September first saw Ron, Ginny, Hermiones, along with both the Weasley parents finishing their goodbyes on platform 9 3/4.
Hermione looked over the crowd trying to spot Harry over everyone, "I don't see him Ronald. Do you suppose that he may already be on the train waiting for us?"
Ron wrapped his arm around Hermione's shoulder, "He better be 'Mione. He is going to get an earful from me and you."
Hermione nodded befroe saying her goodbyes to Aurthur and Molly. She left ron with his parents as she began to search the train for any sign of their missing friend.
Within moments of climbing aboard the train, Ron lurched forward from the momentum of the train leaving the station. Both of them searched the train looking for any sign or whisper of Harry, yet found nothing. The pair of them sat in their usual compartment as both of them tried to figure out where their best friend and the other part of the "Golden Trio" was.
Hermione began to pace back and forth across the compartment, "We haven't gotten any owls from him all summer. We don't even know if he is alive. The Order has said nothing about his where abouts or what he is up to." She sat with a hugg as she looked at her boyfriend, "Ron, what do you think happened to him? Where could he be? Why hasn't he written to either of us? Or even members of the Order? Remus hasn't been in contact with the order either. What if he and Harry are somewhere together?"
With a heavy sigh, Ron looked out the window of the compartment, "Hermione, Harry is safe. No matter what, we would have heard about it if he was hurt or even dead. As for the lack of owls from him or Remus, its probably because they can't for everyone's safety. If Remus is missing too, then they are probably off traing for his fight against You-Know-Who." Ron pulled a sandwich from his jacket and began to devour it, "I mean if I were Dumbledore, I would make sure that Harry is trained up good and proper." He motioned for her to come and sit next to him.
With a soft sigh Hermione moved over to sit next to Ron, leaning against him as she curled her feet under her, "I'm worried about him. What if something were to happen and neither of us were there to help him?"
Holding her close, he placed a kiss on her head, "Harry's alright. We will see him when we get to Hogwarts. Don't worry."
The pair sat there on the train holding each other until they had to change. They stayed in silence the rest of the ride including the carriage ride up to the castle.
As the students entered the great hall they noticed that an extra chair was placed on the far corner of the table. They saw a brunette and silver haired elf conversing with the ever snarky potions master. Not only was the man talking back, but the two seemed to actually enjoying one another's input on the conversation.
The older years took their seats, conversing with others over what they did for the summers before Professor McGonagall led the first years into the hall. The conversation between the potions master and the elf stopped abruptly as the sorting of the first years began.
When the last child took their seat, Dumbledore stood and made his way to the podium, "To our new students, welcome, and to our returning students, welcome back. Before we can dig in, I have a few announcements. First let us welcome back Professor R. J. Lupin. He will be returning to the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts." He paused a moment for the applause to die down, "Hogwarts will also be playing host to an apprentice of potions and transfiguration. He is to be treated with the same respect as any of our professors." He motioned for the yound elf at the end of the table.
Harry stood and bowed to the students, "Thank you Professor." He sat back down in this chair, taking a sip of water from his goblet.
Dumbledore nodded, " A reminder to everyone, the Forbidden Forest is just as it's name implies, forbidden. No spells are to be cast in the corridors. LAstly, products from Weasley's Wizarding Wizbees are not permitted." He smiled at the young faces looking back at him, "Well tuck in." With a flick of his wrist all the tables were filled with delicious and decadant morsels.
Harry pulled only fruits, vegitables, and lightly seasoned foods onto his plate. He stomach could no longer handle to overly sweetened or overly seasoned foods anymore. He dearly missed the taste of a treacle tart but it held too many ingredients and he could taste each one individually. Ever since he had come into his inheritance he refrained from eating any cooked food unless it was prepared by himself or Dobby.
Harry shook his head bring himself back to the scene before him. He looked over the tables in the hall finally spying his friends. With a sad smile he took an apple and a pear from the table. He transfigured his knife into a self inking quill before he wrote a quick message to Dumbledore on his napkin, and with a flick of his wrist he turned the napkin into an oragami dragon. He set it off to the headmaster as he noded to both Professors Snape and McGonagall.
The young elf stood making his way from the hall and up to the seventh floor, making his way to the office of one Albus Dumbledore.
As Dumbledore caught the small note and smiled leaning in close to McGonagall, he whispered in her ear to have both Miss Granger and Mr. Weasley report to his office after the feast.
When the feast ended, Harry and Dumbledore sat in the man's office, sipping at tea as Remus and Snape joined them. All men nodded to each other as the waited for the rest of the improptu gathering to arrive.
It was perhaps five minutes before the last three made it to the office. Professor McGonagall was followed inside by Ron and Hermione.
