"Master Draco was telling no lie when he explained to me about your hair! I thought for sure he was fibbing...but it's true!"
Hermione's head bowed in embarrassment.
"I mean just look at its thickness...it's perfect!" Hermione gasped in surprise and turned in her chair to look back at the woman who stood behind her.
"Perfect?"
"Yes!" said the woman excitedly. "It's perfect! I mean, just think of the possibilities!" She said as she began to pace back and forth in Hermione's bedroom. "Oh wow! And your color! Have you ever dyed it before?" She asked as she once again stopped behind Hermione and lifted a strand of her hair close to her face to inspect it.
"No - no I haven't..."
The stylist witch shrieked loudly and clapped her hands together in joy. "BRILLIANT!" She yelled, sending Hermione a couple feet in the air. "Oh my. We must get started then. The party's at 7 which means I've only got 4 more hours. Oh MERLIN I should have come sooner! There are so many things I want to try..."
Hermione let out a puff of air and tried to get comfortable in the hard wooden chair she sat in. At least she was able to look out her window at the garden.
The party was tonight and Hermione felt much less frightened than she would have previously thought. The whole incident with Draco...with Malfoy...in the living room a couple of nights ago sent her mind into a frenzy of confusion that she just hasn't been able to pull back from.
What did he want from her? More importantly, what did she want from him?
Not to mention she had to think of a new name for her baby now that she isn't a he. This whole "pureblood party" that was taking place tonight was the least of her worries.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Master Draco, all of your guests have arrived and I've showed them all to their rooms."
Draco lifted his head from his book and nodded to Arthur. "Thank you. And everything is prepared?"
"Yes, everything is in its place."
"You've done well, Arthur," Draco said with a smile. Arthur turned to leave when Draco's voice stopped him. "And what of Granger? Is Grenda with her now?"
"Yes Master Draco. She's been with her for over 3 hours now."
Draco cringed. "See that she doesn't get carried away, will you?"
"I will," Arthur said as he cracked a knowing smile. Draco watched as Arthur left with a frown on his face.
Arthur had been with his family for years, and yet he always seemed to have some sort of barrier around him, and no matter what Draco did, he just couldn't get around it. That night long ago when he'd walked in on Arthur and Granger's...less than comfortable conversation, he couldn't help but feel a bit jealous. The way that Arthur spoke to Granger, as if she was an old friend, it was a bit unnerving to say the least. In all Draco's years of knowing him, he'd never opened up to anyone in that way.
But Draco had more pressing matters to attend to at the moment. Like what he was going to wear tonight...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hermione grunted as she pulled herself up from the toilet for the 4th time in the last 2 hours (much to the displeasure of the stylist from hell). More than anything she wanted to lie down on her bed and take a nice long nap before the party, but that would be out of the question after the hours of torture she'd had to endure with her hair. Hermione seriously doubted anything would happen to it if she did though. The amount of products and spells that woman put on her head had to have made her hair tougher to break than Malfoy's ego.
Which was a ridiculous amount.
Not that she knew though, since she was forbidden to touch it and all of the mirrors in her room were charmed to reflect a picture of Grenda sticking her tongue out and waving her finger in disapproval. She had said she wanted Hermione to see the "finished product in all it's glory, and not the steps it took to reach it".
Hermione exited the bathroom and walked into her room to see Grenda talking comfortably with Arthur, who stood handsomely in a deep grey suit and bow tie. Hermione softly cleared her throat as she stopped beside them, and a smile cracked over Arthur's face as he looked down at her.
"You look ravishing Miss. Hermione," he said with a deep bow. Hermione smiled and Grenda clicked her tongue in annoyance.
"She's not even finished yet! Although, If we didn't have to stop every 5 minutes she would be..." She said as she crossed her arms over her chest and childishly stomped her foot.
Hermione sighed and turned to Arthur once more. "I haven't seen you for months! Where have you been?" She lowered her eyes. "I hope that I didn't get you into trouble that night with Malfoy. I'll go and talk to him right now if you want-"
"No, Miss. Hermione, that won't be necessary. Lord Malfoy has nothing to do with it. I've just been very busy is all. I've been meaning to come and see you, but I had my hands full with organizing the party."
Hermione nodded in understanding. "Well, will you at least save me a dance tonight?"
"Of course, Miss. Hermione," he said as he bowed once more. "But I must be off now. I have much more to do," he said as he exited the room, leaving Hermione once again in the iron claws of Glenda.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco's mouth fell open as he he stood at the base of the staircase to see his best mate, Blaise, walking down with that...creature on his arm. Once they reached the bottom, Draco quickly composed himself and nodded his head to Blaise, who nodded back with a grim smile. Draco then turned his gaze to the other person, and his mouth turned downwards into a frown.
