A/N: Okay so this chapter is one of my favorites so far, because I think I did some rather original twists that I haven't read *together* before. Thanks to everyone for the reviews so far. Apparently I did a bit of missleading; it wasn't supposed to read as those four entering the room together, but it's not a huge thing. I can work with it. There's going to be a few other chapters that are covering other information before that partially ties into this chapter. Hope I am keeping you all interested. ~.^
Chapter 12: Everything, FlippedSeverus stood in the Room surrounded by 12 students as they waited for him to pass around the potions and parchments. They each had their cauldrons, thoroughly cleaned of any residue last night, waiting to pour the potion in. Severus also had his own cauldron, curious to know what line his father came from as he knew his mother was from the Prince line. A few of the students, 2 seventh years and 2 sixth along with Miss Granger, would be presenting their results to Harry to use in his research. Draco was taking down notes, and Severus would have him continue to do so when the explanation from Salazar started.
Once the parchment and potion was passed out, Severus stood by his own cauldron, “Since we all agreed to do this at the same time, listen closely. You will pour the potion in the cauldron first, add seven drops of your blood, then unbind the parchment but do not unroll it, and place it inside the cauldron. It will take a few minutes for the parchment to absorb the potion; after it is done and the cauldron only holds the parchment, you may remove it and lay it on the desk. Using your wand you will cast Aperio Antiqua Familia and wait for the blue glow on the parchment to stop. Per our arrangement, only the 5 are required to show their findings, however you all may share with each other if you wish. There will be time for questions and discussion after everyone has finished looking over their parchment if needed; we will decided what to do with our information then. Ready? Begin.”
They each followed the steps Severus gave them and soon found themselves waiting for the blue glow to cease. A few of the students were shocked that the Professor would be participating, but wisely held their tongues. When ready, they each unrolled their parchment and gazed at their findings in mixed amounts of shock. Harry merely glanced at it quickly and rolled it up, he refused to show anyone; he would only trust this information to those he was closest with.
Severus himself was in a state of shock over his findings; initially he was debating on allowing Harry to use them, but now he only wished to show the results to a small group of people. He had decided to get used to the idea of having people around he could talk to comfortably without suspicion or fear of betrayal and this, shocking, information he needed to talk to someone about.
The students talked and shared their findings, not a surprise really as this bit of information was more shocking than many would have first thought. This Heritage potion showed mostly the direct links, however it did show siblings of their ancestors, just not whom they married and their offspring. As such many students found themselves comparing their results and ‘filling in the blanks’ on where an ancestral sibling branched off if they could. Of course the questions soon flew around the room the most predominant one being how none of the ‘muggle’ family members were, in fact, muggle, but there were questions about why the people they thought were their parents were not listed. Snape explained what he was told by Salazar, Hermione passed out the copies of Magica’s Law so that they may read at their leisure. After they gave assurances the books would remain in their possession, things began to quiet down. The five students shared their results with Harry, and Draco who was writing everything down for the other, and soon all but Severus, Harry, Draco, and Hermione remained; Tracey Davis stuck around long enough to ask a question of her Head of House before leaving. Once the door was closed the Room changed to include very comfortable plush chairs, a fireplace with fire and a large picture frame above the mantle, a small table beside each chair which soon held a cup of tea for each, and a circular table in the middle of the four chairs that held snack foods. They each sat in the chairs, while Severus first removed his teaching robes and sat, heavily, before sipping on his tea. Hermione looked at Draco with a raised eyebrow, who in turn gave her a worried look, while Harry looked at Severus in concern.
However Severus spoke up before anyone could mention anything about his behavior. “Do you have any questions, Miss Granger? About your results or the reasons behind it?”
Hermione thought for a moment, “Not as much, since it is easy to tell that the light blue names are witches and wizards and the dark purple names must be squibs. It settles in with my theory that magic can only be with magic, therefore disputing the claims of ‘half-blood’ and ‘muggle-born’ as those in question do not have a drop of muggle blood. It also reaffirms what I read in Magica’s Law about magic can only be with magic, but this test was to show proof to others who may argue the book is a sham.”
“Correct, Miss Granger; Salazar said you would be doing that test today and we each thought it prudent to be here, once we were given a painting to step to, and offer our knowledge.” Rowena looked at the girl and smiled.
