Chapter 12
After kneeling before the Dark Lord, Severus stood and waited to see what the summons was about. Well, he had an inkling, but wanted it confirmed before he dealt accordingly. A quick look around showed he was the only one here. While that was odd, it had happened before for various reasons. During that glance, he also looked for anything off or signs of anyone else being around. While he didn't expect that, he hoped there was something he might see to report back to Albus about. Even if there was, it was doubtful that he could do anything to help Potter and Black, let alone pass information. It was just something he hoped, so that they had a means if they needed it.
Eying Severus, Tom hissed, “I need information, Severus. And I can only get that from you.” While that was true and he fully planned to get all he could from the man, he also was seeing this as a test of a sort. He knew enough of what was going on to use it to not only extract information, but to make sure it was right. Parts would tell him if Severus was hiding something or lying. In using that, he would get more hints if the man was not as loyal as he professed.Giving a deep bow, Severus asked, “What kind do you require, my Lord?” Then he waited.Shifting around in his chair, he thought to do his normal and reach up to stroke Nagini's head, but stopped himself before he did. She wasn't there, having stayed with Harry, so he didn't want the motion to look odd. Instead, he focused on Severus then launched in. “The situation going on with Draco, Mr. Potter and the mess. I've heard, of course, but I want details, Severus. What offerings being tossed my way are either spin to make it look good or have incomplete information.”And that was the topic he assumed, so he felt like he was on better footing. “What part do you want to know about, my Lord?” Severus asked, ordering his thoughts. There was plenty he needed to leave out, so he had to dance around some areas. Most of what the Dark Lord need to know he could impart.“Walk me through just what you know happened,” Tom told him, settling in and getting comfortable. As it was easy enough, Severus did just that, hitting all the major points from the debacle, not bothering to sugar coat any of it and giving just the facts. When he finished, he waited to see what else was coming. There would be questions, as anyone would expect, so he wanted to be ready for them.Taking all that in, pleased as he was getting more than Harry had provided because of the aftermath, Tom began asking questions for details. Those could only help and he doubted he would get them anywhere else, especially from the ones responsible for this nightmare. They would spin it to make it look better for themselves.Giving up everything that was asked of him, Severus knew not to try to mitigate anything that happened or leave out whatever. The Dark Lord had contacts plenty of places and he could get what he wanted when it came to such matters. He was certain that what he was being asked could be found by those contacts. So, he couldn’t be sure this wasn't a test of some kind. Those he didn't want to fail as it could end up with him not only in a world of hurt, but his loyalty tested. None of them in this mess needed that to happen as he would probably fail it.Running out of what he wanted and needed to know on that topic, Tom gave a distracted nod as he drummed his skeletal fingers on the arm of his chair. There wasn't much more there that he didn't already know, but the change of perspective was most helpful. The same with some other pieces tossed in. Those he could use in other ways. Ordering his thoughts, he said, “I want all you know on the bomb that was thrown, including its effects, what it can cause, all of it.” He assumed Severus would realize that he knew some, but was taking the first steps in poking what else the man might know on the topic. Any hint could give them something they needed to sort out the mess going on.Without hesitation, Severus gave up all he knew on the damnable bomb, including reactions and what it purported to do.Taking it in, Tom gave an internal sigh. That wasn't anything they didn't know as it was more from the standard perspective, the kind of bit they gave in crime novels. Filing it away to dance back towards later, he pressed on, “No one knows where Mr. Potter was pulled to? Or who he might be with?” Then he waited. This was the first of the tricky parts for Severus. He knew plenty, though he only had a guess in one area. So, he needed to decide just what to give up. As he knew the Dark Lord had the two, he could end up verifying parts and would know if he was lying.Quickly deciding it was best to give it up, and the other tidbit he saw before Potter was pulled away, he told the man, “We know Black is one of them. He vanished at the same time as Potter, with all his belongings. That information was reported to Albus not long after the event and before the DMLE showed up at the school.” Lowering