Chapter 12
“We'll, they started,” Harry said, looking around the kitchen in Grimmauld Place, disgusted. Indeed, it was better as the dust was gone and it didn't smell like plenty of bits rotting, but it was still in horrid shape. It would take the elves weeks to clean this place and have it in shape for them to show it.
“They're doing what they can,” Sirius admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “With how long this house has sat empty, it's going to take a lot of work. You need to consider it hasn't had anyone in it besides Kreacher, who we both know is completely mental, since shortly after I went to Azkaban. That's almost two decade of neglect. We can just be thankful the structure is still sound without problems with the plumbing and leaks.”“Didn't think of it that way,” Harry admitted, arms folded over his chest, looking around. “Right, what are we doing here? And do we need to attend to anything?”“I'm having the elf I put in charge focus on the downstairs and the kitchen so we can at least have Hermione in without her being completely disgusted. He also sent them to unseal the room with the painting of Phineas and destroy it. As everyone and their bleeding uncle knows we're back, I'm not giving Albus any kind of access to the house, even if it just a sarcastic, obnoxious painting. Once the downstairs is done, they'll work their way up from there. Give it time and they'll have it looking good.”“I hope so,” Harry muttered, looking around. “Do we have any pests to take care of or objects they need us to tend to?”“A few pests,” Sirius told him. As he moved towards the kitchen door, he motioned for Harry to follow. “A couple Boggarts are around. They can't dispatch them the way we can, so it's something we need to handle. Those are about all when it comes to the pests part. Everything else they can take care of. From what I was told, we need to stay wary around plenty as pests have attached or the spells on whatever have mutated, so they're dangerous. They have some objects they want me to look over, more because they want to know if I want to keep them or they're odd and they don't know what they are. One they said they think is dangerous. It's nothing that'll take a ton of time to handle. We should be out of here within the hour.”“Good,” Harry nodded. If they finished quickly, it meant they could get home. They had already tended to the other houses with the warding stickers, so this was the last. Then they just had to deal with what seemed like the never ending stream of paperwork they had to fill out for various areas. While both of them hated filling the shit out, they realized it was a signal they were moving in the right direction and growing closer to getting the hell out of the country. They just had to keep the goal in mind and press on.
“What the hell is that thing?” Harry asked, arms folded over his chest, shivering from the malevolence all but rolling off the locket Sirius had suspended in midair. They had tended to five Boggarts and a couple other minor pests, so they were now going through what the elves saved back. Almost all of it had been binned as Sirius didn't want it. There were some bits he kept as the elves found some letters and pictures of his. They were already at Pooh Manor and would go with them when they moved.
“No clue,” Sirius told him with a shake of his head and a shiver. Keeping the locket suspended, he ran every spell he could think of on the damned thing, but the readings didn't show anything he knew. With a sigh, he finally lowered his wand and said, “I think this is something which needs to go the Ministry for them to sort it. It's obviously dark in some way and we can't get it open. Honestly? I doubt we want it open if our skin is already crawling from the feelings. With what my parents collected, I think it's best to let experts have at it rather than us try. If we do get it open, who knows what we'll unleash. We can pack it up then we'll send it off to our Solicitor. He'll know where to send it so it can be tended to. We don't want to chance calling in the Ministry ourselves as we would have to let them in house. I'm sure it'll cause more problems than we want to deal with if we do.”“Good call,” Harry nodded. “Yeah, whatever it is—we don't want it around. I'm sure some of the pests we've seen are attracted to the magic on it.”“I agree,” Sirius nodded, quickly packing the nasty object in a box then layering on every protection he could think of. “Quill a note for our Solicitor and make damned sure you tell him not to open it. He'll know how to go from there. I'll ensure its sealed enough no one, like his secretary, can get into it. Then I'll include the spells I used in the letter so whoever he sends it to can get into it.”“Consider it done,” Harry said, pulling out some parchment he was using to keep track of what they needed to take care of in various houses. “Yeah, it's a nasty piece of work, whatever it is.” He added, shaking his head as he explained the issue the best he could with all the details he could manage.