“Oh speak true, Rowena, you like the rest of us are curious if there were any whom are our descendants.” Helga looked at the gathered four eagerly; though she had her suspicions she would say nothing of them.
Salazar snorted, “I at least know of two of mine, and there really was only three of the four that took the test. However I fear, dear Helga, your descendant is not among them. Not a one of them could pull off that yellow you so favor.” The other two Founders chuckled as the normally passive Lady thumped Salazar on the arm.
“Come on, we’re anxious here!” Godric had the least amount of patience when it came to information.
Hermione chuckled, she could guess Ron was a descendant of Gryffindor if she went just by their ‘patience’ alone. “In due time, Lord Gryffindor, first let us ask our questions. Why are you so anxious to know who your descendants are?”
“Dear child, isn’t that obvious? Our descendants will have a role in Hogwarts, shaping the classes and ensuring the proper education of the students. There seems to be much that has changed, for the worse, and it must be corrected.” Helga sat in one of the chairs in the painting; there were four and each had the color they favored. She must remember to give her thanks to Harry; the boy was ever so considerate in their request.
“The Board of Governors approves or disapproves of the Headmaster’s changes to curriculum; and as far as I know, everyone believes your lines to have died out.” Draco looked over to Harry, “Except for Riddle who made it known he was a Slytherin descendant, no one else has claimed such things.”
“Well it could be simply that these things went unknown; alright any other questions?” Rowena huffed at Helga’s impatience, she was eager as well but didn’t want to admit it.
“Fine, however I don’t…that is…So much of history was lost and well, I can see how my magical ancestor was ‘lost’ in history as she was unknown to her family.” Hermione fiddled and Draco grabbed one of her hands, he gave it a squeeze in support and encouragement. She blew out a breath, “My ancestor was named Andria Lee Hainse; the notes seem to indicate she was adopted into a Squib family after her parent’s death. I can only guess her birth was a secret and that her grandmother never knew of her.”
Harry had noticed while she spoke Snape’s head had jerked up and he was looking at her wide eyed. He rested his hand on the man’s arm and had a pair of onyx eyes looking at him. It made his breath catch to see the uncertainty and vulnerability in those dark orbs and he rubbed his thumb along Snape’s wrist in comfort.
Severus was shocked first at having a hand on his arm, his emotions currently scattered, and as he glanced into those emerald eyes, filled with concern and respect, he felt himself settle. He hasn’t let on to the young man how he feels, but he knew they had a type of friendship and often found comfort around him. Feeling the slightly calloused thumb rubbing over his wrist set a shiver down his spine, but he nodded his thanks and focused back on the conversation.
“Andria’s mother was Helena Ravenclaw…” She stopped upon the gasp from the painting and watched as the dark haired woman sat carefully in her chair.
“I never knew, I suspected that was her reason for running off, but…” She took a breath to gather her thoughts, “I gather the father was Marcus Woldrof.” She received a nod, “It would, of course, as he was infatuated with Helena. You must speak with Helena, let her know and find out the circumstances behind their deaths. I am glad to know I have a descendant.”
“Two.” The others looked at Severus surprised and confused, “Miss Granger, from which of Andria’s three children are you descended?”
“Oh, Alexander Hainse…Sir you are a descendant as well?” Hermione felt a bit odd to know her Professor had a similar ancestry as she.
“Yes, Caitlyn Searight nee Hainse.” He felt uncomfortable under the stares and glared at each, though they could tell he wasn’t angry.
Hermione smiled, “Well I’m glad it only shows the direct ancestry for your sake, Sir. I can only imagine the discomfort you would feel otherwise, knowing I had already agreed to share my findings of my own line.” She had noticed how Harry kept his hand on the Professor’s arm, but made no mention of it.
Severus felt relief that so far two Gryffindors that he is frequently around seem to understand him; it was odd, but he found he didn’t mind so much. Three if he included Minerva; however he nodded in agreement to her statement.
“How are we to speak with Helena Ravenclaw? Does she have a painting here as well?” Harry could remember how, before the Sorting, he thought Hermione would go to Ravenclaw. She still desired to know all she could, and he found her ancestry fit her well.
“I do not think she does, none was ever commissioned before her death; I had died not long after word reached me of her death.”
Salazar huffed, “She haunts Ravenclaw Tower often, though she has been seen elsewhere; you could ask Marcus Woldrof as well since he knows where she is nearly all the time.” His eyes saddened; the ghost had told Salazar his story once but knew it must be told again. It wasn’t his secret to tell, however.
