Chapter 12
For the first time since they escaped, the three weren't working on the house that day. Instead, they were tending to other areas.
First off, the Librarian commandeered Severus to pry all the information he knew out of him on the Dark Mark. She was already looking into it and wanted to narrow down what bond it might be. As they needed all the help they could get in that particular area, he was more than willing to tell her all he knew and what he had observed over the years. They were probably going to end up spending hours working on the issue. While Severus was doing that, Harry and Sirius decided to poke around the rooms where furniture was stored to see what they might like to use. They were going to stay cautious in case there were pests lurking, of course, but they thought they had most eradicated. All of them thought it was best to just take a day off and do something else. They were still plenty tense after the day before, so it would do them all good. Eddie was going to keep an eye on both of them in case there was a problem and they needed Severus' help.Sirius decided to start at the top of the house and work their way down, summoning elves when they found furniture they liked. While they worked, he was going to take the opportunity to talk to Harry and make sure he was doing fine. He seemed like it, but this was a huge upheaval and he wanted to check. After opening the room then checking for pests, Sirius lit a strong Lumos so they could see what they were doing. Right off the bat, he saw an old Victorian looking settee he wanted to use for one of the parlors. It was amazing looking. Nudging Harry, who was looking around, wand out, he said, “I bet we'll have most of the furnishings for the house before we're done today.”“We will,” Harry agreed, looking at some of the amazing furnishings in here. While they were dusty and dirty, they were beautiful. “I say we have the elves take whatever we want down to one of the big parlors then we'll sort from there with Severus' help. You know he'll huff plenty if we go to decorating on our own.” The last was delivered with a big grin and snicker.“Good plan and you're right,” Sirius laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. After moving the settee over towards the door so the elves could grab it, he began poking around. Most of what was in here wouldn't be used as it was bits like old sewing machines, tailors dummies and other bits not needed, but there was some furniture he wanted.Harry stayed cautious as he moved over to a massive chest of drawers he liked and thought would look great in their room. While they thought they had all the pests gone, you could never be sure. Warily, he opened one of the drawers to make sure it wasn't damaged beyond repair then chuckled at the loud squeaks that came from within. “I found a big nest of Puffskeins,” he told Sirius, who was looking his way because of the noise. “Can you conjure something for me to put them in while I check out the drawers? They look fine, but want to make sure. I want this one for our bedroom.”After conjuring a rather large padded basket, Sirius came over and helped Harry move the squeaking nest of furballs into it, chuckling. “You can keep them as well,” he told him with a nudge. “We'll set up something in our room for them or other places. They'll work great for pest control.” Picking one up, hearing it squeak happily, he looked it over, grinning. It was a green color and rather fat, though not as big as Grover. A glance in the basket showed all the fluffballs were odd colors, probably from the food sources. “They're great. I'm sure we'll find more as it looks like they've had plenty to eat.”“They haven't lacked for food, that's for sure,” Harry laughed, moving more into the basket then checking the other drawers out. It was in great shape and he wanted it. “I think this will go wonderfully in the bedroom, don't you?”“It's perfect,” Sirius agreed as he moved it over by the door as well. Giving Harry a nudge, he said, “Let's see what else we can find. I'm sure Severus will love the stuff as well. It'll not only fit the scheme we came up with for the house, but suit his personality.”“It will,” Harry agreed, moving some bits to the side they wouldn't need or use. There was an old trunk he spied that he wanted for at the foot of the bed, so he was trying to get to it. He wanted to make sure it wasn't broken or damaged before getting his hopes up about using it.As he moved stuff around, looking over other things, Sirius kept glancing at Harry. Then, as he thought he had the junk they wouldn't use off to one side, he asked, “You doing good with this mess, Harry? I mean the whole house and getting out, not what we're doing now. You seem fine to me, but want to check.”“I'm good with it,” Harry assured him, wrinkling his nose at an old bench covered with some kind of hideous girly type fabric. Shifting it aside, he shrugged, “Less stressed, honestly. We have problems to deal with, no doubt there, but it's far better than putting up with what we had been. Not to mention worrying about you ending up caught then Kissed or Severus being exposed for what he is. We won't go into the nightmare the castle is. This is a better option, if you ask me.”