The alarm bell sounded again. Feeding Crookshanks I made my way to the kitchen where I found the professor reading once more. No food was out for us but for once I found myself gazing at a beautiful red apple in a fruit bowl on the counter. I guess after regular meals I'm getting my appetite back again. I never really thought it would happen.
“If you wish for something just take it, your presence is loud even without speaking.” He drawled once more. Remembering that I told myself to start looking for signals in his mood, this would be one of them. I looked around for the kettle, filled it and placed it on the stove to boil. Plucking an apple from the bowl I leant against the counter rubbing it against my lips before taking a bite. As I did I noticed Snape was thoroughly radiating unease and I knew that classes today would be a nightmare. Thank God it was Friday.
I retrieved two mugs and poured some lavender tea in both. After which placing one in front of the wizard, he simply glanced at it.
“May I take my tea to my room?” I asked gently, as much as I was reluctant to speak I was more terrified if I wasn't allowed to and did it anyway.
“By all means do as you wish and leave me be.” With that he lifted his book more and blocked out my presence.
In my room I decided to start my assignment, today there was a free period for the first lesson so we both had more time to kill before having to get ready. After finishing my tea I walked back to the kitchen, noting how I heard the shower was on in the bathroom. His tea mug was empty and by the sink so while I waited for him to finish I washed up. The door down the hall opened and I heard him approach. When I turned to face him he was soaking wet with a towel draped low on his hips. I looked away suddenly back at my task, almost making myself dizzy. The wizards hand reached over my shoulder and I stiffened. It stayed hovered in mid air for several moments before reaching further forward and grabbing an apple from the bowl. His body heat was felt through my clothes. As quick as he came he left again to his room.I showered and changed ready for work, today I was determined to do my corset by myself. Snape clearly wasn't in any mood to do it for me and I wasn't going to bug him unless I seriously had to while he was in this mood. I got it as tight as I could and even that wasn't half as tight as it really should be but I decided to leave it. Donned my tie and shoes, beating the professor to his classroom ready for second period. He only joined me moments before the bell rang and I sat at my desk.
“I wish for you to teach them the potion on page forty two today, Miss Granger. I'll be here but have work to do.” He ordered and started scribbling on a parchment from a large stack. I nodded as the bell chimed and students started flooding into the class. I quickly got my own book to the page I was meant to teach and noticed it was a similar variation of the potion I had to brew last night, I was happy with that. Noting that it was a mild hangover potion and inwardly rolling my eyes at Snape's not so subtle nerve.
“Books to page forty two.” I said to the class while getting up, my head looking into my own book.
The class started to heat incredibly quickly so I shrugged off my cloak, grateful I already had enough brains to put my hair up earlier. Not long after hanging up my cloak I bent over one of the students work stations to help with an incredibly horrific fail of a potion when I felt my corset tighten marginally. I instinctively looked behind me and no one was there, the professor was still scribbling at his desk so I dismissed it. Turning back to the terrified child.
“It's fine Benny, you just-- EEEH!” I squeaked as my corset lurched tighter.
“Are you okay Miss Granger?” The student Benny asked, stunned. I looked around again, no one was close enough too me and everyone seemed to be absorbed in their work.
“Yeah I'm okay, just got a pain-- Urgh!” The corset slowly started to close around me, the blissful constriction making me pant out with a dazed expression. I turned quickly as to not show them. “Yeah just a back pain.” I huffed. Staring at Snape writing I noticed his fingers under the table moving frontward, no one else would have noticed unless they were staring and people didn't tend to stare at the scary master. The wizard looked at me through his hair subtly, his fingers mashing into a fist under the table, as they did my garment tightened again. I contorted my face and leant against the work station staring at him.
“Miss Granger?” Benny asked again. I found it hard to catch my breath. The corset had stopped at the same tension it would usually be if Snape did it for me. I coughed as I turned.
“Yes Benny so what you did was accidentally include a frogs leg instead on a toads, pay closer attention. Unfortunately you'll have to stay at lunch to re do your work.” With that I left before the boy might cry. My chest had been searing all day but since that little, albeit unnecessary show I was feeling better.
At lunch both I and the professor stayed in the classroom, he to work and me to watch over poor Benny. As I did I wrote out my report for keeping him during lunch and gave it to Snape who quickly signed it and tucked it into his drawer. A bang sounded from the students cauldron and I sighed, casually walking in his direction.
