Just before the adults went to bed James very carefully opened the door tiptoed into the room where Harry was sleeping. He had intended to just sit and watch his son sleep like he had done when Harry was a baby. He wasn’t going to stay long.
He stepped over the sleeping forms of Fred and George and sat down in a small chair in the corner by the dresser. He was content to just sit and quietly stare at his only child. Most parents had gotten past this stage when their children were teenagers, but Harry had been taken from James when he was only a baby. What he hadn’t intended to do was fall asleep while sitting there.
When Harry was roused just before dawn he found his father still in the chair, his head resting back on the wall and tilted to the side a little. Most teenage boys would find it creepy to wake up to their father in their bedroom, but not Harry. It made him feel loved.
Molly urged Harry to hurry up and go downstairs for breakfast. The kids who couldn’t apparate were being taken to a port key by Arthur. Bill, Charlie, Percy, and James were able to sleep in and apparate later.
Molly shook her head and gently levitated James to the bed where Harry had been sleeping. James woke several hours later, wondering how he had gotten into the bed. He lay there for a few minutes before rolling out of bed and heading downstairs where everyone else was already sitting around the little table in the kitchen.
He sat down in an empty chair and Molly handed him a cup of steaming tea. “Everyone get off okay?” he asked.
“Yes,” Molly answered. “They were a little sluggish at first, but I expect the walk woke them up.”
“Good,” James said as he took a cautious sip of the hot liquid in his cup. “So… when do we need to leave?”
“Not for another few hours,” Percy spoke up. “We are expected to arrive at the apparation point at exactly twelve fifteen P.M.”
James rolled his eyes. “Okay time keeper.”
The four of them sat there and talked to pass the next few hours. When it was nearly time to leave they all headed upstairs to put on their muggle clothing. James had a little more work to do since he was supposed to disguise himself.
“James, hurry up!” Percy called out when it was nearly time to leave.
“I’ll come down when I’m damn good and ready!” James yelled back.
Percy was about to say something else when James finally came down. Everyone in the room couldn’t help but stare. His clothes were nothing special; blue jeans and a black leather belt with a plain black T-shirt. It was the other changes that made the Weasleys do a double take. His hair was now bleached-blonde and hung down a little past his ears. He had darkened his eyes to a deep ocean blue, and made his nose a little bigger and more pronounced. His chin also seemed to stick out a little farther. And last but not least, he seemed a good few inches taller, and his shoulders were broader.
“What do you think?” James asked as he turned around on the bottom step.
“Wow….” was all Bill could say.
“Yeah, wow….” Charlie chimed in.
Percy tapped his foot. “We need to get going.”
James scowled at Percy and picked up his sapphire blue cloak. “You know, you may be able to get away with being an ass with your family, but I suggest you curb that attitude with me.”
Bill and Charlie gave each other a look as James disappeared. Percy didn’t look concerned though. The older Weasley boys just shook their heads as they followed James.
Once all four of them were there they headed out to find the rest of their family. When they finally found the rest Arthur was trying to start a fire and not having much luck.
“What are you doing?” James asked.
“Starting a fire. Muggles who go camping always have a fire,” Arthur answered as he tried to light another match.
James looked around at the extravagant tents and shook his head. The other wizards didn’t seem to be trying to hide much. “Well you’re doing it all wrong,” he said finally and set to work. “You don’t have enough kindling.”
Within minutes James had a nice hot fire going that they used to cook lunch. Ludo Bagman, the head of Magical Games and Sports, stopped by mid afternoon. He and Arthur exchanged a few pleasantries while James just sat quietly on the ground and tried to be inconspicuous.
Ludo asked them if they’d like to place a bet. Arthur bet one galleon, but when Fred and George wanted to place a bet, he tried to discourage it. The boys insisted on it though, and bet that Ireland would win, but Victor Krum would catch the snitch.
“I’ll take a piece of that action,” James spoke as he climbed to his feet. “Fifty galleons.”
Arthur looked very nervous because he was supposed to make sure James didn’t out himself. “All right,” Ludo smiled and started writing in his little book again. “”I don’t think I’ve seen you before. What’s your name?”
“Chris Rodgers,” James answered without a second’s hesitation. “I work with Bill here. He invited me to come along.”
