they did was behind everyone's back. They made it very clear it involved keeping it a secret from everyone but the five of them involved. I get that part of that comes from Molly. It's my thought that they did that to also keep it from Albus. They haven't said as much outright, but it gives the inkling that factors in. Which tells me that they may know something. I also think that they may not have the whole picture of why they had to do that. It may be a case of they are caught in the middle and don't see the whole situation clearly.” Stopping, he waited to see what Lucius had to say on the topic.Folding his arms over his chest, Lucius looked down at the floor, foot starting to tap, as he thought that over. Giving a slow nod after a couple of minutes, he said, “It may. On the surface, it makes sense. From what I know of the situation, Albus would have had kneazles if anyone else had pulled some of the stunts with Harry that the Weasleys have.”“Which means we need to get the full scope of what they know when it comes to the situation where it deals with Albus. Bill and Harry, both, have said there is more there. I don't have a clue what it might be. We have pieces, but it's not enough to work with or put together.” Remus admitted, shaking his head.“Which means we need to get what they know. And I think it has to come quickly. For us to completely understand the full scope of what this involves, something I'm sure will affect more than just Harry, we need that information,” Lucius told him, voice sounding distracted as he thought it over.“I also think to get the full grasp we need what Severus knows,” Remus added softly, looking back at Lucius. Seeing the man look at him, he added, “It's my feeling that Severus may know plenty that can help us piece all of this together. Harry, Bill, Charlie, Fred and George might know parts as they were in the middle, but I would bet my wand Severus knows plenty from his end as well. We both know that Albus talks to him quite a lot on many topics that relates to this mess because of his role as a spy. Because of that role, he had to have information to know what he needed to keep a listen for so he could sort through so much.”“Very true,” Lucius sighed. Groaning, his eyes slid shut and his head dropped back. “And I'm not sure what we can do to get it out of Severus. He's no longer spying, but I'm not sure he'll give it up either because of what's involved.”“We need to know,” Remus reiterated. “Maybe you can take the lead in seeing what you can manage. After all, you know him better than the rest of us and might be able to convince him in a way the rest of us can't.”“I may,” Lucius admitted with a nod. “Let me see what I can manage on that front. Severus can be difficult to work with. He needs handled with kid gloves to manage anything.”“Do you know why he's spying? I do get that part of it is that it's the right thing to do. He has to want this to stop as much as the rest of us. It's just a feeling that there is more to it than that. And I can also pretty much guarantee that he's not aware of so much either. Albus keeps what he knows and his reasons close to the vest and only gives up what he has to. Part of that, I'm sure, is to protect so much so that it can't leak out then, possibly, get back to the other side. We know that some talk too much. I can think of one name that would do that when it comes to those in the Order. I'm also equally as sure that there is plenty he doesn't want the rest of us to know for various reasons. And I don't think that has anything to do with protecting information from leaking out. It's my thought it has to do with something he's keeping secret for plenty of reasons and doesn't want us to know.” Stopping, he sighed and looked down then added, quietly, “I would bet anything that it has to do with Harry.”Staring at Remus, shaking his head, Lucius then groaned. “Bloody hell.” A determined look sliding onto his face, he then said, “I'll get it out of Severus. Whatever it takes I will. We need to know what he does!” Groaning, he added, “I'm just not sure how to go about that. I'll manage, just give me time.”“I honestly don't think we have a lot of that, Lucius,” Remus admitted softly.“True,” Lucius conceded with a groan, rubbing a hand over his face. “We'll manage, between the two of us. I say we get with the others first to see what they have to say. If we do that, we might manage to come up with a way to have better leverage when it comes to Severus.”