“Professor?” Sirius asked as Dumbledore searched the bookcases for the volume he needed.
“Yes, Mr Black?”
Sirius gestured to Padfoot and Remus’s double. “Is it possible to send those two back to their worlds another way, before you cast the spell?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Because they’re not from the same world,” Remus explained, having realised the direction Sirius’s thoughts had gone in. “If we can get them to their respective worlds before you cast the spell to return everyone else, they will still be able to travel through portals without it killing them.”
Dumbledore frowned at Remus. “I thought we’d decided portal travel was far too dangerous to mess about with?”
“But one journey to reunite them after you’ve cast the spell couldn’t hurt,” Sirius said. “You can’t separate them again, not now they’ve found each other. Even if only one of them makes it back to their world they have a chance to be reunited again.”
Dumbledore smiled sadly as he shook his head. “Finding their individual worlds isn’t as easy as all that. Not without someone in the other world performing the exact same spell in the same location at the same time.”
“James and Lily on my world will open the portal,” Padfoot insisted. “They just need to be told what to do.”
“I’m not sure,” Dumbledore replied. “That was the mistake I made. I thought I could trust my doubles but was duped. We have no way of knowing whether your friends have already been corrupted.”
“They won’t have been,” Padfoot argued. “I know them and they’re my best friends. Just because all your doubles have been evil, doesn’t mean everyone else is.”
“Even if they are good people, it doesn’t mean they can’t have been snatched from their own worlds and replaced with doubles whose intentions are less than honourable.”
Remus’s double patted his arm. “Maybe Dumbledore’s right. We have no way of knowing who they’ve got to.”
“But it’s our only chance,” he said. “If I can get back to my world I can come to you after you’ve been sent back to your world with Professor Dumbledore’s spell.” Padfoot’s eyes hardened and Remus once again saw the steely determination that was very much a trait of Sirius Black.
Dumbledore sighed and shook his head. “I guess we’re going to do this the hard way.”
Padfoot turned to the Headmaster with a bright smile.
They remained in the hidden room just long enough for Dumbledore to find the book he needed. He slipped the volume into his robes and they formulated a plan to escape from the prison.
Ravenclaw Sirius volunteered himself as a decoy to distract the evil doubles from seeing the others leaving the building. When they pointed out it was likely he would be captured he reminded them that if Dumbledore’s plan worked it would send him home just as it did everyone else. Without any other option they slowly crept out of the hidden room.
It took several detours and a number of close calls before they made it anywhere near the entrance.
The doubles guarding the entrance didn’t look as though they intended to move any time soon.
“Where’s Sirius with this distraction?” Sirius asked from his vantage point above the entrance way. They hadn’t been spotted yet, but nor could they go any closer to the front doors without revealing their presence.
Suddenly an explosion sounded somewhere in the vicinity of Ravenclaw Tower.
All guards except one rushed to see what the commotion was. Sirius guessed they had learned their lesson about keeping the entrance completely free of human guards.
Dumbledore took care of the last guard with a body bind he didn’t even see coming and they swiftly ran for the doors.
“This is when an invisibility cloak or five would be really handy,” Remus said as they ran across the grounds.
Those with an animagus form, that being everyone except Remus and Dumbledore, transformed into their animals and kicked up their speed a notch.
“Show offs,” Remus huffed. How had he got so out of shape?
They were nearly at the gates when Dumbledore shouted for them to stop.
“What is it?” Remus asked as they caught up with the animaguses who had all transformed back.
“There are spells on the gate,” Dumbledore explained. “I can feel them repelling us even from this distance.”
Now he mentioned it, Remus too could tell there was magic on the gates. Despite the danger inside the castle, he was reluctant to go through the gates.
“I don’t remember this when we escaped before,” Sirius said. “We managed it without any problem.”
“The portal I opened was in the Forbidden Forest,” Remus’s double said. “Maybe we can get out of here that way?”
Dumbledore pointed his wand at the gates. “I don’t think so. This spell is strong and newly cast. I think they’ve improved security since you were last here. If you left via the forest last time, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to do so again.”
“Then what are we going to do?” Remus asked. “We can’t stay here much longer.”
“We go through the gates of course,” Dumbledore said. “The spell is strong and you will want to stop and turn back more than anything else, but if we press on I see no reason why can’t simply walk through the gates.”
“They should have put a dragon here to guard it or something,” Sirius said.
Remus smacked him on the back of the head. “Don’t say things like that. You’re only tempting fate.”
Sirius winked at him. “I wouldn’t want to be tempting anyone except you.”
They approached the gate and pushed on, despite the overwhelming desire to retreat.
It took much longer than it should have, but finally they all made it to the other side and it was just in time. They had been spotted and what appeared to be an army of Dumbledores were surging towards them.
“I think we’re safe to apparate now,” Dumbledore said. He turned to Padfoot and Remus. “Since you two are the only ones who have been there, you’ll have to take the rest of us side-along.”
Remus shook his head. “Sirius will know where to go. He’s been to James and Lily’s new house in our world and they’re in the same location.”
Dumbledore smiled. “Ah, yes, I know the place.”
“You’ve been there?” Remus asked.