Ludo seemed to accept the explanation, and was dragged away moments later by Barty Crouch. Arthur breathed a sigh of relief. “Chris… what do you think you were you doing?”
“Placing a bet,” James answered with a cheeky grin.
“You’re supposed to be inconspicuous!”
James sighed and rolled his eyes. “Don’t have a heart attack. I’ve got it covered.”
Harry, who up until then was just enjoying having his dad there decided to speak up. “Dad, could we go for a walk? There’s something I want to talk to you about.”
“Sure,” James answered and followed his son toward the woods.
As they walked Harry told James about the dream he had earlier in the summer. He had sent a letter about it to Sirius, but he figured since he had his dad there now talking about it would make him feel better.
James listened quietly, and then thought about it for a moment. “What do you think it means?” Harry asked as he stopped and turned toward his father.
“I don’t know,” James answered honestly. “I mean… it could be nothing. However, one never knows when Voldemort is involved. At the very least we should probably be careful.”
Harry had to admit that even though his dad hadn’t given him any definite answers, he did feel a bit better. At the very least an adult was aware and could look out for him.
They walked back and joined up with Ron and Hermione. They had decided to walk around to all the different vendors. James went along at Harry’s insistence, wanting to spend time with his son just as much as Harry wanted to have him. Harry was very grateful that his friends didn’t seem to mind.
Later on in the evening little red lamps lit up along the paths leading into the woods signaling everyone that it was time to head to the stadium. James led the kids through the crowd to find Arthur and the others since Arthur had the tickets. The wizard at the gate commented about their excellent seats and sent them straight to the top.
They marched up the stairs to the box where they would be watching the game. Harry stared at the huge crowd in amazement the entire time. The young Gryffindor found it a little odd when his dad insisted on sitting on the end. Harry wanted to sit by his dad; just like he had wanted to be near him since yesterday, but because their cover was that James was with Bill, Bill had to sit next to him. Harry started wondering why Dumbledore still wanted to keep it secret that James was alive.
Harry sat himself next to Bill, and had Ron sit beside him. James noticed his son’s disappointed look and felt a little guilty, but not quite guilty enough to switch seats with Bill. He reached over and patted Harry’s leg. “This is a once in a lifetime experience, enjoy it with your friends,” he whispered.
It was shortly after that when the Minister of Magic himself Cornelius Fudge entered with the Malfoys following right behind him. Arthur and Percy stood to greet Mr. Fudge, while the kids glared at the Malfoys. James sighed and suddenly felt a little depressed. He wanted to tell everyone about his relationship with Lucius, but apparently there was already some bad blood between the two groups.
As soon as the blonde man on the end stood up Lucius knew who he was. It took everything he had not to smile. Fudge introduced everyone and they exchanged strained pleasantries. Lucius also felt a little bit depressed because his and James’ worlds were so different and it didn’t seem like they would ever be able to combine them.
Lucius moved to sit in the empty seat beside James, careful not to look over at him too much even though what he wanted to do was jump on James and shag him right there on the floor. Instead, both men cautiously inched their hands out toward each other until they were touching while being careful to continue staring straight ahead.
Before the match started the mascots from each team were going to do a little show. The Bulgarians sent out veelas. As the beautiful creatures started to dance the men in the crowd went wild. Harry and the Weasley boys were no exception. Harry looked like he was going to jump over the railing, and James had to grab him by the back of the shirt and throw him back down into his seat. Hermione did the same with Ron.
There was a loud roar of disapproval as the veelas left the field, but that seemed to be forgotten as the leprechauns started their little song and dance. Gold coins rained down on the stands and everyone scrambled to pick them up. Only James and Lucius remained in their seats, content to just be near each other.
When the leprechauns finished the match began. It certainly wasn’t a boring match. The ball was being passed so fast that Ludo Bagman was having trouble announcing. All he could do was call out the names. Ireland did well, scoring a few goals quickly.
The farther ahead Ireland got the more brutal Bulgaria became. At one point the mascots actually starting fighting each other. The referee was so busy trying to break up the fight he actually stopped paying attention to the game.
It had only been a few hours when Victor Krum, the Bulgarian seeker, dived for the snitch. Ireland’s seeker was hot on his tail, but Krum caught it. The final score was 150 Bulgaria, and 160 Ireland. The twins’ prediction had come true. Bulgaria had caught the snitch, but Ireland had won. The Irish cheered loudly from their seats.
