Pansy couldn’t breathe. She stayed where she was, watching as Ron finished the letter and folded it up. He walked over to his desk in the corner and wrote a short note, sending the owl off.
Pansy waited for him to approach her. She was paralyzed. What had the letter contained? She wanted to read it but then again she didn’t. She was on such a high from the day, she was too scared to deal with this.
“It’s ok. Your father wants to meet me that’s all.” Ron seemed calm and collected, but the look on his face when he wrote the letter was upsetting to her.
“Ron, may I read it?” She asked. The letter had been addressed to him, but she knew if she asked, that he would let her read it.
“If you want to.” He gave a sigh and handed her the letter. She loved that Ron let her in and didn’t try to hide this from her.
She opened the parchment and read.
Mr. Weasley,
As I am sure you know, my daughter has told her mother and I of her intention to marry you. As a pureblood you know that custom requires that the bridegroom meet his bride’s family first. Given that Pansy has gone against our wishes and left our home, we know that contacting her will do little good.
I would like to speak to you before the wedding, which as I understand will take place Friday.
We are men, Mr. Weasley, let us act like men.
It might be wise however if we met without the company of the women, they tend to be quite emotional at times.
Mr. Issac S. Parkinson
She handed it back. “What did you tell him?” She asked, although she already had a feeling he would agree.
“I told him I would meet him for coffee tomorrow at 11, at Cedrics coffee in Diagon Alley. No other place and no other time.”
“What if he sends you another time or place.” she asked, knowing her father.
“Then I will send the same reply. I won’t let him dictate to me when to go. If he wants to meet, then he can meet when I am available.”
Dinner that night was nice, but strained for Pansy. She was worried about what Ron and her father would talk about. Ron spent the night comforting her, trying to assure her that everything would be fine.
Pansy was less then confident, so she let Ron know about her father. He was quite and subdued in nature, but he had temper and he was quick with the insults and assumptions. He also had a hard time understanding other viewpoints besides his own. He was unwilling to compromise and quickly insulted when he was contradicted. He was a traditionalist who believed that he was always the parent and never less. He was also the authority in his home and sometimes he considered himself the authority outside his home. As Ron was marrying his daughter, he may try and put himself in authority over Ron, so he would have to watch out for commands and orders.
Ron took in everything she told him, even though he could do little to make her feel more comfortable.
The next morning, a flurry of owls descended on the house. Pansy set out a huge tray of owl treats outside on the porch, where they could drop the letters and help themselves. It looked like the majority of the invitations sent out had sent back the RSVP right away. Pansy was glad of something to go through as Ron met with her father.
He kissed her and hugged her, promising to come back right away. When he left, Pansy sat with Misty at her side. Together they went through the letters and took note of guests and their dates.
Ron appeared at Diagon Alley in jeans and a long sleeved t shirt. He wasted no time in heading to the small café. He took his coffee and planted his frame at a table outside. He was watching witches and wizards come and go, when a voice spoke behind him.
“Mr. Weasley?” Ron stood up and greeted the man behind him.
“Mr. Parkinson.” Even though Ron was taller, he still stood to his full height as he greeted the man, offering a hand.
“I see, you came alone. I was not sure if you would.” Mr. Parkinson arranged himself in a seat across from Ron. His robes were obviously tailored and expensive. He was groomed immaculately and dressed to his station.
“Yes, well Pansy wanted to go through the RSVP letters we received. I didn’t press the issue.” Ron said. This man kicked his daughter out of his house. In Ron’s opinion, he was only entitled to a certain amount of respect from him, that being the father of his future wife. He wanted to let him know that he valued Pansy, and it was her wishes he honored, not his.
“I see. Then it is your intention to carry on with this marriage?” He asked.
“Yes, why wouldn’t I?” Ron asked.
“Pansy’s mother and I have not approved. That should be reason enough.” He gave Ron a smile that implied Ron should have understood that.
“Pansy herself has agreed to marry me. That’s all the approval I need.” Ron was firm, looking Mr. Parkinson in the eye. He didn’t shift in his seat, but faced the man head on.
“So you would keep Pansy from her family?” He asked.
“I would never keep Pansy from anyone. You and your wife threw her out of her home.” Internally he was seething, but by stating what he and his wife had done, he was letting them know that he took Pansy’s word as fact and he would always support her first.
“Pansy knows that she can come home anytime she wishes.” He stated as if it was common knowledge.
“But for her to do that, she has to turn her back on someone that loves her?” Ron assumed.
“You love my daughter do you?” He said with a sarcastic lift of both eyebrows.
“Yes I do Mr. Parkinson. Very much. She has agreed to marry me in two days. The only way I won’t marry her is of she says she has changed her mind.” Ron spoke with confidence. Knowing Pansy wanted to be with him even though her parents disapproved made him strong. He would not disappoint her but letting this man dictate anything to him.
“I want a man with a future for Pansy.” His face was less relaxed this time.
“In other words, a man with riches.” Ron let out a laugh. “I may not have the vast fortune you have, but I have a bright future. I have a home that’s perfect and Pansy loves it. I don’t need everything you seem to think people need. I need only Pansy.”
Mr. Parkinson stared at the man in front of him. Ron gave in to temptation. Pansy would think he went mental, but he had to.
“Will you come to our wedding Mr. Parkinson?” He smiled and leaned forward on the table. “My family will be there. It would be nice to have both sets of parents there.” He almost laughed at the expression on the man’s face. “I know you will most likely not come but the invitation is open regardless. You and your wife are welcome.” Ron remained leaning forward, then slid an invitation across the table to the older man. Mr. Parkinson didn’t take it but he didn’t push it away either. He gave Ron a confused look.
“Mr. Weasley, do your own parents approve of this?” He asked.
“My mother, as most mothers are with their youngest son, thinks I am too young but accepts my decision. My father agrees that it is my life and he will celebrate what I celebrate. My parents support my life. They will be at the wedding.”
“Have they met my daughter?” Mr. Parkinson seemed almost concerned. But Ron didn’t know why.
“My mother met her briefly, but hasn’t seen her since Christmas. She and my father will meet before the wedding, along with the rest of my siblings.”
“Are you ashamed of my daughter that you don’t even introduce her to your parents?” Ron again held in his reaction. This man was baiting him and it was getting irritating, but he wasn’t about to let it be known.
“Are you so ashamed of who your daughter loves, that you throw her out of your home and family.” His was stern and his opinion of his fiancée’s father was evident. Mr. Parkinson had nothing to say. Ron took on a serious tone. He had only one more thing to say, then he would return home.
“Mr. Parkinson. I love Pansy. I am going to marry her Friday afternoon. The invitation to you and your wife is open. She is your daughter and while you may not want to let go, being angry will not make her return. It will only make her sad that she can’t visit.” With that said he stood and offered his hand. He was pleasantly surprised when the older man shook it. A little reluctantly, but he shook it.
Ron was optimistic that Mr. Parkinson might actually show up. He was not so optimistic that Pansy would let him live when she found out he had invited her parents.
