Family dinner again. Quiet, dark, well mannered. Dull. I miss the laughter of dinner at the Weasley’s. It’s one of those things where you don’t realize what you are missing until you see it. I always thought I had the perfect life. Money, manners, power. None of that has given me anything as an adult. Potter is an orphan, Weasley grew up poor, Granger has muggle parents. I was raised to judge, ridicule, and hate all of these things, these types of people. But now they have everything as adults. Family, friends, laughter, love, and acceptance. Other than the unfortunate issues of my parents being Death Eaters, allowing the Dark Lord into our home, and hating everyone; they were good parents. I know they love me and want the best for me but at this point in my life I want more for me.
We are sitting down to dinner and before we can start serving ourselves Mother makes an announcement.
“Andromeda wrote back! She said she would be willing to meet with me but she admits she’s still leery.” Mother is as close to excited as I’ve ever seen her. This consists of a smile pursed smile but it does reach her eyes. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen mother smile and show her teeth.
Father stiffens but I smile at her, a real smile.
“That’s wonderful. When are you going to meet?” I ask helping myself to some beef stew.
“Well, I never let myself believe that she would actually respond so I never put much thought into what would happen if she did. I’m very nervous all of a sudden. “She says as she places her napkin on her lap.
“I still don’t see why you are doing this Narcissa.”
“Lucius, I know your opinion on this, and I’m sorry that we don’t agree, but it is something I feel I must do and I want to do. I’ve had you and Draco with me all this time and I love you both very much. However, I’m lonely.”
I never thought of either of my parents feeling the same way I had felt. Mother deserves to not feel lonely.
“I think it’s wonderful. It will be awkward at first, but it gets easier.” I tell her.
“What do you mean it gets easier?” Father asks me.
“Well, I’ve become friends with Granger, Potter, and Weasley.”
“What do you mean ‘friends’?” he asks.
“I mean I see them on a semi regular basis and we get together, mostly for meals. In fact I was at Weasley’s last night for dinner. He married Granger and they have two children.”
Father’s cheeks started to color.
“I will not have you…” he started.
I cut him off. “I will not have you telling me how to live my life. I’m 28 years old, I own a shop, I live on my own. I’m finally living a life. I don’t answer to a Lord anymore. You are my father but you have no control over what I do. I have felt invisible for the last eight years; all of the people that I thought were my friends have left and will not talk to me. I’m finally happy. Why can’t that be enough for you? What are you holding onto? “
My voice was not loud, but it was firm. My parents have matching looks of shock on their faces with the exception of the tears brimming in mother’s eyes. I feel defeated. All aspects of my life refuse to align.
Father opens his mouth to respond but I cut him off again.
“How about you ask Andromeda to meet you at the Leaky Cauldron? It’s neutral.” I ask as I turn back to mother. “I’ll go with you if you want.”
“Oh, I don’t know if she would meet me if I took you. She may think I’m planning something.”
“I’ll ask Potter to go.” Father lets his utensils clatter to his plate in frustration. “He and Andromeda are close.”
She looks thoughtful at this. “That may work.”
“When do you want to do it?”
“Oh, I don’t know.” she’s looking nervous now.
“How about lunch on Monday? Let me contact Potter and see if he’s free, then you can send an owl to Andromeda.”
Mother places a hand over mine. “Thank you Draco.”
I excuse myself to Father’s study and use the floo. I hate talking this way, it hurts so much! I kneel on the floor in front of the fireplace and toss some floo powder in. “12 Grimmauld Place”
“Master Malfoy! So nice to see you.”
“Kretcher, how are you?” The elf is putting dishes away.
“I’m well Master Malfoy. Thank you for asking. What can I do for you?”
“Is Potter here?”
“Yes, one moment.” the elf disappeared and I sat there looking at table and chair legs.
“Malfoy?” Potter says as he hurries into the kitchen and crouches in front of the fireplace. “Is everything ok?”
The look of concern he has catches me by surprise and I’m touched.
“Ah, yeah. Everything is fine. I’m at my parents and Mother just said that Andromeda said she would meet her to talk. Mother is concerned about going. I said I’d go with her but she thought that Andromeda would feel it was an ambush. I said I would check to see if you could come too. We are looking at lunch on Monday at the Leaky Cauldron. So, would you be willing and able to come?”
“What time on Monday?”
“Is there a time that works better for you?”
“I have a meeting until 12:00 with Shacklebolt. I could meet at 1:00.”
“Mother has to check with Andromeda, I’ll let you know ok?”
“Well, even if she can’t make it. Do you still want to have lunch?”
“Yes. I’d like that.”
“Then I’ll see you Monday.” He grins at me as I pull out of the fireplace.
Mother sends an owl off straight away after I tell her. We continue eating and I notice that Mother has a small smile that doesn’t leave her face. She really is excited about this. I hope it goes well.
As I’m getting ready to leave the owl returns. Andromeda will meet my mother. Mother clutches the letter to her chest and lets out a single sob. I hadn’t realized how scared she was of this not happening. I hug her and she holds on to me tighter. I shoot a look at Father over her head. His face is a jumble of emotions; disbelief, fear, confusion. I wish he could just move forward.
“Come to the shop on Monday and we’ll go together, ok?”