Everyone rose from their seats and started to make their way from the stadium. Harry, who was looking at his dad, saw something that both scared and puzzled him. He saw Lucius Malfoy lean over and quickly whisper something into his dad’s ear as the two passed each other! Harry felt a little sick, but he decided not to say anything. He pushed the scene to the back of his mind, deciding that he’d just been imaging things and walked hand in hand with his dad.
When they reached their tent it was late but nobody could sleep. They could hear the Irish celebrating from all the way across the field. Arthur decided that since the noise would probably keep them up anyway, it wouldn’t hurt for them to have one more cup of hot cocoa before going to bed. James spiked his own cocoa with a little rum, and passed the bottle to Bill and Charlie. He also kept looking at his watch; more odd behavior that only Harry noticed. Once the celebrating calmed down and the kids were starting to fall asleep Arthur sent them to bed. James hugged Harry, and then went to sit outside.
It was only another hour or so before it began. As soon as the first scream hit James’ ears he jumped into action. The first thing he did was rouse Arthur to make sure he got the kids to safety. Arthur was going to put James in charge of leading the kids into the woods, but as soon as the red haired wizard turned around to tell him, James was gone. Arthur cursed and set about waking the kids.
Harry woke to mass chaos. The air was filled with screams and the sound of people running. It took him a minute to wake up and get moving. Harry looked for his dad as Arthur pushed him out of the tent and toward the woods, but his dad was nowhere in sight. Harry didn’t have much time to worry about it however, because Ron grabbed his hand and dragged him.
They ran into Draco Malfoy at the edge of the woods. He was leaning against a tree rather calmly watching the scene. “Ah, Potter,” the blonde boy grinned. “Enjoying the show?”
“Where are your parents?” Hermione asked, but not out of concern of course.
“None of your business Mudblood!” Draco spat at her.
Harry couldn’t help but stare back out onto the field. What he saw made him sick to his stomach. A group of wizards in dark robes and masks marched through the field burning everything in their path. They also seemed to have muggles hoisted into the air somehow. They were headed right for where Harry and his friends were standing!
Before Harry could worry about it a beam of golden light shot seemingly out of nowhere at the muggles, and each of them were engulfed in what looked like a giant golden bubble. The masked men didn’t seem to notice this. However, when Harry heard what sounded like the faint howling of a wolf, one of the masked wizards dived for cover. Harry could have sworn he saw a glint of some small glass object flying through the air at them. Seconds later there was a massive explosion. The muggles flew higher into the air, but they seemed to be protected by the golden bubbles around them. The only thing that did happen to them was that when they hit the ground they started to bounce like rubber balls in the bubbles. The Ministry officials who had been trying to save them were now leaping about almost comically trying to catch them.
The wizards in robes hadn’t been so lucky. Harry stood completely shocked as the wizards were thrown into the air, some of them in pieces. What shocked him even more was the cackling that followed from whoever had caused the explosion.
“Father!” Draco screamed in horror and ran out onto the field.
Harry was almost sure Lucius had been one of those masked men, and found himself wondering if Lucius was one of the ones who had been blown to bits. The look on Ron’s face told Harry he was thinking the same thing too, but Ron seemed happy about the gruesome prospect.
Hermione on the other hand was trying not to think about it. “Come on,” she said as she tugged on both boys’ sleeves. “We’ve lost the twins and Ginny. Let’s go find them.”
***
Lucius was so nervous that he had to down a few extra shots of Firewhisky. The entire time his ‘friends’ were torturing the muggles and causing mass chaos and confusion, Lucius was listening closely for the signal. It had been years since he’d done this, and he hoped he wouldn’t miss it.
They were almost all the way across the field when he heard it, a faint howling noise. Not wanting to waste time, he dived into the nearest tent. As soon as he hit the ground he heard the explosion. The tent in which he was hiding was violently ripped apart and debris flew everywhere.
Lucius had a few nicks and cuts, but he wasn’t seriously hurt. He used the cloud of dust that hung in the air for cover as he bolted into the woods. When James saw him running, he followed right behind.
Lucius ran until his lungs started to burn, then he stopped and leaned over to catch his breath. James didn’t seem to be out of breath at all. “That…. You were brilliant!” Lucius smiled up at his lover.
