Harry stared at Peter thinking about his words about Michael and Rose. His niece had gone through a lot on her own and she had never approached him for help. As a Head Auror he could have helped her get some justice but the poor girl was fighting on her own. He understood how Michael must have felt. He too had been young when they had James. He was scared shit and wanted to run off because he was sure he would make a lousy father as he never had a father figure in his life. If it hadn’t been for Ginny’s love and encouragement he would have never made it till here. She had been patient with him, held his hand and helped him with his feelings of inadequacy whenever he thought he had failed his children. However Michael never wanted that kid. He was not interested in fatherhood, in fact he was not willing to settle down either. These kids were young too and they had made a mistake. Only sad thing was that Rose somehow ended up paying the price. He felt anger raise inside him as he wanted to scold Michael and Peter for not coming clean with Rose sooner so that she could have aided being pregnant. He looked down at the empty tea cup before Peter. He had mixed Veritaserum in it. He wanted to know the truth and the whole truth. No more lies, or games. He was waiting for Hermione and Draco to appear. He had the power to allow people related to the victim to be present while questioning. Peter had not expected this from Harry Potter. He was scared that Harry might get to know more than he was comfortable revealing to him. The room was lit brightly as Harry hated dark rooms meant to scare the criminals. Somehow he did not think that dingy smelling rooms which made them uncomfortable were effective enough. These people did dark acts in the dark so instead he put them in well-lit rooms where they could see everything and where Harry could observe every reaction on their faces and bodies. He got to know more this way than questioning them.
The door opened and Hermione walked in. She had requested Harry that he ask a few questions on her behalf as well. She was still hurting and Draco was beside her, consoling her the best he could. Ron was out of country and so he could not be called immediately. Michael was in another room waiting for Harry. They did not want both men in the same room. It was standard procedure. Hermione was angry that Michael had hid the truth from her even when she had gone to console him after Rose’s death. He had seemed so distraught that she could not stop herself and went to him telling him to be strong. They both had cried for Rose but Michael did not tell her the truth even then. She felt betrayed by it.
Peter looked up as he saw Hermione and Draco enter the room and take their seats behind Harry. Harry looked at Peter contemplatively before telling him that all conversations here would be filed away as memories in the ministry vault to ensure no changes can be claimed later. Both the captor and the criminal’s memories are checked for authenticity and only then filed away. Peter nodded his agreement.
Harry started by asking his name, job, details that were fundamentally making him ready to speak the truth. After about six questions he asked, “Did you kill Rose Weasley?” Peter looked terrified but answered, “No I did not kill her.” Letting go of his breath he had been holding unconsciously Harry asked, “Why was Rose going to marry Draco Malfoy?” Peter looked squeamish but was forced to answer, “Rose was pregnant with Michael’s son and he had refused to marry her. So to seek revenge she was going to marry Malfoy and give birth to Michael’s son. She was planning to raise the baby in front of his eyes and never let him know his father. She was very hurt when Michael refused to marry her and support her pregnancy. He wanted to be free to choose his own partner in his own time. I agreed with him. She was very angry with me as well. She cursed me and Michael saying that we would never find happiness.”
Hermione listened carefully before asking Peter, “Did you plan on killing Rose?”
Peter gasped before answering, “No, never, I liked Rose. She was very dear to Michael as well. I wanted her to have the baby so that Michael and I could raise him as our own. I also knew that she would never part with the kid. She knew that we might try to take the kid away from her and so she tricked Mr. Malfoy into marrying her. With a powerful husband by her side, no court would grant the custody to Michael especially since he is yet to gain his inheritance. She had thought of everything.” Hermione nodded accepting his answer.
Draco looked at him with narrow eyes and spoke up, “Do you really love Michael?” Peter looked with wide eyes at Draco and had a pained look on his face. He spoke in a tone just above whisper, “I….I really do love Michael. I was selfish…in fact I am selfish even now. I want him to be with me forever. If it hadn’t been for my political career I would have been open about my relationship a long time ago. I want him in my life.” Harry stared at Peter thinking if it was possible that this man was wanted the kid to make his family whole. Hermione looked thoughtful. Peter under Veritaserum could not lie and that meant his love for Michael was true. She wondered what Michael would say if he was asked the same question. Draco was concerned because he knew how attached Scorpius had become to Michael. He did not wish heartbreak for his son either.
The next hour was spent asking him about his whereabouts on the day Rose had died. He was nowhere near the venue and also told them that Rose had written a letter to him saying she was going to get her revenge. He could not decide if he should be telling Michael about her or not. In the end he decided to hide that information. Hermione was now assured that Peter did not kill Rose nor did he know who did.
