Chapter Thirteen: Salva Aestas (Escape for Summer)
Summer, 1973. The Hogwarts express pulled into Kings Cross station with a whistle, Sirius gazed out the window as his friends began removing their trunks and luggage from the racks above their heads. James paused and looked at his friend. “Come on Siri, we have to get off.”
Sirius sighed and smiled, he was worried about returning to his home, yet the thought that it would only be temporary was comforting beyond belief, with James’ confident reassurances he felt stronger and braver than he ever had done. So, with a small smile he pulled his trunk down and stepped off the train. Once on the platform he scanned the area and spotted his parents talking to Regulus, with a sharp breath he moved towards them, James caught his wrist. “I’ll see you in a week, Siri.” He said and embraced him, Sirius froze for a moment as he saw his parents watching then he grinned and returned it.
Remus smiled when they broke apart and Sirius turned to him, they embraced for a moment before releasing each other. Then, with a wave to Peter, Sirius began walking towards his waiting parents. All of a sudden he spun on his heels, a big grin on his face. Remus and James watched him lift his hands and put them to his lips, a loud howl echoed across the platform and Remus broke into laughter. James imitated Sirius and their howls rose above the chatter of the crowds, silencing those nearest, Remus shrugged and soon his voice joined those of his friends.

Sirius hated Number Twelve Grimmauld Place. He hated it with a passion and even now, as he stood upon its threshold knowing that he would only be spending a week in that dingy, dusty place, he felt that sick hate rise until it choked him.
His mother stepped in through the door and quickly got Kreacher to put Sirius’ trunk upstairs, then she walked to the living room and bade Sirius and Regulus to follow. They entered through the dark door and looked around, sat in a chair at the back of the room was a tall, beautiful woman with dark, heavily lidded eyes and a cold smile. Sirius’ hackles rose and he took a step back, hands descended on his shoulders as his mother held him in place. “Bella, it is so good of you to come.” Walburga said softly. “As we told you in the letter, Sirius has been having some...difficulties and frankly we can no longer cope with his rebellions.”
Bellatrix Lestrange inclined her head. “Of course Aunty, I understand your fears.” She stood, her long black robes trailing across the carpet as she drew closer to Sirius who was trapped in his mothers clutches. “Hello Siri, it’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”Sirius licked his lips nervously, remembering how his cousin had experimented on him, using spells no sane person would until his small body was curled into a ball and he was begging for death in his head. She grabbed his face in one hand and he was forced to look into her eyes, he stood perfectly still as she inspected him. “It’s such a terrible shame that you refuse to do what your mother tells you, she has tried very hard to make sure you stay on the right path...” She paused and her long nails dug into his cheeks, he managed to avoid wincing. “Regulus here has told me what you said at school, it was the talk of the family. The Black’s have a Bloodtraitor in their midst.” She released him and strode a little way away. “Sirius, do you know what happens to Bloodtraitor scum?”
Sirius clenched his hands into fists and looked his cousin in the eye. “I do.” He said softly.
“Then I ask why you decided to announce to the whole of Hogwarts that you don’t care about family or Blood?”
“Because...” He hesitated, then an image of James’ proud face bloomed in his mind and he threw caution to the wind. “Because it’s the truth.” He said firmly, Regulus gasped. Sirius looked at his brother for a long moment, he saw a look of hurt and betrayal on his face and he smiled softly, almost apologetically.
Bella laughed, a mad cackle that made Sirius shiver. “Oh poor, poor ickle Siwi!” She crooned, walking over to him and pushing hair from his eyes with one hand. “You have been brainwashed by those Mudblood lovers you’ve been calling friends.” Her eyes glittered dangerously, Sirius had always known she was mad. “You’re a child, the Dark Lord is forgiving of Children as he understands that they make mistakes...however, if you continue to pursue this line of thinking he will be sure to hunt you down and destroy you, just like the rest of those washed up, poor excuses for Wizards like the Potters.” She sighed and smiled. “Soon you will learn, Little Sirius, The Dark Lord will teach you to take pride in the blood running through your veins...” She lifted a silver knife, similar to his and slowly drew back his sleeve, his mother held him still as he flinched back. Bella’s grip was strong and he was stuck, she drew back the left sleeve of his jacket and dug the sharp point into his flesh. He let slip a soft gasp as pain ignited his veins. He breathed through his nose and tipped his head back, his eyes closed tightly as the cold blade scraped away at his flesh, carving something into it. When Bella was done she sighed happily. “Sirius, this is a reminder of what you could become and what you are...look.” She pushed his head so he forced to look at the wound.