his voice, he added, “I was in the infirmary, watching, as Mr. Potter was pulled away. He was entwined by three colors, not two. Which tells all of us there is a third person involved. We also don't know where they are. Black vanished from his home. Albus has tried tracking the two, the DMLE is looking and all else has been attempted, but there is no sign of them.”Pleased that Severus wasn't hiding anything from him, Tom gave a slow nod. “Three you say?” He asked to confirm. “Any clue who the third is?” That was fishing to see if Albus guessed he was the one. As he wasn't sure of Severus' true standing on anything, he wasn't sure what answer he would get, so he was curious. And that was something Severus didn't want to answer, at all. Rather than give up the whole truth this time, he decided to do some fast dancing, coming across with something that would look good. “Albus seems to have an inkling who it might be, but hasn't imparted it to me,” he sneered, folding his arms over his chest. Lying to the Dark Lord was a dangerous game to play, one he didn't pull out often, but this time he thought he had to, hoping it wasn't detected. If it was, he was in more trouble than over just lying, that's for damned sure.Though he said nothing, Tom was pleased with that bit of information. Of course, it fit with what he knew of Albus and the sheep that followed him. “I want anything if he gives it up, Severus. We have the chance to find Mr. Potter before he does. That is what will happen. Do you understand me?” Again, that would be expected of him, so he tossed it out there.“Of course, my Lord,” Severus told him with a bow, thankful that his lie seemed like it was believed.“We need clues, Severus. We both know that Albus only gives up what he has to when it comes to so much. This time we need to beat him to the punch, as they say.” Tom started. “So, what I want from you is information. I'm damned sure Albus knows plenty about that bomb, what comes from it, reactions, all of it. I want the information he has, Severus, every last piece of it. And anything you can find on the matter. If we don't know what it caused and the bond it purports to make, we can't find Mr. Potter before he does. That is your task. I want everything he knows and all you can get your hands on within the week. There will be no foot dragging over this. No excuses will be accepted, either.”The last part of that was worded in such a way that Severus knew if he didn't deliver that he was in for a world of hurt if he couldn’t produce it when summoned next. And he didn't like the idea, either. So, he now had to do a mad scramble to not only find all the information he could on the topic, but he and Albus had to read it over first so they knew the information as a way to help Black if he could get in touch again. Either that, or they could find a way to manage it themselves. So far that wasn't something they could do. Everything but the Patronus was out. Though it should work, they didn't want to chance it as Black said he was sure they were being watched and not to try. “I will find all I can,” Severus assured him with another bow. “Let me see what Albus has managed to glean from his research.”“I want it all, Severus,” Tom told him, tone having a knife edge to it. He wasn't playing. This might end up a better way to get the information he needed than the way they were now going about it. “Including a summary, with notations. If you just bring me a library full of books to slug through, I will be most displeased.”“You have my word,” Severus told him, mind already all over what he had to do and how much work this was going to take. No, this was not a mission he would fail at as he knew the pain he would invoke upon himself if he did.Shifting around, Tom assumed that was all that needed said on the topic and switched to another. “My sources tell me you are now no longer the head of Slytherin. Is this true?” If it was, and he was certain the sources were accurate, he was even less pleased with Draco than before. He needed Severus in that position to help with what he wanted to do.Looking thunderous, still feeling that way as well since it was a tetchy topic with him, Severus snarled, “Yes. For now anyway.” That he hastily added, knowing there would most likely be anger over the topic since the Dark Lord wanted him in that position, “I'm still a consultant, of sorts, for the house. Albus is going to push for my reinstatement at the beginning of the next year. That's all he could manage. It was the Board that made the decision and there is little he can do.” Then he gave a quick rundown of what happened.Adding more he planned to express his displeasure to Draco over, Tom's fingers drummed faster on the arm of his chair in his agitation. “I want you to stay as close to those students as you can and continue being there for them. We need that, Severus.”