"Why do you look so shocked to see me, Draco dear? Did you think that I'd just fall off the face of the earth after you dumped me?"
"No, Parkinson. I just didn't think that I'd have the-" gulp "-pleasure of once again having you in my company."
Pansy's deep shrilling laugh filled the hall as she waved her hand about. "I'd never deny you of such a thing," she said as she turned to an uncomfortable looking Blaise. "I've forgotten something in our room, dear. I'll just run up and get it. Wait for me here?" she said as her face crunched up in a smile and she raised a hand to Blaise's mouth.
"Yes. I'll wait here," he said as he placed a reluctant kiss upon it. Draco watched as she lifted the corner of her dress with pudgy fingers and he waited until she was out of sight before he turned to Blaise with a scowl.
"What in the hell is she doing here? She's going to blow the whole thing!" He whispered forcefully. Blaise lifted a hand to calm Draco.
"Listen!" he said quickly. "It's not like I want to be with her! But the second my father heard that she was available he forced me to-" his complexion greened, "-join with her. All of the other pureblooded witches with blood lines like her's have already been taken. And I figured, you know, that you wouldn't really mind or anything now that you have Granger."
"I don't 'have' Granger, you idiot," snapped Draco as he began to pace in front of Blaise. "What do you thinks going to happen when Granger is announced, hm? Pansy's going to throw a fit, that's what!"
"Draco! Calm down, I've already told her everything!" Draco came to a halt and he slowly turned his gaze back to Blaise, who took a step back due to the intensity of Draco's icy stare.
"You told her...everything?" Draco asked slowly as he took a step closer his cowering friend.
"Y-yes. I told her everything..." Draco reached into his robes and grabbed his wand and Blaise lifted his hands to his face for protection. "But she doesn't care! Honestly! And I made her swear not to tell anyone!!"
"Oh Blaisey-poo! I'm ba-ack!" Sang Pansy from the top of the stairs. Draco quickly pocketed his wand and leaned in close Blaise's ear.
"You'd better keep a tight leash on that bitch. If anything goes wrong, you'll be the one who pays," he whispered angrily.
Pansy stopped in front of them and giggled. "I'm back, so you two have to stop talking about me," she said playfully as she swatted both of their chests. Blaise let out a sharp laugh and Draco rolled his eyes as he left the room.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Thank you all for being here to celebrate the upcoming birth of my heir," said Draco to the room full of guests in front of him, who clapped politely to their host. "Many of you I've known all of my life, and you have been faithful to the Malfoy family for generations. Others I have had the great opportunity to gain as recent companions, which I know will last for many years to come. My father," Draco gulped, "Would have been honored by your presence," he said as he looked over the many faces in the crowd. "I would like to take this opportunity to announce the mother of my heir, Ms. Hermione Jane Granger, from the ancient bloodline of the Cardea family who hail from Greece."
Confusion flashed over his guests faces as the tried to remember the family name Draco spoke of, but their thoughts were quickly washed away as they turned toward the staircase to see one of the most beautiful sights many had ever beheld.
Hermione was standing with one arm through Arthur's and the other under her pregnant stomach as she turned her head to look out over the crowd of people below her. She was wearing a white dress that hung low over her shoulders and revealed the plump cleavage of her breasts. The fabric was made out of a thin material that flowed and hugged over every curve of her body. Her hair was done up into a beautiful array of curls, several of which were left to hang down over her face and neck. There was a thin strand of white material that was wrapped around her head, and it held a small blue jewel that hung in the center of her forehead.
She left none to wonder if she truly was an heir from a powerful Greek wizarding family. Not when she stood their looking like a Greek goddess herself.
Hermione's eyes flashed up to Draco's as she began to descend the staircase, and she found that she could not look away. His gaze as he stared at her was simply breathtaking. He looked as if he had never seen such a thing in his life...
His eyes were unblinking as they held her own. His mouth was slightly parted and his hands were lying limply by his sides and he made no move toward her as Arthur helped her to the stage and took several steps back so that it was only her and Draco left in a sort of quiet trance as they stared at each other.
It took Draco several moments to come back to reality and he quickly turned back to his guests who sat quietly for him to continue. Draco cleared his throat and took Hermione's hand in him own.