When he finished, he passed the parchment over to Sirius so his husband could include what he had done in the letter. “You don't remember anyone having it?” He asked, though it was doubtful with as long as Sirius had been out of the house and the multitude of what he considered just junk all over the place.“Never saw it before than I can remember,” Sirius told him honestly after finishing the instructions and attaching the letter to the package. “With everything around, though, I might never have noticed,” he admitted after summoning an elf and sending the creature off with the box.“True,” Harry said, glancing around, feeling better now that the locket was out of here. “Anything else we need to take care of or are we done and just letting the elves have at it?”“We're done,” Sirius assured him. Then he chuckled and added, “Until we get home. We then have to tackle all the crap waiting for us there.”“And there is a ton,” Harry groused, though focusing on the thought of the faster they finished, the quicker they could get the hell out of this mess and go about their lives.“There is. Which means we need to get on it since some of the bits are areas we need to handle, fast, like the crap for the Solicitor to handle. Those bits we need in place to protect ourselves and stop some of the shit going on before it grows worse.”“True,” Harry grumbled. “We best get home and tackle it then. Let's stop and grab something to eat then go home to take on more of the mind numbing paperwork.”After clapping Harry on the shoulder and agreeing with a laugh, Sirius guided them out, keeping watch for anything dangerous as they headed towards the door. “Oh yes, but we'll take time to have some fun tonight to counterbalance whatever. And we'll sit down and plan out some kind of trip somewhere to enjoy ourselves over the next few days to get away for a bit so we can relax. We'll do something Muggle, of course, as we don't want to chance going among our kind. It means we'll have to figure out what we want to do.”“Normally, I would say take in some of the bits here in London,” Harry told him, allowing Sirius to guide him along. “With what's going on, though, I wouldn't chance it. We've heard the evil arse is even going after Muggles in populated areas. It'll be better if we go elsewhere I think.”“Very true,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “Let's see what we can find. We always come up with something, even if it's odd. Not to worry.” Then he began asking Harry if there was anything he could think of he wanted to do as they made their way to the front door while looking around to make sure they had everything taken care of they needed.
After another read through of what they wanted in the statement everyone was asking for, Sirius nodded then sent it off to their Solicitor. The man would reword it, of course, to make it sound good, but he and Harry just wanted it known they meant what they said and wanted left alone until they exited the country again. He was sure it would cause plenty of howling and the press, especially the Prophet, would go after them, but it would be out there.
When they finished that bit, he did agree to the order against Albus to keep him away. While he doubted it would do any good, as the old man would just get one of his minions to try with them, it kept the old goat from the most overtures. Anything to throw him off was their thought. While he pondered one against Remus, he decided against it for the simple fact he wanted to have at him again. He would see there and at least wait. After finishing what he was doing, he leaned over and looked at what Harry was writing. He knew his husband was taking on writing to Hermione and setting up the meeting. As they didn't want it noticed, Harry was using the same trick Hermione had with attaching the letter to the normal one. He seemed like he was doing fine with it. “Need help or do you have it?” He asked as Harry wrote away.“I'm good,” Harry nodded, putting the finishing touches on the normal letter after having finished the hidden one. “Let's see what she has to say and go from there. As hot as she sounded in the other one, I bet she will.” After tossing the quill on the table, he leaned back with a groan. “If she won't do it this way, we'll find another, because we need the information she can give us to help keep us out of this mess.”“Very true,” Sirius nodded. “We'll manage. Just might take some work is all.” He then glanced at the stack of letters Harry had read. Most, he knew, were read, Harry rolled his eyes then vanished them. It was his assumption the ones left were from various Weasleys. “Anything we need to know in the other ones?”