The first class of the year was starting in exactly five minutes and Snape was no where in sight. Just relax... He told you what to do if he didn't show up for a class... I told myself. Yes but he also said that would rarely happen without warning. My face automatically contorted into a worried frown. I absently sorted some papers at his desk, mopping up spilled ink and disposing of torn papers. It took me way longer than it should have to notice a small table and chair in the corner behind his desk. For me? I shuffled over to it and ran my finger across the shiny metal plaque that glimmered my name. It is for me! Sure it was small and cramped but it was my desk. I couldn't help but smile. The feeling quickly died as the bell in the distance chimed and my heart fell through my stomach. He wasn't seriously planning on making me teach the class on the first day, was he? I gulped. Okay I have to be cool about this. I plopped several note books and this years potions text book onto my desk and sat down, dipping a new quill into the pot of ink that was sat by my new title.
Students came flooding into the class, several had little pieces of paper in their hands and looking around, probably the first years wondering if this was the right room. I silently watched them through my eyelashes, pretending to be utterly engrossed in whatever I was supposed to be doing. Snape still wasn't here. I sighed and tried to remember what he told me. Number one was to take authority and not fear the students. I have the power now. I tried to pep talk myself but it didn't really work. Sighing I got up from my desk when the noise in the room became unbearable.
“Quiet... Please.” I said, shaking slightly. Nothing happened, no one even looked at me. I cleared my throat.
“Quiet!” I yelled a little louder and firmer. All that got was a few turned heads and a couple of sniggers. My small amount of confidence was quickly whittling away into a big, gaping void.
“What's the matter, Granger? Cat got your tongue?” Some girl I knew as Daisy Lennon yelled, causing the whole class to laugh. My cheeks flushed. That little confident voice that was holding me steady suddenly abandoning me.
“Please tell me that old snake has finally died and we're stuck with you, in which case this term is gonna be fucking sweet!” Someone else yelled, a boy from the back. My anger starter to form again from the bottom of my chest, again not from them insulting me but from their horrible words about Snape.
“Need I remind you exactly who has the power here? Would you all like to spend the next months worth of weekends serving detention with Filch?” I hissed. It looked as though some of them were going to laugh again. “You don't think I will? You watch me boys and girls, cause I would love to.” I added. The almost wild look in my eyes causing most of their faces to drop. “Five points from Daisy and Brian.” I finished and sat back down. The room erupted in a chorus of complaints.
“No way, the year has barely started, we'll be minus ten points!” Someone else yelled. My anger still sizzling away giving me more courage than I ever really thought I could have. My eyebrow raised and I tried to mimic Snape's cruel smirk that so often caused my bones to ice over.
“Would you like to make that fifteen, Paul?” I got up and attempted to sneer over to them. “Now sit down and open your text books to page eighteen before you all spend the whole of lunchtime here with me verbally reciting every known herb in alphabetical order.” And with that, they all shut up and sat down. I could physically feel the hatred from them but none of them dared to speak. I waited until I turned around to grin triumphantly to myself. When I did I spotted Snape stood in the doorway of his office at the back of the room. I froze. Shit... I hope I didn't go too far. I stared at him and he entered the room fully, making himself known. Every single persons faces went as white as a sheet and I hoped that they were all thinking what I was thinking; Whether he'd been there the whole time or not. Nothing was said about it so I went and settled down at my desk as he took over his class. I wrote out two forms stating why I'd revoked house points and from whom, while also keeping up with what he was teaching. Remembering this same lecture several years ago and being just as terrified of the man as they looked. I tried not to laugh. Is this what we used to look like, too?
–That class, and the two following classes ended swiftly in time for lunch. Before I left I placed my two forms on the corner of the wizards desk. He looked at them and then up at me.“That was a rather impressive show of courage this morning, Miss Granger. The Gryffindor in you shines through again I see.” He said, his voice steady and impassive. I couldn't help a little swell of pride I felt in my chest. He didn't even read through my forms before writing them off. That meant that the points were now deducted from the counter in the Great Hall, that also meant that he knew exactly what I'd revoked them for and that he was in fact there the whole time. I blushed.
“I wanted to see how you would cope.” He added and pushed his papers in his drawer. It took me a few seconds to realise what he really meant... He didn't show up on purpose! My eyes widened a little bit and he looked at me, his face showing nothing.
“You.. You-”
“I needed to know you could handle them, Miss Granger and you clearly can. That should now eliminate any fears you may have had starting this term.” He got up and donned his cloak. I stared at him for a minute. He was treating me normally, so that was good I supposed. Not that I really knew what to expect after last night. I was happy to forget it if he wanted to. Snape did seem in better spirits, sure enough he was still his usual stoic self but by his posture alone I knew he was more relaxed. I smiled a little, I wasn't one hundred percent sure it was me that made him more at ease but I hoped it was. He reached behind my desk and picked up my cloak. I thought he was just going to hand it to me but he draped it over my shoulders, leaving me to do up the tie. “After this morning I think you should eat.” He gestured to the door and I walked out. He escorted me silently to lunch.
–“Oh man, I say, it was hell.” Draco sighed. Me and him were waiting for Neville at one of the house tables in the great hall. He was busy doing his apprenticeship duties. I was meant to have them tonight but Snape merely told me to clean out the classroom and that I'd have the night off. I wasn't really sure why but I decided to forget it and just seek out Draco.“You're telling me. I actually revoked ten points from Ravenclaw within the first ten minutes of the day.” I huffed and took a swig of my pumpkin juice.
“No way, you took points? Why didn't Snape do it?” He asked, confused.
“He wasn't there. Apparently he wanted to test me to make sure I could handle my shit, so he didn't show up for the first ten minutes of the first lesson.” I rolled my eyes.
