A part of Miranda
wanted to flatly refuse, fight, run-away or do whatever she could to avoid
going to Lucius Malfoy’s, but somehow she sensed on a deeper level that her
Professor was as enraged and disgusted as she was about the whole affair. She
would not risk having Voldemort take her away from the one person who seemed to
be trying to help her in a veiled and offhanded way, so instead she merely held
her head up and calmly allowed Severus Snape to side-along apparate her.
They appeared near a
huge and resplendent manor as old, forbidding and elegant as the surrounding
English countryside. Had she not been so afraid she would have been impressed
by the huge mansion and its land. She could see other buildings behind the
house, but merely kept her eyes straight ahead and stayed silent and strong
almost unconsciously imitating her Professor.
Severus and she
strode up to the front door and he knocked with the elegant brass knocker on
the Malfoy’s door. Almost immediately it was opened by the arrogant and darkly
handsome Lucius Malfoy. “Well, well.” Lucius drawled his eyes narrowing on
Miranda. “Now that company has arrived, the hunt can begin soon.”
She refused to allow
her body to shiver the violent tremor it felt within.
“Are you riding in
the hunt with us Severus?” Malfoy arrogantly looked at Snape.
“No.” Snape tersely
spoke. “I don’t ride horses.” His voice slipped into that icy and silky timber.
“No, I suppose you
don’t.” Lucius said with a dark smirk of his own, “You weren’t exactly raised
to appreciate the finer civilized and refined sports in life were you, Snape?”
“Watch yourself
Malfoy.” Severus’ hissed and eyes narrowed dangerously.
Deciding not to get
into it with Snape; Malfoy made a quick gesture to the back of his manor, “Take
her out back to the stables, I shall be out shortly. She hasn’t earned the
right to enter Malfoy manor yet.” His eyes burned at Miranda with cruel
sarcasm.
“Remember whose mark she bears, Lucius.”
Severus casually threw the remark out at him. “I suggest you do not lose
control of yourself.” And then before Malfoy could utter another peep, Severus
took her arm and steered her towards the back of the manor towards the stable.
“Remember what I
told you.” Snape hissed in a low tone under his breath. “Build a wall. Do not
fight him, but do not allow yourself to be utterly dominated by him either. He
will sense any fear and hatred towards him you harbor and use it to his
advantage.”
And then her teacher
merely fell silent as they reached the elegant stables, not wanting to speak to
her anymore. Miranda glanced around the huge stable, and paddocks area. They
had walked inside and she could already see some of the finest Thoroughbreds
and Andalusian Horses around. A great black Friesian stallion nickered softly,
he tossed his head and Miranda had to keep from gasping at the sight of the
magnificent animal. She knew he must have cost a small fortune.
The stable alone was
more elegant bigger and better built than Professor Snape’s entire dreary
house. There were immaculate brick aisles, large paneled and elegant tack
rooms, and here and there were many trophies and cups won for Steeplechase
racing and dressage competitions. They all held the Malfoy family crest on
them.
Several of the
horses began to get antsy now and began to paw their stalls or whinny and as
Miranda turned she saw Lucius Malfoy striding up to the stables, but it was
what he held in his hand that caused her heart to slam into her chest. It was
that damnable bridle.
“Bet neither of you
have ever seen anything so nice?” Lucius sneered condescendingly at both of
them. “Why I do believe this stable is bigger than your place Severus?”
“Well than it’s a
good thing the Dark Lord cares less about a person’s wealth and cares more
about their competency of service and magical ability.” Snape easily shot the
insult back.
Flashing grey eyes
met icy onyx ones. Two hard faces carved out of granite refusing to bend.
Miranda’s opinion of Severus Snape shot up a hundred fold at that encounter of
wills.
“I shall be back at
5 pm sharp to pick her back up.” Snape said.
“I may not be back
from the hunt at 5pm.” Lucius said viciously as he opened a door to an empty
stall. “Get inside girl!” Lucius Malfoy motioned to her.
“I will be back at 5 pm sharp.” Snape
reiterated again in an even more flat and deadly voice. “And she will be ready to leave.”
Miranda moved
quietly to the large elegant stall, it was filled with sweet straw and a bucket
of water and fresh hay. Inside her heart was breaking in a million pieces but
she dare not show a thing, she could feel Lucius’ eyes upon her, like arrows
searching for a chink in her armor to drive into her with.