“I tend to agree,” Sirius nodded, smiling a tad. “We worry about you, of course. You know that, though. While you're younger and adapt better than we do with so much, this is still hard. I'm sure all of us will end up going plenty barmy before the war ends and we can relax, but I bet you'll end up worst for that bit. You're the one who was used to getting out during the summer, having your friends around and all that. Severus and I can deal.”Harry stopped what he was doing and looked down, thinking over what Sirius said. After a couple minutes, he said, “I can deal with the being confined, especially since I'm with the two of you. We have this massive house to not only explore, but work on, something which will keep all of us busy. There's the outside to roam around. It has plenty of room with lots to do. Severus mentioned giving us driving lessons and such. Those will get us out for a bit. While we don't want to do the town thing too much, we can if we start getting barmy over this. Honestly? Would rather have this and deal than put on the act we had to in the castle. We know Dumbledore would be worse this year than before as he's planning whatever for the Horcrux in my scar. I trust you two to do the right thing by me with it and not plan for my death like he is. All he cares about is the Greater Good, not me, despite what he spouts. He doesn't give a damn about anyone, I don't think, and would sacrifice everyone if it came down to it.”After taking a seat on some kind of old bench, Sirius looked at Harry then nodded. “You're right. Severus would agree as well. We're just pawns, nothing more. He can profess he forgets and whatever, but he knows just what he's doing, like me and that house. I could tolerate it because Severus suggested the same thing and he did only have our best interests at heart. Then he made sure I was able to get out here and there. If it was up to Albus, I would have been confined to it, something about as bad as being in prison. You were the same way with the Dursleys. I'm sure he had a reason behind doing it and it wasn't to protect us. Maybe it'll come out now that we've vanished. Let's see.”“I don't think he has anyone’s 'best interests' at heart,” Harry told him quietly with a shake of his head. “He—well, he's—let's say he wants whatever to go just how he plans and doesn't care who dies in the process. Plenty of lives could have already been saved if he stopped some of this and just came out and told people what was really going on. Well, some of it. The Prophecy? If he told anyone just what it really said, he would lose most of his followers because they would realize it means I have to die.”“More I agree with,” Sirius told him with a sigh. “He's not as good and light as he professes or thinks he is. And he has plenty buffaloed into thinking he is, like most of the Order. Hell, I was leaning that way until I hooked up with Severus and heard plenty. While I get he's trying, as the Ministry is being foolish, there are better ways to go about this mess. I think he is just running plenty in circles. Guarding the Prophecy last year was a joke, honestly. None of us knew what it said and if we had, there would have been chaos over it. The only reason I knew part was Severus. The rest we had to have you send for a copy of. He was just dodging so much and not telling anyone what he was planning.”“I still think the avoiding me, the bit with not telling me anything while in Little Whinging to protect myself and so much else, was a way to draw me in,” Harry told him honestly, taking a seat on an old wing chair. He had to know we'd be curious and look into it as that was the pattern with what we did in the past. This time it didn't work, thankfully. Hermione and Ron did their bit and I pretended to play along, but didn't allow myself to end up drawn in. I think he wanted me to.”“I agree there,” Sirius told him with a sigh after thinking it over. “Severus and I tried all we could to fill you in so you didn't end up pulled in, but he was pulling some stunt, like the bit with not telling you why he wanted you to learn Occlumency. Thankfully, Severus knew and told you.”“Albus,” Sirius started with a sigh then trailed off, not sure how to word what he wanted to say. When a few moments ticked by, he picked up again, “I think most in the Order owe Albus something so they think he is great for what he did and they have uses for him. Remus is a prime example and so is Severus. He'll use them to death. Others of us, like me, didn't and would do our own thing, so he let so much go on, like not doing a damned thing for me when I got tossed in prison. He could have and should have known something was off. The evidence alone and what they didn't check for would have been something he howled over for anyone else. He didn't bother. Now? He can claim what he wants about not having the influence he does now, but he had enough to get Severus off. I think it boils down to he's been planning this shit for a long time and I would have been in the way. If you were with me like James and Lily wanted, you would have grown up differently and not been starved for the attention and affection like you were. My opinion was, and Severus tends to agree, he needed you to follow along so he could get you to do what he wanted in the end. Thankfully, we stepped in before he could manage and made sure you knew to protect yourself.”