“He has to sit in for part of it,” Remus reminded him. “If Fred and George are there, he'll be as well.”“Another true point,” Lucius conceded with a reluctant nod. “I vote we keep those three out of this until we have to bring them in. I'm sure the twins know plenty as they were in school with Harry, but we get with the rest first then go from there. If we go about it that way, we might have something in the way of leverage with Severus.”After thinking that over, Remus agreed, “We'll go about it that way. I think we need to set this up quickly, Lucius. We all have a lot on our plates, I know, and more keeps being piled on, but I think this 'backstory', if you will, is going to factor in, heavily. I also think that's going to end up pulling plenty of us in, even though Sirius, Harry and Bill are the main ones affected.”Pondering that, Lucius sighed, “An assessment I'll agree with as well. Let's get with the three just mentioned as soon as we can to see what they know. We'll then go from there to see what we need to do.”“I'm going to say not today. Give everyone a chance to cool down from the 'meeting'. I'll see what I can manage tomorrow. It's something I think you and I need to take on alone with them,” Remus said, shaking his head.“Another suggestion I'll agree with, both of them,” Lucius said, coming over to take a seat next to him. With a sigh, he shook his head, “This—we all need a day off soon, I think. I know Narcissa said something about finding a relaxing activity for all of us, but I feel we need more than that. Since this mess started, we've all been so focused on what is here that we haven't relaxed. We won't even get into how hard it was to start down the road to adjusting. Maybe we need to arrange that, soonest.”Thinking it over, though it didn't take long, Remus then nodded. “Agreed. We'll pass the word around today when it comes to that and arrange for the day after tomorrow as one where we just do something to relax. The elves should have most of the living quarters done by then, so we can tend to decorating and other bits dealing with it. That should help.”“A sound suggestion we all need to take,” Lucius told him, pleased. That was something to look forward to and he would relish in taking on. Leaning back in his chair, crossing his ankles, he asked, “Any idea of a style you would like our rooms decorated with?”Snorting and smiling, Remus told him, “As long as it's comfortable, I don't much care. We'll find something we both like.”Taking that in, Lucius thought it over then began to make suggestions.
After a glance around the table, Narcissa sighed then shook her head. “Nothing dramatic happened last night, from what all of you said, which leads us right back to what we are sure is the issue; something mental. Do any of you know if there was something big that happened, like with the shower bit or something else?” Stopping, she looked between Bill, Harry and Sirius, waiting to see what they said.
“Everything was normal last night,” Sirius told her honestly. “Nothing we haven't done before happened.”“In fact, up until bedtime, we had the tether you knew about yesterday,” Bill added with a shrug. “So, I have no idea what happened to lengthen it.”“We're back to mental.” Narcissa sighed, tapping the nib of her quill on the parchment before her on the table. “Did any of you have a shift in what you were thinking? That or, maybe, an acceptance of something that wasn't there before?” Seeing Bill and Sirius shake their heads, she then focused on Harry. Seeing an odd look on his face, she asked, gently, “From you, Harry? Anything at all? Even if it's small?”Looking down, arms folded over his chest, Harry sighed then said, softly, “Maybe.”Seeing Bill put a hand on Harry's shoulder and giving it a reassuring squeeze, then Sirius slipping an arm around him, Narcissa smiled then assured him, “As always, my word the personal details go no further. And there is no making fun. It can help everyone, Harry.” Then she waited.Looking between the two on either side of him, seeing nods from them, Harry slumped slightly then explained, very quietly, “We kinda', since this started, sleep with Bill on one side of me and Sirius on the other, pressed against each other. Last night, before falling asleep, I was thinking that for the first time in my life I feel completely safe. No one in their right mind is going to mess with me with the two close. That and I