Chapter 13
Leaning against Sirius as he sat at the kitchen table, Harry was rubbing his eyes, trying not to doze off again. It had been a few days since Snape's visit and he hadn't been the same since. Nor did any of them seem to know what was going on. All he knew was that he was so tired anymore that he was either sleeping, fighting not to fall asleep, or so worn out that he was lethargic. Nothing they did helped either.
At first, he, Sirius and Remus thought that, maybe, it had to do with a combination of Snape being there causing whatever it was and the amount of people in the house now. That, though, just didn't seem right. As a couple days passed and he hadn't improved the idea came that, possibly, the psychometry was finally starting to manifest. Right now, that was the working theory. Though he hadn't experienced issues with the others when they manifested, they thought this time it was drawing on him in a way it hadn't before because of the speed he and Sirius had sealed the bond that was forming, thus not giving whatever else came a chance to draw on him like this was. With Lucius around and them being unwilling to complete the bond until they knew what was going on with that lot, the thought process seemed to be that it might be drawing on him badly enough as it formed that it was causing this. Again, they couldn't be sure, but it did seem logical.
Hearing Sirius say his name, Harry blinked and looked at him, waiting.
Reaching out to rub his godson's head, Sirius asked, “Want me to get you some Pepper-Up? It might help.”
Just wanting to get through one meal without dozing off and almost landing head first in his food, Harry nodded. As they had tried this already, he knew it wouldn't last long, but it would be long enough for him to eat at least. Then he would go upstairs and take yet another nap.
Giving Harry a pat on the back, Sirius nodded, “Let me go get some.” Standing, he went to go retrieve a vial from the stash Remus had brewed up. Whatever was happening this time around was really pulling at Harry. Though concerned about that, at least they didn't have to worry about some of the other problems that had been going on.
Lifting his head and looking across the table when Narcissa said his name, Harry waited to see what she wanted.
Smiling at the young man, she asked gently, “What would you like to drink with your meal, Harry?” As she knew just what was going on with this from Lucius, she, too, was slightly concerned as to what was she was seeing. Along with that, she was very curious as to what might be bringing it on. Psychometry manifesting seemed to be the running theory with it, but no one was sure. It would be interesting to see what the cause was, though she felt for Harry and how bad he was feeling as he went through it.
“Milk, please,” Harry told her rubbing his eyes. Feeling Lucius' hand on his leg, he sighed softly. Over the last few days since Snape's visit, Lucius had taken to staying close to him and Sirius. That, of course, helped with the creepy-crawly feeling and seemed to aid in some of what else was going on. Honestly, it was fine with him and Sirius. The more comfortable they were, the better. The bond wasn't going to be completed until they got answers, though. That was set in stone. As those didn't seem to be forthcoming, it hadn't happened yet.
Giving Harry's leg a squeeze, Lucius asked, telepathically, “Are you fine, Harry? Or just tired still?”
“Just tired,” Harry groused sourly. Shaking his head, rubbing his gritty feeling eyes again, he sighed once more and hung his head forward, eyes sliding shut. He, really, wasn't sure what to think about this. He didn't like being so tired, that's for sure, but he was more apprehensive about what might be behind it. That part he really hated. He would rather have some kind of hint so that he could prepare for whatever it was rather than just end up being blindsided out of the blue.
“You can finish quickly then go get some more rest,” Lucius told him softly. Like the others, he was concerned about what may be behind this but saw no point in dwelling on it. They would deal with whatever it was when the time came then move on. It was most curious, though, that's for certain!
Sitting there with his head down, making certain to touch Lucius so that everything he was picking up was dimmed, Harry sighed. It was then that something very strange began. At first, he thought he had dozed off once more and was having one of the mini-dreams you sometimes had when that happened. He quickly discounted that though because he could still hear everyone around the table talking, the clatter of dishes as the elves prepared to serve the meal, the smells from the food and all the other normal things that you were bombarded with when you were awake, stuff that didn't register or was relegated to the background when you had dozed off.
Brow furrowed, he watched an obviously sexual scene play out, one where he, Sirius and Lucius were naked in bed. He was straddling Lucius with Sirius behind the two of them. The sounds of moans, panting and other noises were quite prevalent. However, he was confused. Was what he was seeing even possible to do? That he wasn't sure of. Honestly, as Sirius was his first for almost everything and he had only been interested in girls before that, acts like what he was seeing were a mystery to him so he wasn't all that certain of the mechanics behind it, or if it was possible. Then, though he didn't see the bits like you would with a porn movie or mag, as the act kept going there was almost like a voice-over as it seemed to start to fade, something that told him to relax and that it needed to happen. The only strange thing was that, to him, as he knew what it sounded like, it resembled the speech he heard from snakes. He could easily understand what was said, but it had a hissy touch to it. Eyes still shut as the scene faded completely out, Harry shook his head, confused.