“Oh, I don’t believe I’ve met his ghost before; as for Helena, she must be the ghost we call the Grey Lady.” Hermione looked to Salazar, since it seemed he would know where this other ghost is.
“Officially I’m sure you haven’t though he is known by the name gifted to him by students; my House knows him well. The Bloody Baron is what he goes by, now. Severus you have good rapport with him, perhaps it is best you speak to him. Do so in your quarters where it can be kept secret.” Salazar walked over behind Rowena and squeezed a shoulder, “It is good that you have two descendants that have branched well; a Gryffindor and a Slytherin.” He returned to his seat with a smile on his face at her indignant huff. He looked back towards the others, “Any other interesting information? Severus, Miss Granger, Mr. Potter?”
“Especially you, Potter; I saw how you quickly rolled up your parchment before even I could see.” Draco teased at his friend; he was still getting used to referring to him as Harry and friend, but he felt, lighter, knowing it was true.
“Well,” he rubbed the back of his neck, “Of course there was information I knew, and I really was only interested in my mum’s information, however I only glanced at it and decided it was better to wait until after everyone else left. This is not something I want just anyone to know about. Does anyone mind if Ron joins us? I mean, he hates being left out and all, and I don’t want to leave him out if Hermione knows.”
“I don’t mind, I need to speak with Ron anyway.” He flushed as three pairs of eyes focused on him, “We decided to find out if there was any truth behind our family’s dispute; I received the information and would like to let him know what I found.” He blushed more as Hermione beamed and whispered she was proud of him.
“I suppose it would make things easier to discuss without Mr. Weasley childish behavior at being excluded. He has so far proved he can keep that extraordinarily large mouth shut on important things.” Severus felt a tug of his lips at the pleased look on Harry’s face accompanied by the slight squeeze of thanks on his arm. He had forgotten Harry’s hand was there, but made no mention to have it removed.
“Dobby,” a soft pop had the creature before Harry, “can you ask Ron to join us in the Room? Don’t give any other details, just say ‘the Room’. Don’t let anyone else ask you where I am or whom I’m with, not even the Headmaster, Dobby.”
“Yes Sir, Master Harry Potter, Dobby will do that right now!” Another pop and he was gone.
“His speech has improved since I last saw him.” Draco recognized that elf, remembered how his father had ranted at how Potter caused him to free his own elf, “Harry, you really must share how you caused my father to release his elf one day.”
“Did he call you ‘Master Harry Potter’?” Hermione looked at Harry with a raised eyebrow and folded arms.
“Yes he did, Hermione. A few weeks ago Dobby asked to be my house elf and I agreed. He said Dumbledore was pressuring him to become his elf, though trying to make it sound like he was offering him to be a Hogwarts elf. Dobby was afraid Dumbledore would ask him to do horrible things to me as Lord Malfoy used to; to circumvent this I bonded him.” Harry just looked at his friend; though they informed her about the balance house elves need with Masters, Hermione still had problems with it. Thankfully she had stopped trying to give all the house elves clothes.
“Alright, I know I shouldn’t be so upset but I just don’t like someone having slaves like that.” She squeezed Draco’s hand in return to his thumb caressing her knuckles.
“It does take some getting used to, but don’t think of it as slavery so much. Sure there’s owners out there who treat their house elves like crap, but many treat them well and the elves and the family thrive because of the harmony. Harry’s a good sort, I doubt he could ever treat one horribly.”
“Thank you Draco,” Harry smiled at the blonde. Hearing the door open, they looked as Ron entered the Room and a fifth chair appeared.
“So what’s going on? Thanks for including me, by the way.” He smiled at each.
“We did the Heritage test, found out Hermione is a descendant of Rowena Ravenclaw.” Harry smiled at the look Ron gave.
“Well that’s no surprise; always thought she would’ve gone into Ravenclaw if not Gryffindor. I doubt that was significant enough to have Dobby tell me to come.” They all knew he was trying to be mature about it, but Ronald Weasley didn’t like to be kept in the dark about his friends.
Harry looked at Severus who decided to speak up, “I also am a descendant of Ravenclaw, and we will find out what happened to ‘lose’ this information over our family lines after a while. However it was because we asked Mr. Potter about his test that you were brought in.”