like it. Bill and Sirius, separately, have always done their best to protect me. They just couldn't always be around to stop so much. Which resulted in the messes that happened. Now, though, that won't happen anymore. That makes me feel safe. And I like it. It feels great.” That's where he stopped, flushing slightly as he wasn't used to talking about personal bits like this.Smiling as Bill put a hand on the back of Harry's head, giving it a rub then Sirius grinning and giving his godson a squeeze, Narcissa smiled. “I bet that's the reason. Two of you in this have accepted what's going on more. And I can honestly say, from someone that's been mostly on the outside of what's gone on, I can understand why you feel that way. It has to help, plenty.” That's where she stopped, brow furrowed. Thinking as something was trying to click, she thought about it then summoned an elf. When the creature popped up, she sent it off for the notes on the reactions to the bond marks when touched. Quietly, voice quivering slightly, she said, “I think I have something.”Seeing the look on Cissy's face, Sirius asked, “What? Do you know?” He hoped this was a bigger breakthrough than they had. Oh, the small bits did help, that's for damned sure, but they needed something bigger.Reaching over and grabbing Harry's arm, she hesitantly touched the mark. As had happened before, the reaction was there. Wincing slightly, she shook her hand but grinned just a little as she did. “I have it! At least I think I do!”“What?” Bill asked, decidedly curious.Taking the notes from the elf, she quickly flipped through them about all the reactions. “It's what Harry said that triggered it.” Finding what she needed, she quickly read through it, nodding as she did. “The reactions, all of them—it fits.” Looking up and glancing at the three, smiling bigger, she said, “The reaction from your bondmark is a combination of two things; like being too close to a curse of some kind, the burning sensation from one, and a bite. Sirius is an Animagus, a dog. The bite. Bill is a Curse Breaker. The stinging from a curse. You are both the stronger of the bonded and are the ones that have always protected Harry. It's your symbolism that is the reaction. It holds for the others as well. The biting sensation from Lucius and Remus'. Remus being a werewolf. Lucius is the one that needs the most protection because of the danger he's in. Draco and Charlie's is like a burn from flames. Charlie works with dragons. It's obvious there that Draco needs the most protection.”Grinning, Sirius said, “And the other three is like a joy buzzer from the shop.”“Exactly!” Narcissa told him with a vigorous nod. “Severus, though well versed in protecting himself, is the most vulnerable because of his role as a spy, something that is now bound to come out, putting him in plenty of danger. The reactions all fit! I think this means something and can lead us to what the marks signify!”“Cissy, that was great,” Sirius said, standing then leaning over the table and giving her a kiss on the cheek. “You are still smarter than anyone gives you credit for!”Blushing slightly, Narcissa said, “Thank you. I'll get this sent off to Lucius and Remus. When I get back to my chambers, I'll look closer at the marks and symbolism to see what I can find.”Grinning himself, leaning against Bill, Harry asked, “Do you think it will help anything? I mean, knowing what the marks mean?”“That I don't know,” Narcissa admitted, still smiling and feeling better as there was a tiny breakthrough. “As the marks are all different, it's my feeling it does. They have to mean something specific or they would be the same. Let me see what I can find.”“Anything will help at this point to give us a hint of what more to expect,” Bill said, pleased with this himself. It also made sense, what she said, especially when it came to them and Harry. Both of them, over the years, had done everything they could to protect Harry, though it didn't always work well.“I'm going to tend to what I need when it comes to everything else, send this to Lucius and Remus then hole up to see what I can find,” Narcissa told them, planning to finish what she needed quickly so she could delve in. It was something she was excited about tackling, hoping with the new clues that she could come up with something helpful for everyone.
Lying in bed that night, with Harry between the two, the three men were sharing a butterbeer before going to sleep.
