The soft moans of the dead that floated on the wind did little to assuage the surprisingly soothing activity that was laundry. Perhaps, it was just because it was familiar activity. The sheer mundane nature of it or just the fact it was domestic.
Harry however couldn’t deny that somehow, in someway. Doing the laundry was helping.
One of the wizards accidentally blasted a hole through sheets. Harry didn’t know who started laughing at the clear hole through the sheet.
It started softly and it traveled infectiously until everyone one the rooftop were all snickering and Harry found that tears ran down his face.
It really shouldn’t have been that funny. Except that it was. It took a few long moments. Harry breathed heavily attempting his best to get to stop.
He waved his wand. “Reparo!” He said as the hole in the sheet. Vanished as the sheet made itself whole again.
“While, I’m am glad about your enthusiasm. Next time, try not to put so much power into the cleaning charm alright?” Harry grinned well meaning.
The wizard nodded his face flushed yet the embarrassed smile on his face made it clear he understood Harry wasn’t being serious.
It had started with just him and Hermione, yet one by one they all came up here. Carrying bedding, clothes and all manner of fabric.
And they started comparing notes on which spells got rid of which kind of stains the best. Scourgify
Worked well enough, But Tergeo steadfastly was the best for getting rid of liquid based stains. Harry had never done laundry with magic or really the old fashioned way like the older more experienced witches and wizards did.
The house elfs of Hogwarts had done all the work and with the Dursleys he had used a washing machine like any normal muggle.
Magic was a gift.
Spells made it so much easier as Hermione was using the hot air charm to make the fabrics dry. They all pitched in. Some immersed the dirty stuff into soapy water and another rinsed them.
The wind rustled through the sheer amount of linens and clothing from the forest of clothing lines that had sprung up.
Harry stepped back from watching this small community around him work. It shouldn’t be possible! The world was ending or perhaps it had already ended not with a bang but with a whisper.
For all they knew, they could be the last remaining humans, magic or otherwise to be upon this earth. How was it possible that something so mundane. Be so powerful?
They all helped one another as the laundry frenzy showed no signs of slowing. Harry realized they all had needed this. They all had.
Harry couldn’t help but step back take it all in and smile. As the everprescense of the horror that surrounded them just washed off them. Quieted by the communal lulling that was group based activity.
Of being part of a greater whole. Outside these walls… Yet, the realization of it just had no purchase, no strength.
The shock of this simple truth made Harry shudder. Wizards and Witches were amazing. Despite the technological and the martial prowess of their muggle kindred. They were alive and thriving.
Harry had no idea International Code of Wizarding Secrecy would even matter with this strange new world that remained.
They were alive.
It was a revelation, but Harry couldn’t help but be fascinated by.
They could succeed! Was that not something worth celebrating? The winds picked up and blasted a sheet right off from its clothing pins.
“I got it!”
Harry stated as he held out his wand and the sheet drifted over the side. Harry hurried over to the side and looked down.
He was being watched, but he didn’t see the massive horde outside. There were a few however. Harry sighed; they would have to clean the sheet. As the sun bright sky remained crisp and the clouds remained fluffy white.
Which was more than the white sheet fluttering haphazardly on the pavement and the parking lot.
Harry could easily summon it back with Accio. He pointed his wand at the nearest inferi swaying in the parking lot.
“Incendio!” It promptly burst into flames. Unnaturally fast the dead thing burned and toppled unmoving to the parking lot.
“Accio” As he turned his attention on the escaping formerly unstained sheet. The soiled sheet flailed against the wind but the summoning charm pulled it relentlessly and Harry grabbed hold of it.
He headed back and handed off the soiled sheet. It too was returned to the soapy water and Harry returned to the side of the roof.
He burned any of the inferi he could see in the immediate area. He watched as they toppled and consumed by the fire that consumed their dead flesh with an eerie eagerness. Like they were matchsticks.