On his lower left arm was carved a horrid skull with a snake protruding from its jaws like a tongue, he flinched violently as she grabbed it. “Ow!” He hissed and tried to yank himself free.
“This is not a real one, oh no, not like the Dark Lord lovingly bestows upon his most devoted followers, but it will serve to remind you that we will keep an eye on you...if you begin to make the correct changes we will reward you...do you understand?” She stroked hair from Sirius’ face, smearing his own blood across his pale skin. He nodded. “There’s a good boy.”
Walburga released Sirius and he stumbled slightly, he had been unaware that he had been leaning so heavily on his mother. He kept one hand clamped over the bleeding mark, he could feel his pulse beating through it; the throb, throb, throb accompanied his heartbeat as Walburga said farewell to Bella at the door.

That evening Sirius received a welcome visit from Alphard, after he had greeted him they sat in his room. Sirius was in the middle of telling his uncle about a particularly excellent prank he had played on Severus Snape when his sleeve slipped back to reveal white bandages beneath his robes, Alphard took his wrist in concern. “What happened?” He asked gently.
Sirius looked away. “Bella she...” He sighed and closed his eyes. “She cut me, to remind me not to rebel.”
“I see...come here.” Alphard undid the bandages and revealed the Dark Mark etched roughly into Sirius’ skin. He pointed his wand at it. “No magic was used so it will be easy to heal...” The wound healed up instantly and Sirius grinned. “Now, just don’t tell your mother, keep the bandage on to hide it.”
“Thanks.” Sirius said as he re-wrapped his arm and flexed his fingers. He paused a moment as his Uncles fingers moved to the back of his neck, he looked up into his uncles eyes and moved closer. “Oncle?”
“Yes Sirius?”
“Could you...help me with something?” Sirius retained eye-contact as he spoke, leaning closer and lifting his hand to put it gently on Alphard’s chest.
“Anything, Mon moineau...”
Sirius’ smile was sweet and innocent as he gazed up through his eyelashes at his uncle. “Well, I’ve been invited to visit with some friends...but I know mother won’t let me go. I was wandering if you could say that I was staying with you?” He moved so that he was on his knees before his uncle, having never consciously seduced anyone before he felt nerves make his stomach flutter but this would be the only way he could escape his dreary home. He slowly unbuttoned the first few buttons on his Uncle’s shirt and slid his hand inside, gently caressing the skin there. Alphard watched him from dark eyes as Sirius kissed him lightly on the lips. “Please...” He breathed softly against Alphard’s mouth.
“I can deny you nothing, Bien-Aimée...Of course I will do as you ask.” He wrapped Sirius in his arms and kissed him again, the pressure increased until Sirius felt a hot, wet tongue glide across his lower lip, begging entrance. Sirius obliged, he was perfectly happy to allow his Uncle to show him how much he loved him, especially if it meant that he could go stay with James over the summer.
“Oncle?” Sirius whispered softly. He was lying on his back on his bed, his fingers tangled in his blankets as his uncle gazed hungrily down at his naked body. It took all of his self control to prevent his hands from covering himself. Alphard’s hand was wrapped firmly around his erection as he gazed down at Sirius with an intensity that was almost frightening, yet he also found it slightly exciting.
“Sirius...” Alphard moaned and his eyes raked the boy’s body, he watched goose bumps erupt across his perfect skin. Sirius curled his toes, his eyes heavily lidded as he hid his feelings about the situation from his uncle. He dug his fingers into the sheets and waited, Alphard slowly opened Sirius’ legs and moved further back, he was looking at a place Sirius thought was extremely private. He made a small noise of surprise and made to cover himself up, but hands gripped his wrists. “Hush little one, I won’t hurt you...I promise.”
“But Oncle you c-can’t...”
Alphard smiled and ran his hands up Sirius’ thighs, they quivered beneath his fingers. “It’s only natural that I would want to explore every part of you, Sirius...I love you, what more could you expect except that I would wish to worship you?”