Ron took a moment to pick his jaw up off the floor; Snape just gave information, just like that! “Alright, though I’m curious to know more about how you both are related to Lady Ravenclaw but not each other…” He scratched his head in confusion, “or something like that. So Harry, what does your scroll say?”
Harry cleared his throat as he unrolled it to look at the top lines, and looked again, “Well, I had found out from Gringotts that I was second in line to claim the title of Lord Slytherin, and this test showed it was because my Dad descended from the Slytherin line at one point. It also shows that, while I have a connection to Lady Hufflepuff, it’s through female descendants and there are male descendants who have the rights to the title, many before me.”
“So you have connections to two of the Founders, that’s interesting.” Severus kept his face impassive, though he was curious. It was apparent that they only Hufflepuff trait Harry had was loyalty.
“Oh I thought someone had to be a descendant of mine! I’ve not doubt that Ronald had ties to you, Godric; I’ve seen that boy with some awesome temper.” Helga looked smug at Salazar, who merely chuckled.
“What else Harry, I can see something else is on your mind.” Hermione noticed the thoughtful look her friend sported.
“Well it also shows my Mum is also a descendant of Slytherin, though from Atreus’ daughter Sylvana McLaurie nee Slytherin. There is one other thing, something I was hoping the Founders can help explain and direct us to where the books we can get this information from is.” He waited until he had all their attention, “Why are there creatures in our bloodlines? I see silver extending down different parts of the ancestry, and I’m sure Hermione may even have some on her test, but just didn’t bring it up; however posting these results I’d also like to make sure I have enough information.”
There was silence a moment and Harry looked around. Severus had a thoughtful look on his face, which really was nothing more than a blank look, Hermione had unrolled her parchment and was looking at it closely, seeing how the blue and purple names denoted magical or squib. She kept looking to see how Harry came to the conclusion there was creature blood when she noticed the lines connecting the names. Some were a solid black under most names, a few were green or a green and black mix, but some had a silver line that connected to the spouse’s line; how Harry concluded they were creature bloodlines she couldn’t quite understand. It could be anything since the test itself didn’t give a legend.
Draco fought his normal reaction to sneer and deny the thought there could ever be creature blood polluting his blood. However he had once thought poorly of muggle-borns and just slightly better of half-bloods and here he was, not only surrounded by those he once despised for their blood (accept his godfather, of course), but finding out there really is no such thing as muggle-born and half-bloods. He forced himself to think about what that may have to mean, and how there are many magical creatures that are human-looking and really, would it be so difficult to imagine they could reproduce with human wizards and witches?
“Rowena, I think you may be best to explain this.” Helga looked at her friend with a smile, “Of course I can help explain the ‘how’ if need be.”
She nodded, “Very well. There are many different Realms that exist along with the Realm of Man, also called the Magical Realm by humans, and many of these have beings that are very similar to humans in both anatomy and reproduction that makes it possible to create offspring. Since those of each realms have magic of their own, the stipulation of magic can only reproduce with magic has no issue. Sometimes there is an offspring that has enough magic to pull forth the creature traits.” Her mouth twisted over the word, “It really is an insult to call them creatures, Mr. Potter, and the fact that many of those descendants may have their secondary magics active, yet are not animals, you must agree that creature just does not fit.”
“Yes Ma’am, I agree however what other term could we possibly use? Half-bloods right now denote a misconception and has a negative stigma, yet they may not be completely human, at least not by popular standards. I would prefer to use a term that would not insult someone just because of their ancestry…”
“Or should those Portals ever open and we are graced with those beings again.” Salazar interrupted, “Perhaps just the term ‘magical beings’ will suffice. It is what everyone is.”
Harry nodded and raised an eyebrow at Draco as if to say ‘aren’t you going to write this down?’
Draco snickered but jotted some notes down, “You’re falling into this role well, Harry. Already expecting me to write things for you like a secretary.”
“Well you do already have the notes there, Draco; besides I’m still getting used to writing legibly with a quill. I’d hate to ruin the notes you already have with my attempts at penmanship.” He sniffed haughtily and soon the two broke out in laughs.
Somehow they never noticed the unease that was slowly building until they all relaxed again.
“Perhaps, Salazar, now would be a good time to speak about the Realms; you mentioned them earlier to me.” Severus grabbed a biscuit and relaxed back in his chair.
