Chapter 12
Hermione held Eridanus on her hip while her other hand grasped Sirius'. "Hold on," she said. "One, two, three!"
She Apparated the three of them with a pop. When she opened her eyes, she saw the Granger household looming up ahead.
"Ready?" she asked, turning to Sirius.
He put on a brave face and nodded. "Now, have you explained the situation? How I'm back from the dead and everything?"
Hermione nodded. "They really don't understand it, of course, but I explained it all to them. Mum knew my research at the Ministry was focused on bringing you back. She and Dad seemed okay with it, but you are a bit older."
Sirius made a sour face. "Yes, I'm old enough to be your father."
She laughed. "Now, Sirius, none of that. Yes, you're an old man, but you're my old man and don't you ever forget it." Reaching up, she gave him a quick kiss.
He sighed. "Okay, let's get this over with."
"Don't sound so enthusiastic," Hermione chided him. "Mum and Dad are nice people, you'll see. They've been very helpful with Eridanus."
"Okay, I've got an open mind, okay?" Sirius took Eridanus from her.
"I could have held him," she protested.
"Yes, but your father will be less likely to hit me if I'm holding him," Sirius explained with a smirk.
Hermione huffed, rolling her eyes. "Come on."
The three of them walked up the steps. Once at the door, Hermione knocked a few times. A few moments later the door opened to reveal a middle aged woman with gray hair. "Hermione!" she cried, throwing her arms around her daughter.
"Hi Mum," Hermione said, hugging her mother tightly. "I've missed you. How are things?"
"Good, good," she said, stepping back to look over Hermione. "You look good. And this must be Sirius." She glanced over Sirius, taking in his appearance.
"Yes, Mum, this is Sirius Black. Sirius, this is my mother, Amelia."
Sirius offered his hand. Amelia took it, shaking it. "It's nice to finally meet you. I must admit, this whole ordeal has been rather… strange, but Hugo and I have adjusted. Hermione is quite good at explaining things."
Sirius genuinely smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you too. I wish I could have earlier, but obviously that wasn't possible."
"Now, why don't you let me hold my grandson? I haven't seen him in so long." Amelia reached forward and practically yanked Eridanus out of Sirius' arms. "Hello, little man." She pressed kisses all over his chubby face.
Hermione took Sirius' hand, holding it tightly.
"Come in, come in," Amelia said, stepping aside. "Your father is in the living room."
"Okay," Hermione said, taking Sirius in that direction. "Dad, hi."
An older man looked up, smiling when he saw her. "Pumpkin, hi." He approached them, hugging her tightly. "It's good to see you."
"It's good to see you too," Hermione replied. She gestured to Sirius. "This is Sirius, Dad. Sirius, this is my father, Hugo."
"Nice to meet you, sir," Sirius said, holding out his hand.
Hugo didn't take it. Instead he narrowed his eyes at him.
Suddenly wishing he still had Eridanus in his arms, Sirius lowered his hand. He cleared his throat, feeling incredibly awkward.
"You know, Sirius, there's a lot I'd like to say to you." He glared at Sirius.
"Dad, don't-" Hermione stated.
"Hugo, leave the poor man be. Can't you see he's nervous enough?" Amelia interjected from the doorway.
"Yes, well, I want to know what an old man like him was doing running around with a barely legal young girl." Hugo narrowed his eyes, cracking his knuckles menacingly.
"Dad, you know I was the one to instigate it," Hermione pressed. "Sirius was against it, but I just couldn't help my feelings."
"But he should have shown more self-control," Hugo countered.
Hermione crossed her arms and gave her father a glare. "Just like you should have with Mum?"
Hugo pursed his lips, shifting himself. "That was-"
"-No different," Hermione cut him off. "I love Sirius and he is going to be a part of my life from now on. You best get over it and stop being so hypocritical."
With a sigh, Hugo nodded. "Fine, but don't expect me to like you too much," he warned.
"All I would like, sir, is to prove myself to you. I care very deeply for your daughter and would never hurt her."
Hugo made a sound. "Yes, well, I don't think-"
"-It's time for dinner," Amelia said, breaking up the tension. "Come on. I made vegetable lasagna."
"Oh, yum," Hermione said. "Come on." She took Sirius' hand again and led him to the dining room. Things were going better with her parents than she had thought they would.
Walking into the kitchen, she saw her Mum had already placed Eridanus into his high chair. Hermione sat next to him, Sirius sitting next to her. Amelia and Hugo sat across from them.
"So what's next on the agenda?" Amelia asked once they started eating. "I noticed you're wearing a new piece of jewelry."
Hugo practically dropped his fork. "What is that?" he said, pointing at the ring on Hermione's left hand.
"It's an engagement ring," Hermione said. "We decided we would get married."
"But shouldn't you wait?" Hugo asked. "I mean, you've only just got back together. What if things don't work out?"
"They will," Hermione said confidently. "We love each other and we already have Eridanus. I don't see the point in waiting any longer."
"Well, I'm happy for you both," Amelia said, giving them both smiles.
"Now wait, are you sure you don't want to think this over more, Hermione?"
"Hugo, stop," Amelia chided, starting to get angry that her husband was being so difficult.
"But…"
"Don't you want me to make an honest woman out of your daughter?" Sirius challenged, staring at Hugo.
Hermione gently smacked his leg under the table. "Dad, he means that-"
"I know what he means," Hugo snapped. "I just don't want you to make any mistakes."
"But I'm not. You need to just trust me and the choices that I'm making. This is what I want, Dad, can't you see that?"
Hugo accepted defeat. It seemed that no matter what he'd say, Hermione's mind was made up. "Fine, then."
Hermione smiled. "I love you both very much."
"We love you too," Amelia said. "Now, tell me a bit about my grandson. How was his birthday?"
"It was good. Very chaotic because of Sirius' return, but he loved being the center of attention that day."
"We're sorry we couldn't be there, sweetheart," Hugo said.
"It's fine. I know the convention you attended was important. How did that go?" Hermione asked.
"Good. There's been a new toothpaste developed to help prevent cavities better than what's out there."
Sirius, feeling lost with the direction the conversation was taking, sat back and just watched. It was obvious that the three of them had a very happy and loving relationship. He was glad her parents had supported her with Eridanus. It was obvious that Amelia spoiled the boy more than Hugo. She was currently feeding him some pudding.
After dinner, Sirius helped Amelia clean the table off. "Thank you for having me over," Sirius said, placing the dishes in the sink.
Amelia smiled. "Thank you for coming over. I'm sorry Hugo's being so difficult. It's just hard for fathers to let their little girls go."
Sirius nodded. "I understand. He has every right to feel that way."
"But he shouldn't be so thickheaded about it. That's where Hermione gets her stubbornness, by the way." The two of them started to do the dishes, Amelia washing and Sirius drying.
"You know," Amelia began, "I just want to thank you for coming back into Hermione's life. I know you've only been back a few days, but I can already see how happy she's been. She had been so depressed with things, I was afraid for her for a while."
"Really?" Sirius asked, frowning.
"Yes. She had started drinking a bit, which isn't good at all."
"But now?"
"She seems all right. Ginny owled me and told me that she hadn't touched the bottle in quite some time. I'm rather proud of her for that."
Sirius was quiet. "I missed so much."
"But you're here now," Amelia consoled him. "That's all that matters."
He chuckled. "Hermione said the same thing."
"She's a bright girl, that one. You better take care of her."
"I will," Sirius promised.
"Good, now why don't we go join them in the living room?"
Amelia and Sirius joined the other three in the living room where they continued their visit late into the evening.