Looking at everyong else sitting in the room, Hermione turned her focu to Dumbledore, "Where's Harry?" Why isn't he here? Why hasn't he written to any of us all summer? What's going on?"
Ron pulled her to him, "Mione. Ask one at a time and wair for the answers."
Dumbledore smiled at the pair, "Now, Miss Granger and Mr. Weasley. Let me assure you that Harry is perfectly safe. He has had quite a bit on his plate so I am sure that if you ask him he will grant you most of the answers you seek." He chuckled and popped a candy in his mouth as his eyes started to twinkle with a hidden secret.
Ron nodded, "It's about his family, innit? That's why he didn't write."
Snape looked up at the pair of them, "And what do you know of Mr. Potter's home life?"
Bitting back an angry retort the redhead glared at Snape, "More that you'll know."
At seeing Snape bristle towards his friends, Harry stood quickly intercepting both men, "Enough. Severus, calm yourself. He wasn't there. He doesn't know everything." He turned his attention back to his friend, "Ron, you know who I am."
Ron looked up into the golden green eyes. His own blue eyes seemed to flick over the elf's face, "Look I don't know who you are, or even what it is you are-" The man's voice quit working as he saw the person in front of him move the hair from his forehead. Ron's mouth fell open as he saw Harry's scar.
Like when they first met on the train ride six years ago. While Ron stared at his friend, Hermione had all but tackled Harry to the floor. She stepped back from him and punched him hard in the jaw, "Harry James Potter. What the hell is wrong with you? We were so worried about you."
Harry rubbed his jaw and smiled softly at her, "I'm sorry 'Mione. There was quite a bit on my mind this summer. You know being an elf and all. I don't really want anyone else to find out who the apprentice is yet. At least until I graduate." Harry looked over at Ron and chuckled. He clapped a hand on this friend's shoulder, "Ron take a deep breath and calmly work your way through it. I know it is a lot to take in, but I am Harry and I am an elf."
Harry nodded to both Hermione and Ron before turning his attention back to the rest of the room. He sighed and sat back down wathcing his friends work it over. With a sigh, Harry rubbed his jaw where Hermione had hit him as he looked over at Snape, "I now understand all of your exasperation at teaching the 'dunderheads' as you so often called us."
The dark haired wizard smirked, "About time you understood the pain and suffering I willingly put myself through everyday when I attempt to force knowledge into their thick heads."
Ron bristled at the par of them, "Oi! Whe do you two get off talking about us as if we are not here? And why are you two acting as if you are good friends? I mean you hate each other right?"
Harry sighed as he sat back in his chair, taking a moment to collect his thought and cross his legs, "Ron, I am seeking an apprenticeship in tow subjects and he is my potions master. Am I supposed to carry on my contempt and great dislike for the man who also shares a passion for a craft that I've had to keep hidden for six years? Should I just grouse at him when his is making yet another sacrifice to aid me? Is that what I should do?"
After being thoroughly chastised, the redhead had the decency to blush and mumble an apology.
Hermione looked over at Harry, "How are you an apprentice when you haven't even taken your NEWTs yet?" She was standing there looking over at him with a smug look on her face.
Harry grit his teeth, "I have taken them. No I will not tell you about them and no I will not help you study for them." He turned back to look at the others in the room in turn, "I don't really want it known or spread about my scores either. I would prefer if it were kept that way."
With a nod to everyone in the room, Harry bid them all a good night before heading back to his rooms.
Ron and Hermione watched him go before they too quickly bid their professors good night, chasing after Harry, "Harry! Wait up!"
The young elf paused in the corridor before they made it to the grand staircase, "What do you want?"
Hermione forced Harry to look at them, "Harry James Potter. What has happened to you over the summer? Why are you acting like such a prat?"
Herry's eyes had grown cold, "What happened? What about what happened to you? I never once recieved a letter from either of you. Why do you care all of a sudden? Is it because I passed my NEWTs? Or maybe it's because I'm an elf?" With his newly aquired height, he glared into Ron's eyes then down at Hermione.
He watched as the pair of them stammered to answer him. Harry's lip curled in a snarl, "As I thought." He sneered at them both before turning on his heel, heading back towards his rooms. He paused outside the portrait to his rooms and sighed, "Now they care." He growled as the portrait swung open. He shrugged off his robes, making sure to hang it on the rack just inside the doorway. He continued stripping his clothes off as he made his way to his room. After changing into a pair of silk sleep pants, he made his way back through his rooms picking up all the clothes that he dropped on the floor and put them into his hamper.
Once the clothing was all put in the hamper, he returned to his sitting room and moved the coffee table to the side. With a heavy sigh he sat down on the floor, crossing his legs under him and closing his eyes. He cracked his neck as he slowed his breathing and began meditate. His mind was cataloging everything that had happened for the past day, making sure that it was all out of his way so he could focus on everything else instead of a broken friendship.