Having caught the whole daydream, Lucius chuckled, trying not to smirk. “Interesting daydream, Harry,” he told the young man smoothly.
“It wasn't,” Harry told him, confused. “I was awake and could tell you everything I was hearing around me.”
“Are you sure, Harry?” Sirius asked, having caught it as well. He assumed, initially, that it was nothing more than the bond pulling at Harry, wanting completion, trying to get it by chucking up erotic imagery. If it wasn't, though, he was concerned as to what might be behind it.
“I'm sure,” Harry told Sirius firmly. Directing the next part of what he said at Lucius, he imparted telepathically, “Look, no making fun of me over this, alright?”
“You have my word,” Lucius told him, very curious now over what this might be.
“Why would I daydream about something I'm not even sure is physically possible and never thought about,” Harry grumbled, reaching up to rub his still shut eyes.
Momentarily taken aback, Lucius asked, “What do you mean?” That act—oh, it was quite possible, he knew that. And easy to go about doing it. He assumed the young man knew that.
Giving a mental sigh, Harry grumbled, “Like I said, no making fun or teasing here—Sirius was my first for almost everything. Before him, I had snogged someone, once. That's all. And all I had an attraction to was girls. That—with them I know what I'm doing, at least basically. This is all still—well, you know. I hadn't even thought about guys before, alright? I'm not even sure how you would go about doing something like what was just shown. Then there was the voice at the end. Did you both understand what it said?” Hearing the two confirm they did, Harry sighed mentally again then said, “It sounded like the way snakes talk, what with the hissy speech and all. I don't get this.”
Rubbing a hand over his chin, thinking, Lucius asked, “Are you sure it sounded like the speech pattern of a snake?”
“Dead certain,” Harry told him firmly. “The other part—I'm lost on that. I don't get it. Is it even possible?”
“It is, Harry,” Sirius told him gently as he made his way towards the kitchen after getting a vial of the potion. “I'll explain how later.”
“It doesn't make any form of sense that I would daydream about something I don't know how to do!” Harry told them both.
“No, it doesn't,” Lucius said gently, giving Harry's leg a reassuring squeeze.
“Maybe it's just the bond manifesting in some way trying to push it forward, to get the completion it wants,” Sirius suggested. It didn't sound right to him, but it was possible he supposed.
“That very well could be,” Lucius confirmed. For him, it made sense since he knew about the prophecy and the Serpentine Seer part of it. If it did sound like the hissing pattern of a snake, that might be part of this. He didn't know, however. It was something he would pass on to Severus through Narcissa later.
“I don't need any more strangeness,” Harry grumped, opening his eyes when he heard the goblet being sat in front of his plate. All this was bad enough as it was, he didn't need more chucked on top of it to help! Looking at the ancient goblet in front of his plate, one of the old goblin made ones that Narcissa loved because of their history, his brow furrowed. There was something about that—thing he didn't like. He didn't know what it was, of course, but he didn't like it. However, he was thirsty. Reaching out, he grabbed a hold of it then it felt like someone had touched the base of his spine with a cattle prod that was turned up as high as it could go.
Letting out a cry of pain, eyes screwing tightly shut, he desperately tried to let go of the goblet, but couldn't. Instead, what he was on the receiving end of was a vision of something that he was certain happened in the past. It was set in the kitchen they were currently in, but it looked far newer, more clean and crisp, than it did now. Watching, wanting to turn away, but not being able to, he saw an older woman all dressed in black dump a vial of something into a goblet before adding a drink to it, swirling it around to make sure it was all mixed together. Though he didn't know how he knew it, he was certain what she had put in the goblet was deadly poison. Smiling evilly, she then sat it down on the table in front of a plate. The scene then jumped forward to an older man sitting at the table with the same woman. Grabbing the goblet, he downed the contents then held it out for a refill. The smiling woman obliged, seeming to wait. Within seconds, the man was doubled over, screaming in pain, holding his gut. As he did that, Harry could feel what he was sure were the same pains the man was having, something that felt like his guts were starting to liquify after having acid dumped on them. Still clutching the goblet in one hand, his other shaking arm curled over his stomach as he doubled over slightly, panting heavily, whimpering in pain, as tears were starting to stream down his face as he got to feel every second of the man in the vision's death throes.
