Chapter 11
Albus was rather—disturbed and slightly upset by the letter he held. The three who returned weren't biting at his hints about so much or giving up information. Oh, he could tell Remus penned the response, but assumed all three had read it as Remus made mention of them. And he wasn't biting at the hints. As intelligent as Remus was, not to mention the others, he should have picked up on them. Well, them 'not getting it' was one scenario and the option he wanted. The other was they were ignoring his hints and refusing to bite. He certainly didn't like the latter.
With a heavy sigh, he tossed the letter on his extremely cluttered desk and leaned back with a tired groan, eyes going shut. He didn't need this complication on top of all that was going on with the war and other areas. No, he needed their help. Well, he needed Remus and Sirius' help. Harry—yes, he was needed, but in another way. He also required information from the three to start planning what was needed and to talk to them. Remus—well, he wasn't biting when it came to a meeting either. Arthur told him the three made it clear they weren't staying in the UK. They were just here to set up the business then leaving again. While it wasn't the best case scenario, the time estimate they gave would be enough, if he kicked off now and planned. Them not taking the bait wasn't helping. As he looked at his desk, eyes being drawn back to the letter he tossed on it, Albus began to twiddle his thumbs. He needed to draw them in, now. And he needed information only they had. While most of what they did while gone wasn't a concern, a feel for Harry and his personality was something he had to have so he could judge which way to maneuver him into the place they all needed him. From what Molly and Arthur told him, Harry had changed, a lot. More than they could have ever imagined. He couldn't make this work without getting a feel for where he was and the dynamics of the relationship. His assumption was Remus and Sirius were together and Harry was something akin to a son. At least he hoped. If that was the case, he could manage. All he needed was information. And most of it was about what happened with Harry for all those years. It would heavily affect everything in this fight. He needed to know, now. He couldn't plan without it.Of course, he would let Molly and Arthur do what they could when it came to gathering the basics, but he needed more. And he needed to pry it out of them personally. Rather than dance around and let them go slowly with gathering what they needed, it was time for him to step in and get the answers in a more direct way. As he was certain Harry returning would set off a huge chain of events and make what was happening all the worse, they needed to prepare and plan. Though the three were bringing a means to help them to the table, they could help more another way. And he planned to ensure they would, whether they knew it or not.Plan forming, Albus straightened up then grabbed a quill. Yes, it was time for being blunt and not dancing around what they needed to know. While he would employ tact, he would use a more direct approach and lure them in such a way. After all, they had to want information to protect themselves. He would give them all they needed while garnering what he could use along the way.Putting quill to parchment, he began to write. This would be a long letter, but it was the best way he knew to get the information they all desperately needed and to press on from there.
While Harry fiddled with the devices Plato had sent them for the signal and to aid the speed, Remus was helping Sirius sort through the mail. There was a ton here and most were bits they had to handle for the business. Others were personal, such as letters from the Weasleys. Harry had not only letters from his friends in the States, but Ron and Hermione. They decided to handle the business part first as he was certain there were areas they'd have to dance around. He was always needed to help with those as he was masterful at wiggling around and making areas sound good without giving up anything.
