Harry stretched as he rose, as
thankful for the potion as he had been after implementing it the first time. He
had not found himself entwined with the blonde as he had when he drifted back
to the world of the living around seven-thirty last night, something that did not sit overly well with him. It would
not do to have his pet wake that way, and he was immensely glad when he had
realized the blond had not yet woken when they had been in such a position… for a handful of reasons, not all of which
Harry fully understood himself.
Said pet was not due to wake for at least
another hour or more, but he needed to begin taking care of business before the
blonde locks were there to tempt him once more. He had to meet several people, not
to mention the ever-increasing stack of papers waiting for him. He really did have to learn to take care of those
things while his pet was with him, lest he find himself unable to concentrate
when he truly needed to.
A snap of
his fingers had Milly popping in, and with a nod of
greeting, he asked that his breakfast be sent to his study instead of the
dinning room this morning.
“When he wakes, give him a plate here, and tell him he may
do as he likes until lunch as long as he stays within the manor and is prompt
to the meal.” He instructed, indicating his pet with a tilt of his head. “I
trust you will be sure he enters none of the restricted rooms?”
The elf nodded, and with a dismissive gesture from him she
was gone.
Some rooms
Harry had designated to the elves as such quite a while ago, so he knew Milly needed no clarification of where his pet was not to
go. The potions lab, for example, was one of those rooms he only trusted Milly to tend to, as the things there could very easily
turn deadly if mishandled or misplaced, even if said room was not used very
often. The ‘Dark Library’, where he kept all the Dark Arts books he had
accumulated when learning to ‘know thy enemy’ (and to learn spells capable of
defeating them) was also part of the list, as was his study, most of the
dungeons and several other rooms throughout the manor. The blonde could easily
entertain himself this morning without needing to venture into the few
dangerous rooms, and the last thing Harry needed was to worry if a wayward step
had caused his pet to fall into an obscure hole in the dungeon or that he was
beaten to pulp (or cursed into oblivion) by the battle manikins in his training
room… or any number of things that could happen in those rooms.
The
distinct smell of a warm breakfast greeted him as he opened his study door,
complete with a steaming cup of coffee that would do wonders for the remainder
of his day. He read over several documents as he ate, accepting some, denying
others and overall trying to figure out what the catch was in each instance. He
hated these things, but some parts of adulthood none could escape. Not even him. He looked up at the clock every so
often, even if Milly had already been asked to alert
him a good twenty minutes before the men were due to arrive. Still, he really did want to see what came of their work…
especially now that his pet was ready to receive it.
Eight and a
half documents later, Milly did alert him of the time, Giving Harry ample time to finish the ninth
one before making his way to the main Floo room. He arrived
just as one of his elves was welcoming the arrivals, taking great pleasure in
opening the large doors just as one of the men made to ask the creature to
alert his Master of their presence.
“Mr. Potter,” the senior member greeted, inclining his head
in a small gesture of respect.
“Welcome,
gentlemen, I trust you have brought the requested item?”
“Yes, yes of course, sir.” they assured him eagerly, “and might we add, you have impeccable taste.”
“Thank you… Wilfred, was it?”
“You remembered sir,” the youngest of the three men
confirmed in bewilderment, “I am honored, sir.”
“It is I who am
honored that three such busy men made time in their schedule to personally
deliver their work.” he countered pleasantly, “I had half-expected a runner.”
The last was a blatant lie, of course, as Harry would have
been quite insulted had he not met at least one of them today. Still, all three
was slightly more than he had
predicted.
“May I see
it?” he asked,
“Yes, of course Mr. Potter,” the third man, Mr. Kirden if Harry’s memory served, immediately rushed to
produce the flat, square box. “Here you are sir.”
Harry opened the dark wood carefully, His eyes widening as
he first laid eyes on the contents. Still, after the initial awe, he
scrutinized it carefully; first while in the box, then in his hands after the
box had been placed on a nearby table.
The diamonds were slightly larger
than he had anticipated, actually, though still not large enough to make the
thing seem overfilled. The edges were very nicely rounded, as not to catch any
stray hair or nip at the delicate skin, while the rows of diamonds making
stripes in the band gave it just the right amount of twinkle. The necklace was
beautiful, but-
“And the pendant?”
“Oh, right here, sir.” the man indicated, pointing to the
lid of the box where Harry had not noticed the second compartment.
“Ah. Thank you.” then, as an afterthought, “the measurements
are exact, I hope?”
“We verified it three times, sir.”
He acknowledged the answer with a nod.
The pendant
was equally beautiful, though Harry could expect little else from the most renowned
magical jewelers. Especially at the
price he had commissioned this at. His full-color crest seemed to be captured
in the over-large diamond, seemingly painted right into the large stone. The diamond was the circumference of his
favorite shotglass, the crest easily visible within.
“The clasp will hold?”
“As you requested sir, the necklace can only be opened by
your hand or one of your direct descendants no matter how hard one tries, and
both the pendant and necklace will not break, scratch or age.”
“Excellent.”
“Now,”
Harry continued, having handed over the overly-large purse, “
I have one more commission for you gentlemen, but as the body of the piece
is being commissioned from a long-time associate and friend, I have asked that
he explain the intricacies to you at his earliest convenience. I do apologize
for not enlisting your expertise on the entire project,” he soothed, noting how
they attempted to suppress the annoyance of having to share a commission and not being entrusted with the whole thing, “but
as extensive and highly-specialized woodwork is involved, I had to split this
up.” They did seem slightly appeased, at least. “Oh, and if I do not have a
chance to speak with him before he contacts you, would you confirm that I have
decided upon seventeen slots with thirty stones? I would much appreciate it.”
The way
their eyes lit up at the mention of thirty stones confirmed that they would
certainly pass his message on, and with a quick excuse he bid them on their
way, the small box tucked securely under his arm as he made his way back to his
study. He had just enough time to take care of a few more documents before lunch,
though he really should tell Milly to postpone the meal till two again, as the pile was not going to shrink itself.