“I know,” Harry agreed with a sigh. “Look, I adore the Weasleys, we all know I do, but it was like he was shoving me at them and keeping me away from you. Like the bit after Cedric died and he sent you off. It was dung smelling, if you ask me. There were plenty of other bits. It was like he was dangling them in front of me like a prize of some sort, something he knew I would grab at, rather than offer me spending time with you.”“More I won't argue with you about,” Sirius groused, shaking his head. Then he grinned and told him, “Won't work now and it stopped last year, though he never knew it. It'll come out in the wash before this is over and we'll know the why, beyond what we do now. And I'm sure it all factors into you dying, like we've discussed. Won't happen. Let them all fight that arse and we'll stay safe. In the end, we'll get the Horcrux out and destroy it some other way. Not to worry. And you sure as fuck aren't facing that maniac. No shot in hell. The world wants him gone? They need to step up and tend to it, because you are out.”Then, standing with a groan, Sirius said, “Let's get back to it. We have lots of rooms to go through. If they contain stuff as good as this one, we'll have to sort through a lot.”“Or we'll have the whole house furnished and not have to order anything,” Harry laughed, standing himself. As he went back to it, Sirius reminded Harry, “If you need to talk about anything, write to Remus. It might not be as easy as talking to him in person, as you have in the past, but he'll do what he has with you. Either that or Severus and I will. I'm sure Red or Eddie would listen as well. It's hard, we know it is, so you might need to.”“I'll remember,” Harry smiled as he sorted through what was piled all over. He knew, of course, but it always felt good for the two to remind him.
Eddie had come up with Red to check on the two while Severus was busy. Because the ghosts felt like it was part of their duty to 'their boys', it was just something they would do from now on. Not wanting to disturb the two talking, as it was obviously personal, he listened to make sure they were fine then planned to vanish with Red and leave them alone. Until they heard the topic. The two of them were horrified by what they heard. And angry, plenty angry, over it. While they listened to the end, something he would tell Sirius and Harry later, they then left, both not sure what to do.
Stopping downstairs, Eddie said, highly upset, “We need to find out the story behind what they discussed. I'm not sure how, though. I'll talk to Sirius alone later to let him know what we heard and have him tell me his take on the matter. The rest, when it comes to Harry—no, this isn't right!”Red looked furious, hands clasped tightly in front of her, then huffed, “People are horrible, especially the ones who profess to do the right thing then use those who help them. I'll talk with the Blue Lady and fill her in. Yes, poor Harry needs mothering and a confidant. She will do quite nicely.”Though still irate, she added, “Talk to Severus as well. I'm sure he has a take on this—debacle the other two don't. He was in a position to gather information the other two weren't. And he needs to know what we heard.”“I will as well,” Eddie assured her. Then, quietly, he added, “If they are right about the Horcrux, we need to help them find a way to rid poor Harry of the awful—thing. No, he needs it out of his scar! I know not how, though. All I know is what they are.”“Another topic we'll bring up to the Librarian,” Red assured him, anger not abating. “If anyone can find a means, it's her. Just give her time. We do want to ensure poor Harry is safe from its' malevolent effects, though. Check with Severus on that topic as well.”“Oh yes,” Eddie told her with a vigorous nod. “I'll talk with him tonight after I confer with Sirius, never fear.” Then, straightening up and looking determined, “We have work to do, a lot of it. Our boys are hiding for very good reasons and I'm sure we've not heard all of them, so it's time to do all we can. Let's get to it.”After Red nodded then floated off to talk to the Blue Lady, Eddie then headed off to talk to the Mad Monk. The Monk, because of what he knew on some darker topics, might have ideas and suggestions they didn't on how to handle this mess. He would see what the ghost said and if he had ideas were to look then would go from there.