Passing the bottle to Harry after taking a drink, Bill leaned back, arm slipped under Harry's neck. He liked the comfortable ease between the three of them. It wasn't what any of them wanted, of course, but it was working. Harry needed them both, obviously, to protect him. It was more than that, though. Sirius was fun to be around. Though he could be plenty, well—serious when he had to be, other times he wasn't and that was great. There was also the fact that Sirius was loyal in many ways, being rabid about all those he cared about. While he was no slouch at defending himself, Bill had a sneaking suspicion that if anyone started with him, Sirius would jump in just like he did with Harry. That felt good to know and he liked it. No one had really done that with him before. Oh, he knew that Harry would, what with how he was, but there hadn't been the chance before. His brothers would to an extent as well, but none of them were like Sirius in such ways. No one, ever, had said anything like Sirius had to his dad. It felt good in ways he couldn't describe.Sighing, he said, turning slightly on his side, holding Harry close, “I like this.”Downing the last of the butterbeer, Sirius vanished the bottle then sighed. Turning on his side facing the two, draping an arm over Harry as well, Sirius admitted, “So do I. It's not what we wanted, but its working. And we have a good time. That's all that matters, I think. Well, that and we're making sure to help it work. It only improves plenty for us.”“Any clues on what more we can expect?” Harry asked, glancing between the two, shifting around to where he was lying on his side, facing Sirius. “You know, I get that this is something we can't break, so I have some idea of what's coming, I just don't want blindsided.”“Honestly? Not really,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “Other than what I'm sure we can all guess; that it'll be like a marriage with all that goes along with such things. Other than that—no idea. So far, we've not got much of a clue what else might come along. Bonds are funny things that work in strange ways and all of them are different. It's going to depend on the one that tied us together.”“We'll get through whatever it is,” Bill said with a shrug. Shifting around more, he spooned up against Harry's back, arm draped over him.“We will,” Sirius agreed with a sigh. Scooting down, he pressed tighter to Harry. Though that was still odd to do for him, he was getting used to it. Besides, he adored the feelings it produced. Smiling, he reached out and stroked Harry's head. Gazing down at his godson, seeing Harry look at him, he felt content. This was good, despite the uncomfortable bits that might come of it later. Looking up, he saw Bill smiling a little, as he watched them. That was good, too. He hadn't had much contact with Bill over the years, but he liked him. Of course, that helped ease the way with what was here. Groaning, he then said, “I think we better get some sleep. I'm sure there'll be plenty tomorrow we have to take on.”“Oh yeah,” Bill sighed. “There always is. This might not be physical to take on, but the whole mess is tiring to deal with.” Inclining his head, he kissed Harry like he always did before they went to sleep. Looking up after he broke it off, he saw Sirius watching them. Nothing odd there, of course. And it didn't bother him a bit. This time, though, there was a small impulse, one he didn't fully understand, but went with it. Leaning forward, he put a hand on the back of Sirius' head and kissed him as well. Oh, it wasn't the kind of passionate kiss he shared with Harry, but it was a kiss. When he broke it off, he didn't know what to say to the man, though he liked the sensations it produced. Waiting for Sirius' response, hoping he didn't have to explain too much or that it didn't upset Harry, he stayed quiet.Of all the things Bill could have done to blindside him, kissing him was probably on the top of the list and Sirius wasn't sure how to react to it, honestly. Staying still, he looked at the man, not sure what to say. However, he would admit to it feeling good. There was something more to it, though. That he didn't understand. Grinning a little, he chuckled nervously then said, “That was interesting.”“And hot to see,” Harry said softly, shaking his head. Then he flushed, not believing he said it aloud. It was, though. He was used to it being just him and Bill. No, he wasn't the jealous type as he knew how Bill felt about him, so he wasn't sure how he would handle seeing anything with Sirius involved, as he was sure that was coming. Watching the kiss, though, was hot. There was something about it that he liked.Grinning bigger, Sirius shook his head. He supposed as long as it didn't bother any of them, there wouldn't be issues. Leaning down a bit, he kissed Harry. It wasn't a passionate thing, of course, not much different than what Bill did to him, but it sure as hell felt good. Breaking it off, he gazed at his godson, hoping he hadn't upset him. With the way Harry was looking at him, though, that didn't appear like it was the case.“And so was that, hot that is,” Bill admitted with a chuckle. Lying back down, holding Harry close, he sighed. This was good.Lying down himself, Sirius pressed tightly to Harry, draping an arm around him once more. That whole bit wasn't nearly as uncomfortable as he thought it would be. It didn't seem like there was any tension over it, which was good. He didn't feel any either. Good. Shutting his eyes, he sighed. This was something he would think about later. Not now. Now? He just wanted to think about the feelings it produced because he liked those. More than he was willing to admit to himself.