“I will continue to the best of my ability,” Severus assured him. That he planned to do, but not for the reasons the Dark Lord wanted. Those students didn't need led down the path he had taken so long ago. He fully planned to stop it if he could at all control it. It wasn't something he could manage if the relationships he carefully cultivated were pushed aside by him not being allowed to continue what he was doing because of a decision by the Board.Giving a nod at what was said, Tom asked, “The spells put on the dorms—what exactly are they, if you know, and what do they do?”“I'm not sure of the names,” Severus told him honestly with a shake of his head. “That wasn't mentioned to us in the meeting and I wasn't around when they were applied. The others are being done over the break. Again, I'm not privy to what they are, exactly, or how they work. All I know is they are being woven into the castle itself.”Adding that to the mental list of what he needed to look into, Tom ordered, “If you can find out, I want to know. Just don't make it look suspicious.” With all that was coming, he may need those wards negated to accomplish some of it. Yet more he planned to impart his displeasure over, to plenty.Feeling that weariness that was already there start to grow, Tom knew it was time to end this before Severus detected anything off. He was well aware of how observant the man was, so he didn't want him picking up on any odd signs. Reiterating what he wanted done, he then added, “Within the week, Severus. Dismissed.”Bowing deeply once more, Severus assured him, “I'll tend to it, my Lord.” Then he swept out, mind already working over what he had to do. This would be tricky and had to be done just so for it to work. Yes, he needed Albus' help, desperately.Watching the man in black leave, Tom started drumming his fingers on the arm of his chair once more. That niggling was still there, nudging him harder this time. Something was off and he didn't like what it could mean. How to find out was the question, though. He didn't know how to go about doing so.Standing with a groan, he headed back to his office. First on the agenda was to get more of the new version of Pepper-up so he could function. After that, he had the first steps to take in dealing with another matter he wanted tended to as fast as he could manage. To start with that mission, he needed to stay alert. This one was a touchy dance, but one that he had to take on and get help with. So, alert and fully functional was needed.
Shifting in his chair after filling Albus in, Severus then admitted, “That was not a dance I want to go through often. However, I do need that research. I'm well acquainted with the way it was phrased and what it means if I don't return with it.”
“We'll come up with all we can, Severus, rest assured,” Albus told him, mind turning over what was said. Leaning back and twiddling his thumbs, he speculated, “I think this means that Tom isn't coming up with what he needs to figure out what that bond can do. We know Harry and Sirius are there, of course, so it's not for him trying to locate them. If we get him the right information, I'm sure that Sirius can use it to his advantage in some way, shape or form. The more we can get him, the better off he'll be in dealing with what he's been tossed into.”Straightening up, he told Severus, “Yes, we'll get on it tonight after curfew. I think I can get the other teachers involved as well, at least some of them. In the end, it can probably also help us. The more information we all have, the better chance there is of stopping what's going on.”“Very true,” Severus conceded with a nod, not having thought of that. Black, though he despised the man, could think on his feet and take advantage of something dropped on him. To manage, he needed the opportunity. They needed to give him that. Changing topics slightly, he asked, “Have we found any way besides the Patronus to contact Black? Anything? We've run through the standard, such as house elves, owls and the like, with all being discounted.”“There is nothing,” Albus told him with a weary sigh, looking old. “Unless Sirius contacts us again in some way, I'm unwilling to chance attempting to message him. All we can do is what we are; press on to find the two of them. If we can manage that, we might find another means. The DMLE itself is trying, something I'm being kept abreast of, but they are having no luck either.”Looking dour at that, Severus shook his head. They would find a way, it would just take time. Until then, he hoped like hell Black could manage something to keep Potter safe from what the Dark Lord was bound to try. At least long enough to give them the time they needed. That was all they had. If he couldn't, the war was lost and everything all of them had gone through for so long was for naught.
Coming into the bedroom the two shared after a short knock, Tom looked around. Black was seated on the settee with Harry sprawled out by him, head in his lap. Nagini was draped over the sleeping lad hissing what he knew to be a song to soothe. At least she was trying.
