Chapter Summary: Draco convinces Hermione to help him carry out his plan after he receives a disturbing letter. Pansy finds a couple of disturbing letters herself.
A/N: Sorry guys, but you knew the angst had to come or it wouldn’t be a true H/D fic. We get a little taste of it in this chapter, with more to come in the next one. Stick with me though, because I promise there will be a happy ending after we get through these rough spots.
Draco paced restlessly in the Prefects’ Study, waiting for Hermione to arrive. When he heard her footsteps outside the door he stuck his head out, waving at her to hurry.
“Come on, I haven’t got all day!” he snapped.
Hermione entered, a frown creasing her forehead, and watched as Draco shut and locked the door. “What’s the note about, Draco?” she asked, looking curiously at his reddened, overly-bright eyes.
“Here,” he said, brusquely, tapping a crumpled letter with his wand before thrusting the parchment at her. He resumed his agitated pacing.
Hermione smoothed the parchment out and read the contents.
Draco,
It has come to my attention that you may be intimately involved with a certain Gryffindor. Do not be alarmed, but I feel I should tell you I have informed your father, as I believed this news would be of particular interest to him.
He will be visiting the school at the end of the week, at which time he wishes to speak to you in private. I would like to speak to you before then. Please visit my office on Monday after dinner.
Professor Snape
Hermione looked up, horrified, and caught Draco swiping at his eyes roughly with the back of his hand. “Draco...what does this mean?” she asked, urgently.
“Isn’t that obvious, Granger?” he asked, angrily, pacing faster and faster. “My father is coming here to try talking me into betraying Harry to the Dark Lord. Merlin! I’m so fucking excited and proud to be able to aid the cause, I could just vomit!” he said, with bitter sarcasm.
“Draco, you don’t have to listen to him,” Hermione said, “our side would protect you from any backlash, you know.”
Draco stilled, staring at her angrily. “Of course I’m not going to bloody listen to him! Do you think I’d be able to lure Harry into the trap my father is clearly setting?”
Hermione shook her head. “Of course I don’t think you would, Draco, I was just trying to reassure you.”
Draco resumed his pacing. “Well don’t worry, your Golden Boy will be perfectly safe. I’m going to keep him as far away from me as I can, that way Father will never be able to use me to get to Harry.” Tears were standing in his eyes, threatening to fall.
“What are you going to do?” Hermione asked, worriedly.
“My idea from last night...the Will Strengthening potion,” he replied. “Even then, it’s going to be bloody difficult to resist the curse, but I think —.”
“Draco, wait,” Hermione interrupted, “I forgot to tell you. Last night I went back to the library and was researching the curse a bit more. Technically, the curse no longer has a hold over you two.”
“It doesn’t?”
“I found an archaic listing of loopholes in Dark curses. It appears that yielding to the dictates of a reciprocal Imperius-derived curse renders the curse in question ineffective.”
“In English, Hermione,” Draco grumbled. “Do you honestly think I can concentrate enough to pick the meaning out of that muck?”
Hermione rolled her eyes, then began to patiently explain. “It means when you and Harry agreed to give in to the curse instead of attempting to fight it, the curse was rendered ineffective and was broken.” She watched his pacing slow to a stop.
“We aren’t under the...” his voice trailed off in a puff of air. He tried again. “All those times we shagged, we were...”
“You were doing it because you both wanted to,” Hermione supplied, helpfully.
“Yes, except the time he almost raped me, that time it was the curse,” Draco threw out, offhand, waving off Hermione’s gasp of horror. “I can’t believe I didn’t know he wanted me all this time,” he whispered, shaking his bowed head.
Hermione stepped closer and put her hand on his shoulder. “He loves you, you know. He told me today,” she whispered.
Draco looked up, a tear escaping down his cheek. “Don’t say that,” he said, his voice rasping. “I don’t want to know.”
“Draco, —.”
“We’ll do the Will Strengthening potion anyway,” Draco said, icily, brushing her hand off his shoulder. “It will make things easier. I’ll go into Hogsmeade today and pick some up. Normally I would go ask Snape for some, but I think if I see him I’ll fucking kill him with my bare hands. Bring Harry to the Room of Requirement tonight after dinner. I was supposed to spend the day with him, but I can’t bear to now...you’ll just have to keep him busy, all right?” His voice ended on a slightly panicked, pleading note.
Hermione shook her head silently, tears filling her eyes. She couldn’t accept the fact that Harry was going to be hurt like this.
Draco took her by the shoulders and shook her slightly, tears falling freely down both their faces. “You have to do this, Hermione,” he begged, “do it for Harry. We’ll both take the potion and I’ll pretend I’m no longer under the curse, and that I don’t feel anything for him at all...that should keep him away from me. I will tell my father that Snape gave him false information about us...that I have never spoken a civil word to the Boy Who Lived. That way I can’t be forced to betray him.” He shook her again. “Say you’ll help me!”
Hermione finally nodded, choking back a sob.
“Thank you,” Draco said, in obvious relief. He released her and covered his tear-soaked face with his hands. He knew he wasn’t strong enough to carry his plan out alone. He loved Harry so much, and his plan would surely hurt the other boy. He would definitely need the Will Strengthening potion in order to be able to do what was necessary. He wiped his face and looked up at Hermione. “It means a lot to me that you’re going to help,” he said, softly.
