Chapter 13: In The
Dungeon
Severus pored over his
piles of notes, mounting frustration getting the better of him. He
refused to admit that there was no getting around Voldemort's
protections, he couldn't admit defeat. He tossed his quill across the
desk and leaned back in his chair, letting out a frustrated growl. It
was late Sunday night, it had nearly killed him seeing Hermione at
meals all weekend, desperately wanting to take great long strides
across the hall and scoop her up into his arms and kiss her with all
the passion she deserved. This uncharacteristic need had taken him by
surprise, like many things in recent weeks; it disturbed him and yet
he couldn't shake it and knew that a significant part of him didn't
want to be rid of these feelings and thoughts.
Their research session
had ended an hour earlier, it was a frustrating tangle of emotions
and commitment to complete the work, which had been periodically
interrupted with stolen kisses. They hadn't really talked about what
had happened but he sensed some hesitation on Hermione's part,
despite her eager kisses and flirtatious glances across the work
bench.
He couldn't deny his own
doubts and settled himself to believing that Hermione's were of a
similar nature, simple worry about consequences and not actual
regrets about what they had become. He fully intended to continue
their relationship, even in the face of the possibly disastrous
outcome. For now it was a closely guarded secret, and if there was
one thing he could do best it was keep secrets.
He decided to call it a
night, abandoning his research and heading for the shower before bed.
He'd found it difficult to sleep the previous night, memories of
making love to Hermione kept him from sleep, he suspected tonight
would be the same. He lay awake, staring at the canopy over his bed
picturing her lying beside him, which naturally moved on to imagining
her under him, on top of him and any which way his imagination could
stretch, regardless of whether or not his body could do likewise.
Eventually Severus drifted into a restless sleep, filled with the
most erotic images he had ever experienced in his life.
It was an ordinary
Monday, except for the fact that Hermione woke up in a sweat and
highly aroused from her hot and heavy dreams of Severus. He had
awoken something inside her that no one had even come close tapping
into before. A huge smile formed on her face at the thought of seeing
him at meals, stealing forbidden glances across the great hall,
teasing him with a seductive lick of her lips and watching him shift
uncomfortably, his scowl firmly fixed to his unorthodoxly handsome
face.
She was distracted in her
lessons, doodling on her parchment and letting her thoughts turn to
her experience on Saturday morning or drift into fantasies of
repeating the experience in all sorts of locations around the castle.
A wild and adventurous sexual appetite had arisen in her and she had
felt a distance growing between that and her concerns about his life
as a spy or his role as her teacher.
Tuesday arrived, Potions
would be a challenge, but that was something Hermione had never
failed to rise to. She filed into the classroom with everyone else
and took her seat, trying not to look directly at Severus, she
distracted herself with getting her things out of her bag. Severus
began the lesson and everything seemed normal, Hermione noticed that
he was avoiding eye contact with her, but she was doing likewise,
anxious to keep from saying or doing something incredibly stupid. She
concentrated hard, knowing that she could not allow herself to be
distracted when dealing with potentially explosive potions
ingredients.
Harry was working beside
her, his performance in Potions had steadily improved this year,
Hermione suspected that he no longer felt the same intimidation from
Severus, although she couldn't be sure why. The snide comments had
been less frequent on Severus' part, she supposed it was largely down
to his feelings for her. They hadn't ceased completely, however and
she smiled at the thought of Severus trying to maintain his cover in
front of the likes of Malfoy despite the radical change in his life.
Before she knew it, the
bell had rung signally the end of an uneventful lesson. She took her
potion up to the front, unsure of herself suddenly. Would she crack
under his gaze? She glanced up into Severus' face, painfully aware of
Harry just behind her, Severus was scowling, his eyes not fixed on
her but on Harry over her shoulder. She tilted her head to catch his
eye and gave him a reassuring smile.
'That wasn't so bad.' She
whispered, with what she hoped was a firm and confident expression on
her face. She knew Harry would hear, but felt sure he would interpret
it as referring to the lesson and the complex potion they had brewed.
Severus held her eyes for a lingering moment and inclined his head
ever so slightly before looking past her once more and letting forth
a quiet “tut” as Harry put his potion down on the desk.
'Well well.' Severus
snarled as he looked into the contents of the brew. 'Could be worse,
Potter.' Hermione suppressed a giggle as she made her way back to her
desk to collect her things. Harry was at her side a moment later,
scowling and huffing to himself.