After hunting through the massive stack of parchments yet again, Remus put a halt to what he and Sirius were doing then set to sorting them into piles so they could at least find the basics. “We need a better organizational system,” he muttered as he worked. “We can't keep going like this, Sirius. And we need to focus on one task at a time. If we keep going how we are, we'll just end up mental and you'll be snarling.”“We do,” Sirius grumbled, summoning file folders from his study so they could start sorting.“I think we need to prioritize,” Remus sighed. “Which do we need to tend to first; the Ministry or the other part?”“The Ministry as we have to start with the wiring,” Sirius told him, taking the folders when they sailed in then dividing them in two and passing part to Remus. “The other is already in the works. The hiring we'll have reports on as they find ones they want. It can take a backseat to what we have to do with the Ministry. And we need to send parts of this, like the tax breaks, incentives, contracts and the like to the company Solicitor. Those he's taking on.”“How long before you have what you need hooked up and running?” Sirius asked, looking at Harry. Some of these bits needed faxed so they could start before he owled the originals.“Give me a half an hour,” Harry told him, not looking up from what he was doing. “When I'm done, we'll have as strong of a signal as we did in the States and the data speeds like those as well.”“Good,” Sirius said, pleased. With all he had to send off to plenty, he needed the best connection they could get. “This means I can send most of this off to the right people so they can get on it.”As he sorted, Remus said, tone distracted, “Once Harry finishes and is ready, I say we have him take on the mobile part to at least sort them. He knows what is urgent and what can wait. We'll tackle the Ministry end.”“Fine with me,” Harry told him as he focused on installing what he needed to on the phone.“We'll do that,” Sirius agreed with a nod as he, too, began putting things in order, stuffing them in folders so they at least knew what was where. “This is going to take us most of the day, honestly. Some of this needs tended to right off the bat so they can start.”“Between the three of us, we'll knock it out,” Remus assured him. “We knew it was coming and can handle it. Nothing to worry about. It isn't like we have commitments of any kind outside the house which need tending to.”“It's just a tad overwhelming since it's all hitting at once, though we expected it,” Sirius admitted with a sigh and shake of his head while he put everything in some kind of coherent order.“Not to mention this isn't something we've really done before,” Harry added, focusing on his phone. “We've done parts, but not the business end. While we know what we're doing and can call for help if we need it, it's just the idea.”“True,” Remus conceded as he worked. “We'll manage, just like we always have. If Plato didn't think we could handle the situation, we wouldn't have become partners in the venture.”“I know,” Sirius grunted as he finished off one of the sizable stacks and grabbed the next.“Is there anything else we need to handle today, aside from this?” Harry asked, looking up as his phone installed several bits.“Not that I know of,” Remus told him with a smile. “Just relaxing when we finish. Well, unless something crops up in this mess we have to tend to.”“There shouldn't be anything,” Sirius told him distractedly. “Everything outside the house is being tended to. The workers we already have are in the country and hard at it. We have the managers going already. While the phones should arrive in the next day or so, if they haven't already, they are in a safe place where no one can get to them. The techs will take on the programming when they arrive. When it comes to the guys doing the real work to set up the networks, they're just settling in and are waiting for the go ahead from us. We're good when it comes to not having to venture out until it's time to inspect what's ready.”“Which is good. It means we can hide for a while longer,” Harry added distractedly.“Until someone exposes we're back anyway,” Remus said softly, shaking his head as he worked.“That—we know it'll happen,” Sirius grumbled, continuing to sort parchments. “As long as we stay in the house and make sure we aren't seen until it's time to tend to matters, it won't bug us. All we can do is wait and see how long it takes, hoping it holds off as long as possible.”“If this Rita Skeeter is looking into the phones, it's coming sooner rather than later,” Harry tossed out there as he finished installing what he needed and was running tests. With a grin, he nodded and told Sirius, “Its working. Have the best signal we can manage.”“Great!” Sirius said, relieved. Then he sighed and agreed, “It is. We're just hoping to hold off as long as we can.”After putting his phone aside, Harry asked, gazing around at all the stacks, “What am I doing to help here?”Remus pushed the folder dealing with the mobiles and the store over to him and said, “Sort through those and pull out what needs handled right away then put them into relevant piles. We'll add as we find whatever.”“Will do,” Harry told him, setting to work. While this bit wasn't the most exciting whatever in the world, it was helping, what they needed. The more they worked together to get this done, the better off they would be.
“I need a bit of help with these letters,” Harry told Remus as he sat down on the settee with him. It was after tea and Sirius was in his study on the phone with Plato dealing with business. As they were done with what needed handled, he was tackling the personal end. He had already written to his friends in the States and was now attempting to deal with Ron and Hermione.