They still had a problem. The door to outside was still open the loading bay was still open.
Harry wandered over to the section of roof the Loading Bay would be under. With a quick diffindo he marked the spot. He’d return later and perfom the same trick he did by opening another hole. As long as he could see the open door he could close it with the locking charm.
The concrete groaned from the sudden quick slices. He would be back later with Hermione.
Harry cast his emerald gaze back on this community. And walked back to it with a smile.
He helped scrub the soiled sheet, he helped dry it.
Later as after everyone had eaten their fill. He helped the one who had kept all the muggle supply of food frozen.
He basked in the warmth of the society. “Glacius!” He called forth a wintry gale that blasted into the heavily fortified freezer and his breath grew white from the sudden express chill. The sound of crackling ice made his abundantly clear that his freezing charm had iced over all the foodstuffs in the freezer.
He ended the spell and closed the door.
The food somehow tasted even better. Harry had to wonder… was this..
Was this how it was always supposed to be? Community? A part of something bigger than ones self?
The hamburgers were delicious, and he waited until everyone had eaten their fill before he stood up. He thought fondly for a moment as Harry thought about the words.
“Sonorus!” As Harry placed his wand at his throat much like Dumbledore had done. He walked until he was in front of everyone. He looked at everyone still remaining.
“Firstly, I want to congratulate each and everyone here. We did an amazing job and Laundry day will be a regular occurrence.” Harry was surprised to see the smile on people’s faces.
“Second, All of you are making great strides in Defense Against The Dark Arts. In A Few Weeks, I think everyone will be ready to explore the ground level. That said, No one will be forced to go down there against their wishes.”
There was some clapping and Harry couldn’t help but smile.
“And third, I will strongly caution everyone to go nowhere alone. In this I will be adamant, Also after this meal which was excellent” Harry clapped to make sure everyone thanked the cooks who looked delighted.
“Today showed me something incredibly special. As a community we can thrive! It was incredible to witness how smooth doing the Laundry is. We are capable of so much more. So as a community, It has come time to start talking to one another on how we are going to improve our community.”
Harry swallowed, “It is time to start thinking about gardening, scavenging and more. I think in the days ahead we will need to have a garden, I was thinking about one upon the roof.” There were whispers among the group that were welcome.
“That said, Lets clean up and prepare.” Harry frowned for a moment, it was time to inform them about the startling danger.
“ I would have everyone on high alert. By locking down all the doors and preventing any access to the top floor we have ensured safety. However, when I was locking everything with the locking spell. I felt a breeze.” Harry froze for a moment then he decided to be blunt.
“There is a door somewhere that leads to the outside. This is why the ground floor is currently offlimits. As long as that door remains open. The ground floor cannot be considered safe. The Loading Bay contains that door.”
He looked at Hermione and tilted his head for her to join him. We will return shortly.” Harry bowed to his audience even as he took his wand from his throat and canceled the charm.
Hermione looked at him proudly as they strode to the stairs that led to the roof. “That was well done Harry!” She beamed. He smiled. He shook off his nerves.
“The hard part is about to begin”. Hermione nodded as they locked the door behind themselves climbed the stairs and Harry brought her to the X he had carved into the roof.
“The plan is to open a hole, use the opening to aim at that opened door with the locking spell and close it”
Harry looked at her and beamed. “Remember how good your shield charm is?” He stated seriously. “One to shield and the other to work.” Hermione stretched and held her wand at the ready.
With the same process he had used for the garden shop.
“Defodio!” Harry pointed his wand at the spot he had marked.
As it crumbled and the spot fell in. As the hole grew wide they stepped back as the darkness obscured everything in darkness.
Hermione cast lumos to no effect. She frowned at the unnatural darkness. The sun was beginning to set.
“That’s not natural.” She mumbled worriedly. The tip of her wand extinguished.
“Lumos Solem!” As a beam of sunlight burst from her wand and plunged into that eerie darkness.