Walking over, he conjured a chair then took a seat with a groan. Looking at Harry, he asked, “Any change?”“Not much,” Sirius admitted, tossing the book he was looking through onto the table. “I got him to stay awake a little longer with the help of that junk and to eat a tad more than he has been, but that's all.” Scrubbing both hands through his hair, he sighed, “The not eating enough to keep a fairy alive can't be helping the situation.”“No, it can't. Especially with how thin he is to begin with.” Tom sighed. “I do have a couple potions to stimulate his appetite. It might help.”“That I'll give a try,” Sirius admitted. Groaning, he asked, “Any shot at getting your hands on some Muggle drinks? Like the soda junk? I know it has loads more caffeine than anything we have.”“I can manage,” Tom told him, planning to tend to that in the morning. “Any idea what kind he likes? I know there are many varieties out there.”“Coke, I think. At least he's mentioned that one,” Sirius told him. “I don't know, really. They aren't something I'm familiar with. I'm managing to get tea, juice, milk and butterbeer down him, but he might like those better.”“I'll have the appetite stimulants for you first thing in the morning. The other—give me some time,” Tom told him, not really sure how to handle that as he couldn't send an elf and disliked going out among Muggles to tend to anything.“Beyond the eating, any sign that the potion is working?” Tom asked.“No, but that's not unexpected,” Sirius admitted, rubbing a hand over his face, tired himself by now. “They take time to work. Nothing I know of will have an immediate effect like some of our potions do. It's more of a gradual bit.”Not something Tom wanted to hear as he had plenty he had to take care of that required him staying as alert as he could manage. “I'm talking to a Healer tomorrow. Let's see what he says.” He wanted this fixed, now.Snorting, Sirius drawled, “He's going to tell you just what I did on it.” Before the evil arse could say a word, he added, “I've known several that had to take these for depression and they are prized by potions addicts because of what they can do. It was something we had to learn about during Auror training. Unless there have been huge advances since I went to prison, I doubt it's changed.”'Bloody wonderful,' Tom thought though he didn't utter that. Shaking his head, he told him, “We'll press on how we are then.” Before Black could comment, as it looked like he wanted to, he told him, changing topics, “I have a new line on getting information. Give me a week to see what it brings in. It's one I think we'll glean more from than what we are currently. At least they're going to summarize what they find and point me to just where to look. Let's see what they bring me.”“We need something more because these books are not giving up shite,” Sirius admitted, glaring at the still huge stack he had left to go through. “All it's giving are pieces and none of those are anything that helps. I'm not getting much of anything about what the damned bond actually does or can cause! And I mean nothing other than vague hints or double talk.”“I'm doing what I can as I'm not fairing any better,” Tom told him, trying not to snap because of his growing frustration over the lack of information they truly needed. “I won't be around much tomorrow,” he said, not wanting to stay on a topic that had him aggravated. “If you need anything, send an elf. They know how to get in touch. If it's that important, I'll come back.” Eyes flitting to Nagini, who was looking at him, he added with a sigh, though not liking the idea, “Nagini can stay here. I'm not sure if she's helping or not, but she may be laying a foundation that can. At least we can hope.”“That's fine,” Sirius told him, though highly curious about what he was up to. With some of what the evil arse was doing, he probably really didn't want to know either. Reaching out to pet the snake, something he was just getting comfortable with, he said, “I think her staying with Harry is a good idea. At least it'll seem normal when he starts functioning better.”Standing with a groan, Tom told him, “If you need anything, send an elf.” Then he swept out, planning to get some rest and hope he could function better the following day as it was going to end up plenty delicate.“Arse,” Sirius muttered, though without any real bite to it. Looking around at the books all over the damned place, he felt exhausted. No, he couldn’t face anymore tonight. It was time for bed.Sighing, he leaned back and rubbed Harry's head then told his godson, “Let's get ready for bed. I think lying down together will do us both a world of good. Then we can see what tomorrow brings.” Silently, he added, 'And I hope like hell you come around more because I need you, Harry.'Looking at the snake stretched out over his godson, he told her, “We're going to head to bed. You can check on him several times, if you like. If he's awake, go ahead and talk to him.” Hearing a hiss in reply, assuming it was her way of saying that she would, he watched her slither off Harry then head towards Tom's room.Groaning, Sirius gently prodded Harry and got him into a sitting position, waking him slightly. Standing, he helped the very groggy Harry up then to the loo, summoning their nightwear. He would dump the potion down Harry's throat, hoping he could get him to eat something small, then they were getting some damned sleep. Well, he was getting some and Harry was going back to comatose. Either way, they were going to bed.