Lucius turned his full attention to the girl
now. “It’s as simple as this.” He stated calmly, “Either transform on your own
and accept the bridle or I shall force you to transform, imperio you and force
the bridle on you, and then give you the cruciatus curse for wasting my time.”
For the briefest of
instances she and Snape’s eyes met. Miranda could see a deadly anger at Malfoy
in them and then a quiet resolve. Only she caught the slightest nod of his
head, and the unspoken promise.
“I change.” She
said in her broken English. She turned her back on Malfoy and began undressing.
“Ah, I see you can
teach something Snape.” Malfoy glanced at the potions master. “I see your
little pet is learning English. Pitiful and laughable, but she is learning it none
the less.”
Severus said
nothing, only a slight narrowing of his eyes. He was about to turn and leave,
not wanting to see any more of what was about to be or the cruelty inflicted on
Miranda but that was when Lucius said almost casually. “Yes, you had better leave now Severus.
After all, things could get a bit dark, a bit harsh.”
Snape froze on the
spot and turned fully back to Lucius Malfoy, “Darkness is something I know far
more intimately than you Lucius.” He said in such a low elegant and icy tone
that it was almost reminiscent of Lord Voldemort himself. “I do not fear what
is required to be done, and know this Lucius Malfoy. I have done such dark
things for our Master you can not even begin to imagine.”
While Severus’
voice never rose at all, Miranda felt such an icy murderous and chill run
through her it that she was certain Snape had channeled Lord Voldemort himself.
Even though she was turned from Malfoy she could sense the discomfort from him
as well. Never had she thought Severus Snape could be as intimidating as he was
at that moment. It only drove home to her how ‘kind’ her teacher had been with
her.
It was Severus
Snape’s anger at Voldemort, at Lucius Malfoy at Dumbledore and everything else
that he had allowed to aim his dark rage like a bullet at Malfoy’s very heart
and soul. He would not turn away now, to do so would be to disrespect his
student whom he had tried to impart the importance of occlumency. No, he was
going to force himself to see exactly what this bridle he had heard about did.
He knew by staying for an additional 5 minutes he would indeed get one up on
Malfoy.
Malfoy just
uncomfortably broke his gaze from Severus Snape and spun around towards
Miranda. “Change already, will you!” he hissed, “I don’t have all day!”
It was so hard at
first, so much had happened to her in the last week that she did not think she
had the concentration in her to allow her mind to coalesce the magic required
for the transformation from her human form to her equine form. But she imagined
once again the warm wind of the beach around her, her hooves racing through the
surf and she felt her body begin the change. Within a few moments it was done,
and now standing in the stall was the proud and elegant pure white Arabian
mare. Her ears swiveled towards Severus Snape a moment and it was only the
sharp hearing of her animal senses that picked up the faint deep intake of
breath from Snape.
“Take the bridle
willingly.” Malfoy instructed, but he was not as arrogant as he was a moment
ago.
Her brown eyes
stared straight ahead at her Professor as though finding strength in him
standing there. She indeed allowed Malfoy to slip the hideous contraption onto
her head. The sharpened bit biting into the bars of her mouth, and then his
nimble fingers expertly adjusting the straps of the bridle.
“Draco is coming
along for the hunt.” Malfoy spoke casually at Snape. “He will be here
momentarily.”
“I will be back at
5.” Severus said and then turned and stalked out of the stables to apparate out
of view.
“Let’s go.” Lucius
led her out of the stall and secured her between two sets of crossties in the
middle of the stable. Snape must have rattled him, because he was not as harsh
as he had been the first time he had done this with her. He then grabbed the
sides of her bridle and bought his face nose to nose with hers, her nostrils
could smell his hot breath against her muzzle, “Heed me well girl.” Malfoy
spoke in his usual snide tone, “My son Draco will be riding in the hunt with
us, if you make any aggressive move
towards him you shall rue the day. Trust me implicitly on this.” He released
her bridle and then strode back to the house.
