Chapter 13
After catching her breath, and unable to stop herself from picturing the look on Severus’ face when the water hit him, she burst out laughing.
Severus was furious, and the sound of her incessant laughter in the next room was not helping his mood. He burst through the door, a foul look on his face as he stalked past her, hair and clothes dripping, and slammed the door to his bedroom. He was angry at being caught unawares, humiliated at being soaked in front of Kathy, cold, tired, and he wanted nothing more than to tighten his fingers around Dumbledore’s neck until the old coot stopped breathing. Then he might sleep for a week.
Once he was dried and had a change of clothing, he felt a little more human again and exited his bedroom.
Fortunately for Kathy, she’d managed to contain her glee at his previous predicament, but she daren’t make eye contact with the man, for fear she would start laughing again.
“You need to return to your own rooms now, I am expected in the Hall for breakfast and I would prefer that you not be in my rooms during my absence.” Severus did not look directly at her when he spoke.
His tone brooked no argument, so Kathy turned to leave. “Look, about last night, I’m sorry. I was just a bit, out of sorts after everything that happened.” Without waiting for a reply, she headed back to her own rooms.
On entering her living room, she steeled herself, then headed for the bedroom to stand in front of the mirror. She poked it and stepped back quickly, waiting to see if it would say anything. When it didn’t she poked it again. “Hello, are you in there?” She asked it. The mirror still didn’t respond. “Well of all the awkward, cantankerous… “ She scowled at it and flounced away.
After eating her breakfast, once again provided by an elf, the dishes disappearing when she finished, Kathy wondered what to do with herself. The whole place was clean and dust free, there were no pots to wash, no laundry or mending to be done, not even a pair of shoes to polish. Even her bed was made up. A life of leisure was not something she was accustomed to and she wondered how the fancy ladies of the world coped with the incessant boredom that was already invading her new life.
Kathy rearranged the brush, comb, and few nick-knacks on her dressing table several times, she checked out the bathroom from top to bottom, fascinated with the spray of water that came down when she turned the tap in the odd cubicle. When she pressed a knob on the second toilet she was amazed to see water spurting up, instead of gushing down. She moved the furniture around in the living room, then placed it back in its original position, and pulled everything out of the immaculate kitchen cupboards so she could clean them. The trouble was, every time she turned her back to rinse out the cloth, an elf would appear and replace everything in the blink of an eye. Eventually she felt ready to explode and gave up.
Every hour she heard a bell, followed by the sound of many feet and voices. None of the doors she tried opened onto wherever the noises came from, so she was unable to snoop on whoever was out there.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door to Severus’ office, the room with all the jars, and stepped inside. She left the door open for a quick exit if needs be and wandered round the room. Steeling herself, Kathy turned and looked at the… things. “Ugh, you lot are disgusting. You’re also very grimy.” She said happily, returning to her kitchen and grabbing rags from under the sink, a bucket of soapy water and anything else she thought might be useful.
Severus stormed to his office at the end of morning classes. He was tired, irritable, and some idiot third year had melted his cauldron. When he opened his door and saw every one of his prized collection of bottled, gruesome creatures lined up on the floor, the glass sparkling with cleanliness while Kathy was intently cleaning the shelves, he rooted to the spot and stared round his office. Even his books had been dusted, the glass fronted cabinets gleaming, he could actually see through them now, and his desk neatly arranged.
House elves were not allowed in his office and classrooms, for the simple reason that he preferred his own disorganised chaos. He had a system, and that system consisted of a jumbled disarray of everything he needed on a day to day basis. Only he knew how it worked and where everything was, and only he was allowed to move anything.
“What exactly do you think you are doing?” He asked. His tone was soft, but dangerous, the turbulent rage bubbling just beneath the surface.
“Kathy didn’t notice, she never even looked round. “Cleaning up. This room was filthy and I had nothing to do. Why do you keep these things? What are they? Hm, on second thoughts, don’t tell me, they’re horrible.” She continued wiping the shelf, then began replacing the jars, trying not to look too closely at what they contained, at the same time morbidly fascinated by them.
Severus stood in the doorway for several minutes trying to force down his fury at the intrusion, then closed the door with a resounding thud and stormed up to the Headmasters office.
“You have to move her to a different part of the castle. She is wreaking havoc with my personal space. Even as we speak she is in my office, MY office, and… cleaning. How dare she clean my office. I want her out of the dungeons. Today. Now.”
Albus sat at his desk, fighting to hold back the grin from his madly twitching lips. He focussed his gaze on a small tome that sat on the far edge of the desk as he tried to form words without laughing. The thought that the young woman had dared to spring clean Severus’ office was too much and a chuckle escaped him. “I’m sorry Severus, truly I am, but “ Another chuckle escaped him. “you know she cannot be housed anywhere else. Besides, will it really do you harm to have a clean space in which to work?” He asked, wiping the mirthful tears that sprung from his eyes.
His reply was the echoing slam of his door as the Potions Master stormed off in a huff.
By the time Severus had been to lunch and returned to his office, he’d calmed down, slightly, and was glad to find that Kathy had left.
He inspected his office, every book, jar, bottle, instrument, quill and piece of furniture was either sparkling or gleaming or just sitting in it’s original position free of dust. Nothing was out of place from how he normally kept it, but the room did appear to be more organized. Still, the resentment did not fade completely, she had no right to enter this office without his express permission. No matter how bored she was.
At least Cyclops seemed happier in his jar, the one eyed creature actually had the nerve to wink at him. He wondered if she had any adverse effects from touching his collection, though it was unlikely since they were all housed behind glass.
He picked up the stack of parchments he needed for this afternoons lessons and left his office, closing the door gently behind him.
Kathy finished her lunch, then ended up having an argument with the elf that came to take away the dirty dishes.
She wanted them left, and some washing up liquid brought so she could do her own pots.
The elf became quite distressed, believing it had wronged the woman somehow and started hitting itself on the head with the metal tray.
Kathy got upset when the elf’s head started bleeding and grabbed the little creature, crying for it to stop hurting itself.
The elf slowly calmed and Kathy released it.
The elf fell to the floor, out cold.
She stared at it in horror, realising she must have drained it of its energy. She was about to touch it, feel for a pulse, when it struck her that if the little creature was still alive, more contact from her might inadvertently finish it off. She tried the door to Severus office, only to find it was now locked so she banged on the door. Unfortunately Severus had left moments before. Kathy started to panic, then remembered Severus mentioning he wore gloves when he’d rescued her. But she didn’t have any gloves. Running into the bathroom, she grabbed a large towel, dashed back to the elf and wrapped it in the towel before lifting it in her arms. As soon as she did she felt the painful loss of holding one of her babies in her arms. Tears spring to her eyes and she rubbed them away roughly. Now what did she do? It wasn’t as if their was someone she could take the elf to, she had no way of leaving her rooms. She wished she could ask Severus what to do.
Whether it was Severus, his sixth year advanced potions class, or Kathy herself that was more shocked when she appeared in his classroom on her bum and holding a thick bundle, it was never clear. But Kathy almost dropped the unconscious elf, some of the students whooped with glee at the sight of a young woman apparating inside of Hogwarts, while others stared amazed and some looked afraid.
Severus stared at her open mouthed for a full two seconds, before leaping from behind his desk and looming over her, arms crossed and an angry, but shaken expression on his face.