“Thank you again Draco, for everything.” She leans up to me and I lean down so she can kiss my cheek.
“You’re welcome Mother.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
Mother is at the shop by 12:30. She goes to my flat to freshen up. I can hear her pacing upstairs. I sent up a silent prayer, ‘Please let this go well.’
At 12:55 we are leaving, her arm linked through mine. She stops just outside of the door and takes two deep breaths. “What if she doesn’t come?”
“She’ll be here, she’s coming with Potter.” I tug her through the door.
I see Potter first and head towards him. He turns and smiles. I jerk to a stop because I never knew how much Andromeda looked like Bellatrix. It’s unnerving.
“Mrs. Mallfoy, it’s nice to see you again.” Potter extends his hand and Mother looks unsure as to what to do. I give her a nudge and she shakes hands with him. “Draco, this is Andromeda.” Potter is making introductions and it’s odd to hear my first name from him. I extend my hand and we shake. The sisters look at each other. Mother is the first to break.
“Oh Andromeda. I am so sorry.” Mother is crying and we are all a bit shocked. She moves like she wants to hug her sister but stops herself.
“How about we find a nice corner booth.” Potter, the voice of reason. “Or would you two prefer to sit alone?”
“No.” From both.
Potter leads the way to a boot in the corner. Andromeda slides in first and Potter beside her. Mother sits first across from her sister and I sit across from Potter but keep an eye on Mother.
“Andromeda, there is no way I can ever express how sorry I am. I do realize how wrong we were. I also understand if you don’t want anything to do with us, but I had to take the chance.”
I see Potter reach over to grasp Andromeda’s hand under the table but she still doesn’t speak.
“Mrs. Malfoy, I’m sorry to interrupt, but I would like to thank you for what you did for me in the forest the night of the battle. I’ve never forgotten it. “
She looks at him, her eyes wide like she can’t believe he said it.
“My motives were purely selfish. Please don’t thank me for that.” she has tears in her eyes again.
“You may feel that way, but you said I was dead AFTER I told you Draco was in the castle alive. You could have made sure I was killed then. You didn’t. You saved my life. Just like your son. I know where he gets his bravery.”
Tears are running down Mother’s face. Her sister is looking at Potter. Mother looks at me and I take her hand.
“Sissy…” it’s just a whisper, but it’s the first thing Andromeda says to my mother. She reaches across the table and takes Mother’s other hand.
“Andromeda I’m so sorry about Ted and Nymphadora.” They are now holding both hands across the table, both crying.
I feel Potter’s knee against mine again and I look at him. He motions that we should leave now. I’m not sure. I’m feeling very protective of my Mother right now. I’ve never seen her like this.
He taps my foot with his and motions again. Reluctantly I follow him two tables away. We can both still see my mother and my aunt so I feel a little better. We order food but don’t talk right away.
“I think it will be ok.” He says to me.
“I’m sure it will, I’m just worried about her. I’ve never seen her this way. Her time in Azkaban changed her, not for the worse, but it’s a change I’m still trying to adapt to. Father is completely against this.” I motion to Mother’s table and then between the two of us.
“You’re parents know we’re together?” He asks, voice full of surprise.
“No. Just that I’ve become friends with you and Granger and Weasley.” He nods at this.
We eat but it’s our quietest meal. We keep stealing glances at the other table. They haven’t stopped talking. We’ve heard crying and laughing. I heard my mother laugh. I’m amazed. I pay for our lunches and then approach the table.
“Mother, I need to get back to work. Are you coming?” I ask quietly. I feel like I’ll break the spell they seem to have if I’m too loud.
“Actually dear, would you be ok if I stayed here a little longer?” They’re holding hands again. Still, maybe.
“No of course not.” I lean down and kiss her cheek. “I’m happy for you.” I whisper in her ear and she smiles at me. I turn to address my aunt. “It was nice to meet you Andromeda.” I extend my hand and she accepts. Potter comes up and kisses Andromeda on the top of the head.
“I’ll see you next weekend, Ok? “ He says to her.
“Yes and thank you Harry.” She pulls him into a hug. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
He turns to Mother and extends his hand again. “Thank you again Mrs. Malfoy, and it was nice to see you again. Take care.”
She returns the gesture but still seems surprised. It’s hard for me to walk out and leave her there but Potter grabs my arm and pulls me out.
He walks me back to my shop and we go in.
“I think that went well.” he says as he hops up on the counter.
“It did.”
“What are you doing tonight?” He asks as he plays with unicorn hair that is by the till.
“Nothing.” It’s what I do just about every night.
“Would you like to come over? Kretcher is a pretty good cook.”
“I still can’t believe you have a house elf.”
“Well I think of him as family. He gets gifts, he has a room. He has access to clothes that he refuses to touch. He seems happy and I treat him right. So, tonight?”
“Sure, what time?” I can feel a blush creep up into my cheeks as I think about the last time we were alone. I think about that a lot, mostly in the shower.
“6-ish?”
“I’ll be there.”
“Brilliant!” He hops off the counter and comes over to me. “I need to get back to work so I’ll see you tonight.” He leans in and kisses me. He does it so casually and every time he does it all of my nerve endings catch fire and the blood rushes to groin.
He walks out the door and I watch him go, looking forward to seeing him in a few short hours.