"Ms. Hermione Jane Granger," he said as a loud applause sounded through out the hall. Draco watched as his guests nodded in approval, and whispered their thoughts to the person beside them. He even saw Snape in the back of the hall clapping softly as he stared intently at Granger. The only person not joining in with the applause, Draco noticed, was Pansy, who sat grim faced at a table with Blaise by her side. She downed an entire glass of champaign before thrusting the empty cup toward Blaise, who quickly stood and left to refill it.
Draco's eyes flashed back to Hermione who stood with a slight blush spread over her cheeks. She was enchanting...
"Please fill your stomachs with food and champaign as you enjoy our musical entertainment for the night, Henry and The Witches Seven," he said, as the music started and the people began to dance.
Hermione's eyes went up to Draco's and she grinned. "Nice pick Draco," Hermione said as she stared down at her dress. "I was so afraid that you were going to forget I was pregnant and you'd send me some sort of skin tight contraption you'd give any other girl," said Hermione as she looked up from her dress and into Draco's wide eyes. "What?" she asked.
"You...you called me Draco," he said softly. Hermione froze.
"No I didn't! When did I...I did not!"
"You did, Granger. You called me Draco."
Hermione snorted. "You're hearing things," she said as she turned on her heal and walked off the stage. Draco turned to Arthur who nodded and followed behind her.
Hermione was stomping off toward the Champaign, before she realized with a sigh, that she wasn't allowed any, which then lead her to turn and run into the chest of Arthur, who she found had been following her all along.
"GAH! Just what in the bloody hell do you think you're doing!?" she snapped at him. Arthur raised an eyebrow and Hermione sighed. "I'm sorry. It's been a long day and I haven't had my nap yet...does 'I'm pregnant' count as a plausible excuse?" she asked softly as she stared up at him from under her eyelashes.
Arthur smiled. "Yes, it counts."
"Oh good," Hermione smiled back.
Arthur bent down low so that he was whispering in her ear. "You know, Lord Draco did say that you could leave after you were announced. Why don't you get out of here while you still can?"
"Miss. Granger I've been looking all over for you!" yelled an elderly man who was walking over to where Hermione stood.
"Go the the gardens. I'll meet you there when the coast is clear and I'll escort you to your room," Arthur quickly whispered as the old man came to a stop in front of them and took Hermione's hands into his own.
"My dear, you are a vision!" He said as he placed a kiss on top of each hand.
Hermione smiled. "Thank you, Sir."
The old man waved his hand, "No, no. Call me Uncle Barty. I'm Draco's Great Uncle from his mother's side. And oh have I got stories to tell you! Did you know that when Draco was a tot, he'd run around the manner naked? It took us hours to find him in this place! His mother had to charm the clothes on him so that he wouldn't take them off-"
"Lord Barty, I'm sorry to interrupt, but it seems as if your cloak is about to come untied..." Arthur said as his eyes flashed to Hermione. As Uncle Barty's gaze turned down to his cloak Arthur mouthed the word "Run" to Hermione, who quickly got the hint and took off as fast as her swollen ankles would take her toward the large double doors that exited out to the gardens.
Draco watched from the other side of the room as Hermione left with a frown on his face. What did she think she was doing, going outside without a cloak on? Did she want to catch a cold or something? Well, If it wasn't for his child in her stomach, he wouldn't give a rat's ass...
He excused himself from his guests as he exited the hall to go up to her room and grab her cloak for her.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hermione kicked off her shoes as she slowly sat down on the stone bench. Her mouth lifted into a smile as she breathed in deeply to take in the warming sent of the roses that surrounded her. Her head rolled back onto her shoulder as her gaze lifted toward the sky, and the sparkling stars above her.
"Granger...Fancy meeting you here," sneered a voice beside her.
Hermione gasped and turned to see Pansy standing on wobbly not 10 feet away. Hermione's eyes instantly flashed to the wand that Pansy held in a steady hand, which was pointed directly at her. And she suddenly realized with horror, that her wand sat in her room, which was simply too far away to be any source of protection.
"Why do you look so frightened, Granger?" Pansy slurred as she took a few steps closer. "I would have thought that you'd expect me here. This is my life that you're living. And that is my child that you're carrying..."
Hermione's eyes narrowed. "What are you on about Parkinson?" Pansy's head rolled back as she laughed loudly.
"Don't play stupid with me, Granger. I know that you know. I know that you know that I know..." she laughed. Hermione took a step back only to find the bench blocking her path.
Great. I'm standing here wandless in a garden with a crazy bitter woman blocking my only way of escape...
"I suppose I'm partly to blame, If I hadn't made that little mix up in Potions, none of this would have happened," Pansy said, mostly to herself. Hermione froze.