“Who are they from?” Remus asked putting aside the book he was reading and holding out his hand for the missives.“Ron and Hermione,” Harry grumbled as he leaned against Remus, arms folded over his chest. “They aren't even being subtle about the questions. While I'm sure they want to know for themselves, whatever I say will end up passed along to that old man as well.”“Hermione is showing more tact than Ron, that's for certain,” Remus told him distractedly as he read through the letters.“How do I handle this?” Harry asked, a heavy sigh in his voice. “I can't just ignore some of it as they are asking directly, not dropping hints. Well—I can ignore it and refuse to answer, but we know what will happen when I do.”“I don't know,” Remus admitted, shaking his head as he finished the letters. “Let me think,” he added then pondered it.“Only thing I could come up with was telling them part of the truth; I was taken from Privet Drive,” Harry told him. “I won't go beyond saying that, though. If I do, we know what's coming after I say it.”“True,” Remus grumbled, shaking his head. “While Molly and Arthur wrote and dropped hints, they weren’t this overt.”“How about I say I don't want to talk about it?” Harry asked. “It'll buy time since we know it's coming out eventually.”“I would say use the 'you don't want to talk about it' and avoid the questions from here on out until we're forced to face them,” Remus agreed with a nod, passing the letters back. “We'll deal when it comes out, or at least parts.”“Will do,” Harry nodded, taking the letters back and looking at them. “I don't like this,” he said softly, shaking his head. “And I don't want to deal with it. Hermione—you know, I remember what her and Ron were like and dealt with it at the time. I've been away so long I'm not sure if I can anymore, Remus. The girls aren't like this. When I say I don't want to discuss something, they leave it alone. It's coming down to I've changed, a lot, and don't want to go back to how it was. And I don't want to take the questioning.”“Don't then,” Remus told him, slipping an arm around Harry's shoulders. “Tell them just what you said. If they want to reconnect, they do it on your terms and make it clear there is plenty you won't put up with anymore.”“They were really the first friends I ever had and I want them around, but I can't take this anymore.” Harry muttered softly, leaning more against Remus. “And I don't want to have to adjust to it. I've changed too much to tolerate some bits anymore. These are part of them.”“You need to tell them that as well,” Remus told him, holding him close. “If they are truly your friends and want to really reconnect, they'll understand and adjust.”“I don't think they will,” Harry told him, voice lowered. “And I think it bothers me that I know they won't. I went through a lot with both of them, but they don't seem to have changed much, other than maturing. Ron's mention of my clothes and phone then how they were expensive tells me he hasn't. Hermione—she's picking up like she last saw me a couple days ago and is being bossy, demanding answers the way she always used to. While she's being subtle about it, it's still the same 'you need to tell me because I want to know' bit as before. Knowing what they were like, I don't see them handling me telling them it has to change and I'm not the same.”“True,” Remus admitted, leaning his head against Harry's. “There is also the fact you can't go out on your own. We've all decided it's not wise. Even if you're with them, it's not happening.”“Which they don't know either,” Harry admitted, eyes going shut. “Yeah, they aren't going to like what I have to say.”“It is their issue, Harry,” Remus schooled gently. “They, better than anyone, know what's going on here and how bad it is. They also probably realize how much danger you're in. While they can go about their lives like normal since they've developed a way to protect themselves, you can't. Those in the Order are in danger, we all know they are, but it won't be anything like you are. Sirius and I will be right up there with you because of our attachment and the phones. It's not possible for you to do what they are. At the moment, most don't know you're back, which makes it easier. The moment it becomes public knowledge, it'll make it far worse and you'll be in danger. You need to make those points clear to them.”“Can you help me word it?” Harry asked, glancing at the letters he was holding though not moving from where he was. “I don't want to hurt their feelings if I can at all help it, but I don't see a way of saying some of it without doing so.”“I don't think there's a way to manage that either,” Remus told him honestly. “We'll try, though. Between the two of us, we'll manage to minimize it the best we can. And if they can't accept this, it's their problem, not yours and you don't need them in your life.”“Is it bad that I don't want to reconnect with them because of the problems I know it'll cause?” Harry asked, voice just above a whisper.“No,” Remus told him honestly. “You've had a life full of stress until we settled in California. By reconnecting, you know it'll bring part back and don't want to deal with it. Most could easily understand why you don't want to. And this will end up the more adult form of stress than what you had in school. You can't go on grand adventures anymore and have to protect yourself. You also realize by reconnecting they are going to try to drag you right back into the middle of the war. I think most would understand your reluctance.”“I'm not that little boy anymore and don't need this in my life. What's going on is bad enough. I don't need more dropped on me,” Harry told him with a sigh, eyes going shut.“Something we can easily appreciate,” Remus agreed with a nod. Then, smiling, he said, “Let's go sit at the table with some hot chocolate and find the best way to word this. We'll then send it off and prepare the best we can. After we finish, we'll drag Sirius away from the mind melting paperwork so we can watch a movie together before bed.”“Sounds like a plan,” Harry told him with a smile though he didn't want to face the responses. He would, though, then they would press on.
