Chapter 12
By the beginning of October, Sirius knew plenty was wonky when it came to what was going on with Harry. Most of it was rotten as well. He also realized it was going to take plenty of work to ensure Harry stayed out of the middle of people’s plans. While he was able to figure out some, most he didn’t have a clue about though he knew Albus was planning something.
Since the start of school, he had figured out quite a lot when it came to what he could do and people noticing. All of it pleased him. No one, including Albus and the paintings, could see him. The only iffy ones were animals. Fawkes sensed something when he was in Albus’ office the first time, but didn’t take too much notice. In trips after that, the bird didn’t react. Even with Albus present during one trip, the bird hadn’t twitched a feather. Good. This all meant he could wander at will. And wander he did.Harry quickly settled into a routine for what he needed to do and a schedule. Once he had it sussed out, knowing what he was doing then what to expect, Sirius didn’t need to help much. There were bits, of course, like homework and helping there or where to look for information, but that was all. Harry knew what he was doing with plenty, so it left just watching over him for people acting foolish. As there were a few, like Snape and Malfoy, he kept his focus there. They weren’t a problem for long. Like with Vernon and Petunia, it didn’t take much time for them to find other areas to concern themselves with, such as tending to their own matters after foolish choices backfired, and to leave Harry alone. Most others didn’t bother. Which meant he could leave Harry alone to go tend to whatever and just concern himself with what else was going on.One of the bits which pleased him was Harry had real friends for the first time. Dean, Seamus and the twins were great with his godson. They had grown close in the month since school started. In fact, he was surprised they had and Harry allowed it. Since it happened, he encouraged it all he could. While the four weren’t tight like the Marauders had been, they were getting there. Fred and George were good for more than just being friends. The two took on watching out for the other three when they could. This pleased him as well. It meant if he wanted to go check something out, he could leave Harry for a time with the twins and he'd stay safe. Perfect. While Harry was working with school, Sirius took the time to wander and learn what was going on. First thing he found out was both of them were dead on the Galleon about Quirrell. Something huge was off there. While he wasn’t sure what it was, he knew it was rotten. His only guess was it had to do with Voldemort and the stone in the school. He quickly figured out the stone was what Hagrid had picked up and Albus was guarding. From what he could gather, the teachers were devising a way to keep it safe. The three headed dog was guarding it for now with other bits put in place to help. Yeah, this wasn’t a coincidence. From what he could tell, Snape already knew something was wonky and he was watching the man like a hawk when it came to so much. It was even worse that Ron and Neville were curious and looking into what was going on. That wouldn’t end well. The next bit to tend to was the rat. While he wanted to do something on Halloween as a bit of poetic justice, he was going to take care of it now. Too much else was going on for him to plan for that date. By now, he had a plan in mind, so he would go with it. His thought was doing something this early on might throw people’s plans off. The more he could throw off plenty, the better off they’d be, all of them. It was just going to take some work.
“Are you going to tell me what you’re planning?” Harry asked Sirius, very curious. Classes were over for the day, so he had taken a shower and was getting ready to go down for tea. This was his normal routine, so no one would think it was off. Sirius had said he needed to talk to him before tea, so this was the perfect time to do so.