Sirius couldn’t think of anything to say to that so he took a shaky breath and let his head fall back to the pillows, his Uncle firmly yet gently moved his hands away from his most intimate place and he felt those same hands part his bottom. He flushed pink and closed his eyes tightly, hiding from the embarrassment. He gripped his pillows and slowly lifted his knees up he heard his uncle groan heavily and resume touching himself. He shivered as hot air brushed his skin. Tension made his muscles ache and he couldn’t stop himself from trembling, once again that feeling of wrongness filled him with dread, he pushed it away. He wouldn’t regret this, not if it meant he could see James.
Sirius was alerted to his Uncles completion by a heavy, desperate groan and hot fluid hitting his chest, he blinked once and turned his head from where he had buried it in the pillows. Looking down he saw a long, wet, sticky trail that led from where his Uncle was to his upper body, he shuddered suddenly wishing he could run to the bathroom and scrub himself from head to foot. He stayed perfectly still however and watched his Uncle recover. “Oncle? I-Is it...is it over now?” he whispered in a hoarse voice.
Alphard nodded and sighed, collapsing beside his Nephew and holding him gently. “You are truly beautiful, Mon moineau.”
“Merci, Oncle.” Sirius replied as he felt his uncle drift to sleep.

Sirius couldn’t believe it. It must have been some kind of miracle or a massive stroke of brilliant luck, he had to touch the door just to be absolutely certain he wasn’t dreaming and when he felt solid wood beneath his curious fingers a thrill shot through him. Grinning manically he knocked upon the red door.
The door creaked open to reveal a familiar face, James beamed happily when he saw Sirius standing on his doorstep. Without thought he flung the door open and threw his arms around him. “You made it!” He shouted gleefully.
“Yeah, it wasn’t hard.” Sirius replied as James released him.
“What did you do...?” James was cut off by a voice from inside the house.
“James, honey, don’t keep the poor boy out on the doorstep, invite him inside.”
“Yes mum.” James called through and stepped aside. “Welcome to my humble abode, Sirius.”
Sirius thanked him and stepped inside, the house was large and very homely. It was old, but it was also well loved. The decor was bright with moving paintings and photographs adorning the walls, flowers in a brightly glazed vase sat on a table in the hallway and Sirius smiled at them. “It’s so...lovely.” He said softly, he could feel the atmosphere of the place, it was warm and comfortable...it was how a home should feel.
James led him through the hall after closing the door, they passed a door that James told him led to the cloak room before he pushed open another door to reveal a beautifully decorated living room. A huge fire blazed in a grate at the head of the long room, comfortable sofas were scattered around the floor and reminded Sirius of the Gryffindor common room. He smiled and followed James towards a tall woman, her smile was kind and on closer inspection Sirius could see the resemblance to his mother in her face. She was older than he had expected, lines surrounded her eyes and mouth but her eyes sparkled with a kindness that almost made Sirius uncomfortable. “Sirius Black, welcome.” Dorea Potter said graciously, she stood in one elegant movement and hugged him. “James has told us so much about you, I think I know you as well as I know him by now. Please, sit. Would you like some tea?”
“Yes, thank you.” Sirius said feeling a little awkward. He sat down beside James who grinned at him.
Dorea wondered off to another door that led off the living room. James turned to him as soon as his mother had left. “So, how did you convince your parents to let you stay?”
“I told them I was going to stay with my uncle.” Sirius flashed his brilliantly white teeth at him in a sly smile. “They don’t have to know.”
“No, that’s true.” James smiled again. “So, what do you want to do?”
Sirius considered. “I don’t know, you decide.”
“Well, I want to do some flying...”
“Oh yes, that’s right you got on the team! In all the excitement I completely forgot. Well done mate.”
James puffed himself out like peacock and began ruffling up his hair. “Yeah, my dad was really chuffed! Oh! He got me a new broom! Wanna see?” Sirius nodded and watched as James ran off to collect his broom. Dorea returned bearing a tray with tea and biscuits. She put the tray down and poured the tea, just as Sirius took his cup James came running back in holding a sleek, shiny new broom. Sirius’ eyes widened.
“A Nimbus 1000!” He gasped as James held it out, the handle was glossy and the golden script decorating the sides was crisp and new. He reached out and touched it reverently.
“It’s a revolutionary design, capable of speeds up to a hundred miles an hour, and has the ability to turn three hundred and sixty degrees mid-air on a fixed spot. They combined the reliability of the Oakshaft Seventy Nine with the agility of the best Cleansweeps, it’s the fastest model on the market and used by the Professional leagues.”
