And now, today's chapter:
"Are you sure he will come? His reply was…not very encouraging", Lucius asked Hermione for the fifth time in the last ten minutes.
Hermione sighed. She had managed to hide her nervousness about their dinner guest by throwing herself into getting ready and making herself presentable. She had been wrestling with her hair for the last few minutes, unsuccessfully trying to tame it into a bun and Lucius' worries were not helping her at all!
"Lucius, it's understandable that his reply was a bit…reserved. This is a huge change for him and it's going to take some time for him to adjust". She saw Lucius stop his nervous pacing across their bedroom floor and walk up to stand behind her, holding her gaze in the mirror. "You will always be his father and he loves you. No matter what, he'll forgive you in time. Me, on the other hand, is an entirely different matter", Hermione finished putting up her bun, only to have it fall out again in a matter of seconds.
She groaned in frustration and heard Lucius chuckle softly before his hands took over and skillfully wound her hair into an elegant bun, propping it up with a few pins. "You always know exactly what to say", Lucius murmured to her, his eyes sparkling with laughter as she stared incredulously at her suddenly obedient hair.
"Wha…how…where did you learn to do that?" she questioned him, turning around to face him as his arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer.
"Just one of my many skills, my dear", he smirked at her before bending down and placing a soft kiss on her partly open mouth. "And don't worry", he added as he pulled away and prepared to lead her downstairs, to the front parlour where they would wait for Draco, "No one can resist your charms for long. I believe I am a fine example of that". Hermione smiled back at him and took his offered arm, preparing to play her part for the evening.
30 minutes later :-
Hermione sat beside Lucius at the large dining table, keeping her eyes on her plate. She was listening to Lucius and Draco's conversation, which mostly concerned the Malfoy business. She was having a harder time adjusting to this than Draco!
When he had first arrived, he had smiled at Lucius and hugged him but his grey eyes had been unreadable when he turned to face Hermione. She hadn't expected him to accept her immediately, she wasn't sure if he would accept her at all. They had never got along, even at Hogwarts and she doubted that would change, but she still offered him a smile and played the part of hostess (a task that was relatively easy when there were house elves at your disposal) for Lucius' sake.
However, she couldn't keep her unaffected demeanour when she had to see Draco's eyes, which seemed to be assessing her. Probably trying to figure out why Lucius would leave someone like his mother for…the mudblood. She looked up at the sound of Lucius calling her name. Both pairs of grey eyes, so similar yet different, were staring at her, waiting.
"Um…I'm so sorry. What were we talking about?" she was flustered now. So much for good hostess.
She could practically read Draco's thought process. Narcissa would never have tuned out of a conversation at the dinner table but then again, Hermione wasn't trying to be like her. She looked at Lucius, apology in her eyes but he just chuckled softly and took her hand under the table, squeezing it gently.
She tried not to react as she felt the warmth of his hand. The bond made her body respond to his mere presence, stronger than she had towards anyone else, in her lifetime. She knew Lucius felt it too when he looked at her, his eyes growing darker with desire. She couldn't help the blush that rose to her cheeks as she gazed at him.
"Are we boring you Granger?" Draco's sarcastic voice cut in, causing her to look at him with a frown.
She opened her mouth to retort but Lucius beat her to it. "She's a Malfoy now", his voice was deceptively soft but she didn't miss the underlying tone of command and warning that clouded his words. Draco didn't miss it either, as he lowered his eyes and gave a small, tight-lipped nod.
As much as Hermione enjoyed his discomfort at being chastened by his father, she didn't want to make him even more resentful towards her than he already was. "How's you wife? And your son?"she asked, trying to change the subject.
She was surprised when Draco directed his first real smile at her. He looked remarkably like Lucius when he smiled. "They're fine. Scorpius told me your daughter was beating him in nearly every class. That comes as no surprise though", Draco raised an eyebrow and gave her the 'Malfoy' smirk. Strange how she found it adorable when Lucius had the same expression.
"Nearly every class?" she asked, curiosity winning over courtesy at his comment, "What class is he beating her in?"
"Potions", he answered, not bothering to hide the smugness in his voice.
"That's only because it's taught by someone who cares more about house rivalry than academic knowledge", she retorted, holding Lucius' hand in a tighter grasp as she fumed over the injustice of it. Once the war had ended, Professor Slughorn had agreed to stay on until another teacher could be found and three years later, the only person who applied with the right qualifications happened to be Blaise Zabini, Draco's one-time best friend.
Despite everything the wizarding world had been through, Blaise's upbringing still caused him to look down on muggle-borns but since the Ministry had put out a law shortly after the war, that any public displays of condemning attitude based on blood purity would result in immediate punishment, Zabini had fallen back on the age-old Hogwarts house rivalry to show his displeasure.