“Man... I'd have crapped myself.” Draco simply said, no shame in his words.
“I almost did. You should have been there, they were mocking me and everything.” I grimaced at the memory. “I just kinda snapped at them after a while. It was then or never you know? If I sunk away they'd never take me seriously.” Malfoy nodded.
“Good for you girl, I'd have cowered under the table. Taking point wasn't ever my strong point. I'd have never been able to do it.” He looked at me blankly. He did have a point and he knew it.
“Yeah well, Snape was there the whole time watching it go down. At lunch he said it was impressive.” I raised my eyebrows at my cup as I drank. Draco did the same.
“So he like, complimented you? The hell...” He finished in a whisper. I laughed. “I was gonna ask you actually if anything happened between you guys because at lunch and dinner Snape wouldn't stop glancing at you.” He ushered quietly. We were the only ones there yet he spoke as if it were some massive secret.
“He did?” I hadn't noticed.
“Ya, every time you giggled or something his eyes shifted to your head.” He frowned. I mirrored it.
“God knows, we're as okay as ever though I think. He still hates me, I still hate him.” The last part wasn't exactly true. “We don't really talk much, as surprising as that is.” I added plenty of sarcasm to the end of my sentence. Draco just shrugged.
“Ah well, I was just curious.” He concluded, taking a sip from his drink. The idea baffled me, I honestly didn't have any idea as to why the professor might have been looking at me.
–Neville never did show up but me and Draco had a good time regardless. I started getting to know the blonde more and more and I could honestly say I could call him somewhat of a friend. Wasn't looking forward to what Harry and Ron might say if or when they found out, but I could hardly care. None of us were the same person we started out as before the war, it changed us all to some degree.“Miss Granger? Are you listening?” Came Snapes impatient voice.
“Umm, yes sir.” I nodded dully, snapping my head back into attention. He rose his eyebrow. Honestly I hadn't a clue what he'd just said, I didn't even know what I was supposed to be doing right now. He sighed.
“I suggest you pay attention to this Miss Granger, it's important and I'd rather not be wasting my time.” He drawled. My face flushed slightly. I was hovering over a cauldron in his office next to the classroom. We were finally on my first Apprenticeship lesson and I wasn't even paying attention, I sighed this time.
“Sorry sir.” I shook my head, almost smacking myself in the face to regain composure but decided I already looked crazy enough most of time. We were stood across from one another at a table in the potions classroom, my hair frizzing up above the heat of the steaming cauldron. I blew a curl out of my face and looked at him, still not really sure if I was paying full attention. He returned my look, not much there behind his expression, that wasn't exactly a surprise.
“You know I'm not one for repeating myself.” He stated. Nodding I looked back at the contents of the bowl and frowned. What on earth is this mess? I looked back at Snape, his expression stuck somewhere between annoyance and amusement. No idea how that was possible but he managed to pull it off.
“I know sir, I don't really know how long I was zoning out for...” My voice trailed off somewhere far away, my mind was tempted to follow but decided I best get my game together. If not just to save myself from a lashing by the Potions Bat. There was no mention of that night between the two of us, it was as though it never happened. The only thing I did notice was his reluctance to get anywhere near me. If I moved closer for whatever reason he mirrored my actions and instantly moved in the same direction away from me. I wondered if it was guilt. “I apologise for being so rude on my first lesson.” I added, to keep things balanced I figured it best to just remain as quiet and polite as possible. He simply nodded at me after giving me a small once-over.
“Granger, you're simply not pressing hard enough.” His low voice startled me out of no where, I was so engrossed in my work I forgot I wasn't alone. Obviously he noticed me struggle.
“The book says to apply minimal pressure to the bean.” I defended. A small voice in my head told me I probably shouldn't answer back, specially since he was the professional and obviously was there to teach me but my frustration was leaking out.
“If a book told you to put your head inside the mouth of a dragon would you do it?” He huffed out. Only at that point did I notice he looked really tired. Big, harsh bags under his eyes that were barely noticeable under his lanky black hair. “Is your silence confirmation? If so I can't really say I'm surprised. You'd follow book instructions to the grave I'm sure.” He finished, getting up from his seat. Snape rested his hand on the back of his neck and swung his head back as if to relieve a tense knot of muscle there. “Just because a book tells you something doesn't mean it's the best course of action.” He started. “Honestly, take this as one of the most important lessons I teach you Miss Granger, be in it class or in life; So long as you get to the goal in the end it doesn't matter how you get there. Books are guides to teach you the basics not instruct you to every last detail.” I was taken aback by what he said, it was almost the longest amount of words I'd heard from his mouth all in one time and I think that's what surprised me the most. Staring at him he fidgeted and the motion was strange to witness of the almost always composed master. “Keep that in mind, I'm leaving you to finish the potion for the next hour, leave it on my desk for my return.” He suddenly turned and headed for his chambers, leaving me a little confused and concerned.
“Yes sir...” I whispered.
–The rest of the potion making went a lot smoother after his talk, for once I started relying on my instinct rather than a piece of paper, if what it was asking me to do wasn't working I simply tweaked it ever so slightly. I left the potion on his desk and cleaned my station. I hadn't a clue what potion he got me to brew but it looked familiar as it was cooling, turning a light blue colour in the vial from black. Pleased with my work I headed to my room, not so long ago me and the boys decided to keep the meet ups minimal until we got into the swing of things. After all, we were all shattered all the time. There was no sign of Snape anywhere when I strolled through his living space, no sounds or anything really. When I got into my room I noticed my assignment waiting for me on my desk. It was to be done for our next private lesson the day after tomorrow. Having plenty of time I decided to just hit the hay.~~**~~**~~Ummm.... Yeah. Hi. :B Hueueueueue.