“Oh yes. I stopped by for afternoon tea just a week before I got myself into this spot of bother.”
Remus’s double took hold of Padfoot’s hand as he was the only one who wasn’t sure where they were aiming for. “James and Lily have a flat in my world, not a house. I don’t want to end up in the wrong place,” he explained.
A few minutes later they all arrived outside the Potters’ house. Remus was relieved, although not entirely surprised to see they lived here in this reality too. Nor was it surprising to hear the two of them fighting from inside the house.
Sirius grinned. “I say we knock on the door quick before they get to the make up sex. They’ll be at it for hours.”
“Are you sure we can’t just do the spell out here?” Remus asked. “There’s no one about.”
Dumbledore shook his head. “The portal would attract too much attention, as would the patronus messengers. We’re safest inside the house where we can communicate with the other world without having to worry about looking over our shoulders.”
Remus approached the door and knocked. Lily opened the door and stared at the group on the step for several seconds. Remus supposed her reaction was to be expected. He didn’t imagine she was going to faint at his feet.
“Lily, who is it?” James asked as he popped his head round the corner. “Bloody hell,” he swore before he too passed out.
“Well, that’s just plain rude,” Sirius said as he stepped over Lily to help James while Remus bent down to assist Lily.
“Oh dear,” Dumbledore said as he looked around the hallway.
“What is it?” Remus asked as he patted Lily’s cheeks in an effort to rouse her.
“I do believe the Potters in this world might be muggles.”
“I don’t care,” Sirius said. “James and Lily will help us no matter what world they are on.”
“I’d just like to know why they fainted,” Remus said. “It’s not like we were casting spells or something. It seems a bit of an extreme reaction.”
“James is starting to come round,” Sirius said as he gave his friend’s double a rather harsh slap in the face to rouse him. “Come on, mate. Wakey, wakey.”
James appeared to rouse himself and pushed Sirius away. “Lily?” he called out frantically.
Lily was starting to come round as well and seemed to be less prone to the hysterics James was currently displaying. “How?” she said as she touched Remus’s cheek.
“How what?” Remus asked.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” Lily replied in a whisper. “You are dead. We buried you both a year ago.”
Remus shivered as the sensation of someone walking over his grave ran down his spine.
“Are you twins?” James asked. “Or triplets?” he added when he saw the others in the doorway.
Remus shook his head. “We don’t have time to explain everything. Let’s just say we’re from another dimension and that we need your help.”
“Another dimension?” James asked. “Like on TV or something?”
“Or something,” Remus replied. “Can we come in?”
Lily stood up and looked them over. “It appears to me you already are,” she said as she pointed through to the living room.
They crowded into the room and waited for someone to say something to explain their presence.
Sirius spoke first. “So, how did we die?” he asked.
Lily and James looked at each other. “We’re not exactly sure,” Lily said. “You were found dead in your flat together. No signs of a break-in and the doors and windows were completely secure.”
“The police couldn’t figure it out and eventually closed the case,” James continued. “The cops round here couldn’t find their backside with both hands if you ask me. It was murder, but no one believes us because of the lack of evidence.”
It had all the signs of a magic being involved. Either their doubles were muggles who had been attacked by wizards, or they were wizards, unbeknownst to James and Lily, who had got caught up in something they were unable to handle. Remus looked at Sirius who had turned rather pale. “Happy now?” he asked. “Is that what you wanted to hear?”
Sirius shook his head. “No. I vote we change the subject.”
James glared at him. “I vote you tell us what you’re doing here.”
Remus nodded and pulled out his wand. “We are wizards from other dimensions. We need to contact your doubles in the dimension Sirius,” he pointed at Padfoot, “comes from, so we can get him home again.”
“Oh, that explains everything,” James replied sarcastically. “Now, how about you try the truth?”
Remus pulled out his wand and pointed it at the vase on the mantelpiece. With a quick flourish of his wand he transfigured it into a mouse.
“That was my grandmother’s vase,” Lily shouted.
“Bloody ugly thing,” James muttered. “It looks better as a mouse if you ask me.”
Lily pointed her finger at his nose. “Don’t start that again. I haven’t forgotten what you said earlier about Petunia.”
Remus turned to Sirius and shrugged. They seemed to be focusing on entirely the wrong thing here.
Suddenly the reality of what they had just seen hit them and they turned with slack jaws to their guests.
“Don’t faint again,” Sirius ordered. “We just need to borrow your house as we know this is where your doubles lives. We need to contact them and use their help to get us out of here.”
Remus leaned towards Dumbledore. “I suggest we get out of here as quickly as possible and remove their memories of all of this.”
Dumbledore nodded. “May we use your attic?” he asked.
Sirius looked at him in confusion, but thankfully said nothing.
“Um,” James said with a glance at Lily. “I guess.”
They followed the Potters up the stairs and into the room. Dumbledore then deftly guided the Potters back to the stairs and a couple of quick charms saw them heading back downstairs with no memory of the people in their attic, but rather confused as to what they had come up the stairs for.
“Let’s do this,” Sirius said in a whisper so that the sound of their voices wouldn’t alert the Potters to their presence again. Appearing on their doorstep was one thing. Suddenly being in their attic with no explanation was another matter entirely.