The Gryffindor couple made their way back towards the common room when they passed the remaining professors from the meeting in Dumbledore's office. Seeing Remus, the pair waved him over to them, "Remus can we chat for a moment?"
With a soft smile Remus looked down at the pair, "Ron, Hermione. What can I do for you?"
As tears filled her eyes, "What happened to Harry over the summer to make him so distant and cold towards us? I think we have a right to know. No. We deserve to know."
Looking over the two teens in front of him, Remus sighed, "Simply put, he has been through hell. Neither of you wrote to him this summer. That was another blow to him. He is hurting and is having trouble believing that two people that were his best friends couldn't even have been bothered to write to him the entire summer. " Remus turned to stare at the young Weasley, "Ron, your parents and the twins sent Harry presents and cards on his birthday, but you couldn't even be bothered." He took a deep breath as he pinched the bridge of his nose, "He needs time. Do not force him to choose between yourselves and his studies. He would surely drop you after everything from this summer."
Ron opened his mouth as his face grew red with rage, "He won't choose his apprenticeships over us. We are best mates. He would rather play quidittich then study."
Remus shook his head, "Ron you have turned on Harry once when you were supposed to be friends with him. You let your jealousy of the situation take over and drive a wedge between the two of you." He took a moment to look them both in the eyes, "Do not force this issue." He nodded to the pair as he made his way back to his rooms, only to pick something up then go and visit his godson.
Harry sighed when he stretched his legs out after his meditation. He couldn't help byt think perhaps he was a bit harsh on his friends. Well not Ron, he needed to be put back in his place after treating snape like dirt.
He was broken out of his thoughts by a knock on his door. He groaned as he stood, stretching his back with several satisfying pops, "Enter."
Smiling as he tried to hold a wriggling bundle in his arms, "I got you somthing. My hope is that he will give you some company when some of us can't be around."
Intrigued, the young elf mad his way over to Remus, "What is it?"
Remus just smiled at the son of his friends, "Just have a look. I promise that he isn't dangerous."
With a trembling hand, Harry took the blanketed bundle away from Remus. He sat down on the sofa and carefully unwrapped the bundle with trembling hands. As the blanket was pulled back he saw a blonde and brown bundle of fur, followed by a lupine head struggle out of the blanket. The small wolf lifted his head to look at Harry with glowing blue eyes.
As their eyes met, the young elf could hear the pup's voice in his head, "Where is my mummy?"
Startled, Harry looked over at Remus, "What? I.. I just heard his voice in my head. How is that...What happened to his mum?"
Remus sighed, "His mum was killed by a farmer. She was apparently attacking his sheep, and as for why you can hear him.." He sighed, "Did you even read all the books that you were given?" He watched his godson cuddle the pup closer to his chest, "In one of the books it mentions that an Eladrin will understand a particular creature. They will be able to understand the creature that is to become their familiar, mindspeak with the creature, if you will. The animal will stay with the Eladrin until the death of the elf." He cleared his throat as he watched the young elf and wolf pup, "I had hoped that this pup would become your familiar because he is unique and would not survive living in a pack where his small size and odd coloring would make him the omega."
Harry smiled sadly down at the pup, "Little One, your mummy has gone to hunt with Artemis. She asked for me to look after her most percious thing."
The pup sat back on his haunches in Harry's lap and howled. The cry from the pup was full of pain and sadness as tears began to roll down Harry's cheeks.
When the pup finished howling he looked up at the elf, "Mummy is with the goddess? You will look after me? Not the sick wolf?"
Harry nodded, "I will look after you. What is your name? I can't keep calling you little one."
With a yawn the pup looked over the room, "Mum called me Mika. What are you called?"
Harry chuckled at the pup, "You can call me Harry. You seem to be a bit knackered, so why don't you go to sleep? Tomorrow we can go over the pack rules. Sound fair?"
The pup in his arms popped his head softly before he curled into a ball on Harry's lap. The young elf smiled at the pup before looking over at his godfather, "Remmy. I think I am going to get some sleep with Mika. Besides I have potions work first thing in the morning."
Remus nodded, "I hope you have an easy night. Don't try to let Severus ruffle your feathers to much. Don't worry about Mika, I will talk with Severus about your familiar."
Harry nodded as he carefully pulled the pup into his chest and stood, "G'night Remmy."
The werewolf smiled at the pair, "Goodnight Harry."
I have no excuse for the delay in getting this out to you but I do hope that you enjoyed it. This chapter was meant to be a bit awe then pull at your heart in the last moment.
As always, I love hearing your feedback, so please review.