'Harry, that was
practically a compliment. Take it gracefully.' She chided gently as
she slotted her things into her bag. Harry shrugged.
'I know, but any other
teacher would show some sign of recognition for an improvement over a
term like this. I shouldn't expect it from Snape, but I do. It's my
problem, I just have to deal with it.' He slung his bag over his
shoulder and stomped out, leaving Hermione chewing her lip.
'Miss Granger? You'll be
late for your next lesson.' Severus' silky voice drifted across the
now empty classroom in its most flirtatious tone, reserved only for
her. Hermione cracked a grin and turned to face her snarky professor.
'But Professor, it's the
end of the day.' She grinned more widely at him, fluttering her
eyelashes mischievously. Severus moved easily across the classroom,
his black robes fluttering slightly, giving the impression that he
was floating just above the floor. He came to a halt right next to
the young Gryffindor, far too close for a teacher to come to his
student. Hermione's heart rate increased as she looked into his deep,
obsidian eyes and with a tenderness she didn't expect, Severus lifted
a hand and brushed his long, white fingers along her jaw. Her eyes
fluttered closed and she nuzzled her face into his hand, allowing a
gentle sigh to escape her lips. She felt his other hand snake around
her waist and pull her body against his.
Suddenly annoyed that he
had managed to distract her so splendidly, Hermione pulled away from
him and swatted him on the arm. 'You need to lay off Harry!' Severus
pursed his lips tight across his teeth, Hermione thought he might
actually growl. 'He's improved so much this year and all you've got
for him is “Could be worse”? Not good enough.' She
scolded him. Severus crossed his arms over his chest and let out a
low snarl.
'You will not tell me how
to speak to my students.' He hissed, his face stony and pale.
Hermione backed off, she realised she had crossed a line. She opened
her mouth to apologise but before she could say a word he recoiled
from her as if stung, his blazing eyes fixed on the doorway behind
her. Hermione spun around to see Draco Malfoy standing there looking
somewhere between revolted and amused. Panic rose in her chest, she
felt her breath catch in her throat and was sure Malfoy could see her
heart pounding through her chest. 'That will be all, Miss Granger.'
His razor sharp voice cut through her, yanking her back to the cold
dungeon classroom. She simply nodded, grabbed her bag and scurried
from the room, brushing past Malfoy on the way. He spared her a
curious glance as she fled, trying to avoid his eyes, the door swung
shut after her and she ran for the entrance hall at full speed.
Draco Malfoy was eyeing
his Potions professor with distinct suspicion in his gleaming grey
eyes. Severus turned and swooped back to his desk, seating himself
behind it with authority. Malfoy walked lazily closer, his head
cocked to one side.
'What is it?' Snape
snapped as he stacked his papers on his desk and tidied the submitted
potion bottles from the class. Malfoy shifted his weight and wet his
lips before eventually speaking on seeing the dangerous glint in
Snape's eye.
'What did I just walk in
on?'
'None of your business,
Draco. What did you want?' He asked again, more gently this time.
Malfoy raised his eyebrows defiantly. Snape sighed and sat back in
his chair. 'Draco, why do you care?' Malfoy clucked his tongue and
looked away, his eyes skimming the room. Severus watched the boy
carefully, wary of how much he had seen or heard. He needed to regain
the eye contact, unfortunately, Malfoy was well aware of this. After
a painfully long moment of awkward silence, Malfoy shook his head and
his brow unfurrowed as he began asking rather inane questions about
the homework and how much work he should do to keep his mother happy.
Severus allowed himself
to relax slightly, out of the red zone for the time being, but still
troubled by what had happened, aware that he would have to keep a
close eye on his favourite student and anxious that young Malfoy
continued to avoid the spy's penetrating gaze until he left the
classroom after a thorough academic interrogation. Severus leaned
forward, pressing his white hands to the desk as he let out a long
breath. That had been close, much too close.
AN: Well, finally another
chapter. I can't tell you how relieved I am to have been able to
produce this little addition. This story went on hold while I read
HBP, and after I finished it, well, I had no idea what to do with any
of my fanfic! Finally I realised I needed to return to it and
inspiration has kindled a small but steady fire. Thank you to everyone who has reviewed and to those still with me after my absence!
The title of this chapter
is from the title of one of my favourite fics 'I Know What You Do In
The Dungeons' by Buttercup. (I hope you don't mind me paraphrasing,
chick, I love your stories, no harm was intended.)
Reviews are, as always,
desirable and will fuel that little fire I mentioned, so leave one
:-)