When Harry let out the pained cry, Lucius could start to feel what the young man was experiencing and desperately reached out to pry the goblet from his hand. Rubbing his forehead, gritting his teeth, he couldn’t manage, it was as though Harry's hand was glued to the goblet. Then he began to get some of the visions Harry was having. It was just snippets here and there, not the whole thing, but enough for him to understand what was going on. Unlike Harry, he knew what he was seeing. The woman was Hera Black, one of the more colorful characters in the Black family tree. She had seven husbands before she finally died and it had been rumored that she was a black widow, having poisoned all of them for their money. However, it was never proven and no charges were ever leveled. It was just the family that still spoke about it, pondering if she had or not since no one had ever been able to confirm it. Right now, though, all he was concerned about was getting that damned goblet out of Harry's hand before it got any worse! Already Harry was in agony and he didn't want it to become any worse than what it currently was. Fumbling, he tried, but couldn't seem to get Harry's hand off the thing!
Almost at the door to the kitchen when the vision hit, Sirius dropped to his knees with a cry of pain when he got the bleeding out from Harry. Oh, this was bad! Still clutching onto the vial of Pepper-Up, he tried to push on but his whole body, especially his head and gut, were screaming in agony. Shaking his head, willing himself to keep moving, he wasn’t sure what to do!
Remus had been talking quietly to Narcissa when he heard the cry from Harry. Looking in that direction, his eyes widened at what he saw. Immediately, he was certain the psychometry had manifested for the first time with the way Harry was clutched onto the goblet. Standing, not sure what to do, knowing he couldn't touch the young man, he looked around. Lucius was trying to pry the cup out of his hand, but didn't seem to be able to manage, while looking like he was in a fair amount of pain himself. Sirius hadn't come back in yet. Though he didn't know how much help his old friend would be with this, especially since Lucius, who the whole mess wasn't affecting nearly as much as it was the other two, looked like he was suffering plenty, he thought it best to go get him to see what he could do. When blood started to run out of Harry's nose, then a small trickle began with Lucius as well, he told a horrified looking Narcissa, “I'll be right back.” Dashing out of the door, he went to find Sirius.
Sitting there, completely stunned and horrified by what she was seeing, Narcissa wasn't sure what to do. Lucius was trying to aid Harry, but he was struggling himself. Then the bleeding started. Standing, she hurried over to the other side of the table to see what she could do. Conjuring a towel, without thinking, she put it to Harry's nose and squeezed, hoping to stop the bleeding. Though there was a high pitched keening noise from the poor young man, it wasn't until she put her hand on the back of his head to hold him still that he let out a scream of pure agony. It was then it hit her what she had just done. Eyes going wide, she whispered, “Oh Merlin!” then started to shake violently.
Lucius had seen what Narcissa was about to do and tried to tell her to stop. However, he couldn't get it out of his mouth before she touched the young man. When she did, he got his first real dose of how bad this was for Harry. When Narcissa touched him, it had been like being smacked right in the forehead with a boulder, then the immense pain started. There were flashes of images he picked up, but nothing that made sense to him. The only ones he seemed to be able to decipher what they were happened to be a continuation of the part with the goblet. The others—he had no idea what they were or where they were from as they were so vague and disconnected. All he knew was that he was in agony. Hissing through his teeth, he wasn't sure whether to keep trying to pry the goblet out of Harry's hand or tell Narcissa to let him go. Hell, he wasn't even certain he could do either at this point! He was in so much pain that he couldn’t focus on anything!
Remus had just managed to help Sirius to his feet and had his hand on the kitchen door to push it open when his old friend let out an almost agonized scream and dropped to his knees once more. Blood had been trickling from his nose, but no more than it had from Lucius. Now, though, it was starting to flow quickly. Shaking his head, not sure what to do, he cast a lightening charm on Sirius then helped him to his feet once more, pushing the door open and all but dragging him inside. Looking at Narcissa, who had her hands on Harry, he said, “Oh, Merlin! Let loose of him!”
Having been stunned, not sure what to do, Narcissa immediately let loose of Harry, stepping back, shaking, wringing her hands. “I'm so sorry, Harry! I forgot! I didn't mean to make it worse!” She whispered, shaking her head.
Not sure what to do, Remus looked at her while helping Sirius over to the bench. He shook his head then told the upset woman, “Send one of the elves up to my room to get the bag the potions are kept in. The pain draughts Severus sent over are in that.” Helping Sirius to sit down, conjuring a towel and putting it to his friend's nose when he saw Lucius, who was shaking himself, face drawn in pain, hold the towel Narcissa had conjured to Harry's, he shook his head. This was bad, really bad.
