Four am found Draco tossing and turning. He hadn't been able to make himself comfortable after his research. Reaching across the bed he once again found it to be cold and empty. He'd noticed that was his instinct now, to reach for Hermione, and wondered if that was why he was having difficulty falling asleep. A creak of the door reached his ears; snapping his eyes open he saw her unmistakable bushy hair walking towards him.
As soon as the bed dipped under her weight Draco reached out, "couldn't sleep either?"
"Gryffindor Tower didn't feel right," she murmured, nestling into his side. She felt a slight nod as both their bodies relaxed.
"I told Ginny," she whispered. Hermione was fighting off sleep but needed to tell him what had happened. She felt a low rumble in his chest and looked up; he was watching her with half closed eyes, a concerned look on his face. The hand resting on her back started rubbing reassuring circles, encouraging her to go on.
"I...she said she was sorry, Draco. But I don't know if I can forgive her or Harry yet."
Draco pondered her words: if she couldn't forgive her best friends, how could she forgive him? Reality was, he'd done much worse in his lifetime than Potter and the Weaselette. He'd been on the side of a madman, trying to eradicate all Muggleborns. His aunt had tortured her, the 'mudblood' scar was still visible on Hermione's arm. He started pulling himself away; disentangling himself from her grip.
"Draco, please don't do this right now," she whispered refusing to let go. "You had little choice. Your family was worth everything to you and Voldemort held it like a carrot in front of you. Your parents made that decision for you. Harry and Ginny did it on their own."
"That may be, Hermione. But what I did, what my family did, was exponentially worse than Potter and Weasley's actions. They thought they were protecting their family too."
Silence filled the room. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence but a thoughtful one; each mulling over Draco's words. The seconds ticked into minutes and the minutes felt like hours until Hermione broke the silence, "but I need you Draco."
In his heart, Draco still felt unworthy of her forgiveness (was it forgiveness?) He hoped that he could earn her trust, that he could prove her right. Especially if it meant getting rid of the wretched thing on his arm. At that moment, his only response was to pull her closer and get comfortable once again.
"I read something interesting while you were gone," he said. Instead of an answer a slight snore hit his eardrum. Draco chuckled slightly, placed a kiss on the top of her hair and fell asleep as well.

"Draco, wake up!" Hermione shook his shoulder again and again. She'd given up on being gentle minutes ago, but had yet to get to get a response. He swatted her hands away and gave her a groggy "what?"
"Have you seen these books?"
Hermione shoved How Tattoos Work under his nose, open at the chapter Cursed Tattoos and How to Remove them. "Granger, I pulled the damned thing off the shelf. There wasn't anything in the index..."
"But there was!" Hermione exclaimed in excitement. Draco sat up immediately, scanning the page the book was open to. It described what he had seen perfectly, in exact detail. Actually, in even more detail. It was so in depth that Draco sat motionless staring at the page. Eventually he recovered, snapping at Hermione: "and where am I going to find true love?"
He threw the book across the room, got out of bed and pushed himself passed Hermione to his clothes. She stumbled backwards with a huff. A look of outrage passed over her face before she realized he was clutching his forearm. Did he really think nobody could love him?
"I have done horrible things, Hermione. I was a disgusting person for years. Even if there were a woman crazy enough to want me, I wouldn't deserve her."
He said it in such a low voice that it was barely above a whisper. Hermione could hear sorrow and regret in every word and it broke her heart. Slowly she got up from her perch and walked over to him. She wrapped her arms around his naked torso and held him close to her chest. She could feel slight shakes as he quietly sobbed.
"You will find someone, I am sure of it." Hermione murmured into his shoulder blade, lightly caressing him with her lips. The slight touch of affection felt electric. A tingling sensation spread from the point of contact in every direction. As the static consumed him the self-loathing lifted; like Hermione's kiss was a miracle cure.
Quickly composing himself, Draco turned in her arms to return her hug. He leaned down to place a kiss on her cheek as thanks for her comfort right as she turned. Their lips touched lightly. It felt perfectly natural, which shocked them both.
Hermione stepped back and cleared her throat, "sorry." Draco shook his head and closed the gap Hermione had made between them. "There's nothing to be sorry about," he whispered as he leaned in closer again. Kissing Hermione had felt perfect, even if it had been accidental, she was exactly what he needed to heal.
"Because if you're sorry about that, then I should be devastated about doing it again." Gently, he pressed his lips to hers. Hermione lent into his embrace, closing her eyes and enjoying the sensation.
The sweet caress lasted for mere moments but when they broke apart each felt like they had found home.

With a plop, Ginny took a seat next to Hermione at the Gryffindor table, "so where do you sleep at night?" The thinly veiled question was asked with fake curiosity written all over it.
Hermione groaned slightly at the question, but in the spirit of rebuilding their friendship she answered honestly. "I've been sleeping in the Room of Requirement."
Ginny gave her a searching looking, trying to find the lie in the other young woman's statement. "The professors did an amazing job rebuilding this place. I was positive the RoR had been destroyed for good," the redhead said in response.
Relief washed over Hermione. For the first time since the break up there had been no argument or overt cattiness. It seemed like they were both trying, at the very least, to be peaceful. An awkward silence enveloped them as they finished their breakfast. Before getting up Ginny cleared her throat, "we've got Quidditch try outs in an hour, did you want to come watch? There'll be butterbeers afterwards...Luna's going to be there too." Hermione looked at Ginny a little shell shocked, but nodded her head.
She was grateful that she was being included again, yet it felt odd. It was like she had to be reintroduced to her own friends and fellow Gryffindors. Hermione also felt uncomfortable, she had forgotten about Luna. She'd been so wrapped up in her own mess that she had ignored her off beat friend. Guilt gnawed at her subconscious as she watched Ginny walk away, chatting to her classmates like she had no worries in the world.