“It’s best you don’t know so people aren’t suspicious by any look on your face,” Sirius told him, holding Harry close while he dressed. “Let’s just say by the time tea is over, a certain rat will be tended to. At least partially. While I think death is a good punishment for him, not going that route. It’ll be in the hands of the Ministry before the night’s over.”“Let them handle him,” Harry said with a grim smile, tugging his socks on as he leaned against Sirius.“Best way to handle it,” Sirius agreed. “It should get me cleared. Won’t mean much as the world considers me dead, but I want it done.”“Same here,” Harry agreed, grabbing his pants to pull them on.“I’ll manage, don’t worry,” Sirius assured him. “Just don’t expect me around during most of the meal. When it starts, you’ll know. Make sure you look as surprised as everyone else. Stunned will work there.”“Since I don’t know what you’re planning, I’ll manage,” Harry laughed, wiggling around to put his pants on in a way so that he didn’t have to have Sirius let him loose. He adored it when Sirius held him, so he never wanted him to stop. It was just odd to dress this way, but he always managed.“Stick close to the usual people,” Sirius schooled. “Make sure you’re seen going in with them like normal, too. I doubt anyone would suspect you in this as I have a good plan for it that won't look odd, but better safe than sorry.”“I take you’re doing whatever in the Great Hall then?” Harry asked, wiggling into his shirt then doing up the buttons.“In front of everyone so there are plenty of witnesses and no one can deny shit,” Sirius said with an evil grin on his face. “Want to make sure no one, I don’t care who, can deny what’s coming.”“Perfect,” Harry chuckled. He wasn’t sure what the plan was here, but figured he’d love it.Since Harry was now dressed, Sirius gave him a squeeze then a kiss on the side of the head. “Right, go get with your friends and do what you usually tend to like always. Act as normal as you can. I’ll go get this started. Since I have to work with animals and drive them the way I want, it might end up tricky. Just expect fireworks.”“I can’t wait to see this,” Harry snickered, leaning back against Sirius for a few more seconds. Then, with a groan, he summoned his shoes so he could go.“You’ll love it, you have my word,” Sirius told him with an evil chuckle. He would, too, Sirius would make sure of it.“Good,” Harry said. Then, after tying his trainers up, he canceled the normal spells and slid out of bed then wandered off to find Seamus and Dean. While antsy to get down to the Great Hall so he could see this, it wouldn’t do to hurry anything along. Best to just go about this like normal.Sirius waited for Harry to leave then headed out himself. Cats were tricky to work with, so it would take some time. Though the one beast he was going to use would be fine as the creature seemed to sense him more than some of the others and it would be easy to guide the creature to what he wanted. This would just take time, especially since Filch’s cat would be involved.
Peter had a good life and he knew it. While staying in his Animagus form wasn’t what he had envisioned for himself, it wasn’t bad. He was well taken care of, ate well, was lazy, didn’t have to do anything and was in a house where he could overhear plenty of information he needed. Then he was in Hogwarts where he picked up even more. No one suspected a thing. After all, a rat was a rat. Plenty of people had rats for pets, so no one looked twice at him. The only ones who knew his Animagus form weren’t around to tell. James and Sirius were dead. Remus wasn’t around and wouldn’t be likely to turn up somewhere he was. It wasn’t perfect, but it was as good as he could get, so he went with it.
Back at Hogwarts with the youngest Weasley boy, life went on pretty much as it had since he allowed himself to end up being adopted by Percy Weasley. The only difference was he was in the dorm with James’ son. It was odd, and sad, as he did miss his old friends, though he pressed on, refusing to remember what he had done to cause their deaths. Doing so allowed him to fall back into a normal routine, making sure to avoid the cats in the castle. While cats were a general danger, there were a few around which were more so than normal. A beast one of the Ravenclaw girls had, named Malevolence, came to mind. He wasn’t sure what the deal with the black monster sized cat was, but suspected more kneazle than most. Whatever was going on there, the monster had it out for him. While he always managed to get away, there were a few close calls with that one. The same with Mrs. Norris. Both of them were cats he avoided at all costs. That night he was roaming around for food and to get out of the dorms. Since it was dinner time, the elves would put food out in various places for the pets in the castle. Since he wasn’t the only rat in the castle which was a pet, he was heading to the normal place the elves used for