...Mix up in potions?
Pansy looked up at Hermione at smirked. "You mean to tell me that you haven't figured it out?" Pansy broke into a wild laughter once more and lowered her wand so that she could slap her knee in amusement.
This is it...
Hermione took a deep breath and ran straight toward Pansy, who in the last second lifted her wand to Hermione's face and yelled, "Immobulus!"
Hermione felt herself freeze and was unable to stop herself as she fell to the ground and painfully landed on her back. She frantically searched over her body for any clue that the baby was hurt, and was instantly relieved when she found nothing.
Pansy bent down beside Hermione and smiled. "Close one, Granger. I wouldn't want you escaping now that I finally have you in my grasp, now would I?" Hermione could do nothing but stare up at her with frightened eyes. Pansy's smile suddenly disappeared. Hermione watched with horror as Pansy slowly lifted a hand and brought it down over and over again onto her face. Hermione felt blood pool out of her nose and drip down the side of her mouth as the cold air bit painfully at her open wounds.
After Pansy had her fill. she stood and smiled as she looked down at her work. "Not so pretty anymore, are you Granger? In fact, all that blood on your face makes you look like hell. But you deserve it. You deserve everything that you get tonight..." Pansy pointed her wand down at Hermione and yelled. "THIS IS MY LIFE THAT YOU'RE LIVING, GRANGER! YOU STOLE IT!!" Pansy was breathing deeply as she lowered her wand and a crazed look washed over her face. "And you will pay."
A sob broke free from Hermione's throat as her gaze traveled down to her stomach.
...My baby.
Pansy lowered herself to the bench beside Hermione and crossed her legs comfortably. "So when did you get pregnant? Was it from that night..." Pansy's eyes lowered. "Or was it from before? I have to say, If it was from before, you did an awfully good job in hiding it. I had no idea that anything was going on until that night that Draco screamed your name while we were having sex..."
Hermione would have gasped in shock if she had the power to move her jaw.
"So I'd thought I'd fix the situation by turning your attention to someone else, like that little red headed weasel I had the pleasure of being partnered up with in Potions. It was simple really. All I had to do was take one of his hairs and drop it into your potion, while making you think that you'd already added your main ingredient," Pansy scowled. "As you can see...it didn't turn out quite according to plan. What I thought was Weasley's hair on my robe was actually Draco's. How I got those two mixed up, I have no idea. Draco's hair is beautiful and silky. Weasel's hair is corse and...red!" Pansy sighed. "Well it happened, and it messed up my whole plan, but the fact of the matter is, that if you hadn't interfered with my life in the first place, NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED!" Pansy stood and once again pointed her wand at Hermione, only this time it was directed toward her stomach.
"It ends now. I can not allow that dirty child to live. After I kill it, I will kill you. After I kill you, I'm going to take my life back."
Hermione's soul was pulsing. NO NO NO! I WON'T LET YOU TAKE MY CHILD!
Pansy's eyes locked on her stomach. "AVADA KE-"
"Miss. Granger! Miss. Granger, are you out here?" Came Arthur's voice from the other side of the garden. Hermione' s heart was pounding in her chest.
Arthur! Please, save us! Save my baby!!
"Miss Granger?" his voice was coming closer...he was going to save them! Everything was going to be okay!
"Arthur! We're over here!" Hermione's eyes widened as her gaze went over to Pansy, who made no move to lower her wand as Arthur entered the clearing. "Finally! You have no idea how difficult it was not to kill her."
No...no, this can't be happening...
Arthur stood in front of her and Hermione watched with horror as what looked like, regret flashed over Arthur's face before it settled into an expressionless mask and he turned back to Pansy.
"Let's make this quick. We can not be affiliated with her demise, otherwise this whole thing will be ruined," he said grimly.
Pansy frowned. "You promised! I've done my part, now when do I get my spot back in the Malfoy family?" She asked with a whine.
Arthur shook his head with annoyance and bent down to Hermione. "I'm sorry that it has to be this way, Miss Hermione. I have nothing against you. But a promise was made many years ago between myself and Lord Draco's father. I promised him that I'd see to Lord Draco's marriage to Miss. Parkinson if Lord Lucius was to perish. And I, as a servant to the Malfoy family, cannot let that promise die." Hermione was begging him with her eyes as he stood and he too, lifted his wand.
Pansy's wand pointed toward Hermione's unborn child and Arthur's pointed toward Hermione's heart.
A hot tear ran down Hermione's cheek as her gaze went back to her stomach.
Don't worry, my baby. I'll finally be able to hold you in heaven...