“I have no idea how you keep messing this up Benny, it's so basic.” I muttered, rather annoyed and not knowing why. Maybe the sour wizards mood was rubbing off on me.
“I-I'm sorry!” He stammered. I looked over his work.
“Again you messed up two ingredients...” I rubbed my forehead.
“You'll spend your weekend here writing out the potions ingredients one hundred times until you learn to read.” Snape spat as he stood from his desk.
“I don't think that would be nec--”
“Quiet Miss Granger, you're no better.” He cut me off. I wanted to scream at him but knew better, at least in the company of a student. Benny looked as pale as paper and somewhat reminded me of Draco.
“Leave.” He shooed the scared boy from the room, who gladly ran out without any hesitation. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my cloak. “Where are you going?” He asked.
“To lunch, where everyone is.” I shot back.
“Stay and clean this station.” The wizard barked.
“No, I'll see you in twenty minutes.” I sighed and knotted the ties on my cloak to leave.
“No?” His voice was disbelieving.
“I'm not cleaning up because you were too stupid to get the poor boy to stay and do it himself. Don't punish me for your own mistake.” I almost growled and left the room, feeling so much braver than I ever did. I think I'd eliminated most of my fears of the man. I'd probably live to regret it later though.
–Lunch went well, I spent my time chatting to the boys again and giggling. Poor Benny from Hufflepuff looked green and hadn't eaten. After the meal I managed to catch the student before he left the hall for his next lesson.“I'm sorry about the Professor. I can't talk to him about it but take this.” I handed him a list of all the potions ingredients. “If you study that before sleeping every night you'll easily be able to beat him.” I smiled, his colour came back a little bit. Malfoy came up behind me and the boys face dropped again.
“Thank you Miss Granger.” He nodded and ran off.
“Look at you, super teacher.” Draco mused and I laughed.
“I'd rather help my students than make them too scared to learn anything.” I stated. “Studying doesn't always mean you can do it, making students so scared they study a lot doesn't mean that everyone is going to know everything.” I finished. Snapes philosophy was a bad one at best. If someone didn't understand how would they learn? Even if they were scared.
“That is very wise.” Professor Mark came up behind the both of us. The new Defence Against the Dark Arts master looked handsome with his sharp suit shirt and sleeveless black jumper. Him and Draco sort of looked alike to some degree. “Specially to have that insight at your age. It's very impressive.” He smiled. I smiled back.
“Hello Professor.” I bowed my head slightly as a greeting as my arms were full of books.
“Call me Mister Mark. Professor makes me feel old.” He chuckled. I'd heard Draco call him that but thought perhaps it would be inappropriate for me, I guessed not. “I wanted to speak with you Miss Granger. About helping out in my class this after noon. I need someone to help Mister Malfoy demonstrate duelling as I'm unable to.” He nodded. I had noticed that Professor Mark had a rather prominent limp and I heard one of his arms no longer moved easily. He was very smart and capable though.
“I'd love to but Professor Snape will have my head if these reports aren't on his desk in three minutes.” I shuffled, clearly wanting to leave but not wanting to be rude. Mark pulled parchment out of his pocket and scribbled something on it, folded it and placed it atop the bundle of stuff I was carrying before flicking his wand at them and beckoning them away.
“There, I told him you'll be helping me and Mister Malfoy with my classes this afternoon, I'll vouch for you if he gives you any trouble.” He smiled reassuringly, I didn't feel so at ease.
“This is going to be amazing!” Malfoy cheered and the professor laughed. They had an obviously good relationship, I found myself envying them. After my little outburst towards Severus I knew I was in for it later.
I entered the old familiar classroom. I started scratching at my hands again when I remembered the year Lupin taught us all, he was so amazing and he'd never be here again. I noticed Malfoy staring at me knowingly, I knew it was difficult for him to understand fully but he too had lost people he cared about.“Okay so basically this afternoon I would like you two to recite duelling tactics for my class.” Flicking his wand he transformed all the classroom tables into a long stage. “Head into my office and wait there while I set things up.” He ushered, almost manually moving us in the direction. Once there Draco spoke.
“You're not comfortable skipping class are you?” Watching him I sighed.
“Not really, not today.” After a moment Malfoy nodded.