“No, not really. They aren't discussing the Order bit, but are putting out feelers to get together. While I'll write back, especially to Ron, I'm not agreeing to any meeting with them. We know they are close to the old man, so it'll factor in somehow.” Snorting, he then grinned and added, “Ron's whinging about several bits, including that he found himself in hot water over the bit in the Alley and his association with the Order. While he didn't blame me, you could tell he's not happy about it as he was caught and called on it. I ignored that part of it and just did the mundane. While I'll write, I'm avoiding any topics which are touchy. Ron is already asking where I was and all that. Very much not getting into any of it with him though I doubt they can do anything to you about it.”“Good,” Sirius nodded, though grinning and chuckling about the Ron bit. “We'll just do whatever to put them off and go from there.” With a sigh, he added, “I bet you want to see them, but its best you don't, Harry. Too many questions we don't want to answer will come up. Not to mention the other side of this mess will probably figure you'll want to visit and keep watch or something. The evil arse can't be happy with us after taking out some of his followers and will want revenge. He has enough to go after you over, we don't need to add more fuel there.”“Honestly? I don't want to meet up with Ron or his family,” Harry told him softly. Before Sirius could say anything, he added, shaking his head, “I'm not the same person I was in school. The whinging alone makes me groan and roll my eyes. I don't think I could handle it in person. Not to mention I know what will come if I do. Its best I stay away as I'm sure, with what we know of the Order, they'll use it for some kind of excuse to try to pull me in. Ron won't like it, but all I'm sticking to is writing. It's something I don't mind doing. Maybe after this mess is over and we come back at some point in the future I might visit. We'll see. Until it's over and the bullshit stops, I'm not chancing any of it.”“I agree,” Sirius nodded, pleased his husband wasn't upset he wouldn't be able to see is old friend. “And don't let them draw you into a discussion on the war and ignore any attempts at recruitment. Don't even mention them when you write back.”“They try that bit and I won't answer them, period. I plan to make it damned clear in my letter back,” Harry told him. With a shake of his head, he added, “I'm not that little boy anymore and won't put up with it. We made our choice and they need to respect it just like we do theirs. If they can't, we won't be talking in any way.”“Good,” Sirius nodded. “You're right; if they keep pushing, you don't want to talk to them, even Ron. This is bound to end up plenty messy to start with that we need no one else trying to drag us in.”When Harry nodded, he asked, leaning back, “Have you any suggestions where we can go to have some fun? You were looking through some of the brochures we picked up.”“I vote Alton Towers,” Harry grinned. “It's plenty big with lots to do. We won't go today, but can set off early tomorrow and spend the day there provided we don't have something we have to tend to. The one in Blackpool sounds good too, so we can do it next. We should have fun. They have the normal type coasters and such, not the ones you don't like. There is also plenty else to do. As busy as they are, we'll blend in fine if we do the normal bits to hide ourselves.”“Sounds good,” Sirius grinned and nodded. “We'll take the normal precautions and make a day of it. It'll do us good to have some fun with the nightmare going on.”“My thought on it,” Harry told him with a chuckle. Then he looked around the table at all the paperwork there and sighed. “We still have a ton to take care of. How much more filling out do we need to do today, do you know? We have the basics and Gringotts crap tended to, but not sure what else is there.”“Some, but not as much as we've been dealing with,” Sirius told him, eyes lighting on the papers for Russian citizenship. “I want the papers for citizenship done as fast as we can manage. It might come down to we have to run like hell if this mess explodes, so I want it in place as much as we can get.”“Yeah, we need to get on it,” Harry said, straightening up. “How much is there, do you know? And how much more is coming?”“These aren't nearly as bad as what we're dealing with when it comes to the money bit,” Sirius told him honestly, straightening up. “The Solicitor has as much filled out as he can manage, so we just take care of what he can't then send it back to him.”“Good. The less we have to deal with, the better off we'll be,” Harry nodded, “Let's get on it and do what we can. How long will it take for this to go through, do you know?”Sirius summoned all the papers they needed and handed Harry the ones he had to fill out. “A year to get it through the bureaucracy,” Sirius told him, grabbing his quill. “Once we have it filled out and filed, it'll show it as pending and we'll have the paperwork we need showing we'll be granted citizenship and are just waiting for the final papers. It'll go through, easily, because of my family ties to Russia.”