“And you led them right to me, just like old times,” James returned the smile and kissed Lucius passionately. Both men’s adrenaline was pumping and made them want to fuck right there in the dirt.
They might have done just that had they not both looked up at the sky moments later to see the Dark Mark hovering in the sky overhead. James stepped back and raised an eyebrow at Lucius.
Lucius held his hands up defensively. “I have no idea I swear!”
Before James could say anything there was a commotion not far from where they stood. Curses flew everywhere, bouncing off trees. Then there was some yelling. Both men went to investigate, not seeing any harm in being in the woods. A small crowd of wizards stood in a circle around three others. James and Lucius couldn’t see who had been caught, so they moved in a little closer.
James didn’t clearly make out the forms of Harry, Ron and Hermione until it was too late to send Lucius back out of sight.
“Lucius!” Barty Crouch called out when he saw them. “Could you come here a minute?”
Lucius nervously approached the wizards, with James trying to hide behind him. Lucius was afraid that they suspected something and would blame the Dark Mark on him.
“Lucius, did you see anything just now?” Barty asked.
“No…” Lucius shook his head. “What’s going on?”
“You there- what about you?” Barty motioned to James’ half hidden form. “What were you two doing out here that you didn’t see anything?”
James decided to go for broke and marched up to Barty, standing nose to nose with the man. “We were fucking each other’s brains out. Got a problem with that?” James answered stiffly.
Barty paled, but not quite as much as Lucius. “N… no….” Barty stuttered.
“Aren’t you the one with Arthur’s son Bill?” Amos Diggory spoke up.
“Yeah,” James answered. “What can I say; I have a thing for rich blondes. We’ve been out here in the woods for a few hours.”
“Well, looks like there’s nothing more we can do here,” Mr. Diggory shook his head and patted Arthur on the shoulder.
The other Ministry officials nodded and left. Harry stood staring at his father in shock and anger. “How could you!” he shouted when the crowd was gone.
Lucius backed up a little. “We might as well come clean,” James sighed. “We’re caught.”
Arthur was angrier than James could ever remember seeing him. “James, did you have anything to do with what happened here tonight?” he asked, his voice reflecting the anger in his expression.
“Yes, and no,” James answered truthfully.
“Explain,” Arthur demanded.
“I will,” James sighed. “I’ll explain everything to all of you,” he said as he looked to Harry. “But could we go back to the tent and talk in private?”
The small group marched back to their tent silently. James hadn’t wanted the truth to come out like this, but it seemed there wasn’t much choice. When they reached the tent Bill, Charlie, and Percy were already back and bandaging themselves up. Percy’s eyes widened at the sight of Lucius, but Bill and Charlie didn’t seem nearly as surprised as one would have thought.
Arthur turned toward James and Lucius. “All right, one of you explain.”
“Don’t blame James,” Lucius spoke up very quietly. “Yes, the whole thing was planned. When James came to visit me the other day I told him about it, and made him swear not to tell anyone else. Had the Ministry found out the others would have known there was a leak, and I didn’t want them to find out that that leak was me. I did it to protect myself. James was only following my wishes by not telling you.”
“And the Dark Mark?”
Lucius shook his head. “That we didn’t plan. I honestly don’t know who conjured it.”
Arthur seemed to accept the explanation. Harry wasn’t going to be so easy. He stood in front of his father with his arms crossed. “All right, your turn. Explain.”
“The first thing you have to understand Harry is that this-” James moved his finger back and forth between him and Lucius, “has been going on since before you were born.”
“So you cheated on my mother!” Harry shouted.
James sighed and sat down. “Not exactly. Harry, she knew. She knew I was into men, and didn’t mind as long as I didn’t try to hide anything from her. She knew about Lucius, as did Sirius, Remus, Severus, and Narcissa.”
Harry stared at his father in disbelief. Lucius reached into his robes and pulled out a picture which he showed to Harry. It was a picture of two babies curled up together fast asleep in a play pen. “Harry, that’s you and Draco when you were about two weeks old. I’ve kept this all these years.”
“Then why did you try to kill me two years ago?”
Lucius sighed in frustration and hung his head. “I didn’t try to kill you. If you’ll recall, my house elf Dobby came to you before school started and told you not to go back to school.”