Miranda stood
patiently between the crossties as she gingerly worked her tongue and mouth
trying to find a way she could shift that sharpened bit off the bars of her
mouth. Already she could taste the salty metallic taste of blood in her mouth;
she prayed Lucius would be light handed with her today. As she stood there mulling things over in her
mind it occurred to her then just how clearly she understood English. Normally
she had a difficult time at best, and when transformed it was near impossible,
but today for some reason her mind was as crystal clear as a cobalt blue sky on
a fall day. Since Miranda had woken up so
early, and she had nearly balanced that blasted bit on her teeth she was
actually able to close her eyes and nearly rest when she heard Lucius Malfoy’s
voice and the footsteps of two people coming up the rocky path into the
stables.
“Go take prepare
your horse Caesar, Draco.” Lucius instructed.
Miranda of course
recognized Lucius right away, he was now dressed in riding clothes but she was
grateful to see he was wearing just normal spurs today and not those horrid,
magically sharpened ones. But coming in with him was a young man who looked
close to her age. He looked surprisingly like his father with the same pointed
face and blue-grey eyes. His hair was shorter but was the same pale blonde. He
too was dressed in dark riding clothing.
“Did you get a new
horse Father?” the young man stopped in front of Miranda.
“An Arabian is it? Let me ride this one father, I always
like to try out the new horses.”
“No!” Lucius’ harsh
tone must have surprised his son. “Stay away from that one Draco, it is untrained
and vicious.” Lucius’ grey eyes glared at Miranda for a moment. “She is not
safe for you, needs an experienced rider. Prepare your hunter Caesar, do not
argue with me!” Lucius Malfoy glared and then disappeared into the tack room.
Draco walked up to
her a moment, one of his hands came up and rested briefly on her forehead and
than ran down the length of her elegant muzzle. “I don’t think you are all that
vicious.” He said softly under his breath.
Gently she nickered
softly and her nostrils sniffed at his sleeve. Her large brown eye blinked at
him. It seemed like ages she had seen someone close to her age. The slightest
half grin spread briefly on Draco Malfoy’s face, but it did not look harsh like
his father, instead it was more curious wonderment, a teenager’s unbridled
curiosity. “Nah, you don’t look that mean at all.” One of his smooth hands had
unconsciously slid up by her chin and he seemed to know exactly where to rub on
a horse to bring comfort. “Someday I will get father let me take you for a
spin.” It was not said arrogantly or cruelly, but almost as a gentle invite.
“Draco!!!” Lucius’
voice bellowed as he came out of the tack room easily carrying an elegant and
expensive English huntseat saddle. “Get away from that damn horse and prepare
Caesar!”
“Yes father.” The
young man said respectfully, but Miranda could sense the slightest slump in his
shoulders as he did so. She began to
think that being the prized heir of Lucius Malfoy was no picnic; and it gave
her a sudden empathy for Draco Malfoy.
She couldn’t see
Draco anymore as he had moved further down the aisle to saddle up his own
horse. Lucius had come over to her and began to saddle her up. Never had she
had a saddle on her, a leather girth came up right under her ribs and behind
her forelegs and was tightened roughly. She tried to unconsciously tighten up
and hold her breath but Lucius kneed her harshly under her chest then waited
until she exhaled and then tightened it even further. Even though Miranda’s animagus form was a horse,
she had never ridden one herself, nor did she have any experience as a rider.
However she was certain that the saddle was supposed to have a pad under it
between her back and the saddle. All the horses she had ever seen certainly had
some kind of pad or blanket under the saddle, but Lucius had chosen not to put
one on her. She had a feeling it was just one of his various cruel games with
her, to cause her discomfort without permanent damage. He led her out and Draco
led out an elegant leggy chestnut thoroughbred. Both father and son mounted up
and began to adjust their stirrups and other straps.
“Think you will get
the fox first today son?” Lucius asked his son in a lazy drawl.
“I will certainly
try.” Draco added. Miranda noticed that Draco’s eyes seemed to notice right off
that his father had put no pad on her back under the saddle. Draco’s horse had
a nice fleece pad under his saddle. But Draco dared not question his father or
say anything.
“We’ll head to the
Southern forest and hunt there.” Lucius said and then he squeezed his strong
thighs against Miranda’s sides and lightly touched his spurs to her flanks.
Snape’s words echoed in her mind and she was determined not to do anything to
garner Lucius’ wrath so she simply obeyed him implicitly. They had cantered and trotted nearly two
miles, and it was becoming clear to Miranda now why a pad was so important to a
horse’s back. It was like someone wearing stiff, leather hiking boots with no
socks. The saddle with Lucius weight was bearing down very uncomfortably into
her upper back and rubbing it raw. Anytime they took a low jump or galloped
hard over a ravine that saddle dug in her harshly.