the rats, one which was hidden and kept them safe from the others as they were prey animals. As he scurried along, he was confronted with not only Malevolence, but Mrs. Norris and a couple other cats which were known for their predatory nature. Not good, very not good. This was a situation he had handled before, so he knew what to do. Quickly heading towards one of the many ‘mouse holes’ along the corridor, he planned to use the vast network of tunnels inside the walls to find his way to safety as he had done plenty of times in the past. It didn’t work. Each time he neared one of the escape routes, a cat was blocking his way. After a few times of this, he was panicked and just running to find an escape route. He didn’t care where it was, he needed somewhere before one of the cats ripped him to shreds. As he ran madly, barely staying ahead of Mrs. Norris and Malevolence, he spied the slightly ajar door to the Great Hall. While it wasn’t the best scenario, he would use it. There were enough people in there that he was sure someone would do something about the cats while he hid. He knew from experience there were a few holes he could slither into to protect himself without being seen. After deciding this was his best bet, he slipped in through the slightly ajar door and scurried along the wall towards the nearest hole. With the cats following right along, almost on his tail and catching up, he was panting, hoping to make it or for someone to spy the cats before he was caught.Wand out, Sirius was following the cats, having attached to the shadow of Malevolence, and guided them along. It didn’t take much, honestly, as the two didn’t seem to like Peter at all. Once they entered the Great Hall, he helped to keep them focused as the noise and all the people around were distracting to the two. Of course, as expected, the cats drew the attention of some at the staff table. He expected the gig would be up if he didn’t press this faster. Before anyone could do something about the cats, Sirius, making sure to stay as light of a shadow as he could in the shape of Malevolence, cast a spell at Peter, sending him towards the middle of the room at the front, right in front of the staff table. He then drove the cats right after the stunned rat. As the two pounced, he grinned at the shouts of some of the students whose attention was drawn to what was going on. Just as the cats were tearing into the rat, he cast the Animagus reveal spell, changing Peter back to who he really was.The deed done, as it was now chaos, he detached himself from Malevolence and headed over to Harry. Oh, this was going to end up great to watch.
Harry wasn’t sure what was coming, so he was slightly on edge, distracted and keeping watch as he ate. Though he made sure to participate like normal when it came to the conversation, he kept scanning around for anything off.
Just as he finished eating, talking about what to do over the upcoming weekend with his friends, Harry spied Scabbers scurrying across the floor in an almost panicked way with two cats hot on his tail. It was time. Eyes locked on what was going on, he then heard a few others in the hall mentioning the chase and saw McGonagall stand to tend to the problem. He supposed this wasn’t that big of a deal and had happened before.By now, several had seen what was going on, including Ron. As Ron recognized his rat and stood, sounding mildly panicked at what he was seeing, the cats pounced on the Animagus. It was then he transformed back. The chaos and shouting which followed made Harry want to grin. The traitor was caught. Sirius, of course, was once more by him, chuckling, as the blindsided teachers Stunned the man and Dumbledore ordered everyone back to their dorms while they dealt with the problem. While he wasn’t sure what was coming, he knew this was good.“They got him,” Harry chuckled to Sirius as they made their way back to the dorms.“Yup,” Sirius agreed, following along behind, grinning. “Going to vanish to listen in to what’s happening, so I’ll be gone a bit.”“I figured,” Harry told him, pleased with this. He hoped this would clear Sirius.“Once you get into the dorm, I’m going to head back down to the Great Hall,” Sirius told Harry. Oh, he wanted to hear the reactions and make sure this was handled right. It was a long time coming and he wanted to see it play out.“Fill me in later and I’ll keep an ear out for what’s said in the Common Room,” Harry told him as they climbed the last set of stairs towards the dorms. “I’m sure there will be plenty as he was with the Weasleys for so long.”“Good,” Sirius told him. Yeah, this would be great!
“Are they sure it’s Pettigrew?” Severus asked, shifting around in his chair in front of Albus’ desk. It was a couple hours after what happened in the Great Hall. Things were finally settling down once the Aurors and DMLE had been in and talked to not only all of them, but the Weasleys in the castle since the rat had lived with them for so long.