“Everyone thinks you're mental for accepting a position with the greasy dungeon bat.” He laughed a little and so did I. “Even the teachers do. Mister Mark wonders how someone like you would even want to end up with him, even if you only accepted it to return to Hogwarts.” I looked around the room thinking that honestly, I hadn't thought too much about it. If they knew where I came from they'd understand that hanging around Severus Snape was an almighty step up from that downward spiral I was so helplessly stuck in. I couldn't tell them though.
“I dunno Draco, some days he's not so bad...” I whispered, somewhat needing to defend the dark master. When I glanced at Malfoy he didn't seem too surprised at my statement.
“I don't get how anyone in their right might would knowingly accept a place under him.” He poked at his fingers. “But you don't seem bothered by him when I've seen you together. It's not like you're chums but you're not awkward in each others company. It's so strange to see the surly Professor actually being relaxed around you of all people, Granger.” Elbowing my arm I laughed a little. Had Snape really grown to accept me? It hardly felt that way. Just felt like he was tolerating me for the sake of leaving his position to someone capable in the future.
“Never really noticed.” I said honestly. “I think perhaps you only saw him on his more light-hearted days. Most of the time he's a force to be reckoned with.” I laughed a little awkwardly.
“Like today maybe?” Malfoy cocked an eyebrow at me. I nodded simply.
“Would seem that way.” I concluded.
During conversation we hadn't noticed the sound of pupils until Professor Mark called us out. The student crowd clapped enthusiastically and we both bowed.“Today Miss Granger and Mister Malfoy will be joining us to help us understand defensive tactics.” He started. Continuing to let the students know the score and what sort of spells we would use, both offensive and defensive.
Malfoy and I went a bit crazy and Mark had to yell at us to calm down several times which erupted the class into fits of giggles, including me and Draco.
After classes ended I sat and had tea with them both and we spoke gently about topics that weren't so serious. Professor Mark asked about Lupin a few times and I felt my chest throb uncomfortably, he seemed to notice and changed the subject. Just as we were packing away some items and cleaning up, someone shoved into the room. Snape. Yep. I didn't even bother looking up from my current job, I could already feel him. Malfoy next to me went rigid and Professor Mark got up.
“Ah, Severus. Will you accompany us to dinner? Things took longer than I thought so I couldn't return her as promptly as I'd have liked.” He smiled at me when I looked up. Amusing myself for an instant wondering if that might be the last time I ever saw Mark smile, just before convincing myself that I was just being dramatic.
“Mister Mark, need I remind you that if you are to transfer a teacher from a classroom you must give ample notice?” Snape was fuming, perhaps my last dramatic thought might become true.
“Come now Professor, Miss Granger is hardly a qualified teacher just yet, you must oversee all classes so I gave all the notice that was needed.” The blonde professor smiled calmly. I looked over at Malfoy with an I told you so expression. The boy gulped at me, unease all over his face. I stepped over to him.
“Come on Draco, lets go to dinner.” I took his hand and guided him towards the door where the Potions Master was stood. He stared at our joined hands.
“Excuse me sir.” I asked, not really looking at him. Malfoy's hand was clammy in mine, I knew he wanted to flee but I didn't feel the need. Snape didn't move a muscle so I made my choice to push past him but he grabbed me.
“Severus, please just join us to dinner...” Professor Mark reasoned before the dark wizard looked at him then at Draco, after which dragging me out of the class and back towards the dungeons. The dark arts professor was right behind us. “I'm afraid I bullied Miss. Granger into joining me today, Severus. Don't be angry at her.” I could hear the panting in his voice as he tried to keep up, his limp causing a lurch in his tone every so often. When I turned to look I noticed Malfoy trying to keep up but also keeping out of the line of fire. Snape stopped suddenly, causing me to yelp. He took a deep breath in when I looked at him then turned to face the somewhat distressed professor.
“She has duties to uphold before her rounds later and due to her time wasted with you she can no longer afford to attend dinner.” He drawled, keeping my upper arm firmly in his grasp. My chest started to burn again, causing me to wince. “You have no one but yourself to blame, Mister Mark. Thanks to you, Granger has to suffer the consequences.” He hissed. I looked at Professor Mark and he looked at me with sad eyes, I just looked away. Wanting only to remember that moments ago we were laughing happily. When no one had anything else to say, the dark wizard abruptly turned and pulled me away. I glanced back at Draco and Oliver to find them both watching, the professor lipped the words I'm sorry before we turned a corner and out of view.