Nodding, eyes wide, Narcissa did that then stepped over and conjured another towel, putting it to Lucius' nose, hoping to stop the bleeding. Looking at Remus as he sat Sirius down by Harry, making sure her cousin touched the young man, she stammered, “We need to get the goblet out of his hand! That should stop it.”
Though that was a damned good idea, Remus didn't know how to do it without touching Harry. Nor was he sure with what was going on that using magic to even attempt it was wise. He didn't know if that could make matters worse than it already was!
Fumbling, in agony, Sirius reached out and desperately tried to help Lucius pry the goblet out of Harry's hand. The vision seemed to be almost at an end, but the chunk that was playing out was excruciating to not only watch, but feel as well. At least Cissy had let loose of Harry, something that helped drop the pain level and stopped the visions he had been getting from his godson that were from her. Trying to focus, he was desperate to get that accursed cup out of his godson's hand.
Making a pained keening noise, the only thing he could articulate at this point, Harry was shaking violently as he watched the man die. Oh, this sucked! It hurt worse than anything up to this point and he could easily live without having to experience it again! Desperately trying to will his hand to let loose of the cup, he couldn't quite manage, though he wanted to. Feeling both Lucius and Sirius attempting to pry the accursed thing out of his hand, he panted heavily, body hurting worse than anything he had experienced before in his life!
Lucius, growling softly, was trying to pry Harry's fingers off that damned thing! Finally, he managed and tossed the nasty piece of work off the table. Almost immediately, the young man slumped, head dropping onto the table, tears of pain still coursing down his face as he shook violently. Sighing in relief as the visions stopped, though the pain level didn't seem to be dropping any, he rubbed his eyes and slumped slightly himself. “Give him something for pain,” he managed to pant out, looking in Lupin's direction while swiping at his own face with a trembling hand.
Nodding vigorously, Remus fumbled in the bag then pulled out two of the strongest of the draughts Severus had given him then passed them to Sirius. He pulled out another milder one for Lucius, as the man was definitely in better shape than the other two were.
Taking the vials with a trembling hand, Sirius managed to fumble with them enough to get the stoppers out. As gently as he could, he lifted Harry's head up and managed to get him to take it before swallowing his own. Dropping the now empty vials on the table, he slumped, rubbing his head, shaking. Oh, that was bad!
Taking his own dose of painkiller, Lucius had Narcissa remove the towel to ensure the bleeding had stopped. As it had, he swallowed thickly then shook his head, not sure what to do. Almost instantly, he got relief from the pain, but could still feel that Harry was in agony. Along with that, he was now getting some from Sirius as well, something that told him the man was in almost as bad of shape as Harry was. Trying to think, though not as with it as normal from what he had just gone through, he looked at the pale Lupin then said, “Help Black up to the bedroom and I'll do the same with Harry.” Seeing the man nod, he then called one of his elves, instructing them to do to Black's room what they used to do for his mother when she had a migraine; douse all the lights but a dim candle and drop the temperature of it. It probably wouldn't be a huge help, but might assist slightly in making them comfortable.
Nodding, Remus cast another charm on Sirius to help lighten him then aided his old friend in standing. Having Sirius lean on him, he slowly led him out of the kitchen.
Though still more than slightly off kilter himself and shaking, Lucius managed to get to his feet. Slowly, being careful not to cause the young man more pain than he was already in, he assisted Harry to his feet. Having Harry lean against him, wrapping one arm around him, holding on tightly, he said, gently, as they walked towards the door, “Come on, Harry. We'll get you upstairs to lie down. That'll help.”
Nodding, feeling a not so pleasant wave of pain course through his head as he did, Harry leaned against Lucius, shaking badly, legs feeling like they were made of rubber, and allowed himself to be led out of the room.
Standing there, eyes wide, having taken in everything that had just happened, Draco swallowed thickly, trembling himself. “Mother? What was that?” He asked, voice quivering slightly as he did.
Wringing her hands, Narcissa said, feeling sick with herself over having made the situation worse, “My guess is that the psychometry that they thought was coming just hit. Oh, this isn't good!” Trembling herself, Narcissa tried to think. She would do something later, though she didn't know what, to make up to Harry for the pain she had caused, however, right now she needed to focus on something else. Looking at the table, seeing it set with the ancient serving ware that had been in her family for centuries, her face took on a determined look. Calling one of her elves, she ordered, “Remove all the old serving ware and store it in the basement. Then go to the manor and get a set of new that we have stored. All if it from the silverware to glasses, everything. I want it all replaced.” Hopefully, with using all new, this wouldn't be a problem again.