Thankfully he was
not sawing on that bridle nor spurring her nor beating her with that crop. In
fact he seemed to be riding at his best form, showing what an elegant and
talented horseman he was, except for the sharpened bit of the bridle and that
relentless rubbing of the stiff saddle on her hide giving her subtle
punishment.
Both Draco and
Lucius had used their wands to flush out and track game until they finally got
onto a fox and then the hunt truly began in earnest. The pace was picked up and
they both galloped harder and deeper into the dark forest, leaping over trees
and dangerous crevices.
With an almost
devious look Draco suddenly spun his elegant chestnut thoroughbred down a side
trail, his wand out and at the ready as he rode as calmly and elegantly as his
father.
“Damn!” Lucius
hauled roughly on the bridle which bit into Miranda’s mouth relentlessly. “Turn
and follow them!” he barked at her, “We had better get that kill, understand
girl!” he growled at her as he drove his heels into her flanks.
Occasionally she
felt Lucius’ crop on her flank as she ran harder to catch up to the hard
galloping hooves of Caesar, Draco’s horse. “Move! Move!” Lucius pushed her
harder. It would have been a lot easier for her had that damn saddle not been
rubbing her raw!
She saw a barely
noticeable side trail and her mind soared. She dipped down it and skidded
nearly down a sharp ravine her hindquarters nearly sitting down in the dirt as
she boldly took the shortcut.
“What the bloody
hell!” Lucius Malfoy seemed livid a moment, hauling harshly on the bridle and
throwing his weight so far to the back she thought they would go down. She
ignored him and pressed on, as they hit the bottom she numbed her mind to the
bit and began to race for all she was worth dodging between thick trees and low
limbs. Had Lucius Malfoy not been such an excellent rider he would have already
been left in the dust, but it was then he began to see what she was doing,
where she was going.
“Oh brilliant indeed!” he gloated a moment and then allowed
her to have her head and left her alone to navigate in the forest, instead just
using skill and magic to stay clear of the branches that dangerously whizzed by
him.
She hit the other
side of the hill at a full bore run her hind end driving powerful muscles and
ignoring the discomfort of her aching back as she shot up and jumped nearly 5
feet straight up onto the main trail a good 200 feet ahead of the galloping
Caesar and Draco.
Miranda could hear
Draco’s shocked gasp of surprise! Had that Arabian mare just navigated the
dangerous and deadly ravine below and cut him off! He seemed almost incredulous
as they swung back out of the thick of the forest and back towards the moors.
“Avada kedavra”
Lucius muttered from atop her and Miranda suddenly saw a green jet erupt from
her rider’s wand at a small brown dog-like shape that dropped like a lead weight
nearly 50 yards to the right of them.
Father and son
skidded around and pulled up to the now dead fox. “Good kill, father.” Draco
said respectfully, but his eyes were still glancing at the small impressive
white Arabian mare. Lucius and Draco dismounted
and Lucius walked up to the fox and after cutting off the tail stuffed the rest
of the dead beast into Draco’s saddle bags.
“Here, you can have this tail son.” Lucius said almost in a patronizing
tone.
“No.” Draco’s pale
eyes dared to face his father head on. “You earned the kill, it’s yours.”
There were two
small cracks then, and immediately Miranda’s head swung to the sound. She knew
that noise, someone had just apparated somewhere nearby.
“Hey Malfoy.” A voice growled from the edge of the forest,
“We need to talk business.”
Lucius’ gaze
hardened a second. “I thought we said 3pm Mulciber!” he hissed. “Who else is
with you?”
“We need to talk.”
Mulicber’s voice sounded on edge, “the Master has urgent information for me to
pass onto you. Now.”
“Fine, fine.”
Lucius Malfoy grunted in a huff. “Draco tend to the horses, and do NOT take the
bridle off of the Arab mare, do I make myself clear?”
“Yes father.” Draco
gently took Miranda’s reins and his own horse’s reins.
“I will be back shortly,
do not go far, and stay where I can see you.” Lucius glared at his son a moment
and then strode off to the edge of the woods.