Peter was asked to wait while Harry went in along with Hermione and Draco to speak with Michael. They entered the brightly lit room only to be surprised to find Minister Shacklebolt there. He was sitting opposite his son and Michael looked really nervous and sad. He looked like a kid who was about to get lectured by the headmaster. Hermione smiled as she remembered how many time Ron had that look on his face when they visited the Burrow. She wished he could be here with them but then he was away and she did not want to raise his hopes up only to be dashed if they could not find the killer. Michael looked relieved to see Harry come in. Draco looked at him bemused as he noticed that Michael did indeed fear his father.
Kingsley Shacklebolt shook their hands and thanked them for not making this public. “You were right to have come to me directly Harry. I do not want this to get out. Especially the relationship between Peter and Michael. The truth might get twisted into ugly gossips and I don’t want that. Peter has worked hard for our world and he deserve a chance to serve the people. I am disappointed that my son could not trust me enough to come to me with this before. I am to be blamed as well. I am not what you call an ideal parent. I just did not want to give any of the bigoted people a chance to bring our side down. I know it has been 20 years yet the dark side can come back any time. Sadly that has affected my relationship with my son. I hope you find the killer as soon as possible.” He turned to Hermione to hug her and told her that she would get all the help she needed. He smiled and shook hands with Draco before leaving the room. He did not say a word to Michael but simply looked at him with deep sad eyes and closed the door.
Harry looked at Michael with narrowed eyes and asked, “Did you speak with your father about the case?”
Michael looked down at the table and nodded, “He wanted to know everything and I told him about Peter and me. He also knows about Scorpius. He wanted to know if I knew about the baby. I am sorry but I could not lie. He is after all my father.”
Harry looked miffed, “Michael I specifically instructed you to not speak anything to anyone and yet you disobeyed the order.”
Michael looked thoughtful and then asked harry with eyes wide with horror, “You are not suggesting that father killed Rose are you?”
Harry shook his head in disbelief, “Of course not! This is the procedure here and it needs to be followed. What if someone was lurking behind this door? What of your father tells another person what you have told him? Remember we still do not know who the killer is. You should have followed the rules Michael.”
Michael looked at Harry apologetically and nodded, “I am sorry. I will not repeat this. It’s just that my father kind of overwhelms me.” Draco snorted, “I know the feeling.” Harry simply rolled his eyes and they began to ask him questions. Michael was not given the Veritaserum because he was not a suspect. He did not know about the baby and he lost Rose as well. He answered all questions smoothly only faltering when it came to Scorpius. Michael and Rose had slept together again the night he approached Rose for her forgiveness. That was their last time together. Rose was probably pregnant after that night because it was exactly two months after that night that she had spoken with Draco about her condition. Michael told them that Rose had come to him a month after she had conceived and she wanted him to marry her. He had refused and told her to get rid of the baby. Michael was openly crying by the time he narrated that portion of the story. He told them that Rose never told him about her plan to marry Draco Malfoy. Maybe she feared that he would interfere and try to stop her from taking that step. By evening they let both Michael and Peter go as they found their stories somewhat aligned. Michael was the father of Rose’s child and he spoke the truth saying he did not want the child. Harry knew because both Peter and Michael did not know that they had overheard their entire conversation in their flat being invisible. So he was sure that Michael was telling the truth. It was evening by the time they left the interrogation rooms and went to Harry’s office.
Hermione looked dejected and Draco was angry at the way both Peter and Michael had handled Rose. Harry was thinking about the series of events that took place and tried to make a timeline out of it mentally. He ordered tea and looked at Hermione who stared at her nails sighing from time to time. Draco and Harry exchanged worried looks.
“Hermione, are you okay?” Harry asked softly. Hermione looked at him and gave him a weak smile, “After all this work we are back to square one. We still don’t know who killed Rose. I was expecting it to be Peter because he loved Michael but he turned out to be innocent. This is so frustrating. I just want to know why anyone would kill my child just like that, without any reason.” Her eyes were filled with tears and she was barely able to control her anger. Harry was concerned about her state.
Draco immediately hugged her from side as he was sitting beside her. He spoke softly in a tome Harry had never heard him use, “Hermione, I know how disappointed you are right now. We all want to know who the killer is but I think the best thing to do is take a break and look at the evidence we have gained again in the morning. A fresh mind can sometimes see that we might have missed in excitement previously. I think we all should take a break. Come let me take you home. Some good food and a good night’s sleep might help us. What say Potter?”
Harry nodded vigorously, “Malfoy is right Hermione. Go home now. We will all meet at Malfoy’s home tomorrow at nine.”
Hermione looked at Harry before smiling lightly as Draco smirked. Harry looked at them puzzled asking, “What?”
Hermione spoke with a grin, “You said, ‘Malfoy is right.’” Draco laughed while Harry rolled his eyes and sent them out of his office.