“It’s amazing!” Sirius said in an awestruck voice. “You’ll kick arse on the team!”
“Yeah, best Chaser to hit Gryffindor Quidditch team!” James grinned and messed up his hair.

That summer was the best Sirius had ever experienced, James and he were inseparable, they did everything together. Dorea was kind and sweet, Charlus Potter was jovial and Sirius could see the resemblance to his son. Where Dorea had the Black elegance, with the thick straight hair and dignified features, Charlus was slim and his hair was as messy as his sons, the only difference was that Charlus had light, sandy blond hair. James had inherited his father’s eyes, face and messy hair but he had inherited his mothers black colouring. Whilst staying with the Potter’s Sirius, for the first time in his life, felt as if he truly belonged.
His smile rarely left his face as he and James spent long summer evenings flying around the large Orchard that resided out the back of their large, Manor-like home. They explored the near-by village of Painswick, with which Sirius was fascinated. The buildings were old fashioned Tudor style houses, the church with its tall spire was magnificent but most of all Sirius was utterly in love with the Potter’s home. It stood just outside Painswick upon a hill so it overlooked the myriad of fields and scattered woodlands. Behind the elegant house was a long apple Orchard with ancient gnarled trees that creaked in the wind, James and he played catch the apple when they had free time. Their laughter lifted to the high, blue sky and Sirius could not have been happier if he’d tried. At the bottom of the Orchard was a pretty little stream with a small, fairy-like bridge crossing it, Sirius and James spent lots of time there with their wands as they practiced duelling without magic. They worked on wand movements alone until Sirius tackled James to the grass, laughing all the while as they rolled about.
On one such occasion Sirius had been surprised by James’ ferocity as he was thrown backwards, he hit the ground with a gasp, his wand falling from numb fingers and rolling across the grass towards the roots of a nearby willow tree. He gazed up into James’ face as light and shadow played chase across his features, the sun beat down on their heads, Sirius couldn’t feel the heat anymore than he could feel anything that wasn’t James. Sirius’ lips parted slightly as James grabbed his hands roughly and pinned them above his head, he was trapped but he wasn’t afraid, he trusted James like he trusted no one else. Colour appeared high on his cheek bones as James gazed at him with an intensity that made heat sear his insides, like white hot flames he was devoured by James.
On some unspoken, unacknowledged cue they pressed their lips together, kissing each other with a passion neither had before. Sirius’ fingers tightened into fists above his head as he moved his head so he could ease James’ access to his mouth and avoid bumping noses. James’ grip on his wrists was tight, his nails dug bloody crescents into his flesh, Sirius could do nothing but tremble helplessly beneath James’ panting chest. They broke apart long enough to catch their breath, James leaned down and nuzzled at Sirius’ hair. “...What...what are we doing?” He said quietly, startling Sirius when hot breath tickled his neck. He shivered and moved so he looked up into James’ face.
“I...I don’t know, Jamie.” Sirius replied, feeling the gravity of the situation sitting heavily in his heart. “What do you want from me?”
James seemed confused by the question, a frown pinched his brows and he chewed his lip thoughtfully. “I want...” He seemed to consider deeply, his eyes as dark as the wood of an ancient oak. “I want us.” He whispered finally. “I...I know that two guys can’t and shouldn’t be...doing what we’re doing...but I...”
“..Can’t stop.” Sirius finished for him with a slow nod. “Have you ever...um...kissed a girl?”
James flushed and shook his head. “If I was it’d have to be Lily Evans.”
Sirius knew that, but it didn’t lessen the odd ache in his heart. He nodded.
“What about you? You don’t say much about...well, about anything...”
“I...” He paused, unsure what he could say, James surely knew that Sirius was a little more experienced than him, he couldn’t have failed to notice how much more confident Sirius was when he touched James. But how could he explain it? He didn’t want anyone, not even James, to know what he and his uncle had been doing. “...I’ve...done...stuff...b-before.” He said quietly and kept steady eye contact with James whose eyes widened.
“With who? When?”
Sirius shook his head slowly and kept his mouth clamped shut, James stilled before sighing and rolling off of him. They lay on their backs, gazing up at the sky and Sirius wandered, for the first time, how long he could keep the secret of his Uncle’s attraction to him a secret.