She nodded again, drying her face, realizing that Draco needed her to be strong for him. “Come on,” she said, shakily, trying to pull herself together. “You’d better get to Hogsmeade before Harry looks for you.” She attempted a smile.
The two of them left the study quietly, shutting the door behind them. As they walked together towards the nearby staircase, Hermione reached a hand up and rubbed Draco’s back between his shoulder blades. He turned and gave her a sad smile, then waved goodbye as she went up the stairs and he turned the corner to head down to the Slytherin dormitories. Neither of them noticed that Pansy Parkinson was several yards behind them, on her way to the Slytherin common room in search of Draco, and had witnessed that last bit of tenderness.
Hermione found Harry and Ron chatting animatedly with Seamus, Dean and Neville in the Gryffindor common room. She forced a smile on her face, plopping down next to Ron on the couch.
“So, what have we got planned today?” she asked, struggling to keep the cheerfulness in her voice.
“Where’ve you been?” Ron asked, putting his arm around her. “We were waiting for you.”
“Had to take care of some things,” Hermione said, lightly, kissing Ron on the cheek.
“So are we heading out to Hogsmeade, then?” Seamus asked.
“I don’t think Harry’s going, mate,” Ron said, grinning when he saw Harry blush. “He’s made other plans. Haven’t you, Harry?”
“Actually,” Hermione said, “I don’t really feel like going to Hogsmeade today, either. I have loads of research to do.” She gave Ron a meaningful look, inclining her head towards Harry slightly in the hopes that he would catch on.
“Research? Oh, right, I forgot,” Ron said, finally twigging on. “That research we were doing in the library before we got chucked out, I remember now.” He turned to Seamus, Dean and Neville. “You lot go on, we have research to do.”
Seamus grinned mischievously, his blue eyes sparkling as he looked suggestively between Hermione and Ron. “Suuure, mate. Research. Understood.” The three boys left, snickering and making kissing sounds all the way to the portrait hole.
Ron and Harry waited till they left to turn to Hermione. “Did you find something?” Harry asked, anxiously. On one hand he’d be glad to know he wasn’t under the curse anymore, but on the other, he was afraid to find out that Draco might not share his feelings.
“It’s a potion,” Hermione said, hating herself as she tried to avoid Harry’s worried eyes. “Draco’s buying it in Hogsmeade right now...I saw him in the corridors downstairs, Harry, he told me to tell you he would see you after dinner tonight. You can both take the potion then. It should break the curse.”
“That’s great,” Ron said, thumping Harry on the back. “You two can start fresh, you know, without all the curse bollocks in the way.”
Harry smiled back, nervously. “Yeah, if he fancies me at all, that is.”
“What? Of course he does, mate! Hermione was right, you should have seen the way he looked at you last night in the library.”
Harry’s smile grew a little stronger, lighting up his eyes. Hermione didn’t trust herself to say a word.
Pansy sat silently in the almost deserted Slytherin common room, the blood pounding furiously in her veins. It couldn’t be possible. Draco would never touch that Mudblood, never! But then how to explain what she’d seen in the corridor? She tugged fretfully at her hair, not wanting to believe it was true.
She jumped up from the couch when Draco entered the common room from the dormitories in his over cloak. “Is everything all right?” he asked, frowning as he noticed her anguished expression.
“Oh, just fine, darling,” she said, her voice a little shaky. “I just lost my favorite bracelet, is all. It’s nothing, I’m sure it’ll turn up. Where are you off to?”
Draco noticed her clenched fists, and thought he saw a distinct look of malice in her eyes, but he dismissed the ridiculous notion. “I have to pick up some things in Hogsmeade,” he said, heading for the exit before she could ask to accompany him. “Good luck finding your bracelet.”
Pansy watched him leave, then determinedly strode towards the stairs and took them down to the boys’ dormitories. She eased open the door to the seventh year boys’ room, and found it empty. She headed for Draco’s trunk, and unlocked it with her wand, rummaging through it for some proof of his disgusting relationship with the Mudblood. She didn’t want to believe it was true, but if it was, she wanted to know.
Two tightly rolled pieces of parchment fell from the folds of one of Draco’s jumpers, catching Pansy’s eye as they tumbled to the floor. She snatched them up, unrolling them and reading them quickly, each word confirming the sick truth.
Have to leave...don’t want R to notice I’m missing...see you in Care of Magical Creatures after breakfast...Your cock has left me awfully tender and sore...Meet me in the library...and they were both signed, H.
Pansy saw red, the hatred inside her overflowing like a vat of boiling acid. She was going to make that Mudblood pay. All those love bites on Draco’s neck, the small smiles he kept directing across the hall...and she had probably looked like an utter fool, sitting there beside him like a panting fucking lap dog, waiting for him to glance her way.
Pansy took a deep, calming breath, releasing it through her mouth. She brought herself under control, quickly putting all Draco’s things back the way she’d found them, including the two letters. She walked calmly back to the common room and sat down, pulling out her homework and setting it out in front of her. She would take care of the Mudblood and Draco, and they wouldn’t know what had hit them. She began to plan her revenge.
