Not knowing where else to go after Dumbledore’s funeral, and definitely not wanting to go back to the emptiness of Grimmauld Place, she goes to see Remus and Tonks. She gathers up the twins, holding them tightly and swearing vengeance under her breath at Snape. She cannot believe that she ever trusted him, and she’s even tempted to break her promise to him not to reveal his vulnerability; except that she can’t see where it would really hurt him now if she did.
But in the quiet hours after everyone is asleep, she cries bitterly. She would have called him a friend by this point; she cannot believe that she was so wrong about him. She’d have sworn that he actually cared about her, Dumbledore had even said that he had. She'd have sworn he cared about Dumbledore as well. She had fully believed up to this point that he wasn’t as unfeeling as he’d always appeared to be, and she had felt a great deal of sympathy for him. She tries to fit the pieces together but they remain an impossible puzzle; his lack of emotion when casting the Killing Curse, and the pain on his face after he’d sent the others on. And hinting that there was a reason that she’d learn of later.
But try as she might, she cannot think of any possible reason that he ‘had’ to kill Dumbledore. Even being under an Imperius curse wouldn't fit; he wouldn’t have been able to speak of it at all in that case.
She finally decides that she was just wrong about him. He’s a cold-blooded traitor and she’s probably lucky to be alive, he was probably just worming his way into her life so that he could betray her at the right time as well.
The rest of the Order feels similarly betrayed by him. Given his actions, Remus and Tonks sit down with Evie the next morning, saying they have a very serious proposition to make to her. They of course don’t know how close she’d grown to Snape, but they do know that Snape was a member of the Order, and as such still has access to Grimmauld Place.
In light of that, they feel that the twins especially should be kept safe; there would be no better way to get to her, than through them. Evie shudders and agrees, imagining Voldemort gloating over them. Remus adds that he’s not sure if Snape did tell Voldemort or the other Death Eaters about the twins, that it is possible that he didn’t and that still only the Order and close friends know about them; but they can’t take the risk.
Remus stops for a minute and shares a long look with Tonks, and then finally looks back at Evie. Taking a deep breath, he says, "This is the part that you're not going to like; we (all the remaining members of the Order) feel it would be best if Tonks’ parents took the twins, potentially even out of the country, and for security even you won't know where they are until this is over."
She immediately protests, and they wait her out silently while she gives them all kinds of reasons why it doesn’t need to go that far.
Once she’s wound down a bit, Tonks replies, “But what if lesser measures than that don’t turn out to be enough? The only way we’ll know it wasn’t enough is if the worst happens; are you prepared to live with knowing that we could have done more? You’ve already lost Sirius to Bellatrix, you can only imagine what she’d be like if she got her hands on your (and his) children. That’s actually the only reason we think Snape might not have told them – yet – because we’re fairly sure she’d stop at nothing to get to them if she knew about them.”
It is a terrifying and sobering thought, and reluctantly she has to agree. However much she doesn’t want to lose contact with her children, the thought of Bellatrix even so much as being in the same room with them is worse. She spends a few days with the twins, memorizing their features, their personalities that are just beginning to really shine through.
Finally she goes with them to Ted and Andromeda Tonks’ place, and kisses them goodbye with tears in her eyes. She does at least know that Tonks’ parents will care for them and love them as if they were their own; and in fact, they are at least somewhat related as Andromeda was Sirius’s cousin, another that Sirius’s mother had burned out of the family tapestry.
Remus accompanies her back to Grimmauld Place, and they check it room by room before deciding no-one's been there. He gives her a hug before he goes, and says, “I wish we could hide you away too, Evie. I’m very concerned about you staying here by yourself, for a lot of reasons. But, given the things that are still to come, you’re probably no less safe here than anywhere else. We’ll be leaking a rumor that you are staying at the Burrow, and hopefully that will keep anyone from looking here.”
She nods and he goes on, “However, if someone should come here; I want you to keep your Invisibility Cloak nearby at all times. If anyone comes, hide under it until they’re gone and don’t try to confront them unless you absolutely have to. If they catch you doing something like making dinner, that shows the house is occupied, just summon Kreacher back; he can be the explanation for it and as long as they don’t find you, they’ll likely accept it. Mad-Eye is convinced that this is the best we can do, and while I don’t like it, I think it probably does have the best chance of succeeding. Are you all right?”
“Yes, I think so. Thank you, Remus – for all you’ve done, and Tonks as well.” Remus smiles at her kindly and then returns home.