Harry looked a little surprised and confused. “How did you know-”
“I know because I sent him. I ordered him to tell you that he was coming to you without my knowledge, and of course I didn’t allow him to tell you who his family was. I was trying to make Arthur look bad and get that Muggle Protection Act of his repealed. I did everything I could to make sure you were out of harms way.”
“Speaking of which,” James stood up. “You owe Arthur and apology.”
“But…. I….” Lucius argued. Apologies weren’t in his nature.
James stomped on Lucius’ foot, causing him to double over and open his mouth in a silent scream. “Apologize,” James repeated.
“Okay, okay….” Lucius squeaked. He straightened himself up as much as he could with the throbbing in his foot, and faced Arthur. “Arthur, I’m sorry about what happened two years ago.” He glanced at James who was still glaring at him and tapping his foot. “And I’m sorry for being so rude to you and your family.” Lucius held out his hand. “Please forgive me.”
Arthur stared at the blonde for a moment before taking his hand and shaking it. “Apology accepted I suppose,” he gave a weak smile.
Harry could hardly believe what he was seeing and hearing. Everything he knew about Lucius Malfoy suggested that he never apologized for anything. And yet here he was apologizing to Mr. Weasley, and Harry wasn’t naïve enough to believe it was all because James had stomped on his foot. The Lucius Malfoy Harry knew would’ve attacked James rather than apologize to anyone.
“You really do love my dad don’t you?” Harry spoke up softly.
Lucius turned his attention back to Harry. “Yes Harry, I do,” he nodded. “I can’t explain it. So much comes with the Malfoy name. My father used to act like if something happened to me he would just be annoyed that he had to produce a new heir. Now that I’m a father I suppose maybe he was just teaching me how to live in our world. After all, I did the same with Draco, though I’ve tried to be a little more loving toward him than my father was to me. But then I got to know your dad. He taught me what unconditional love was. If I made my father angry, or if I did something to displease the Dark Lord, I had to fear the consequences. Your dad… he’d get angry with me sometimes, but he would forgive me eventually. The worst thing he ever did to me was give me the silent treatment.”
Harry listened to Lucius with a whole new outlook on things. Lucius had turned into a different man before his eyes, though Harry suspected he wasn’t really changing, only letting down his guard. “How did you two get together anyway.”
Both men smiled softly at the thought. “I’ll let you tell this one,” Lucius said as he took a seat.
“Well,” James sighed. “This is going to come as a bit of a shock, but Severus Snape had a little trouble with potions in school; the advanced stuff anyway. I suspect it may have been because Professor Slughorn wasn’t a very good teacher, but that’s beside the point. Slughorn appointed me Severus’ tutor because I was his best student at the time. It cost the man dearly, but I agreed to do it. Toward the end of the year Severus was making quite a bit of progress. He decided he wanted to get together with me over the summer so he could go back to school our seventh year and really surprise Slughorn. He couldn’t invite me to his home though, so he asked Lucius to try and arrange it so both of us could spend a few weeks with him. The inevitable happened and Lucius and I got to know each other.”
Lucius smiled and nodded. “As I said, I can’t really explain it. I was drawn to James’ fire, and was captivated by his spirit.” He leaned over and kissed James on the cheek.
Harry sighed and shook his head. “I…. This is a bit much to swallow. I’m going to need some time to digest this.”
“Understandable,” Lucius nodded. “I’d better go find my family. Draco is probably worried sick.”
James bade Lucius goodnight with a soft kiss before he left. Then he turned to face everyone else. “I suppose there’s no way we’ll be able to keep this from Albus now,” he sighed sadly.
“James,” Arthur said. “That informant you wouldn’t tell us about, the one who was slipping you all that good information….”
“Yes, that was Lucius,” James nodded. “He didn’t want Albus to find out because he was risking his life for me, and me alone. He didn’t want to be turned into a puppet for the Order.”
“That explains a lot actually,” Arthur said, nodding thoughtfully. “Anyway, I know we’ve all had a very exciting day, but we should try to get at least a little sleep before we head back home. I’m sure Molly will be worried when she hears about this in the morning.”
Everyone shuffled off to their beds and tried to fall asleep, but it was difficult. Harry was having the most trouble out of everyone, but eventually, well after everyone else was snoring sleep took him.
