Harry Potter was fucking tired.
He was tired of war, tired of making decisions, tired of losing people and tired of hiding.
He rubbed his eyes furiously and set down his quill. He was so lost. They'd had so many plans, so many failed missions, and it was all they could do to survive. What kind of life was this? He didn't feel as though they'd ever prevail.
There was a scratching at the window and he crossed to it to see one of the Order owls there. He approached and let the little grey owl in.
“Hi, Azshara.” He said softly, stroking her head. Merlin, he missed Hedwig. He hadn't bonded with another familiar since her and it still ate at him. So much needless death.
He pulled a small pouch from her leg and dumped it into his palm. He blinked.
A memory vial? Where had this come from? He searched the owl and the pouch but there was nothing else. He furrowed his brow, and swiftly exited the room.
They were constantly changing headquarters for safety, and this month was a suburban house deep in muggle London. They'd put up muggle repelling charms and were under a fidelius, with Ron as secret keeper.
Harry wasn't sure who all was currently in the house, but he was sure that the makeshift apothecary in the basement had a pensieve. He took the stairs two at a time and almost barreled into Neville Longbottom coming around the corner.
“Sorry, Neville, I didn't know anyone else was awake.” He apologized, stepping around his comrade.
“Don't get a lot of sleep these days.” Neville admitted, turning to stack a few jars on the shelf. He had gardens littered across London, trying to keep up with herb demand. It was never enough, but every little bit helped. “What's that?” He noticed the vial in his friend’s hand.
“Azshara brought me a memory vial.” Harry replied, pausing at the pensieve. “I don't know who sent it.”
Neville immediately pulled his wand, casting diagnostic charms. Harry paled at the fact that he hadn't done so earlier. His exhaustion was going to get him killed.
“Seems harmless… but there's something… I don't know, just gives me a bad feeling, mate.” Neville said. “We should wake the others.”
“I need to see what the memories are first, so I know who to alert.” Harry replied firmly. “If it's important, we’ll have to call a proper strategy meeting.” He had a bad feeling too.
“Then let me look with you.” Neville insisted.
“No, better for you to stay here.” His tired friend replied, putting a hand on his shoulder. “If there is some kind of dark magic at work and something happens to me, then you can alert the others.”
“If that's a concern then it should be me going in.” The boy had grown into quite the man after Hogwarts, and Harry felt a swell of pride at his Gryffindor friend.
“You're not any more expendable than me, Nev.” He said, dumping the contents of the vial into the pensieve. They both froze at the ghostly image of Hermione’s steely gaze on the surface of the water.
“Is that-” Neville began, but Harry had already disappeared inside.