Harry bolted upright in bed, snagging his wand before his eyes were even open. Since his contacts weren't in, the world was a big blur. Mind still filled with the imagery of the dream, he was panting heavily. Then, when someone touched him, he leveled the wand in their direction, panicking slightly. It wasn't until he recognized both Sirius and Remus' voices that he slumped and lowered his wand, rubbing a trembling hand over his face. It was a dream, a very bad one, but just a dream.
“Harry? Are you fine?” Remus asked, scooting closer since Harry's wand lowered. Seeing him tremble, he assumed it was just a dream like he had in the past.“I'm good,” Harry mumbled, willing the shaking to stop, sucking in deep gulps of air to clear his head. “Nightmare,” he said shortly, shaking his head.Sirius scooted closer and wrapped an arm around Harry, holding him close. As he did, he summoned Harry's glasses, the ones he used at night or if his eyes were irritated. Handing them over, he said, “Want something to drink?” As they'd dealt with these before, though years ago, he knew what to do.“Water would be good,” Harry told him, slipping his glasses on after they were handed to him. After blinking rapidly to adjust once they were on, he looked around to assure himself they were in their bedroom at Grimmauld Place and nothing was off. While it seemed a little foolish to him, he couldn't help it. The dream was a vivid one and it scared him. When he was sure he was where he went to sleep, he glanced between Remus and Sirius to make sure they were fine. As expected, they were, which made him feel better and his heart rate to start slowing.Remus took the glass when the elf popped in then handed it over to Harry. After the youngest of them took a drink, he asked, “The usual bad dreams?” He knew from times past Harry's nightmares usually involved Voldemort and his Death Eaters.“Yeah,” Harry mumbled, downing more water, now wide awake. “A bit worse than normal though,” he admitted, shaking his head then passing the glass over to Sirius when he had his fill.“Understandable there, what with our situation,” Sirius admitted with a sigh, putting the glass on the bedside table. “We're good, though. Nothing to worry about. The house is safe and we're protected in it.” These were the normal type of reassurances they used to give when the nightmares came and they worked. Though he wasn't sure if they would this time considering where they were.“I know,” Harry nodded, flopping back down with a groan, tucking his wand under his pillow once more. “Nothing to worry about,” he added, for both them and himself. Though he was awake, he couldn't shake the imagery of Voldemort going after both Sirius and Remus with him unable to help them.“We're right here,” Remus assured him, lying back down and draping an arm over him“Not going anywhere either,” Sirius added, flopping back down and curling up to him. “We're good, remember that.”“I know,” Harry replied softly. It did little to alleviate the fears which came from the dream, though. What happened in it was an all too real fear which could easily become a reality when it came out he was back. “We're good,” he added, more for himself than anything else, hoping the verbalization helped him sleep better this time around.“We are,” Sirius assured him, giving him a squeeze. “Nothing to worry about.” While he didn't know the details of the dream and wouldn't ask, he could take a damned good guess because of the current circumstances. Not to mention what could come.“As long as we're together we can face anything and come out on top,” Remus assured him. “Just like it's always been in the past.”“Yup,” Harry agreed, giving a deep sigh and shutting his eyes. While he would try to remember and keep it in mind, he wasn't sure it would help much.“Exactly,” Sirius told him with a nod. “We've faced worse and came out fine.”“We will this time as well,” Remus chimed in. “We know what we're facing and how to protect ourselves. No unnecessary chances.”“Nope,” Harry said, curling up to Sirius though pressing back against Remus.“We're good,” Sirius told him once more though shooting Remus a look. Seeing the same look back, he just gave Harry a squeeze. While he said it to reassure Harry, and all of them, it didn't mean there weren't doubts. Those—there were plenty.“Let's just get some more sleep,” Remus said, snuggling closer. “We have plenty to do tomorrow.” Like Sirius, he was worried about what was coming as well. He just wouldn't voice it yet.“We're good,” Harry agreed once more with a nod, though he sure didn't feel that way. He also didn't want to go back to sleep, though he would. All he hoped was the snake faced git wouldn't find out they were back for a while. He just wanted to hold off hell as long as he could, nothing more.