“It’s him,” Albus told him, a weary bent to his voice. “They confirmed it with spells.”“Sirius didn’t kill him then,” Minerva said, tone hushed and strained. The mere fact Peter had been in the castle and she saw him had her plenty upset.“No, he didn’t,” Albus confirmed. At the moment, it was just a meeting with the heads of houses about what happened because they were going to have to deal with those in their house before the night was over. They were all certain wild rumors were already flying, especially in Gryffindor because that’s where the rat had been, belonging to the Weasleys. “Not sure what all happened, but Tonks and Kingsley have been in contact. One of the people called to the Ministry was Remus. From what was explained to me, Sirius, James and Peter were unregistered Animagus, having learned while in school. At the time, all those years ago, it didn’t matter. It does now as it appears Peter used his form to frame Sirius.”“Are they going to clear Sirius?” Filius asked, looking around. “I mean—obviously he didn’t kill Peter and he died in that awful place.”“It sounds like it,” Albus told them with a heavy sigh, shaking his head. “It’s a moot point, obviously, as he’s gone and there’s no family left. And, ironically, the one who will ‘benefit’ from it is poor Harry. From what I know, he’s Sirius’ heir. It’s rather ironic, honestly.”“This should never have happened, Albus,” Pomona said with a huff. “Something needs done!”“I will do what I can in my capacity on the Wizengamot,” Albus assured her. “What? I don’t know yet, as we can’t undo anything which happened or bring Sirius back. I’ll ensure he’s cleared, though, once the Ministry is finished with their investigation.”“If they don’t cover it up,” Severus sneered, arms folded tightly over his chest. He was as off-kilter as the rest over what happened, not sure what to make of it.“Oh, I doubt they can manage,” Albus told him with a bit of a smile. “One of the Ravenclaw students had their camera with them. They had received it this morning for their birthday. They managed to snap several pictures of what went on. As they’re a seventh year, I’m sure they’ll be selling them to one of the papers. There isn’t a chance the Ministry can deny this with the proof everyone has. Not to mention there was a whole school full of students and teachers as witnesses. Yes, they’ll clear him and the public will know. I’m sure, by now, several parents have heard as their children will have written. Arthur and Molly are probably at the Ministry as well, because Percy had the ‘rat’ for so long.”“Good,” Minerva said with a tight smile on her face. However, though this was justice, it wasn’t enough. Sirius had suffered plenty before he died with the world thinking he was guilty. There wasn’t anything they could do to take back what happened.“Let’s work out what to tell students tonight. I’m sure we’ll be dealing with the fallout for a while to come as well,” Albus said, leaning forward. Yes, they needed to hash plenty out. Well, and he was going to have Minerva explain all of this to poor Harry. Now wasn’t the time for him to step in with Harry yet. It was best to let her handle it.
Sirius listened through most of the conversation then slipped out when they were working on what to tell the students. As he made his way down the hall then towards the dorms, he had a grin on his face nothing would wipe off any time soon. It had worked perfectly! Now he just had to wait. While it would be plenty of time before he could regain his body, the fact he’d end up cleared was something he wanted. So had Harry.
As he moved along, he thought he might pay both Remus and Peter a visit in the coming weeks. It was time both of them heard what he thought of them. If he knew the Ministry half as well as he thought he did, he was sure Peter was in for being Kissed over this mess. Yeah, he’d have to tend to him before that happened. Either way, both of them would be on the end of a right bollocking from him over so much. Especially Remus.Mind shifting to Harry, he couldn’t help but grin. His godson would love the news he was bringing. Though he was sure Harry had heard some of it by now from Fred and George, he’d adore the rest. And Sirius would love telling him. It felt good to have someone in his life who believed in him the way his friends had in the past. It had been many years since he had that and he loved it. It was even better that it came from Harry. As he hurried along, taking care and reminding himself to do the same when he entered the Common Room as it more than likely was chaotic, he pulled his thoughts away from Peter and focused on what else was going on. While one problem was now settled, there were plenty of others and they were probably far harder to handle. He could, and would, revel in the justice which was finally served, but had to remind himself there was plenty more at stake than just Peter. As he was damned sure bigger was coming and Voldemort was involved, he needed to focus there. Well, that and the general stupidity of plenty in the castle when it came to his godson. Yeah, he couldn’t lose focus now.By the time he saw the painting of the Fat Lady and was preparing to slip into the Common Room, Sirius was humming and smiling. He’d enjoy tonight before taking on what else he needed to worry about. After all, it wasn’t often a plan worked out so perfectly. He’d celebrate a bit by spending extra time with Harry tonight talking. Tomorrow he’d go back to focusing on the bigger picture.