“Do we have to give up the British citizenship or will be end up dual like so many?” Harry asked distractedly as he started to read through the mass of forms.“Dual,” Sirius assured him. “Once it's granted, we can file the papers to give up our British citizenship. Let's see what plays out here before we decide on that end. Even if we keep it, we can claim the Russian for everything legal, what we want, and we can hide there with no fear of extradition. Even if the evil arse comes into full power, the Russian government won't hand us over, what we want.”“Perfect,” Harry nodded, grabbing his quill and starting to fill out where it was noted he had to tend to. “I'd still rather have citizenship elsewhere, but this is the most viable option.”“The others would take far too long and end up plenty dangerous as we'd be in limbo until it goes through. And it can take years as plenty have a clause you have to live there for so long unless you're claiming asylum,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “Until all hell truly breaks loose here and that git is in power, we have no shot at claiming asylum, so this is best.”“Understood,” Harry groaned, reading through the mess in front of him and filling out what was indicated. “We'll manage, like we always have.”“We will,” Sirius smiled. Then he went to work on his own mess, planning to finish it tonight if he could at all manage. After all, the more they had in place, the better off they would be, especially if they had to vanish fast and protect themselves.
Despite the chaos the day before caused, Remus spent his day not home. While he was with the others for a time, mostly to look good and keep abreast of what was going on, the afternoon was spent in Little Whinging. He was cautious, of course, avoiding Arabella, but he had nosed around slightly and asked some questions. Then he had observed the Dursleys for a time. All he had seen and heard bothered him greatly. Of course, Harry vanishing was old news and not talked about, but he had managed to talk to a few, making sure he was vigilant how he went about it. A few well placed questions, pulling out he had moved in not far off and heard about the topic, had him hearing plenty of information. And what he was told troubled him greatly.
While he didn't have the whole picture yet, what Sirius said was being confirmed from all he heard. Plenty in the awful little place were more than willing to gossip about the Dursleys, taking sadistic glee in telling him all the dirt and giving the history. He had a feeling part of it came from the fact that Dudley was now in serious trouble with the law over some kind of physical altercation with someone younger. From what he heard, this was just the latest in a long line of problems which stretched back from the time the young man was a child. No, not good. After coming home to his small cottage, he sat at the well worn kitchen table and sipped at a cup of tea, very troubled by all he heard. No, he didn't have all the information he needed on the topic, but it was a start and, so far, it shored up what Sirius shouted at him. As he nursed his tea, he wondered how to go about getting more information. The part with Albus—well, he didn't know. He could ask, of course, but wasn't sure if he would hear the whole story. And he sure didn't want to ask around too much as it would end up heard by ones he didn't want to know he was looking for information. As he turned the scant bit of information he had so far over in his mind, he was startled out of his musings by a familiar rap on his door. It was Tonks, of course. With her being on leave, she was bound to come over more often. Of course, he liked spending time with his fiance, so he normally didn't mind. However, he hoped to have some time alone to sort through all he learned. He wouldn't turn her away or ask her to return later, though. No, she was having her own rough time at the moment and probably needed to talk or just some reassurance. He would do so.With a tired groan, he stood and shuffled to the door. Yes, having her around would distract him from the dark thoughts he was dealing with. Some time not pondering how pear shaped the situation had become in the last 24 hours was needed and Tonks was the perfect way to keep his mind off what Sirius said to him. Once he spent some time with her his mind would be clearer and he could think better. Then he would pick the topic up and worry it some more. Maybe something would come to him about an avenue to gather the information he wanted to know.Smiling, he pushed aside the dark thoughts and opened the door, gesturing for the upset looking woman to come in. Tonks needed him, so he would help her then go back to his darker thoughts.