Basically, this meant almost every Slytherin in the class passed with flying colours, regardless of their potential and every other house (especially Gryffindor) had to work ten times as hard to even score a 'pass' mark. "Whatever you say Gra…Hermione", Draco responded, quickly adding, "Do you mind if I call you that?"
Hermione smiled back at him and shook her head. "Not at all, Draco. It's better than the names I'm accustomed to hearing from you", she ended on a laugh and he chuckled and gave her a nod of acknowledgement.
She felt Lucius stroke his thumb over her hand, a silent thank you for her efforts and she squeezed back, feeling a smile form on her lips.
It was quite late when Draco left. It had been a while since he had seen his father but the main reason he stayed so long was to observe the connection between Lucius and Hermione. He was astounded that two people, especially ones with completely different upbringings not to mention the age gap, could be so in synch with each other. They seemed to anticipate each other's needs.
Draco constantly felt like he was intruding and watching from the outside when they smiled at each other or communicated simply through a glance or a touch. It was almost as if they were reading each other's minds. The longer he stayed, the more he noticed how different the Manor was without his mother there. She was constantly shouting orders to the elves and now, the house was much quieter but also more homely. He found himself wishing that he could have spent his childhood in this atmosphere, with his parents being as happy and in love as Hermione and Lucius obviously were.
Grudgingly, Draco Malfoy came to accept that as much as he might have detested Hermione Granger at one period of his life, she was the perfect match for his father. Lucius had never looked so happy as he did when she held his hand or teased him about some insignificant thing. And unlike his mother, she wasn't afraid to stand up to Lucius and constantly engaged in a battle of wits against him.
The thing that convinced Draco that they were meant to be was he noticed Lucius was very protective of Hermione. Even when they were sitting beside each other, he unconsciously leaned closer to her or held her close to him, watching her with a tender look in his eyes when she spoke to Draco or explained why her theory about something (how many theories could one person have?) was correct. Draco never recalled his father having looked at his mother in that way, in all the years they were together and he most definitely would have put her in her place if she had dared to argue against him the way Hermione did.
He lost track of the time, watching them interact with each other and it was only when Lucius leaned over and kissed Hermione, a quick kiss but full of passion, that Draco excused himself for the night.
He was happy for his father and Granger…but that didn't mean he didn't have a gag reflex and seeing your father kiss someone, definitely had the potential to trigger it. He shook his father's hand and took Hermione by surprise by kissing her hand like a gentleman.
"Astoria wanted to come today", he said just before he apparated, "We'd love it if you came over for dinner in a couple of weeks time. Consider it a 'welcome to the family' dinner", he smiled at Hermione and she smiled back nodding.
"Thank you Draco", Lucius said, one arm wrapping around Hermione's waist to pull her closer to his side. Draco nodded and apparated away with a wave.
Lucius looked at Hermione. He was always left breathless by how beautiful she looked, every time he saw her. "Have I told you how delectable you look this evening", he whispered to her, turning her around in his arms and pulling her closer.
"Delectable?" Hermione asked, trying not to laugh, "That's a strange choice of word".
"Not really", Lucius murmured kissing her neck, "Let me show you what I mean".
"Lucius!" Hermione's half-hearted chide was covered with a moan as Lucius gently sucked on the skin above the pulse in her neck, nibbling and kissing the spot repeatedly.
She allowed him to ease the black straps of her dress off her shoulders as he led her to the couch, and crouched in front of her to push her dress up and kiss between her thighs, over her already moist underwear. Hermione threaded her hands through his hair and pulled him closer, needing him to touch her, kiss her where she wanted to be kissed but he pulled back with a chuckle as she groaned at the loss of contact. "Patience pet", he whispered to her as he pulled off her dress and underclothes, exposing her radiant body to his eyes.
He sat down on the couch and pulled her on top of him, allowing her to take off his robe and other clothes before she straddled him, sinking down on his tool without any clothing barriers in the way and eliciting a moan from both of them. He let her set her own pace this time, feeling generous. He watched as she moved, deliciously slow, his member filling her completely before she forced herself back up, only to sink down on him again.
Lucius' eyes were closed in ecstasy as she moved faster, getting lost in his own pleasure as the feel of her took over his senses. She felt him grasp her hips, causing her to move faster and then she was lost to her own pleasure, a part of her knowing he had followed her into bliss a few moments later.
She collapsed on him, exhausted and satisfied, tilting her head up to receive his soft kiss before laying her head against his chest again, his arms holding her securely. "Delectable", she heard him murmur as they both drifted off to sleep, too tired and comfortable to move to their bedroom.