Harry was seated on the very cleaned up settee they found in the first room they explored. And he could now see what Sirius adored about it. It was great looking. The elves had cleaned everything up, including this. It was not only a dark wood, but had a dark purple plush velvet covering and was comfortable. At the moment, he was alone, sipping a butterbeer, while Sirius went to retrieve Severus so they could decide on what to do with all the furniture they found. And they had found a ton they loved and wanted to use. The elves assured them they could not only clean it up to where it looked new, but change whatever they liked, such as some of the fabric. Since they knew Severus was tetchy about so much and how it looked, they weren't going to do it alone.
As he sipped his drink, he grinned at the huge basket of Puffskeins. As Sirius said; they found a ton and he loved it. The humming noises they made were quite soothing. They'd find some way to keep them comfortable, though Sirius said to spread them through the house for pest control with a tracking spell on them so Harry could find the furballs when he wanted to. It was fine with him and he liked them already. As he was petting some of the creatures on the pile of them, he jumped slightly when a voice he didn't recognize said his name. Immediately grabbing his wand, he leveled it in the direction of the sound then relaxed when he saw another ghost floating in the doorway. As she was one he didn't recognize and was smiling at him, he assumed it was one Eddie mentioned. After lowering his wand and relaxing, he nodded to her and said, “Hello.”“Hello, Harry,” the Blue Lady said, floating in then taking a seat on a chair close to him. “Sorry to startle you. My name is Queen Jane Seymour, though you can call me the Blue Lady.”“Glad to meet you,” Harry grinned. Another Queen of England! He was seriously impressed.“I thought you and I would get along well,” she told him, still smiling. “So, I wanted to introduce myself and just talk a little.”“Sure,” Harry said with a nod, still grinning a little.“Those are a rather large mound of Puffskeins, aren't they?” She observed, looking at the basket of the creatures, figuring it was a good place to start.“We found them all over while looking for furniture,” Harry chuckled, reached out to pet the creatures again. “Sirius suggested we use them for pest control and said I could keep them.”“They are ever so calming, what with the humming,” she told him with a smile. “And quite harmless, unless you're bits of food. They make wonderful pets.”“They're great,” Harry admitted, chuckling. “I can now see the attraction some have to them. All we have to worry about is my owl thinking they are a snack of some sort, though I think they're a bit big for her to ponder.”“Yes, they've not lacked for food, that's for certain,” she chuckled, taking in the size of the creatures. “Eddie told me your parents died in the last war among our kind?”“Yeah, their deaths ended the war,” Harry sighed, looking a tad sad. “It's a complicated bit to explain, but they died defending me from the evil git.”“I'm ever so sorry,” she told him, looking sad.“I don't remember them,” he told her honestly with a shake of his head. “I was too young at the time.”“You were raised by your aunt and uncle then? At least that's what I think Eddie and Red told me,” she said. What she wanted was an overview of his life and how he was raised so she could determine how to best go about helping him. The more she knew, the better she could understand his end of the situation.“Yup,” Harry nodded. Then he gave the names of them and his cousin. Her foot in the door, the Blue Lady kept talking to him, pressing just a little, but not too much, to obtain the information she wanted before Sirius and Severus came in. Yes, she was sure her and Harry would get on famously. And Eddie and Red were correct; if there was anyone in the world who needed a little mothering, it was Harry. And she would gladly do so.
