Hermione and Snape were the first couple to make it into the kitchen for dinner. They said nothing to each other as they walked toward the island. When they sat down, and sat on opposite ends of the counter.
When the food appeared in front of them, they began to eat silently.
Two minutes later, Remus and Luna appeared. And just like Hermione and Snape, they walked silently to the island.
Luna sat next to Hermione and Remus next to Snape. The only sound that could be heard in the kitchen was the sound of silverware scrapping across the plates.
Five minutes later, Ginny and Lucius appeared in the kitchen, arguing loudly.
“You’re a bloody idiot, Malfoy—why would you invest your money into a business whose share prices don’t reflect their profit after taxes?”
“Numbers are not the only component that matter, Miss Weasley. The company has a new CEO who has plans for improving the business.”
Ginny and Lucius made their way to the island, barely noticing the other two couples in the kitchen.
“Yeah, plans that will not only cut advertisement by close to twenty percent, but will decrease the stock prices by ten percent. How is that going to benefit any of the profit holders?”
“You are thinking in long-term, Weasley. His plan will bring profit for the first two years but the stock prices will begin to decrease afterward. I plan on investing for those two years and then sell will my shares at their peak price.”
They both sat in the last two chairs available at the middle of the counter. Food appeared in front of them but they paid no attention to it.
“That’s really slimy, Malfoy,” Ginny said glaring at him, her voice full of disgust.
“That is how you make money, Weasley,” Lucius quipped back.
“Money’s nice but what good does that do for the progressive businesses that need our support?” Ginny asked.
“They get my support when I have enough money to sustain my family and lifestyle,” Lucius answered.
“Besides, some businesses have the help of Biddybums to help them through,” Luna threw in.
Lucius and Ginny glared at the starry eyed Luna.
“Seriously, Luna, I wonder about you sometimes,” Ginny said, shaking her head. “By the way, did you get a hold of anyone today? I sent some owls to my family and haven’t received any replies from them yet.”
With Ginny’s attention suitably occupied, Lucius took that time to survey everyone else at dinner. The looks on Snape’s, Remus’ and Hermione Granger’s faces were all he needed to know that things were not going the way Dumbledore planned
“I wrote to my dad but I haven’t received anything either,” Luna said.
“What about you, Hermione?” Ginny asked.
Hermione was staring down at her dinner plate intently. Ginny was sure that she never heard the question.
“Hermione?” Ginny asked.
Hermione continued stare at her plate.
“Hermione!” Ginny shouted.
Hermione let out a squeak and dropped her fork.
She glared at Ginny.
“Goodness, Ginny, do you have to yell?” Hermione asked, glaring at her friend darkly.
“Maybe if you paid attention to something other than what’s in your head you would have heard me.”
“For your information, Ginny, these thoughts might just get us out of this house,” Hermione retorted.
“No they won’t,” Luna said as a giant ice cream sundae appeared in front of her, having finished her dinner.
Hermione turned her angry glare to Luna who was happily devouring the sundae.
“What is that supposed to mean, Luna?” she asked.
“You have a brilliant mind Hermione—but if Dumbledore had wanted us to get out, we would be out,” Luna explained.
Hermione rolled her eyes but said nothing. Normally Luna’s dreamy words wouldn’t have affected her. But that night after her argument with Snape and her frustration at not finding the solutions that she wanted, her patience with Luna was running short.
“I’m sorry to bother you about this now, Severus, but the full moon will be here in two weeks. Is that enough time for you to be able to brew the Wolfsbane potion?” Remus asked after the kitchen fell silent again.
“Hopefully we are not in this house long enough for you to transform. But in the event that we are, I will have to start brewing tonight to get the potion finished. And I will need assistance in order for it to be done in time,” Snape said.
Hermione glanced over to Snape sharply. She knew that this was a chance for Snape to call a truce between them and for him to acknowledge her as a competent assistant.
Snape continued looking down at his plate, eating his food.
“Thank you, Severus,” Remus said.
The kitchen fell silent again. Hermione tried to eat the rest of her food but she found she couldn’t with the knots in her stomach.
As she stood, she saw Snape stand as well.
They both made eye contact but Snape was the first to look away.
“Miss Weasley, you did well on your NEWTS, correct?” Snape asked, turning to Ginny.
Ginny paused with her fork halfway to her mouth.
She put her fork down.
“I received an O on them. I think that makes me more than competent,” she said.
“Then you can help me out in the potion’s lab downstairs. I expect to see you after you finish your dinner.”
Snape didn’t wait for Ginny to protest. He walked out of the kitchen.
Hermione’s face was aflame with embarrassment and anger. She practically ran out of the room so that she wouldn’t have to face everyone else.
Ginny swore under her breath and ran after her friend.
The air within the kitchen quickly became even more awkward than before.
Luna continued to eat her sundae, ignoring Remus while Remus seemed to be visibly ignoring Luna.
Lucius very much hated being in the middle of awkward couple spats—especially said couple didn’t know that they were having a couple spat.
Tapping his plate and watching it disappear; Lucius stood, nodded to both Remus, ignored Luna and left the kitchen.
